To defeat Sphinx, Devourer of the Unworthy, in Valor Mortis, rest at the Ancient Lair Lantern, parry its blockable claw strings until its 350-point posture breaks, land the critical attack, and maintain burn pressure with Fire Transmutation. In phase two, target the exposed red face with the Blunderbuss, sidestep the insect swarm and mouth beam, and never try to block those attacks. The victory awards 20,000 Catalysts; returning to James also provides the Outward Pass key and the “Not a Cat Person” achievement.
Where to find Sphinx
Sphinx is the third major boss and appears in Chapter IV’s Dark Descent, in the Caverns reached after William’s mine-cart ride through the Salt Mines. You need James’s Cave Grotto Key to open the Caverns route. The Ancient Lair Lantern sits beside the golden-sand barrier outside the arena.
Use the lantern before entering
Rest at the Ancient Lair Lantern, refill healing and ammunition, equip your preferred transmutations, and enter through the golden sand. This checkpoint lets you retry the fight without repeating the cart section.

Recommended preparation
A published build recommendation suggests level 20 or higher, a Saber, Dominatus II and Volatile End ambers, hand grenades, oil grenades, special rounds, and at least five Ferrofluid Flasks. These are recommendations rather than confirmed requirements; the encounter’s core requirement is reliable parry timing and a way to exploit the face in phase two.

How the Sphinx fight works
The encounter has two forms and two health bars. The first form emphasizes rapid claw combinations, tail attacks and ranged energy hazards. When the first bar is depleted, the golden mask breaks, the health bar returns for phase two, and the face becomes a red glowing weak point.
The published guide lists 2,000 health, 350 posture, and 300 fixed critical-attack damage. These figures are reported by AllThingsHow Staff in 2026 and can vary with game conditions or updates.

Phase one: break posture safely
- Stay at close-to-mid range. Keep Sphinx visible and remain near enough to punish its recovery, but do not stand directly in front of telegraphed red-flash attacks.
- Read the three-part claw string. Parry each blockable hit rather than attacking through the sequence. With a Rapier, three perfect parries would total 450 posture damage (150 each), enough to exceed the reported 350-posture pool if all three connect.
- Take the critical attack. When the posture bar breaks, move to the head and perform the critical attack. The guide reports 300 fixed critical damage, so do not waste the stagger by retreating or using a low-value hit.
- Apply Fire between openings. Cast Fire Transmutation while repositioning or after a completed claw string. The researched guide reports no Ignite resistance, making burn a practical source of extra damage.
Attacks that must be dodged
Red flashes mark unblockable attacks. Dodge the leap, breath attack, purple pillar formations and exploding-orb effects instead of attempting to parry them.

- Breath attack: sidestep out of the stream. Remaining in front of Sphinx builds a lethal status bar.
- Purple pillars: move through the gaps as the formation appears.
- Exploding orb: jump over the ground wave, then return to position after the detonation.
- Leap: evade the landing rather than trying to absorb it with a block.
Phase two: expose and punish the face
- Recognize the transition. The golden mask shatters after the first health bar, and the second bar appears. The exposed face glows red and is the priority target.
- Use the Blunderbuss at close range. Fire into the face for burst damage when you have a clear opening. Keep Fire Transmutation active between shots and melee exchanges.
- Switch to ranged pressure when Sphinx retreats. Use a pistol or another ranged weapon loaded with special rounds if the boss creates distance.
- Save explosives for a stationary opening. Hand or oil grenades are most useful late in the fight when Sphinx pauses, rather than during its mobile attack strings.
- Return to the face after every dodge. Do not stay at long range for the entire phase; move laterally through the attack, then close in while the animation ends.
Insect swarm and mouth beam
The phase-two insect swarm and mouth beam are dodge-only threats in the boss-explained guide. Sidestep laterally out of their line and do not attempt to block either attack. Once the effect passes, close the gap and resume face shots.

Common mistakes and fixes
- Blocking red-flash attacks: treat the flash as an unblockable warning and dodge.
- Attacking through the claw combo: wait for the three-hit sequence and parry each blockable strike to build posture faster.
- Ignoring the head after a posture break: immediately perform the critical attack for the reported 300 fixed damage.
- Standing in the breath attack: move sideways before the status meter fills.
- Trying to block phase-two ranged attacks: the swarm and mouth beam require lateral movement.
- Spending bombs too early: reserve them for a stationary late-fight opening.
