There is no single Galaxy setting that removes every advertisement embedded in third-party apps. The dependable fix is to identify the app producing the ads and uninstall it, or use that app’s own ad-free or notification controls. Samsung Internet’s pop-up and ad-blocker settings apply to web pages, not automatically to ads inside other apps. Android privacy settings can reduce ad personalization, but they do not guarantee an ad-free phone.
First, identify where the ad appears
The correct fix depends on whether the advertisement is part of one app, appears over other screens, arrives as a notification, shows on the Lock screen, or appears only while browsing. These are different delivery paths, so a browser blocker or privacy setting may leave an in-app advertisement unchanged.

Make a quick symptom record
Before changing settings, note the exact screen, time and frequency. Record whether the ad appears only after opening one app, immediately after unlocking, or while no app is open. If there is a small app name, icon, “Why this ad?” link or notification header, capture it. This prevents you from confusing a browser page with an overlay and makes it easier to test one suspect at a time.
Also note what changed just before the problem began. Samsung specifically points to apps downloaded or updated shortly before unexpected advertising starts. An app that has been installed for months is not impossible as a cause, but a recent change is a more useful first lead.

Remove an app that is generating advertisements
If ads began after installing or updating an app, treat that app as the leading suspect. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends reviewing apps added or updated shortly before the problem started.
Review recent installations and updates
- Open Settings and review the list of installed apps. Sort or filter by recently installed or recently updated when your Galaxy model offers that option.
- Make a short list of apps added or updated immediately before the ads appeared. Give extra attention to free utilities, wallpaper tools, launchers, battery tools, QR scanners, file managers, and similar apps you do not recognize or no longer need.
- Open each suspect app’s information page and check whether it has notification permission, permission to appear on top of other apps, or an unfamiliar name that differs from its icon.
- Uninstall the strongest suspect, restart the phone, and use it normally for a while. If the ads stop, you have identified the source. If they continue, restore the app only if necessary and test the next suspect.
Uninstalling is more decisive than changing an advertising identifier because it removes the code that is displaying the ad. If you need the app, look first for an official ad-free purchase, an option to disable promotional notifications, or a setting that controls recommendations. Those options vary by developer and are not guaranteed to remove every advertisement.
Use Safe mode to isolate third-party apps
Safe mode starts the phone without running third-party apps. It is useful when an ad appears over the Home screen, Settings, or another app and you cannot tell which installed program is responsible.

- Open your Galaxy model’s power menu and enter Safe mode using the method shown for that device. Samsung’s menu labels and entry method can vary by model and software version.
- Use the phone in Safe mode long enough to reproduce the problem. Because downloaded apps are not running, an overlay that disappears in Safe mode points toward a third-party app.
- Restart normally, then uninstall recently added or updated apps one at a time, starting with the most suspicious.
- After each removal, test again. Keep the app removed if the advertisements stop; do not reinstall an app that immediately recreates the problem unless you have confirmed it is safe and necessary.
Safe mode does not identify the exact app by itself. It tells you whether the cause is likely a downloaded app rather than a built-in Galaxy component. If the same advertisement still appears in Safe mode, focus on Samsung features, browser pages, or the possibility that the ad is being mistaken for a system notice.
Run Samsung’s app-safety diagnostic
On Galaxy phones that expose the current Samsung US layout, open Settings > Device care > Diagnostics > App safety Diagnostics. The tool can flag suspicious applications for review. Other models may place the check under a different Device care or security label; if you cannot find the path, search Settings for Diagnostics, App safety, or Device care.
A clean diagnostic result does not prove that an app is harmless or that it cannot show advertising. Combine the result with the installation timeline, permissions, Safe mode test, and the behavior you can reproduce.
Check an app’s own controls before deleting it
Some apps offer a paid ad-free tier, a one-time purchase, or a switch for promotional messages. Open the app’s settings and look for terms such as ads, advertising, promotions, recommendations or privacy. Read the description carefully: disabling marketing notifications usually affects messages sent through notifications, while banner or video placements inside the app may remain.

If the app is essential and has no supported option, the practical choices are to tolerate its in-app advertising, use a paid alternative, or replace it with another app.

Stop Lock screen ads
Lock screen advertising has two documented Galaxy causes: a third-party app installed or updated recently, or Samsung Global Goals when its Lock screen ads feature is enabled.
Check Samsung Global Goals
- Open the Samsung Global Goals app if it is installed.
- Open its settings and look for the Lock screen advertising option.
- Disable Lock screen ads if you do not want the feature, then lock and unlock the phone to confirm the change.
The exact labels can differ by region and software release. If Global Goals is not installed or its setting is already disabled, continue with the third-party-app checks rather than changing unrelated Lock screen settings.
Look for a recently changed app
When the Lock screen suddenly starts showing promotions, review apps downloaded or updated shortly beforehand. Remove the likely source and restart. If the behavior disappears in Safe mode, use the normal-mode uninstall process to find the offending app.

An advertisement that opens over Settings, the Home screen, or another app is not a normal web pop-up. It is usually being drawn by an installed app. Notification ads have a related but separate path.
For full-screen or overlay advertisements
- Note the app name, icon, or wording shown when the ad appears. Even a small label can identify the source.
- Check apps installed or updated around the time the behavior began.
- Use Safe mode to confirm whether a third-party app is involved.
- Uninstall the suspect app and restart normally.
- Review permissions for apps you keep, especially permission to appear on top of other apps. Remove that permission when it is not required for the app’s purpose.
Do not assume that changing the browser’s pop-up setting will stop an overlay generated by an app. Browser controls cannot establish control over another app’s advertising code.
For advertising notifications
- When the notification appears, identify the sending app from the notification header.
- Touch and hold the notification, then open its notification settings if your model offers that shortcut.
- Disable the promotional notification category, or uninstall the app if you do not need it.
Turning off a notification category prevents that alert from reaching you. It does not remove banner ads that the same app displays after you open it; use the app’s own settings or uninstall it for that.
Block advertisements while browsing
If the advertisements occur only on websites, use the browser’s controls. Samsung documents these settings for Samsung Internet and distinguishes them from ads embedded in other apps.
Samsung Internet
- Open Samsung Internet.
- Open the browser menu and choose Settings.
- Open Privacy dashboard and enable Block pop-ups.
- Return to the browser menu and open Ad blockers.
- Review the suggested downloads and install one only if you trust it and it is compatible with your device and region.
Samsung notes that some suggested ad-blocking downloads may not be free. These tools work within Samsung Internet. They do not prove that advertising inside a game, utility, social app, or another browser is blocked.

Chrome
Chrome has its own pop-up and advertising privacy controls. Change them from Chrome’s settings rather than from Samsung Internet. Because Chrome’s labels and organization can change, use the Settings search for pop-ups or intrusive ads if you cannot find the relevant section. These controls likewise apply to pages rendered in Chrome.
Reduce personalized advertising without expecting removal
Android separates ad personalization from ad delivery. You can limit information that apps use to suggest advertisements, yet the ad space may remain and related ads can still be shown.
Turn off app-suggested ads
- Open Settings.
- Choose Google.
- Open All services, then Privacy & security.
- Choose Ads, then Ads privacy.
- Open App suggested ads and turn off Allow app-suggested ads.
Google explains that blocked apps will no longer store ad suggestions with Android, but you may still receive ads related to those apps. This is a targeting control, not a universal ad blocker.

Manage the advertising ID
Samsung’s privacy guidance also describes controls for resetting the advertising ID or preventing apps from using it. The location and wording vary by Galaxy model, Android release, and region. In Settings, search for Ads, Advertising ID, or Privacy and follow the available controls.
Resetting an ID can change the identifier associated with future ad requests, while disabling its use can limit one personalization signal. Neither action removes the ad framework built into an app, and neither guarantees that advertisements disappear.
Compare the remedies by certainty and coverage
The most reliable remedy depends on both where the ad appears and whether you are willing to remove the source app. Uninstalling a confirmed ad-generating app has a direct effect but also removes access to that app. An app’s own paid option may preserve access, but its availability and coverage are controlled by the developer. Safe mode is a diagnostic step, not a permanent blocker. Browser settings are effective only for pages displayed by that browser. Privacy settings change targeting signals and are the least certain option if your goal is to make ad spaces disappear.

Common mistakes and how to recover
Expecting one switch to block every ad
The Samsung and Google instructions do not document a Galaxy-wide switch that reliably strips advertising from every third-party app. Treat claims that a single privacy toggle will remove all in-app ads cautiously.

Confusing browser pop-ups with in-app ads
Samsung Internet’s Block pop-ups option is appropriate for websites. If an ad appears while you are not browsing, investigate installed apps instead.
Changing privacy settings and assuming the ad is gone
App-suggested-ad and advertising-ID settings affect personalization signals. They do not uninstall an app, disable its ad SDK, or guarantee that its ad spaces are empty.
Deleting the wrong app
Record the time the ad appears and the screen on which it appears before removing anything. Use Safe mode and remove suspects one at a time so you can identify the cause without losing several useful apps.
Following an outdated menu path
Samsung warns that Settings names and layouts change between Galaxy models and software versions. Use the Settings search when a path is absent, and look for the feature name—such as Device care, Diagnostics, App safety, or Ads—rather than assuming every phone has the same menu.

Safety diagnostics can help flag suspicious software, but ordinary ad-supported apps may not be marked as threats. Continue with the timing, permissions and Safe mode checks even when the diagnostic reports no problem.

- Check recent installations and updates.
- Run Safe mode and compare the behavior.
- Use Device care’s available app-safety diagnostic.
- Remove the confirmed or most likely third-party source.
- Only after source-app checks, adjust browser settings or ad-personalization controls for the remaining type of advertising.
If the problem survives Safe mode and no third-party app or Global Goals setting explains it, document the exact screen, timing, and software version before contacting Samsung support. Menu availability and advertising behavior can differ by model, region, and release, so those details help support staff reproduce the issue.

Why do Samsung Internet ad blockers not stop ads in my games?
Samsung Internet’s Block pop-ups and Ad blockers settings apply to pages opened in Samsung Internet. A game displays its own content and advertising code, so it requires the game’s settings, an alternative app, or removal of the game.
How do I find an app that puts ads over the Home screen?
Check apps installed or updated shortly before the behavior began, then test the phone in Safe mode. If the overlay disappears there, restart normally and uninstall recent suspects one at a time. Review which apps have permission to appear on top of other apps.
Will turning off app-suggested ads remove advertisements?
