Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Bedrock servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
To make a player an operator on Minecraft Bedrock, an authorized host or administrator runs /op <player>. On a Bedrock Dedicated Server console, enter op <playername> without the slash. A normal player cannot legitimately promote themselves; the command must be issued from an administrator-controlled world, server console, or permission interface.
Use the correct Bedrock OP command
The direct command is:
/op <player>
Replace <player> with the target player’s exact in-game name. Bedrock’s command reference describes /op as granting operator status to a player. The target can be a player name or a supported target selector, but a specific player name is the safest choice when granting access to one person.
On a Bedrock Dedicated Server, run the console form instead:
op <playername>
The leading slash is normally omitted in the running server console. To remove the privilege later, use:

/deop <player>
In the dedicated-server console, enter deop <playername>.
What operator status allows
Bedrock separates players into permission levels. The relevant levels are visitor, member, and operator. Operator status is the elevated level intended for administration and command use. It is not merely a display label: it determines whether the player can use operator-level commands and other administrative controls available in that world or server.

Granting OP is therefore a trust decision. Anyone you promote may be able to change the world, alter player permissions, or run commands that affect other players. Give the role only to people who need it, and revoke it with /deop when that need ends.

The command is not a self-service setting for ordinary players. It must be issued from an authorized administrator context:
- The world host can grant operator commands through the in-game player-permissions interface.
- An authorized administrator can run
/op <player>in an eligible Bedrock world. - A person with access to the Bedrock Dedicated Server console can enter
op <playername>.
If you are simply a player who joined someone else’s world or server, there is no legitimate command that lets you bypass the owner’s permission system and make yourself OP. Ask the owner or an existing administrator to grant the role instead.

Grant OP from a Bedrock Dedicated Server console
This route applies when you run or administer Microsoft’s Bedrock Dedicated Server software and have access to its live console.
- Start or connect to the dedicated server. Open the server process’s running console, not the in-game chat window. You need administrative access to that console.
- Confirm the player name. Use the player’s exact in-game name, including capitalization where the server identifies it that way. Avoid trailing spaces or copying a name with extra characters.
- Enter the promotion command. Type
op <playername>and submit it. In this console context, do not add the leading slash. - Check the result. Have the player reconnect if necessary, then test a command that requires operator permission or review the server’s current permission state. A successful command response or the player’s ability to use operator commands confirms the grant.
- Record the change. Keep a simple administrator log of who received OP and why. This makes later auditing and removal easier, especially on a server with several staff members.
To revoke the same player’s access, enter deop <playername> in the console. The dedicated-server guide documents op <playername> for granting operator privileges and deop playername for revoking them.

In a local or hosted Bedrock world, the host or an already authorized operator uses the player-permissions interface rather than the dedicated-server console.
- Open the world’s player-permissions controls. The host or authorized operator must perform this step. Menu wording and placement can vary by Bedrock device and release.
- Select the intended player. Choose the player’s account from the active player list, checking the name carefully before changing anything.
- Enable “operator commands.” Turn on the player’s
operator commandspermission. This is the specific permission Microsoft identifies for using commands in chat and accessing command blocks. - Save or close the permissions panel. Return to the world and have the player try an appropriate operator command. If the permission does not appear immediately, have the player leave and rejoin.
- Remove it when appropriate. Reopen the same player-permissions interface and disable the operator permission, or use
/deop <player>from an authorized command context.
A player who is not the host or an authorized operator cannot complete this process for their own account. The permissions panel belongs to the world owner or administrator, not to each individual player.

Understand cheats versus operator permission
Two settings are often confused:
- The
/opcommand itself does not require cheats. Microsoft’s Bedrock command reference lists the command as an administrative operation and says cheats are not required for that command. - Commands in a world may still be unavailable when cheats are disabled. Microsoft’s commands guidance says cheats must be enabled before commands can generally be used in that world, and the
operator commandspermission must also be enabled for a player to use commands in chat and access command blocks.
That distinction explains why a host may be able to assign a permission while the newly promoted player still cannot run ordinary commands: the world’s general cheats setting can block command use separately from the OP grant.
Enabling cheats has a permanent gameplay consequence for that world: Microsoft warns that achievements are disabled when cheats are enabled. Consider that trade-off before changing the setting, particularly in a survival world where achievement progress matters. Do not enable cheats merely because the /op command was rejected; first verify that you are using an authorized context and the correct command syntax.
Set the default permission level for new dedicated-server players
A dedicated server also has a configuration setting named default-player-permission-level in server.properties. Its allowed values are:

This setting controls the starting level for new players; it is not the same as targeting one existing player with /op. Use /op <playername> when you want a specific, immediate promotion. Use default-player-permission-level only when the server’s policy genuinely calls for the same starting level for future newcomers.

Changing a default can have a much wider effect than a single OP command. Before saving the change, check whether your server management process requires a restart or a configuration reload, and verify the result with a test account. The setting’s scope is future defaults, whereas /op and /deop are targeted actions.

Use the dedicated-server /permission command carefully
Bedrock Dedicated Server includes a dedicated-server-only /permission command for permission administration. Microsoft documents these owner-level forms:
/permission list— lists current permissions./permission reload— reloads the permissions file from disk.
This command requires owner-level authority and is primarily for inspecting or reloading the server’s permission data. It does not replace the direct, targeted promotion command: use op <playername> to grant one named player operator privileges, and deop <playername> to remove them.
Choose the right administration route

Troubleshoot a failed OP attempt
The command says you do not have permission
You are probably running the command as a regular player, or your account is not authorized in that server context. Ask the owner or an existing administrator to run the command. Do not try alternate spellings or selector tricks to bypass the permission boundary; OP is intentionally restricted.

The console rejects a command that works in chat
Use the console syntax without the slash: op <playername>. The in-game form includes the slash: /op <player>. Also confirm that you are typing into the live Bedrock Dedicated Server console rather than a hosting dashboard field with its own command format.
The player name is not found
Check the exact in-game name and remove accidental spaces. The target argument identifies the player, so a misspelled name will not grant the intended account. If the player is offline or the server cannot resolve the name, have the player join and then repeat the command using the name shown by the server.
The player is OP but commands still do not work in a local world
Check both conditions: the player must have operator commands enabled, and the world’s cheats setting must permit commands generally. If cheats were enabled, remember that achievements are disabled for that world. Have the player rejoin after changing permissions so the new state is applied cleanly.
The player can play but cannot use commands or command blocks
Being a member does not make someone an operator. Reopen the permissions interface and explicitly enable operator commands. On a dedicated server, confirm that the intended account—not another player with a similar name—was the target of op.
A former administrator still has access
Run /deop <player>, or enter deop <playername> in the dedicated-server console. Then have the player reconnect and test a command. If the account still appears elevated, inspect the server’s permission state with the owner-level permission tools and review any default-level configuration that may be granting broad access to new players.

Operate an OP system safely
- Grant the minimum necessary access. Use a named
/opgrant rather than setting every future player to operator unless that is an intentional server policy. - Verify identity before promotion. Similar names can lead to the wrong account receiving administrative control.
- Keep an administrator record. Note the player, date, reason, and person who approved the change.
- Revoke promptly. Use
/deopwhen a staff role ends, a temporary task is complete, or an account should no longer administer the world. - Protect the server console. Anyone who can issue console commands effectively controls the server’s permissions, so restrict console access to trusted administrators.
- Test with a non-critical command. Confirm that the intended player can use the required operator function without experimenting first on valuable builds or large groups of players.
- Explain the cheats consequence. Before enabling cheats in a local world, tell the owner that achievements will be disabled for that world.

- You are the world host, an authorized operator, or the dedicated-server administrator.
- You have confirmed the exact player name.
- You are using

- For an in-game world, the player’s
operator commandspermission is enabled. - You have considered whether enabling cheats is necessary and accepted its achievement impact.
- You know how to remove access with
/deop.
