Choose your difficulty before you start. SEGA’s manual says the difficulty mode cannot be changed during a playthrough, so the opening selection determines the rules for that save. New players should choose Novice, players familiar with 2D action games should start on Apprentice, and experienced Shinobi or action-platformer players can select Shinobi. Choose Custom when you want to soften one specific variable, and reserve Hardcore for a fresh challenge run because it is available only when beginning a new game.
Boss victories depend less on a universal combo than on reading tells, preserving movement options, selecting the safe range for your sword or kunai, and creating a reliable opening for Shinobi Execution. The guide below explains that process without inventing unverified phase lists for the base-game bosses. It also covers the three bosses and five stages in the SEGA Villains Stage DLC.
What to decide before the first stage
The opening difficulty screen is a commitment for that playthrough. The manual states that you cannot change the mode after starting, so treat the choice as a ruleset decision rather than a temporary setting. If you are unsure, select the most forgiving named preset that still sounds enjoyable; restarting later is possible, but changing the existing save is not.

Difficulty recommendations by experience
| Player profile | Recommended start | Why |
|---|---|---|
| New to 2D action games | Novice | It offers the most forgiving learning curve among the named presets. The manual’s adjustable enemy and recovery variables support this guidance, but SEGA does not publish a numeric ranking for every preset. |
| Comfortable with platform fighters | Apprentice | A balanced first run for players who already understand spacing, jumps, and reaction-based defense. |
| Experienced Shinobi or action-platformer player | Shinobi | The intended challenge for a player who is comfortable learning attack tells and repeating encounters. |
| You want to soften one rule | Custom | Lets you adjust individual combat, recovery, game-over, environmental, and combo-amulet settings instead of moving to a different preset. |
| Replay or maximum challenge | Hardcore | Only selectable for a new game and built around changed damage, healing, enemy placement, and boss attack patterns. |
Can you change difficulty after starting?
No. The mode selected for a playthrough cannot be changed mid-game according to the manual. If a setting is making the entire run unpleasant, the practical solution is to begin a new game with another preset or with a better-targeted Custom configuration.

How the four base modes differ
The base game presents Shinobi, Apprentice, Novice, and Custom. The named presets are intended as complete packages; Custom exposes individual controls so you can change one source of difficulty without changing everything else.
Controls available in Custom
- Enemy damage: how punishing a successful enemy hit is.
- Enemy health: how much punishment enemies can take before being defeated.
- Enemy attack rate: how frequently enemies launch attacks.
- Game-over rules: what conditions end an attempt and how forgiving a failed run is.
- Environmental damage: how much harm hazards and other environmental threats inflict.
- Combo-amulet thresholds: the requirements tied to combo-amulet progression.
The manual lists these controls but does not provide a published numeric table showing every preset’s exact values. Do not assume that Novice, Apprentice, and Shinobi differ on every listed axis, or that a particular setting has a specific percentage change, unless the game displays it in your version.
How to use Custom without losing the intended feel
- Identify the problem that is actually stopping progress. If one hit is ending attempts, enemy damage is the relevant control; if encounters feel too frantic, enemy attack rate is the better target.
- Change only that variable first. Leaving the other rules intact preserves more of the preset’s character than lowering everything at once.
- Keep environmental damage unchanged unless hazards, rather than enemies, are causing most failures.
- Adjust combo-amulet thresholds only when your goal is progression comfort rather than easier combat.
- Start the new game and test the result across ordinary encounters and a boss attempt before making another broad change.
What Hardcore Mode changes
Hardcore Mode arrived in the April 3, 2026 update. It is not simply a higher damage multiplier: the update changes enemy damage, healing, enemy placement, and boss attack patterns. Because it can be selected only when starting a new game, decide on it before creating the run you intend to keep.

Why normal-mode habits can fail on Hardcore
Enemy placement changes the approach you take through a room, while revised boss patterns invalidate reactions learned in another mode. Healing changes also alter how much damage you can reasonably carry between checkpoints. Treat a Hardcore save as a separate learning process: observe each encounter again instead of assuming that a dodge, safe corner, or punish window remains unchanged.
The boss toolkit that works across encounters
The core tools named in the official materials are the sword, kunai, Ninpo, movement options, and Shinobi Execution. The most dependable approach is to assign each tool a job rather than spending everything whenever it is available.
Read the tell before attacking
- Spend the first attempt gathering information. Watch the boss’s animation, sound cue, and position in the arena. Note what happens immediately before a projectile, rush, area attack, or repositioning move.
- Separate the tell from the hit. A visual or audio cue is your warning; the damage window begins only after the dangerous part of the move has passed. Do not attack simply because the animation has started.
- Record the recovery. Most useful punish windows are created by the boss finishing an attack, landing, or returning to a predictable location. The length of that recovery determines whether a quick sword strike, a longer string, or a safer ranged hit is appropriate.
Keep one movement option available
Joe’s dodge, dash, jumps, and other movement tools are central to avoiding contact. Do not spend every movement option to reach a low-value hit. Preserve at least one response for the attack you have not yet seen or for a sudden arena change. Movement is also a positioning tool: staying at the distance where the next tell is easiest to read is often safer than constantly chasing damage.

Choose sword or kunai by risk, not habit
Use the sword when you are already inside a clear close-range punish window. Its value is highest when the boss is committed to recovery and cannot immediately retaliate. Use kunai when distance is safer or when closing in would place you in the path of a follow-up attack. The official materials confirm these tools but do not prescribe one universal boss combo, so let the tell and the arena position determine the choice.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use Ninpo deliberately
Save Ninpo for a dangerous pattern, a guaranteed opening, or a moment when it can prevent more damage than an ordinary attack. Treating it as background damage can leave you without an answer when the boss’s most disruptive move appears. On a first attempt, it is often more valuable to learn which pattern deserves Ninpo than to spend it immediately for a small amount of extra damage.
Build tags for Shinobi Execution
Enemies can be staggered and tagged so Musashi can execute all tagged weakened enemies at once. During a boss encounter, use the same principle on surrounding or supporting enemies when the arena allows it: create tags safely, then trigger Shinobi Execution during a stable opening. Save the execution for a high-value window rather than activating it while you are still exposed to an incoming attack. If a particular boss does not present taggable support enemies, do not force the mechanic; preserve your position and return to the sword, kunai, Ninpo, and movement cycle.

A repeatable boss-learning loop
This procedure turns a failed attempt into specific information instead of a random retry.
- Enter with a simple objective. On the first pull, prioritize identifying the opening cue rather than maximizing damage.
- Watch the arena position. Note whether the boss attacks differently near an edge, above or below you, or after crossing the screen.
- Answer one pattern at a time. Assign a movement response to each observed tell. Keep the response small enough that you can still react if the pattern changes.
- Punish only confirmed recovery. Use the sword at close range, kunai at safer distance, and Ninpo when the pattern justifies it.
- Protect your next attempt. If you are carrying a useful resource or have reached a checkpoint, avoid a low-value trade that can erase the progress.
- Repeat by phase or pattern. Practice the section that caused the failure instead of changing your entire strategy after every hit.
What to do when a strategy stops working
- You are hit while approaching: stop chasing and wait for the next tell; switch to kunai until the approach is safe.
- You run out of movement options: reduce attacks during neutral moments and reserve a dodge, dash, or jump for the next committed strike.
- You take repeated chip damage: identify whether the source is an enemy attack, environmental damage, or a changed Hardcore placement, then address that specific source.
- You miss the punish window: use the next cycle to watch the recovery length and choose a shorter response rather than forcing a long combo.
- You lose to a new Hardcore pattern: discard the normal-mode reaction and observe the updated tell from the beginning.
Checkpoints and practice between attempts
The manual documents autosave at checkpoints and when returning to the world map. Use that structure to practice one section at a time. After a failed boss attempt, identify the last checkpoint that lets you reach the encounter without spending unnecessary resources, then repeat the approach until movement and the first tell are consistent.

SEGA Villains Stage DLC: stages, bosses, and access
The SEGA Villains Stage is a crossover expansion with five stages and three named bosses: Goro Majima, Dr. Eggman, and Death Adder. It unlocks after you complete the fourth base-game zone, whose listed areas include The Desert, Mad Train, and ENE Corp Laboratory.
What the DLC adds
| Content | Included |
|---|---|
| Crossover stages | Five |
| Bosses | Goro Majima, Dr. Eggman, and Death Adder |
| Additional Ninpo | Three |
| Outfits | Three |
| Boss Rush modes | Two |
| Unlock condition | Complete the fourth base-game zone, including The Desert, Mad Train, and ENE Corp Laboratory |
How to approach the crossover bosses
Apply the same tell-first method to all three named encounters. The official product information identifies the bosses and the DLC scope, but it does not publish a complete, phase-by-phase attack guide or a universal combo for them. Start by mapping each boss’s animation and arena position, then decide whether sword, kunai, Ninpo, or movement gives the safest answer. Expect Hardcore to require separate learning because its boss attack patterns are changed.
Using Boss Rush modes effectively
The two Boss Rush modes are useful for repetition because they put the focus on surviving consecutive boss encounters rather than exploring a stage. Enter them after you understand the individual tells, and use each run to test resource discipline: preserve movement for transitions, spend Ninpo only on dangerous patterns, and trigger Shinobi Execution only when the resulting opening is safe. Do not treat a Boss Rush result as proof that the same response works in every difficulty mode, especially Hardcore.

What is known—and not established—about the base-game boss roster
The available official pages do not provide a complete, phase-by-phase list of the base-game bosses. They also do not establish damage values, exact attack sequences, or a definitive “hardest boss” ranking. Any guide claiming a complete roster or universal ranking needs a dedicated, verifiable gameplay source for each entry. Until those details are documented, the reliable advice is the transferable method: read tells, maintain movement, choose range deliberately, spend Ninpo on meaningful threats, and build safe Shinobi Execution opportunities.
Platforms, release date, and context
SHINOBI: Art of Vengeance released on August 29, 2025 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, and Steam. SEGA’s launch announcement reported a Metascore of 90 for 2025. Platform-specific menus and controller layouts can differ, but the difficulty rules described here—especially the inability to change a mode mid-playthrough and Hardcore’s new-game restriction—should be checked against the version and update installed on your system.
Quick Recap
A practical first-run plan
- Select the mode before creating the save. Use Novice for a first 2D action game, Apprentice for a balanced introduction, Shinobi for the intended challenge, or Custom to adjust one clearly identified problem.
- Learn movement before optimizing damage. Practice dodge, dash, and jump timing in ordinary encounters so those options remain available during bosses.
- Use the first boss attempt as reconnaissance. Identify animation and sound tells, arena positions, and recovery windows.
- Match tool to opening. Sword for a confirmed close punish, kunai when distance is safer, and Ninpo for a dangerous pattern or clear high-value window.
- Create execution opportunities. Stagger and tag weakened enemies when safe, then trigger Shinobi Execution at a stable, high-value moment.
- Practice from checkpoints. Autosaves at checkpoints and when returning to the world map let you repeat sections without treating every failure as a full restart.
- Relearn Hardcore separately. If you begin a Hardcore run after mastering another mode, expect changed damage, healing, enemy placement, and boss attacks rather than a simple increase in health.
- Unlock the DLC after the fourth zone. Then approach Goro Majima, Dr. Eggman, Death Adder, the five crossover stages, and the two Boss Rush modes with the same observation-first loop.
