To stop one AI app from connecting to the internet while leaving other programs alone, create a Bitdefender Firewall rule for that app’s Windows executable and set its permission to Deny. Use the narrowest network, protocol and traffic-direction scope that meets your goal. This blocks network access; it does not stop the app from launching.
What a Bitdefender block actually does
A Bitdefender Firewall rule controls an application’s network and internet traffic. When the rule targets the AI app’s executable and its permission is set to Deny, Bitdefender describes the result this way: “The specified application will be denied network / Internet access under the specified circumstances.” See Bitdefender’s Firewall instructions.
The rule does not uninstall the app, close a process that is already running, or prevent Windows from launching it. If you need to stop execution entirely, that is a different control, generally found in managed business products rather than the consumer Firewall panel.
The steps below are for Windows. Bitdefender has more than one consumer interface, so your menus may follow either of the documented paths. Do not assume that a macOS installation has the same labels or rule editor.

Before you change the Firewall
Decide exactly what “block” means for your situation. If you want the AI client installed and usable for offline work but unable to sign in, synchronize or send prompts to a cloud service, a per-application Firewall rule is appropriate. If the requirement is that nobody can open the program, use an application-execution control instead; changing the Firewall will not accomplish that.
Write down the app name, the behavior you want to stop and whether the restriction should apply on every network or only on public, home or office networks. This makes it easier to choose the rule’s conditions and to reverse the change later. Keep the Bitdefender Rules list available so you can edit or remove only the entry you create, rather than changing a general protection setting.
Close the AI application before final testing. A process that was already connected can remain open until it is quit, and a launcher or helper may continue running after the main window disappears. Restarting the app after saving the rule gives you a cleaner test.

Bitdefender’s application rule editor works with an executable file. Selecting the correct file is the most important way to avoid interrupting unrelated work applications.
Use the running process to locate the file
- Start the AI application and leave it open.
- Open Windows Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - On the Processes or Details tab, locate the application process.
- Right-click the process and choose Open file location (or open the executable’s properties and note its path).
- Record the full path and file name, including the
.exeextension.
Some AI products use a launcher plus one or more helper processes. A rule for one executable may not cover every helper, updater or background service. Start with the executable that makes the network connections you want to stop. Add another rule only if testing shows that a separate, clearly identified process still communicates.
Check that you are not selecting a shared component
Do not choose a generic browser, system host process or shared runtime merely because the AI service opens inside it. Blocking a shared executable can affect many unrelated sites or applications. If the AI product is a browser tab rather than a standalone program, a local application firewall rule may be broader than you intend; a website-specific protection exception is a separate option discussed later.
Verify the path as well as the filename. Two files can have similar names while belonging to different products, and an update can install a replacement in a new folder. A rule tied to the wrong copy may appear to work while leaving the real network process untouched.
Create the deny rule in the current Bitdefender app
Bitdefender’s newer consumer documentation for Windows uses this route: Services → Protection → Firewall → Rules → Add rule. The article is titled How to Add a Firewall Exception in Bitdefender App (Windows).
- Open the Bitdefender application.
- Select Services, then Protection.
- Open Firewall and choose Rules.
- Click Add rule.
- Browse to the AI app’s actual executable and select it. Do not select an all-applications option.
- In the permission control, choose Deny. “Allow” permits network or internet access; “Deny” prevents it when the rule’s conditions match.
- Set the network type, IP protocol and traffic direction, then save the rule.
If the app is already running, close it and start it again after saving. A fresh launch makes it easier to tell whether the rule affects its connections.

If your interface uses the older Firewall menu
Another official consumer guide uses this route: Protection → Firewall → Settings → Rules → Add rule. Open How to allow an app or program through Bitdefender Firewall if those are the labels shown in your installation.
- Open Protection, then Firewall.
- Select Settings and open Rules.
- Choose Add rule.
- Select the AI application’s executable file.
- Change the rule permission to Deny.
- Review the network, protocol and direction fields before saving.
- Save the rule and test the AI app and an unrelated work app.
The two paths lead to the same type of per-application firewall rule. If neither path appears, your subscription, product edition or interface version may differ; do not change broad firewall settings just to reproduce a menu from another version.
Choose the narrowest rule scope that meets your goal
The rule editor provides more control than a simple on/off switch. Limiting the conditions reduces the chance of collateral effects on other software.

For the common goal of preventing an installed AI client from reaching its service, outbound traffic is usually the relevant direction. If you are unsure whether it also accepts incoming connections, use the least disruptive setting first, test it, and expand the scope only if the app still communicates. The available fields and their meanings are described in Bitdefender’s consumer rule guidance.
For example, an app that should be offline on every connection may need Any Network, the applicable protocol setting and Outbound. An app that should be restricted only on public Wi-Fi can use Public while leaving Home/Office behavior unchanged. A rule limited to inbound traffic will not normally stop a client from initiating its own cloud connection, while a rule limited to one protocol may leave another protocol available.
Do not disable the entire Firewall or select a system-wide block when the requirement is limited to one application. A per-executable rule is the control that keeps normal connectivity and unrelated work apps outside the change.

Test the targeted AI app
- Quit the AI application completely, including any tray icon or background process you can identify.
- Launch it again and attempt the network-dependent action, such as signing in, synchronizing or loading a cloud response.
- Confirm that the app can still open locally if that is expected. A firewall deny rule is not an execution block.
A failed sign-in or unavailable online feature indicates that the selected executable and rule scope are affecting its network traffic. It does not prove that every process belonging to the product is blocked.
Test unrelated work applications
Open the programs you need for work and exercise their normal network functions: load a document from a shared service, send a test message, connect to a collaboration service or open an internal site. If those applications continue to work, the per-application scope is behaving as intended.
Test on each network category that matters to you. A rule restricted to Public will not demonstrate the same behavior on a Home/Office connection, and a protocol-specific rule cannot be judged by testing traffic that uses a different protocol.

If the AI product still connects, check whether it launched a second executable. Compare the process name and file location with the rule you created. Add a rule for the additional, verified executable rather than broadening the first rule to all applications.

Bitdefender’s troubleshooting guidance recommends confirming whether the Firewall is the cause: temporarily disable the Firewall and check whether connectivity returns. This is a diagnostic test, not a permanent configuration.
- Save your work and temporarily turn off the Bitdefender Firewall.
- Retry the affected work application.
- If it still fails, the cause is elsewhere; re-enable the Firewall immediately and investigate the application, network or another protection module.
- If it works with the Firewall disabled, re-enable the Firewall.
- Return to the Rules list and edit or remove only the rule that matches the executable you changed. Check its network type, protocol and traffic direction.
- Test the work application again.
Bitdefender documents editing and deleting existing application rules in the same consumer Firewall material. Removing a mistaken rule is safer than weakening the entire Firewall. If you cannot identify which rule is responsible, review recent rules one at a time and retest after each targeted change.
Pay particular attention to rules created for a shared browser or runtime. If the AI service runs in a browser, the browser rule can explain why unrelated websites stopped working. In that case, remove the broad rule and consider whether the actual goal is to address a particular website through Online Threat Prevention instead.

GravityZone Application Control provides Test Mode and Production Mode. Bitdefender advises validating rules and policies in Test Mode before enforcing them in Production Mode. That workflow is relevant to managed endpoints, not a replacement for the consumer Firewall rule described above.

These controls should not be mixed casually. A consumer subscriber may be able to deny traffic but not install the business execution-control features, while a managed organization may have policy enforcement handled centrally by an endpoint agent. Check the product, license and operating-system requirements before planning an execution block.
Do not use a website exception for a local app block
Bitdefender’s Online Threat Prevention exception guidance addresses websites or URLs that Bitdefender flags, including some online applications. It does not create a deny rule for a local program’s network traffic.
- Use a Firewall rule when the goal is “this installed executable must not communicate.”
- Use an Online Threat Prevention exception only when a trusted website or URL is being blocked and you intend to allow that web destination.
Adding a website exception will not reliably prevent a desktop AI client from connecting, and adding a firewall rule will not necessarily resolve a browser warning about a particular URL.
Handling apps with launchers, helpers and updates
Multiple executables
Some applications separate their user interface, network service and updater into different files. After the first deny rule, observe which process makes the remaining connection. Create additional per-executable rules only for verified components of the same app. Keep each rule named clearly so you can identify it later.

Do not assume that a process with the product’s name is safe to block without checking its path. A launcher can start a different signed component, and a helper can be shared by more than one feature. The safest sequence is to identify the process, record its location, add one rule and test before adding another.
Automatic updates
A blocked client may still be updated by a separate updater process. Decide whether you want to block only the app’s normal use or also its update traffic. Blocking an updater can leave software on an older version and may affect security or compatibility. If you create an updater rule, record that decision and review it when you intentionally update the product.
Services and reinstalls
If an installer replaces the executable, its path or file identity may change. A rule tied to the old file may no longer match. After a major update or reinstall, verify the executable path and review the Rules list rather than assuming the old rule still applies.

The consumer procedures cited here are Windows-oriented and use Windows .exe files. Menu names can vary between the newer Bitdefender App interface and the older Firewall settings layout. Subscription features also differ, so the presence of a Firewall page or a particular rule field is not guaranteed for every edition.
Business GravityZone documentation is a separate product context. Its Firewall rules cover Windows and macOS endpoints, while the cited Application Control documentation lists Windows workstations and servers. Availability can depend on the license, endpoint agent and operating system. Do not apply a GravityZone policy assumption to a consumer installation, or assume that a consumer menu exists on macOS.
If the required controls are missing, identify your Bitdefender product and edition before changing anything else. A missing menu is not a reason to disable protection globally. It may simply indicate that the documented workflow belongs to a different interface or license.
Remove or revise the block later
- Open the Bitdefender Firewall Rules list using the path shown in your interface.
- Find the entry associated with the AI app’s executable.
- Edit the rule to change its scope or permission, or delete it to restore the previous default behavior.
- Save the change and restart the application so it establishes new connections.
- Test the AI app and your work applications again.
Keep the rule limited to the named executable. If your objective changes from a total network block to a restriction on public networks only, change the network-type condition instead of creating a broad, duplicate rule.
After an update, review duplicate or obsolete entries. An old path may remain in the list while the current executable uses a new location. Removing stale rules keeps later troubleshooting understandable and reduces the chance that you will edit the wrong entry.

A practical decision checklist
- Need to keep the app installed but offline? Use a consumer Firewall deny rule for its executable.
- Need to prevent launching? Use a supported managed application-execution control; a Firewall rule is not sufficient.
- Want to avoid collateral effects? Select one verified executable and the narrowest network, protocol and direction scope.
- Still seeing connections? Check for helper, launcher or updater executables and add rules only after identifying them.
- A work app broke? Temporarily test with the Firewall disabled, re-enable it, then edit or remove only the rule responsible.
- A website is being flagged? Use the Online Threat Prevention workflow, not an application firewall rule.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a Bitdefender Firewall deny rule stop the AI app from opening?
No. It controls network and internet traffic for the selected executable. The app may still launch and provide offline features. Use a supported application-execution control if preventing launch is the actual requirement.

Which Windows executable should I select?
Use Task Manager to find the running process, open its file location and select that verified .exe file. Do not select a browser, system host or shared runtime simply because the AI service appears inside it.
Why are there two different Bitdefender menu paths?
Bitdefender documents both a newer Bitdefender App route, Services → Protection → Firewall → Rules → Add rule, and an older Protection → Firewall → Settings → Rules → Add rule route. The labels depend on the product interface and version.
Should I choose Outbound or Both?
Outbound is generally the relevant direction when preventing a client from initiating cloud connections. Choose Both only when you also need to deny incoming traffic. Test the narrowest setting first and expand it only if the app still communicates.
What if the AI app still connects after I add the rule?
Check whether it uses a launcher, helper, updater or background service with a different executable. Identify that process and add a separate rule only for the verified component. Also review whether the first rule is limited to the wrong network type or protocol.
Could this rule break my browser or work tools?
A rule for the correctly identified AI executable should not affect unrelated programs. Blocking a shared browser or runtime can have broader effects, so test your normal work applications and remove any rule tied to a shared component.
Is an Online Threat Prevention exception an alternative?
No. That feature addresses websites or URLs that Bitdefender flags. Use a Firewall rule to deny traffic from an installed local executable; use a website exception only when you intend to allow a trusted web destination.
How should a business administrator block the app from running?
GravityZone Application Control and Application Blacklisting are separate managed controls for execution. Platform, license and agent requirements apply, and Bitdefender recommends validating Application Control policies in Test Mode before Production Mode.
The Bottom Line
For a Windows consumer installation, identify the AI app’s exact executable, add a Bitdefender Firewall rule, choose Deny, and limit the network, protocol and direction scope to what you need. Restart and test the AI app plus your work tools. If the app must not launch, use a supported managed application-control feature instead; a Firewall rule only blocks communications.
