Use Screen Time. On an iPhone, Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions is the central place to hide built-in apps, restrict app installations and purchases, filter websites, and set media ratings. For a child, newer iOS versions also provide Settings > Family > [child] > Apps & Websites for blocking an individual app or requiring approval before browsing.
Choose the control that matches the problem: a block removes access, a web filter controls categories, a rating setting limits media, and App Limits or Downtime controls when or how long an app can be used. The labels and availability can differ by iOS version, the child’s age, and country or region.
Choose the right kind of restriction
“Block an app” can mean several different things. Screen Time separates access controls from time controls, and web filtering is separate from media ratings. Starting with the intended result prevents a setting from appearing to work while leaving another route open.

| Goal | Use this control | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Hide an Apple-built-in app or feature | Allowed Apps & Features | Turns the selected built-in item off and temporarily hides it from the Home Screen; it is not deleted. |
| Block one installed app for a child | Family > child > Apps & Websites | Blocks the selected app; the icon remains dimmed on the Home Screen. |
| Prevent new downloads, redownloads, or purchases | iTunes & App Store Purchases | Controls installation and transaction actions. |
| Limit apps by age rating | App Store, Media, Web, & Games | Allows only apps within the chosen rating level. |
| Block one website | Web Content > Never Allow | Denies a specific address after a web-filter level is selected. |
| Filter adult sites broadly | Web Content > Limit Adult Websites | Uses Apple’s category filter and lets you add exceptions to Never Allow. |
| Allow only a short list of sites | Approved Websites Only (child controls) | Restricts browsing to sites you explicitly approve. |
| Require permission for new sites | Ask to Browse (child controls) | Requests approval when a child tries a new site in Safari and supported browser apps. |
| Reduce daily use | App Limits | Sets a daily allowance for an app or category. |
| Make apps unavailable at scheduled times | Downtime, with Block at Downtime | Restricts most apps during a schedule while calls, messages, and apps you allow remain available. |
These controls can be combined. For example, an age rating can prevent downloads of mature apps, while an App Limit manages the time spent in an otherwise permitted game.

Prepare the iPhone before changing restrictions
Decide whose phone you are managing
For your own iPhone, make the changes directly in Screen Time. For a child, you can configure controls on the child’s device or manage them through a Family Sharing group. Family management is useful when you need the settings to persist even when the child is not holding your phone, but the exact options depend on the family setup, software version, age, and region.
Use a Screen Time passcode
When iOS offers to create a Screen Time passcode while you enable restrictions, set one that the person using the phone cannot easily guess. Keep it separate from the device-unlock code. Without a passcode, a user who can open Settings may be able to change the restrictions. Apple’s current guidance does not describe one universal recovery procedure for every account and device arrangement, so confirm the account context before relying on a recovery option.
Update your expectations about labels
Apple moves controls between menus and changes wording between iOS releases. You may see App Store, Media, Web, & Games where an older release used a shorter name, or find child-specific controls under Family instead of on the child’s local Screen Time page. Follow the closest current label on the device rather than assuming a missing option means the feature is unsupported.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTurn on Content & Privacy Restrictions
- Open Settings.
- Tap Screen Time.
- Open Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Turn on Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- If prompted, create or enter the Screen Time passcode.
This switch activates the controls for built-in features, purchases, content ratings, and web access. It does not by itself set a time limit or block every website; those are separate settings described below.
Block or hide Apple-built-in apps and features
Use this method for built-in apps and system features that Apple exposes as toggleable items.

- Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Tap Allowed Apps & Features.
- Switch off the app or feature you want to restrict.
The item is temporarily hidden from the Home Screen rather than deleted from the iPhone. Turning the switch back on restores access. This menu is therefore appropriate when you want to remove a built-in distraction without removing data or uninstalling software.
Block an installed app on a child’s iPhone
Newer child-management controls provide a direct per-app block. The blocked app is dimmed on the Home Screen, which indicates that the restriction—not an incomplete installation—is preventing it from opening.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Family, then select the child.
- Open Apps & Websites.
- Select the app you want to restrict and choose the block control shown on the device.
The child controls are account- and age-aware. If you do not see this path, manage Screen Time on the child’s iPhone instead, or use the general Content & Privacy Restrictions menus available in that iOS release.
Stop app installations, purchases, and unsuitable downloads
Blocking an existing app does not necessarily prevent the same app from being downloaded again. Use the purchase and rating controls as a second layer.
Control App Store transactions
- Open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Tap iTunes & App Store Purchases (the wording can vary).
- Set the available actions for installing apps, deleting apps, in-app purchases, or redownloading purchases according to the choices shown.
Choose the most restrictive option for an action you do not want the user to perform. The exact list can differ by iOS version, so read each action rather than assuming one master “block purchases” switch covers every transaction.

Limit apps by age rating
- Return to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Open App Store, Media, Web, & Games.
- Choose the app-rating setting and select the highest rating you will allow.
An age-rating limit is a category rule, not a block on one named app. A compliant app can remain available even when another app from the same category is not. Use the per-app block when the target is a particular title.

For a known address, use the web-content controls rather than relying on an adult-site filter alone.
- Open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Tap App Store, Media, Web, & Games.
- Choose Web Content.
- Select Limit Adult Websites.
- Under Never Allow, add the website address you want to block.
Enter the address carefully, using the site name or URL format accepted by the field. This list is an explicit exception list: it is where you name a particular site that must not load. Selecting an adult-site filter without adding a known address does not guarantee that every unwanted site will be identified.
Understand the three web-access levels
| Web Content choice | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Unrestricted Access | Adults or supervised users who need normal browsing | Does not filter adult sites or require approval. |
| Limit Adult Websites | General child protection with the ability to name exceptions | Category filtering can miss a newly classified or unusual site; add known addresses to Never Allow. |
| Approved Websites Only | Very young children or tightly controlled school-like browsing | Every useful site must be approved, and the available list depends on the child-control interface. |
Approved Websites Only and Ask to Browse are child-focused controls documented in newer Apple guidance. They are not interchangeable with Never Allow: an approved-site list defines what can be used, while Never Allow names what cannot be used within a broader browsing mode.
Require approval before a child visits a new site
For a child managed through the newer Apps & Websites controls, turn on Ask to Browse when that option is offered. A request appears when the child tries a new site in Safari or a supported browser app. You can approve the site for continued access or decline the request. Sites already approved remain available unless you later block them.

Browser support and the placement of this setting depend on iOS version and region. If a third-party browser does not participate in the request flow, use Web Content restrictions and the App Store controls to limit that browser itself.
Block explicit music, podcasts, video, books, and other media
Website filtering does not control explicit material delivered through Apple media services. Set content ratings and explicitness independently.
- Open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Tap App Store, Media, Web, & Games.
- Open each relevant media-content category.
- Choose the allowed rating or the non-explicit option shown for that category.
Apple documents controls for:
- Music, music videos, and podcasts
- News and Fitness
- Movies and TV shows
- Books
- Apps and App Clips
Ratings and explicitness labels vary by service, iOS release, and region. Apply the setting to every category that matters; restricting movie ratings does not automatically set podcast or music preferences.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use App Limits when the problem is time, not access
Set a daily limit
- Open Settings > Screen Time.
- Tap App Limits.
- Choose Add Limit.
- Select one or more apps or a category.
- Set the daily allowance and save it.
App Limits are suitable when the user may have access but should spend less time there. They do not replace a content block: an app with a one-hour limit is still available until its allowance is reached.
Schedule Downtime
- Open Settings > Screen Time > Downtime.
- Set the start and end times for the schedule.
- Enable the option to block apps during Downtime if it is available.
- Review the apps that are allowed to remain available.
During Downtime, calls, messages, and apps you explicitly leave available can continue to work. With blocking enabled, restricted apps cannot simply be opened after the schedule begins. Use this for bedtime, school hours, or another recurring period rather than for a permanent ban.

Configure a child’s iPhone through Family controls
Family Sharing can let a parent or guardian manage a child’s Screen Time settings from the organizer’s device. The child’s age and country or region affect which protections appear. Apple says communication and web-content defaults can be enabled for children under 18, but the applicable age thresholds are not identical everywhere.
When configuring a child, review these areas separately:
- Apps & Websites: per-app blocks, Ask to Browse, and approved-site behavior where supported.
- Content & Privacy Restrictions: purchases, downloads, ratings, and system-feature access.
- Web Content: adult-site filtering and Never Allow entries.
- App Limits and Downtime: duration and schedule controls.
- Communication Safety: a separate feature that can detect certain sensitive imagery in supported contexts; it is not a website filter and does not block an app by itself.
After changing a setting, check the child’s device while signed in to the child’s account. A family-level rule and a local device rule can expose different labels, and a browser or media service may have its own age or region behavior.

| You want to hide a built-in distraction | Allowed Apps & Features | Removes the icon temporarily without deleting the built-in app. |
| You need to stop one game on a child’s phone | Child Apps & Websites block, plus purchase restrictions | The app is blocked now and less likely to be reinstalled. |
| You know the exact site to deny | Limit Adult Websites, then Never Allow | Combines category filtering with an explicit URL rule. |
| You want a tightly curated browser | Approved Websites Only | Browsing is limited to sites you approve rather than to a category guess. |
| You want permission for unfamiliar sites | Ask to Browse | New-site requests come to the responsible adult where supported. |
| You want to prevent mature media | Media ratings and explicitness controls | These settings cover Apple media categories that a browser filter cannot govern. |
| You want less evening use | Downtime with Block at Downtime | Applies a schedule while preserving selected essential apps. |
Troubleshoot restrictions that appear not to work
The menu name is different
Compare the current labels with the paths above. Apple may shorten or expand App Store, Media, Web, & Games, and child controls may appear under Family. Update the iPhone if an expected feature is absent, then check whether the option is limited by age or region.
The app is still visible
A dimmed icon generally means a child-app block is active. A built-in app switched off under Allowed Apps & Features is hidden rather than removed. Neither result is the same as uninstalling the app.
A blocked website still seems reachable
- Confirm that Web Content is not set to Unrestricted Access.
- Check the exact address in Never Allow.
- Remember that an approved-site list and a Never Allow list operate differently.
- Check other browsers installed on the phone; restrict or remove a browser that does not honor the child approval flow.
- Verify the test is being performed in the child’s account and after the setting has synchronized.
Mature media is still available
Review each media category individually. A web restriction cannot replace ratings for music, podcasts, News, Fitness, movies, TV shows, books, apps, or App Clips. Labels and available ratings can differ by region.
The user can change the setting
Make sure Content & Privacy Restrictions is on and protected by a Screen Time passcode that the user does not know. If you cannot remember the passcode, do not assume that one recovery path applies to every Family Sharing and account configuration; verify the device’s current recovery choices before resetting anything.
A time limit is being ignored
Check whether you set an App Limit when you actually needed a block, and whether Downtime has its blocking option enabled. Review the Always Allowed list so an app was not deliberately left available during the scheduled period.
Quick Recap
Verify the setup with a short checklist
- Content & Privacy Restrictions is switched on.
- The Screen Time passcode is set and not shared with the restricted user.
- Built-in apps are configured under Allowed Apps & Features.
- Installations, deletions, redownloads, and in-app purchases have the intended permissions.
- The app-rating ceiling matches the child’s age and your policy.
- Web Content uses the intended level: Unrestricted Access, Limit Adult Websites, or an approved-sites approach.
- Every known unwanted URL appears under Never Allow when using that mode.
- Explicitness and rating settings are applied to each relevant media category.
- App Limits and Downtime are used only for duration and schedule goals.
- Family, age, region, and browser differences have been checked on the actual child account.
