To become an AWS Community Builder, build a public record of accurate, useful AWS knowledge sharing and community contribution, then apply when the 2027 application window opens. AWS says it has no single acceptance criterion; technical writing, open-source work, presentations, online help, and community organizing are examples of evidence—not a formula or a guarantee of selection.
What AWS looks for in Community Builder applicants
AWS says applications are generally reviewed for evidence and accuracy of technical content. Its examples include blog posts, open-source contributions, presentations, online knowledge sharing, and organizing AWS Community Days, AWS User Groups, or other community events. AWS also says it seeks builders from all regions and demographics, including underrepresented communities, and accepts a limited number of applicants each year. It does not publish a required number of contributions or a scoring rubric.
In its 2020 announcement, AWS wrote: “While there is no single specific criteria for being accepted into the program, applications will generally be reviewed for evidence and accuracy of technical content, such as blog posts, open source contributions, presentations, online knowledge sharing, and community organization efforts, such as hosting AWS Community Days, AWS User Groups, or other community-based events.” The announcement was co-authored by Channy Yun, Principal Developer Advocate for AWS Cloud. How to prepare a strong application
- Choose an AWS area you genuinely work with. Focus on a service, workflow, or problem you can explain from real practice. Specific, useful lessons are more persuasive evidence of knowledge sharing than broad claims of expertise.
- Publish useful technical work over time. Create clear posts or tutorials, explain a troubleshooting process, contribute to an open-source project, or record a technical talk. Check technical details, identify relevant prerequisites, and make the material understandable to the builders it is meant to help.
- Contribute in community spaces. Answer questions, present at a user group, or help organize an event. Keep track of what you did and whom it served; distinguish your own contribution from the work of a group.
- Collect public evidence in one place. Organize links to your work in a portfolio or document so reviewers can find it easily. AWS’s localized FAQ says publicly visible links are needed for evidence to count; verify the live application’s instructions and fields when applying.
- Explain the value of each contribution. Make it easy to see what you built or taught, who could use it, and what the work demonstrates. This is practical preparation based on AWS’s stated emphasis on useful, accurate content—not a claim about an unpublished scoring system.
- Stay connected to AWS’s official channels. Join AWS Builder Center and follow the program page or waitlist for updates. Builder Center lets builders discover articles, join communities, connect with peers, find events, and access AWS Skill Builder courses. AWS says signing up with an AWS Builder ID does not require a credit card; these platform features are not guaranteed individual membership benefits. See AWS’s Builder Center announcement.
When the 2027 application opens
AWS Developers announced that applications open in January 2027 and encouraged interested builders to join the waitlist for notification. The post does not give an exact opening day or closing deadline. Check the official AWS Community Builders page and waitlist as January approaches, then follow the instructions and eligibility terms shown in the live application.
The available announcement does not establish any 2027 eligibility changes or a current deadline. A localized AWS FAQ says applicants must be at least 18 and enthusiastic about building on AWS, but it is not a current English-language rules page. Do not rely on it as definitive 2027 eligibility guidance; confirm requirements in the application itself.

What members receive—and what is not promised
AWS’s program announcement lists access to product teams and information about new services and features, mentorship from AWS subject-matter experts—including help with content creation, community building, and speaking engagements—and AWS Promotional Credits and other resources for content creation and community work. It does not state a specific credit amount.
A community-authored AWS Builder Center article describes membership as lasting one year and potentially renewable annually. That article was last modified in January 2025, so confirm membership duration, renewal, and expectations in the current application materials rather than treating that guidance as binding terms.

Community Builders and AWS Heroes are different programs
AWS Builder Center describes Community Builders as a program for people sharing AWS knowledge and presents Heroes separately as recognized experts. The available official material does not provide a complete current comparison of their selection processes or requirements. Community Builder membership should not be treated as a guaranteed path to becoming an AWS Hero. See AWS Builder Center’s community directory.
