To become a NASA astronaut, you generally must be a U.S. citizen with a qualifying STEM master’s degree or accepted equivalent, relevant professional experience (or the specified pilot-hour route), and the ability to pass NASA’s long-duration flight physical. NASA also evaluates leadership, teamwork and communication. The process is highly competitive: more than 8,000 people applied in the 2024 cycle, and NASA selected 10 candidates for the class announced on September 22, 2025. NASA currently says it is not collecting applications; the previous vacancy announcement closed April 16, 2024.
The formal eligibility requirements
NASA’s astronaut application is a federal hiring process, not an open-ended program in which anyone can enroll. You must satisfy every formal gate before your leadership, operational background and other strengths can meaningfully improve your chances.
| Requirement | What NASA requires |
|---|---|
| Citizenship | U.S. citizenship |
| Education | A master’s degree in engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science or mathematics from an accredited institution, or an accepted equivalent |
| Professional route | At least three years of related professional experience earned after completing the qualifying degree |
| Pilot route | At least 1,000 hours as pilot in command, including at least 850 hours in high-performance jet aircraft |
| Medical | Successful completion of NASA’s long-duration flight astronaut physical; NASA says medical waivers are not granted |
| Selection qualities | Demonstrated leadership, teamwork and communication |
The education, experience and medical standards are cumulative gates. Strong communication or an impressive résumé cannot substitute for missing citizenship, an unaccepted degree, insufficient qualifying experience or failure to meet the flight physical.

The standard STEM master’s route
The normal academic requirement is a master’s degree from an accredited institution in engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science or mathematics. The degree should support work that NASA can regard as directly relevant to astronaut duties, such as spacecraft systems, planetary science, medicine, robotics, life sciences, software, materials or scientific research.

A bachelor’s degree alone does not meet the standard education requirement. Choose an accredited program and keep documentation of your degree, transcripts and the relationship between your studies and your professional work. A technically impressive job cannot compensate for an education credential outside NASA’s accepted fields or equivalents.
Accepted alternatives to a STEM master’s
NASA identifies several alternatives to completing a conventional master’s degree:
- Two years of related doctoral study.
- A completed Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO).
- Completion of a nationally recognized test-pilot-school program.
These are alternatives to the standard master’s credential, not extra credentials that automatically improve an application. The underlying field and the work you perform still need to be relevant, and you must meet the experience and medical requirements as well.

If you are comparing programs, focus on accreditation, the exact degree awarded and how the curriculum supports your intended technical work. NASA’s vacancy announcement is the controlling document for a particular cycle, so verify the wording and documentation requirements when a new announcement appears rather than assuming an older interpretation still applies.
Which experience route fits you?
Applicants usually qualify through one of two experience patterns. The professional-experience route is broad and can fit engineers, scientists, physicians, software specialists and other technical professionals. The pilot route has a narrower but clearly defined flight-hour threshold.
| Comparison point | Professional-experience route | Pilot route |
|---|---|---|
| Education equivalency | Qualifying STEM master’s degree or an accepted alternative such as two years of related doctoral study, an MD/DO or a nationally recognized test-pilot-school program | The same education requirement or accepted alternative |
| Experience type | At least three years of related professional experience after degree completion | Pilot-in-command experience meeting NASA’s hour thresholds |
| Flight threshold | No flight-hour requirement | At least 1,000 pilot-in-command hours, including at least 850 hours in high-performance jet aircraft |
| Transferable strengths | Technical judgment, research, engineering, medicine, operations, problem-solving and project execution | Aircraft systems management, decision-making under pressure, procedures, crew coordination and risk management |
| Medical qualification | NASA’s long-duration flight physical is required | NASA’s long-duration flight physical is required |
| Personal evidence | Leadership, teamwork and communication must be demonstrated through real work, research, operations, service or other substantial responsibility | |
What counts as useful professional experience?
NASA specifies three years of related professional experience after the qualifying degree, rather than a particular job title. That leaves room for different technical paths, but your application should make the connection clear. Explain the systems, experiments, patients, software, field operations or projects for which you were responsible; the decisions you made; and the measurable result.
Experience is stronger when it shows increasing responsibility, safety awareness, work across disciplines and performance under changing conditions. A list of routine duties is less informative than a concise account of a difficult problem, your role, how you coordinated with others and what improved. Keep dates and records that establish when the work occurred after degree completion.
Do you have to be a military pilot?
No. NASA’s FAQ says flying experience is not required when you use the professional-experience route, and military experience is not mandatory. A civilian engineer, scientist, physician or other technical professional can qualify without military service or pilot training if the education, post-degree experience and medical standards are met.
Pilot experience can demonstrate useful operational skills, but it is not a shortcut around the academic or medical gates. Conversely, a nonpilot applicant should not add flight training merely because it sounds like an astronaut prerequisite; NASA does not require it for the professional route.

NASA’s medical standard
Every applicant who advances must successfully complete NASA’s long-duration flight astronaut physical. NASA states that it does not grant waivers for medical requirements. That makes early awareness important: do not wait until the final stages to discover that a condition, treatment history or physical limitation prevents qualification.
The medical screening is extensive. In the 2025 selection process, NASA’s medical team evaluated 120 initial applicants using medical histories, physical examinations, laboratory testing, eye and hearing examinations, bone-density scans and additional testing. Forty candidates advanced to the second round. Those numbers illustrate the depth of screening for that class; they are not a permanent quota or a promise that future cycles will use the same cutoffs.

Maintain complete medical records and review the current requirements when a vacancy opens. If you have a concern, discuss it with an appropriate physician early, but do not assume a private opinion guarantees NASA qualification. The agency’s stated no-waiver policy means medical eligibility remains a decisive requirement for both the professional and pilot routes.
Leadership, teamwork and communication are selection factors
Meeting the formal requirements only makes you eligible to compete. NASA explicitly looks for people who can lead, cooperate and communicate while solving difficult problems with other specialists.
- Leadership: Show that you have taken responsibility for people, projects, safety, schedules or outcomes, not merely held a title.
- Teamwork: Document how you worked across disciplines, handled disagreement, supported colleagues and contributed to a shared result.
- Communication: Explain technical information clearly to specialists and non-specialists, write accurately and remain effective when circumstances change.
Strong evidence can come from research teams, engineering programs, clinical work, flight operations, field science, emergency response, public service or other demanding environments. NASA is assessing behavior and results, so describe what you were responsible for, what changed because of your work and how the team performed.
These qualities are not a substitute for the degree, experience or physical requirements. They are the evidence that you can function safely in a tightly coordinated crew and contribute to decisions when time, information and resources are limited.

What happens during astronaut-candidate training?
Selected candidates report to Johnson Space Center and complete nearly two years of training before becoming eligible for flight assignments. NASA describes preparation for missions in low Earth orbit, to the Moon and, ultimately, to Mars. The program is deliberately broad: astronauts must understand vehicles, science, operations, health, emergency procedures and the work of an international crew.
Spacecraft systems and operations
Candidates learn how spacecraft are designed and operated, how subsystems interact and how to respond to malfunctions. Training develops the procedural discipline needed to execute a mission plan while adapting when conditions differ from the plan.
Spacewalk preparation
Spacewalk practice takes place in the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory, where underwater conditions provide a way to rehearse movement, tools and procedures in a bulky spacesuit. Candidates learn to work methodically with a partner, communicate continuously and manage limited visibility and mobility.
T-38 jet flight
T-38 flight training develops aviation proficiency, situational awareness, workload management and rapid decision-making. It is part of the candidate curriculum even though applicants do not have to be military pilots or pilots at all before applying.
Robotics and robotic-arm operations
Robotics training covers the control and coordination required to operate robotic systems around spacecraft. Precision, three-dimensional awareness and communication with other crew members are essential when a robotic arm is moving equipment or supporting a vehicle operation.
Geology for lunar missions
NASA includes geology so candidates can recognize, document and sample features that matter to lunar exploration. Training connects scientific objectives with safe field operations and efficient crew decision-making.
Survival training
Survival exercises prepare candidates to protect themselves and their crewmates if a spacecraft lands away from the expected recovery area. They practice emergency priorities, resource management and teamwork under uncomfortable conditions.
Space health and human performance
The curriculum addresses radiation exposure, the effects of microgravity, nutrition and the use of International Space Station exercise equipment. Candidates learn how to monitor health, reduce preventable risks and maintain performance during long missions.

Language and crew skills
Language instruction and additional crew-skills training are assigned as part of the candidate program. The emphasis is not on collecting unrelated qualifications; it is on operating safely and effectively with international partners and a multidisciplinary crew.
Training is therefore neither a short orientation nor a guarantee of a flight. Completing the nearly two-year candidate program makes an astronaut eligible for assignment; mission selection and additional preparation follow according to NASA’s needs.

A practical preparation plan
1. Select an accredited academic path
Choose engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science or mathematics if you are starting your education. Plan toward a qualifying master’s degree or one of NASA’s accepted alternatives. Confirm accreditation and preserve transcripts and degree records.
2. Build substantial post-degree experience
After earning the qualifying degree, pursue at least three years of related professional work unless you are following the pilot-hour route. Favor assignments that require technical judgment, measurable results, safety awareness and cooperation across specialties. Keep a record of dates, responsibilities, outcomes and the people or systems affected by your work.
3. Develop leadership and crew evidence deliberately
Take responsibility for projects, operations, experiments or teams. Seek situations where you must plan, communicate constraints, resolve conflict and deliver under changing conditions. A résumé that lists tasks without outcomes gives selectors less evidence than a concise account of decisions and results.
4. Treat communication as a technical skill
Practice written briefings, oral explanations and concise status reports. Learn to explain uncertainty without hiding it and to listen for information that changes a decision. These habits matter in interviews, mission operations and emergency teamwork.
5. Review medical standards early
NASA does not grant medical waivers, so review the current long-duration flight physical requirements before investing years in a plan. Maintain ordinary health fundamentals, retain accurate medical records and discuss unresolved concerns with an appropriate physician. Passing a routine examination is not the same as satisfying NASA’s flight standard.
