Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
To block ads for devices connected through an OpenVPN tunnel, run Pi-hole on a host the VPN can reach, then push Pi-hole’s VPN-side address to clients from the OpenVPN server configuration. For example, if Pi-hole is reachable at 10.8.0.1, add push "dhcp-option DNS 10.8.0.1", restart OpenVPN, reconnect every client, and verify that it lists 10.8.0.1 as its DNS server.
Do not push 127.0.0.1, and do not leave a different secondary DNS server configured. Either omit the secondary server or point it at Pi-hole as well; otherwise a device can send blocked-domain lookups elsewhere and bypass the blocklists.
What this setup does
Pi-hole works as a DNS resolver with domain blocklists. When a connected device asks for the address of an advertising, tracking, or other blocked domain, Pi-hole returns a blocked response instead of the destination address. Because the decision happens at DNS resolution time, the same policy can cover phones, computers, televisions, and other clients that use the VPN.
OpenVPN supplies the private path to that resolver. A client first connects to the VPN, receives routes and DNS options from the OpenVPN server, and then sends DNS queries to Pi-hole through the tunnel. The browser or application still makes the final connection itself, so DNS blocking is not a replacement for a content blocker. It will not remove every first-party advertisement, hide an advert already embedded in an IP response, or block content that is delivered from the same hostname as legitimate content.

The arrangement only works when three pieces line up:
- Pi-hole is installed on a machine reachable from the VPN network.
- Pi-hole listens on the interface and address that VPN clients can reach.
- OpenVPN pushes that reachable address, and clients actually accept and use the pushed DNS option.
A published percentage for “DNS-level ad-blocking effectiveness” is not established here. Results depend on the blocklists, applications, client behavior, and whether any alternate resolver remains available.

| Component | What it must provide | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Pi-hole host | A stable address reachable from the VPN tunnel | 10.8.0.1 on the tunnel-side network |
| OpenVPN server | A server configuration that pushes Pi-hole as DNS | push "dhcp-option DNS 10.8.0.1" |
| VPN client | Acceptance of the pushed DNS option | Windows, Android, Linux, or macOS client |
| DNS listener | Pi-hole listening on the VPN-facing interface | Pi-hole’s local-interface setting |
Use the actual tunnel address from your installation; 10.8.0.1 is only an example. A common mistake is confusing the server’s loopback address with its tunnel address. 127.0.0.1 means “this individual device,” so on a phone or laptop it points back to that client rather than to the Pi-hole host.
Install Pi-hole on a reachable host
Choose where Pi-hole runs
Community setup guides describe running Pi-hole in Docker, in a virtual machine, or directly on dedicated hardware. Choose a host that remains powered on, has a predictable address, and can communicate with the OpenVPN tunnel. The host does not have to be the same machine as the VPN server, but the VPN must be able to route DNS traffic to it.
Install Pi-hole using the current method documented for your operating system or container platform. Installer commands and supported versions change, so confirm the present Pi-hole instructions before executing a command copied from an older guide. During installation, record the address that will be reachable from the tunnel; if that address changes later, clients will continue trying the old resolver until the OpenVPN configuration is updated.
Check for a port-53 conflict
DNS normally uses port 53. On Ubuntu and Debian systems, systemd-resolved can already occupy that port and prevent Pi-hole from binding to it. If Pi-hole reports that port 53 is unavailable, inspect the host’s listening services before changing Pi-hole settings. A command such as ss -ltnup | grep ':53' can show which process owns the port; the exact remediation depends on your distribution and resolver design.

Do not disable a resolver blindly on a production host. First determine whether the service is needed for the host itself, then follow the current Pi-hole and distribution documentation for a compatible listener arrangement. The important result is that Pi-hole, not another local process, answers DNS queries arriving from the VPN interface.

Make Pi-hole listen on the VPN side
Set the local-interface mode
PiVPN guidance specifies this command for making Pi-hole listen on all interfaces:
pihole -a -i local
Run it on the Pi-hole host with the privileges required by your installation. The setting is intended to allow queries arriving through the VPN-facing interface rather than only queries from the host’s ordinary LAN. If your deployment uses a container or a different Pi-hole management method, apply the equivalent listener setting in that platform’s current documentation.
Confirm reachability and firewall rules
The VPN server and Pi-hole host need a route between the tunnel network and the Pi-hole address. A host firewall, container network, or cloud security group can still block DNS even when the route exists. Permit DNS traffic from the VPN client network to Pi-hole as narrowly as practical, normally for UDP and TCP port 53. Avoid exposing the resolver to the public internet merely to make remote clients work.
Recommended Free Tools
Test from a connected client after the OpenVPN change described below. A successful VPN handshake alone does not prove that DNS packets can reach Pi-hole; the client must be able to send a query to the specific tunnel-side address.
Push Pi-hole’s address from OpenVPN
Find the correct tunnel address
Use the address assigned to the OpenVPN server on the tunnel network, or the Pi-hole host’s address on a network routed through that tunnel. Your server configuration may use a different private range. The value in the DNS push line must be an address that VPN clients can route to and that Pi-hole is listening on.
Never substitute 127.0.0.1. A Pi-hole forum reply specifically advised that the server configuration should push the tunnel-range address, such as 10.8.0.1. Another forum report described Android falling back to Google DNS when loopback was pushed; that report is an individual user observation, so treat it as a warning rather than a universal Android behavior.
Edit the server configuration
Open the OpenVPN server configuration used by your active instance. Remove old push "dhcp-option DNS ..." entries before adding the Pi-hole entry, so clients do not receive an unintended resolver in addition to Pi-hole.

For a tunnel where Pi-hole is reachable at 10.8.0.1, the relevant line is:
push "dhcp-option DNS 10.8.0.1"
Use one push line per DNS server. Do not place multiple IP addresses in one dhcp-option DNS line. OpenVPN community guidance documents the one-line-per-server form, and an OpenVPN issue reported that OpenVPN 2.4 rejected a second IP that an earlier 2.3 setup silently ignored. Because directive behavior can vary by version, check the configuration syntax for the OpenVPN version installed on your server.
If you intentionally operate more than one Pi-hole resolver, repeat the directive with the second reachable Pi-hole address. If you have only one Pi-hole, a second public resolver defeats strict enforcement: clients may query it directly or fail over to it for a blocked name. Leave the secondary field empty on clients, or configure the same Pi-hole address as the secondary only when the client interface requires two entries.
Restart the active OpenVPN service
Save the server configuration and restart the OpenVPN service that owns that configuration. Service-unit names differ between distributions and between older and newer OpenVPN packaging, so identify the active unit in your operating system’s service manager rather than assuming a particular unit name. A restart is required before newly connecting clients receive the changed option; clients already connected may need to disconnect and reconnect as well.

Verify the DNS setting on every client
Verification must happen on the client, not only on the VPN server. Connect to OpenVPN, wait for the tunnel to finish establishing, then inspect the active DNS servers. The Pi-hole tunnel address should appear as the resolver. Also perform a DNS lookup for a domain that your Pi-hole lists as blocked and confirm that the query is reaching Pi-hole’s logs.
Windows
On Windows, open a Command Prompt and run:
ipconfig /all
Inspect the OpenVPN adapter and look for the DNS Servers field. The pushed address should be listed there. A Pi-hole forum user running Windows 10 reported that the pushed DNS value did not apply automatically and had to be entered on the adapter manually. If your client behaves that way, open Network Connections, select the OpenVPN adapter, choose Properties, open Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and enter the Pi-hole address under the DNS settings. Reconnect the VPN and run ipconfig /all again to confirm which resolver Windows is actually using.

Manual adapter changes can persist after the VPN disconnects, so record what you changed and remove or adjust it if it interferes with the computer’s normal network later. Also check whether IPv6 or another adapter is supplying a separate DNS path; a correct IPv4 entry alone does not prove every application will use Pi-hole.

Use the resolver tool provided by your distribution, such as resolvectl status, and inspect the interface created by OpenVPN. The Pi-hole address should be associated with that VPN link. If the system uses a desktop network manager, inspect its active connection details as well. A client-side OpenVPN script may be needed to parse pushed options on non-Windows systems when the resolver manager does not apply them automatically.
macOS
Check the DNS servers shown for the active VPN service in the network settings, then test with a command-line lookup such as nslookup example.com. The displayed server should be the Pi-hole address, not a public resolver inherited from Wi-Fi or another VPN profile. Disconnect other VPNs while testing so that you can identify which service supplied the DNS configuration.
Android
Android clients can behave differently depending on the OpenVPN application and the device’s Private DNS setting. Confirm that the OpenVPN profile reports the Pi-hole address, then check whether Private DNS is set to a provider hostname that bypasses the tunnel. If DNS queries still appear at a public provider, remove the conflicting setting for the test, reconnect, and inspect Pi-hole’s query log. Do not use 127.0.0.1 in the server push; the reported Android fallback problem is one reason to avoid it.
Prevent DNS bypass
Remove competing secondary resolvers
A device may receive Pi-hole as its primary DNS and retain a different secondary DNS from the local network, operating system, or manually entered adapter settings. For domains on a Pi-hole blocklist, that secondary path can return an address even when Pi-hole would block it. Clear the alternate value or set both entries to Pi-hole, using separate OpenVPN push lines only when you operate multiple Pi-hole addresses.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check applications that use encrypted DNS
Some browsers and applications can use their own encrypted DNS service instead of the operating system resolver. If Pi-hole logs show no query while the application continues resolving names, inspect that application’s secure-DNS or DNS-over-HTTPS setting. Enforcement details differ by operating system and application; the basic diagnostic is to compare the application’s behavior with a command-line lookup and Pi-hole’s query log.
Keep the VPN route in scope
Split-tunnel profiles may route only selected traffic through OpenVPN. Ensure the route to Pi-hole’s address is included, even when ordinary web traffic intentionally exits through the local network. If the client cannot reach the Pi-hole address while the tunnel is up, changing DNS directives alone will not fix the path.

Troubleshoot common failures
The VPN connects, but no client shows Pi-hole
- Confirm that the edited file belongs to the OpenVPN server instance the client actually uses.
- Check for an older
push "dhcp-option DNS ..."line in an included file. - Restart the correct service and reconnect the client; a running session may still have the old options.
- Verify the address is the tunnel-side Pi-hole address, not
127.0.0.1or an unreachable LAN address.
Pi-hole shows no queries
- Confirm Pi-hole is listening on the VPN-facing interface with
pihole -a -i local. - Check host and container firewall rules for UDP and TCP port 53 from the VPN network.
- Test the route to the Pi-hole address while connected.
- Look for a port-53 conflict with
systemd-resolvedor another local resolver.
Blocked domains still resolve
- Inspect the client’s complete DNS list for a secondary public resolver.
- Check whether the application uses its own encrypted DNS setting.
- Confirm that the requested domain is present in the active Pi-hole lists and that the client query appears in Pi-hole’s log.
- Test again after clearing the client’s DNS cache or restarting the application.
OpenVPN rejects the configuration
Validate each DNS directive against the installed OpenVPN version. Use one IP per push line, remove malformed or duplicated directives, and read the service log for the exact line number. The documented version difference involving a second IP means a configuration accepted by an older client or server should not be assumed valid on OpenVPN 2.4 or later.
Windows ignores the pushed value
Compare ipconfig /all before and after reconnecting. If the OpenVPN adapter does not list Pi-hole, apply the address to that adapter manually, then check for competing DNS entries on Wi-Fi, Ethernet, IPv6, or another VPN adapter. Test again after disconnecting other network services.
Security and operational considerations
Expose Pi-hole only to networks that need it. A DNS resolver open to the internet can be abused for reflection or used to consume your upstream service. Restrict firewall access to the VPN client range and trusted local networks, and keep Pi-hole and OpenVPN updated according to their current release guidance.
DNS requests can reveal the domains your VPN clients access. Decide whether logs should be retained, who can view them, and how long they remain on the Pi-hole host. Blocking can also break login pages, payments, video playback, or telemetry that an application treats as mandatory. When a site fails, temporarily identify the blocked hostname in Pi-hole’s query log and allow only the specific domain required rather than disabling the entire blocklist.
Keep a written record of the tunnel address, the Pi-hole listener mode, the OpenVPN configuration file, and any client-side DNS overrides. If the Pi-hole host’s address changes, update the push directive, restart OpenVPN, reconnect clients, and repeat the verification procedure.
Deployment checklist
- Install Pi-hole on an always-available host that the VPN can route to.
- Resolve any port-53 conflict, including a conflict caused by
systemd-resolved. - Run
pihole -a -i localso Pi-hole listens on the interfaces required by the VPN. - Identify the Pi-hole address reachable through the tunnel.
- Remove obsolete OpenVPN DNS push lines.
- Add one
push "dhcp-option DNS <Pi-hole-VPN-address>"line for each intended Pi-hole resolver. - Restart the active OpenVPN service and reconnect clients.
- Verify the Pi-hole address on Windows, Android, Linux, macOS, and any other client type you support.
- Remove or match secondary DNS values and check for application-level encrypted DNS.
- Review Pi-hole logs and test a blocked domain from each important client category.
With those checks complete, OpenVPN clients use Pi-hole for DNS while connected, giving you centralized blocklists without installing a separate ad-blocking application on every device.
