To keep a local web stack off the network, bind each service to loopback instead of a wildcard address. In Apache, replace port-only directives such as Listen 80 with Listen 127.0.0.1:80 and remove conflicting wildcard listeners. In MySQL, set bind_address=127.0.0.1 in the [mysqld] section, then restart the server. If no application needs MySQL TCP/IP at all, skip_networking disables that transport entirely, provided every client can use a Unix socket, named pipe, or shared memory.
After restarting both services, inspect the actual listening sockets—not just whether a local browser or database client works. A local connection can succeed through a socket or loopback while an unintended IPv4 or IPv6 wildcard listener remains available.

What “localhost only” actually restricts
“Localhost only” means the service accepts network connections on the computer’s loopback interface and not on its Ethernet, Wi-Fi, VPN, container, or other externally reachable interfaces. IPv4 loopback is 127.0.0.1; IPv6 loopback is ::1. A service bound to a loopback address can be used by programs on the same machine, but a computer elsewhere cannot establish a connection to that socket.
This is different from a firewall rule. Binding determines which local addresses a process opens. A firewall independently decides whether traffic to a port is permitted, rejected, or silently dropped. Use socket inspection to verify the binding and firewall checks to investigate how a port appears from another machine.

Plan the change before editing
List every port that must remain local. A typical development installation uses Apache on 80 for HTTP and 443 for HTTPS, and MySQL on 3306 for classic TCP connections, although any of these ports may have been changed. Also list whether local programs use IPv4, IPv6, TCP, or a local database transport such as a Unix socket.
Record the current listeners before making changes. This gives you a baseline and helps identify a second Apache or MySQL installation. Run the socket command with sufficient privileges if your operating system hides process names from unprivileged users. Save the active configuration, including included files, so a mistaken edit can be reversed.

“Localhost” is not a guarantee that every client uses the same transport. On Unix systems, a MySQL client using the name localhost commonly selects a Unix socket. A browser requesting http://localhost/ may resolve to IPv6 or IPv4 depending on the resolver and what the server provides. Test the exact address family and protocol that your application uses.
Bind Apache HTTP Server to loopback
How the Listen directive behaves
Apache’s Listen directive controls the addresses and ports on which httpd creates listening sockets. If it contains only a port, Apache listens on that port on every local interface. An address-qualified directive limits the socket to the specified interface.
| Directive | Effect | Use when |
|---|---|---|
Listen 80 |
Port 80 on all interfaces, including addresses assigned to the network | Not appropriate for a localhost-only server |
Listen 0.0.0.0:80 |
Explicit IPv4 wildcard; all IPv4 interfaces | Not appropriate for a localhost-only server |
Listen 127.0.0.1:80 |
IPv4 loopback only | IPv4 local development |
Listen [::1]:80 |
IPv6 loopback only | Local clients that connect through IPv6 |
Apache’s documentation states that a port-only Listen applies to all interfaces, while an address plus port selects one interface. Therefore, adding a loopback line without removing a wildcard line does not achieve the desired restriction.
Change the active Apache configuration
- Locate the configuration file or included fragment that is actually loaded by the running Apache instance. Make the change in the active server configuration rather than in an unused sample file.
- Replace wildcard-only HTTP listeners with an explicit loopback listener:
# IPv4 loopback
Listen 127.0.0.1:80
# Optional IPv6 loopback
Listen [::1]:80
- Remove or comment out every overlapping wildcard declaration for the same service, including
Listen 80andListen 0.0.0.0:80. Check included files as well as the main file. - If local HTTPS is required, apply the same address restriction to the TLS port:
Listen 127.0.0.1:443 https
# Add only when IPv6 loopback is required:
Listen [::1]:443 https
- Keep the ports in
Listenconsistent with the ports used by your virtual-host declarations. A<VirtualHost>block controls request routing after a connection is accepted; it does not create a socket on an address that Apache is not listening on. - Run the configuration check supplied by your operating-system package, then restart or reload Apache through its service manager. A restart is important when changing startup listeners; a reload is sufficient only if the service manager and Apache configuration permit the listener change without a full stop.
Overlapping Apache Listen directives can cause a fatal “Address already in use” startup error. If Apache refuses to start after the edit, inspect all included configuration files for duplicate or overlapping listeners before changing anything else.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIPv4-only or dual-stack loopback?
Choose IPv4-only when every local client is configured for 127.0.0.1. Add Listen [::1]:80 and, where needed, Listen [::1]:443 https when local software resolves the service to IPv6. The two sockets are independent: an IPv4 loopback line does not create an IPv6 listener, and an IPv6 line does not prove that IPv4 is restricted.
Do not leave a wildcard IPv6 directive in place while restricting IPv4. A listener such as an IPv6 wildcard can make the service reachable through non-loopback IPv6 addresses even though 127.0.0.1 looks correct. Inspect the output for both address families after every restart.

Verify Apache’s sockets
On a system with the ss utility, inspect the HTTP and HTTPS ports:
ss -ltnp | grep -E ':(80|443)b'
Alternatively, inspect one port with lsof:
lsof -nP -iTCP:80 -sTCP:LISTEN
For an IPv4-only setup, the result should show 127.0.0.1:80 (and, if configured, 127.0.0.1:443). For dual-stack loopback, it should additionally show [::1]:80 and/or [::1]:443. It should not show 0.0.0.0:80, an external host address, or an unintended wildcard IPv6 listener.
Check the process ID and executable reported by the command. If the process is not the instance whose configuration you edited, stop and identify the service unit, container, chroot, or alternate installation that owns the port. A successful browser request alone cannot distinguish the intended instance from another process.
Bind MySQL to loopback
Choose between a loopback TCP listener and no TCP listener
MySQL’s bind_address startup setting controls the addresses used for TCP/IP connections. Setting it to 127.0.0.1 keeps TCP/IP available to local applications that connect with a host and port, while rejecting remote TCP clients.
skip_networking is stricter: it disables MySQL TCP/IP completely. Use it only when every client can use another supported transport. On Unix-like systems that normally means a Unix socket; on Windows it can mean a named pipe or shared memory when those transports are enabled and the client is configured to use them.
| MySQL setting | TCP/IP behavior | Compatibility consequence |
|---|---|---|
bind_address=127.0.0.1 |
Accepts TCP/IP through IPv4 loopback only; remote TCP connections are refused | Applications using a local host/port connection continue to work |
skip_networking |
No TCP/IP listener | All clients must use a Unix socket, named pipe, or shared memory |
Set bind_address
- Open the MySQL server option file used at startup and edit the
[mysqld]option group. - Add or change the setting:
[mysqld]
bind_address=127.0.0.1
- Remove conflicting duplicate
bind_addressentries from later-loaded option files, or confirm which value the server ultimately uses. - Restart
mysqldthrough the operating system’s service manager.bind_addressis a startup setting, so editing the file without restarting does not move an already-open socket.
The classic MySQL TCP port is 3306 unless the deployment chooses another port. Substitute the configured port in every verification command. A port change does not alter the address restriction; it only changes the number clients must use.
Disable MySQL TCP/IP completely when appropriate
If no local program requires host/port connections, add the following under [mysqld] instead of relying on a TCP bind:
[mysqld]
skip_networking
Before choosing this mode, change each application’s database configuration to use the supported local transport. A program configured with 127.0.0.1:3306 will fail when no TCP listener exists, even though the database server is healthy and a Unix-socket client can connect. Keep a tested administrative client path available before restarting, or you may have no way to manage the server locally.

When a socket, named pipe, or shared-memory transport is used, the client and server must agree on its location or name and the client must be configured to select that transport. A test made with a socket does not validate TCP, and a TCP-only application cannot be made compatible merely by changing the server bind address.
Account for local IPv6 clients
An IPv4 setting of 127.0.0.1 does not automatically create an ::1 listener. If local applications resolve the database host to IPv6, configure an IPv6 loopback address according to the MySQL version and deployment policy, then verify that socket separately. Do not assume that an IPv4-only bind covers both address families.

Inspect the classic port after the restart:
ss -ltnp | grep 3306
Or use:
lsof -nP -iTCP:3306 -sTCP:LISTEN
With bind_address=127.0.0.1, the expected TCP endpoint is 127.0.0.1:3306 (or the chosen port). It should not be 0.0.0.0:3306, an external address, or an unintended wildcard IPv6 endpoint. With skip_networking, no MySQL TCP listening socket should appear.
Test the IPv4 TCP path deliberately:
mysql --host=127.0.0.1 --protocol=TCP -u app_user -p
On Unix systems, mysql --host=localhost commonly selects a Unix socket. A successful localhost login therefore does not prove that the TCP listener is bound correctly. The explicit host and protocol options make the test exercise TCP/IP. If the explicit test fails while a socket login works, check whether skip_networking is enabled, whether the server restarted, and whether the client is using the expected port.
Test from the local computer and from another machine
Local HTTP tests
Request each address family that you intentionally enabled. For example, use a browser or an HTTP client against http://127.0.0.1/; if IPv6 loopback is configured, also test http://[::1]/. Test HTTPS on the corresponding port when TLS is enabled. A successful local response confirms request handling, but the socket listing remains the authoritative check for unintended interfaces.
Use the numeric address during testing rather than relying only on the name localhost. This avoids ambiguity about name resolution and makes it clear whether IPv4 or IPv6 was exercised. If a virtual host depends on a particular host name, preserve that host header while still targeting the loopback address with the client’s host-selection option.
Remote HTTP and MySQL tests
From a different computer on the same network, try the host’s LAN address and the configured service port. A correctly loopback-bound service should not accept that connection. The exact client behavior depends on firewall rules: the remote attempt may time out, be refused, or be reported as blocked. Those outcomes do not replace checking the local listener.
For MySQL, a remote client should not be able to establish a TCP session when bind_address=127.0.0.1. If skip_networking is active, no remote TCP session can succeed because MySQL has no TCP endpoint at all. Test both the IPv4 LAN address and any relevant IPv6 address if the machine has one; checking only one family can miss a separate listener.

Troubleshoot a service that is still reachable
A wildcard directive is still active
Search every Apache include for port-only or wildcard declarations, not just the file you first edited. One remaining Listen 80, Listen 443, Listen 0.0.0.0:80, or wildcard IPv6 listener can expose the service. For MySQL, inspect all option files and startup arguments for a later bind_address value.
The edited configuration was never loaded
Run the package’s configuration check and inspect the running process and sockets. Then restart the correct service instance. If the listener does not change, you may have edited a file belonging to a different installation, container, chroot, or service unit. Confirm the service status and startup logs rather than assuming that a successful command returned by the service manager means the intended process restarted.
Another process owns the port
Use ss -ltnp or lsof to identify the process holding the port. Apache documents that overlapping listeners can prevent startup with an “Address already in use” error; MySQL likewise cannot start when it cannot bind its requested address. Stop or reconfigure the competing instance before judging the new settings. If the old process remains, local tests may continue to pass against it and conceal the failed change.
IPv4 and IPv6 were checked unevenly
Inspect both families. Seeing 127.0.0.1:80 does not rule out a separate wildcard IPv6 listener, and seeing [::1]:80 does not prove IPv4 is restricted. Check each enabled port and address family independently for Apache and MySQL.
A firewall result was mistaken for a binding result
A firewall can make an exposed socket appear unreachable, while a permissive firewall can reveal a non-loopback socket immediately. Confirm the process’s local bind addresses first, then review firewall policy as a second control. Do not treat a timeout alone as evidence that Apache or MySQL is bound only to localhost.
The service failed after the edit
For Apache, revert the last listener change or remove the duplicate declaration, run the syntax check again, and inspect all included files for overlapping addresses. For MySQL, restore the previous startup value if the requested address cannot be bound, then restart and confirm the port owner. A bind failure prevents the server from starting; it is not evidence that the old configuration is still protecting the service.

For Apache, IPv4-only loopback is the smallest change when all local clients use IPv4. Dual-stack loopback adds a second explicitly restricted socket and avoids failures for clients that resolve to ::1. In both cases, wildcard listeners must be removed.
For MySQL, bind_address=127.0.0.1 preserves TCP/IP compatibility for local applications that are configured with a host and port. skip_networking removes the TCP attack surface entirely, but every client, migration tool, backup utility, and administrative command must support a Unix socket, named pipe, or shared memory. Select the stricter option only after identifying all database clients.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Listen 127.0.0.1:80 protect Apache if Listen 80 is still present?
No. The port-only directive listens on every interface. Remove or comment out the wildcard and overlapping directives, including declarations in included files.
Should I add Listen [::1]:80?
Add it when local clients use IPv6 or resolve the service to ::1. Verify the IPv6 socket separately; an IPv4 loopback listener does not create one automatically.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What is the difference between an Apache Listen directive and a <VirtualHost> block?
Listen creates the address and port socket. <VirtualHost> selects how Apache handles requests after a connection reaches a listening socket; it cannot make an unlisted address reachable.
Is bind_address=127.0.0.1 enough to stop remote MySQL connections?
It restricts MySQL TCP/IP to the IPv4 loopback interface, so remote TCP clients are rejected. Confirm that no other option file, startup argument, or separate MySQL instance supplies a different bind address.
When should I use MySQL skip_networking instead?
Use it only when every client can use a Unix socket, named pipe, or shared memory. It removes the TCP listener entirely, so applications configured for 127.0.0.1:3306 will fail.
Why does mysql --host=localhost work when my TCP test fails?
On Unix systems, localhost commonly selects a Unix socket. Test TCP explicitly with mysql --host=127.0.0.1 --protocol=TCP and the configured port.
How can I tell whether a firewall or a bind setting is blocking a remote request?
Inspect local listening sockets first. A loopback-only socket proves the service is not accepting remote connections; the firewall then determines whether a remote probe times out, is refused, or is reported as blocked.
What does an “Address already in use” error mean after changing Apache?
Another listener overlaps the requested address and port, often because a wildcard or duplicate Listen directive remains active. Inspect every included configuration file and identify the process owning the port.
The Bottom Line
Use explicit loopback listeners for Apache and bind_address=127.0.0.1 for MySQL when local applications need TCP. Choose skip_networking only when every MySQL client can use a local non-TCP transport. Restart the correct service, test the exact IPv4 and IPv6 paths your applications use, and verify the socket table so a leftover wildcard listener does not undermine the restriction.
