To beat the Pufferfish in How to Fish, trade an endangered fish to the Tourist on the third island for Carrot bait, use the bait to start the encounter, then keep moving and shoot from range. Use trees or other terrain to interrupt its rolling charge, and move away from the purple poison that appears later in the fight. After the boss falls, collect the quest drop and follow the active objective to turn it in.
Get the Carrot bait from the Tourist
- Go to the third island. Mobalytics describes the location as Desert Island. Find the Tourist there and check your quest objective for the current instructions.
- Bring an endangered fish. Trade a catch marked as endangered in the game for Carrot bait. Mobalytics specifically reports that a Seahorse is accepted, but check the in-game endangered label rather than assuming another fish qualifies. See the Mobalytics Puffer Fish Boss Guide.
- Be ready before making the trade. The bait is used to summon the boss. One Mobalytics search-result excerpt says a failed attempt may require another endangered fish to get replacement bait; treat that as a possibility, not a confirmed rule. Bring your best available ranged weapon before trading.
Summon the Pufferfish
Use the Carrot as bait to trigger the encounter. Once the fight begins, prioritize staying mobile rather than trying to stand in one place and trade shots. The PC Gamer guide and How to Fish Wiki guide also describe using the bait to start the fight.
Fight the boss with movement and terrain
Run while attacking
The Pufferfish uses a rolling charge. Keep moving and attack from range; standing still makes it harder to avoid the charge. Try to begin in an area with room to run so you can keep distance while aiming.
Use trees or obstacles to disrupt its charge
Lead the boss toward trees or other terrain so its path is interrupted. Use the pause to attack, then move again before it can line up another charge. Mobalytics, PC Gamer, and the community wiki all support a movement-focused approach, though the sources do not establish exact timing or a guaranteed attack window.

Leave the poison area in the later phase
Mobalytics reports that the boss grows larger and leaves purple poison later in the encounter. Avoid staying in the affected area; reposition while continuing to attack from a safer angle.
Choose a ranged weapon you can use while moving
Bring your strongest available ranged weapon and upgrades if you have them, but no particular loadout is established as mandatory. PC Gamer’s writer says shotgun attempts failed for them and that an upgraded SMG worked. That is one player’s account, not a controlled comparison or a guarantee that the SMG is best for every player.

Collect the drop and follow the quest objective
After defeating the Pufferfish, collect the boss drop before leaving the arena. Mobalytics calls it the Pufferfish Fin and says returning it unlocks the next island’s coordinates; another guide describes delivering the remains. Because the item wording differs between guides, follow the current quest marker and confirm the objective in-game before leaving the area.
