For Google Calendar, choose Only if the sender is known. Google then adds invitations automatically only when the sender is in your contacts, belongs to your organization, or has interacted with you before. An invitation from an unknown sender still arrives by email, but it stays off your calendar until you accept it. If you want every invitation held back until you make an email response, choose When I respond to the invitation in email instead.
First identify which account owns the calendar
The app on your phone is not always the service that controls your calendar. An iPhone can display a Google calendar, Outlook can display an iCloud calendar, and a work profile may apply an administrator’s policy. Open the event or calendar list and identify the account that received the invitation. Change the setting in that provider’s account, not merely in the viewing app.
- Google Calendar: has a sender-based choice specifically designed to keep unknown invitations off the calendar.
- Outlook: documents controls for events extracted from email and for blocking mail senders, but not a universal consumer switch that rejects every unsolicited meeting request.
- iCloud Calendar: lets you choose how invitations are delivered and provides Report Junk for an invitation that has already arrived.
The controls have different jobs. A sender filter, an email-delivery choice, a Junk Email rule, and a spam-report action are not interchangeable. Use the section for the account that actually receives the invitation.
Google Calendar: keep unknown invitations off the calendar
Google’s closest match to “block calendar invites from people I don’t know” is Only if the sender is known. Google describes a known sender as someone in your contacts, someone in your organization, or someone you have interacted with previously. Invitations from those people can be added automatically; invitations from others are not placed on the calendar until you accept them.

Change the setting on a computer
- Open Google Calendar.
- Select Settings, then select Settings again.
- Under General, select Event settings.
- Find Add invitations to my calendar.
- Select Only if the sender is known.
The change affects new invitations. It does not scan your existing calendars and remove events that were already added.
Choose the stricter response-required option when necessary
When I respond to the invitation in email is more restrictive. Google does not add an invitation until you respond to the invitation email. This is useful when even a meeting from a contact should remain off the calendar until you deliberately answer it.
Under From everyone, all invitations sent directly to your email address are added automatically. That option does not meet the goal of keeping unknown invitations off your calendar.

Change the setting on an iPhone or iPad
- Open the Google Calendar app.
- Open Menu, then Settings.
- Select General, then Adding invitations.
- Under Add invitations to my calendar, choose Only if the sender is known or When I respond to the invitation in email.
For a work or school account, the administrator may restrict the choices shown in the app. If the option is missing, the account may be governed by Google Workspace policy rather than a problem with your phone.
What “known” means in practice
Google can treat a sender as known because the address is in your contacts, because the sender is part of your organization, or because you previously interacted with that person. If you want future invitations from a trusted person to be handled automatically under the known-senders choice, add the person’s email address to your contacts or interact with them as appropriate.
Google warns that the known-senders behavior can reveal to an unknown sender that they are not in your contacts. The invitation is not silently discarded: the sender can still generate an invitation email, and you can accept it from that message when it is legitimate.

Google has a separate privacy control under Event settings: Let others see all invitations if they have permission to view or edit my events. Turn this off if people who can view or edit your calendar should not see invitations that are still pending and not visible to you. This limits other people’s visibility; it does not prevent invitations from arriving or replace the sender filter.

Remove invitations that are already on the calendar
Changing the invitation setting is not a cleanup operation. For an event that is already present, open the event and use the available removal, decline, or report-spam action. The exact choices can vary by event status and account type. Do not expect a later change to Only if the sender is known to remove older events automatically.
If Google spam continues on Android
If unsolicited events continue to appear on an Android device after you selected Only if the sender is known, Google recommends reviewing which apps have access to your calendar. An app with calendar-write permission can create events independently of Google’s invitation rule. Check the account and app permissions, revoke access that is not needed, and then remove any events that were already created.
Outlook: understand what its settings can and cannot block
Microsoft’s documented Outlook controls do not establish a universal consumer setting that rejects every meeting invitation from an unknown person. Outlook’s behavior also depends on whether you use Outlook on the web, Outlook.com, the new Outlook for Windows, a work account, or another provider’s mailbox connected to Outlook.
“Events from email” is not a meeting-invitation blocker
In Outlook on the web or Outlook.com, open Settings, go to Calendar, and open Events from email. This feature creates calendar entries or summaries from supported email content, such as some travel bookings and delivery messages. Microsoft documents it separately from meeting requests.

Turning off email-derived events can stop those automatic travel or delivery entries, but it should not be presented as a guaranteed fix for unsolicited meeting invitations. A meeting request sent through the calendar invitation system is a different type of message. The feature’s availability can also depend on your Microsoft account, plan, and region.
Blocking an Outlook sender moves mail to Junk Email
Blocking an address or domain in Outlook sends messages from that sender to Junk Email. That is a mail-handling measure. Microsoft’s instructions do not promise that it prevents every unsolicited meeting request from reaching a calendar, so treat it as one layer of filtering rather than a calendar-invite guarantee.
The new Outlook for Windows blocking instructions do not apply to third-party accounts such as Gmail, Yahoo, or iCloud that you merely view through Outlook. Those accounts must use their own provider’s controls. If a meeting still appears after you block a sender, check which account owns the calendar and whether the invitation was accepted by another device or rule.

iCloud Calendar: choose delivery and report invitations as junk
Apple’s documented iCloud controls focus on how invitations reach you and on reporting a received invitation as spam. Apple does not document a Google-style known-senders-only filter for iCloud Calendar.
Choose in-app notifications or email
iCloud Calendar lets you receive invitations as in-app notifications or by email. The choice applies across devices signed in to the same Apple Account when iCloud Calendar is enabled. Changing the delivery method changes where you review the invitation; it does not create a sender allowlist.
Report a spam invitation
- Sign in to iCloud.com and open Calendar.
- Open the invitation that appears to be spam.
- Choose Report Junk.
Apple says reporting the invitation automatically removes the event from calendars on all devices signed in to that Apple Account. Use this for an event that has already arrived; it is not a pre-emptive filter for every future sender.

Provider comparison: which control solves which problem?
| Provider | Primary control | Filters invitations by sender? | Does the invitation email continue? | Existing-event cleanup |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Calendar | Only if the sender is known, or When I respond to the invitation in email | Yes, for automatic calendar addition of new invitations | Yes. An unknown invitation still arrives by email under the known-senders choice | Remove or report the event separately; the setting is not retroactive |
| Outlook | Events from email for supported email-derived items; sender blocking for mail | Not established as a universal meeting-request filter | Blocked senders’ messages go to Junk Email | Handle the event or meeting request separately |
| iCloud Calendar | Invitation delivery choice and Report Junk | No documented known-senders-only filter | Depends on notification or email delivery choice | Report Junk removes the reported event from signed-in devices |
The table’s distinctions matter: filtering email does not necessarily filter calendar objects, and reporting one event does not necessarily block the sender forever.
Troubleshooting: when unknown invitations still appear
- Find the owning account. Check the calendar name, account list, or event details. A Google event displayed in an Apple or Microsoft app must be controlled in Google Calendar.
- For Google, verify the invitation rule. On a computer, return to Settings > Settings > General > Event settings and confirm Only if the sender is known or When I respond to the invitation in email.
- Check whether the event is old. Google’s setting applies only to new invitations. Remove an existing event manually or use its available spam-report action.
- Expect the email. Under Google’s known-senders choice, the unknown invitation email is still delivered. The goal is to keep it off the calendar until you accept it, not to block the message itself.
- Check Google Workspace policy. A work or school administrator can set the default and the least restrictive invitation option users may choose. Ask the administrator if the control is unavailable or locked.
- Review Android app access. If Google spam continues on Android, inspect which apps can write to the calendar. An app may be creating events outside the invitation setting.
- For Outlook, separate event types. Turn off Events from email only when the unwanted entries are extracted from supported email content. Do not assume it rejects meeting requests. Blocking a sender sends mail to Junk Email but does not promise calendar-wide prevention.
- For iCloud, report the event. Open iCloud Calendar on iCloud.com and select Report Junk. Apple says this removes the event from calendars on all devices signed in to the account.
Google Workspace administrator limits
In Google Workspace, administrators can establish the default and the least restrictive invitation-addition option available to users. The documented policy choices cover invitations from everyone, known senders, or invitations the user responded to by email. An organization can therefore prevent an individual from selecting a stricter or different option.
If a work or school account does not show the choice you need, that is likely an organization policy decision rather than a broken installation. Ask the Workspace administrator which invitation policy applies and whether it can be changed for your account.
A practical setup for reducing calendar spam
Personal Google account
- Select Only if the sender is known for a balance between automatic scheduling with familiar people and protection from strangers.
- Select When I respond to the invitation in email if no invitation should appear before you make a decision.
- Keep the invitation email: it is how you review and accept a legitimate unknown sender.
- Add trusted contacts to your Google contacts when you want their future invitations to qualify as known.
Work or school Google account
- Check whether the administrator has limited the available choices.
- Use the organization’s approved reporting or removal process for an event already present.
- Do not assume that a personal-calendar procedure overrides Workspace policy.
Outlook account
- Identify whether the unwanted item came from Events from email or from a meeting request.
- Disable email-derived events when those supported summaries are the problem.
- Block the sender when you want their messages routed to Junk Email, while recognizing that this is not a guarantee against all calendar invitations.
- If the mailbox is provided by another service, configure filtering with that provider rather than relying on Outlook’s controls.
iCloud account
- Choose whether invitations should arrive as notifications or email.
- Use Report Junk on a spam invitation at iCloud.com/calendar.
- Check every signed-in device after reporting; Apple says the reported event is removed across those devices.
What these settings do not promise
- Google’s known-senders setting does not block invitation email. It controls automatic calendar addition for new invitations.
- Google’s setting is not retroactive. Existing events require separate removal or reporting.
- Outlook’s email-event setting is not a universal meeting-request filter. It concerns supported content extracted from email.
- Outlook sender blocking is not a calendar guarantee. It routes blocked mail to Junk Email.
- iCloud’s Report Junk action addresses the reported invitation. Apple does not document it as a known-sender allowlist.
For most people using Google Calendar, Only if the sender is known is the direct answer. Choose the response-required option when even known senders must wait for your explicit email response. For Outlook and iCloud, use the narrower control that matches the source of the unwanted item instead of treating a mail filter or notification choice as a universal calendar block.
