When your best champion is banned or unavailable, choose a backup for the job your team needs—not simply one that looks most like your main. Identify what the fight demands, what your team already covers, and what the opponent is trying to do. Then pick an available champion you can use reliably, and adapt your build and plan around the matchup.
Start with the fight’s needs, not your missing champion
A ban removes one option; it does not decide the fight by itself. The practical question is what your team loses when your preferred champion is unavailable. A main might be valuable because they provide reliable damage, durability, initiation, or a way to answer a particular opponent. Those jobs are more useful starting points than searching for a champion with similar visuals or a similar-feeling ability.
Before you lock in a substitute, describe the fight in one sentence: “We need someone who can ___ because ___.” For example, the blank might be “start fights,” “stay alive long enough to contest,” or “pressure the opposing team’s key plan.” These are strategic prompts, not universal game mechanics; what a role can do varies by game, mode, matchup, and version.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- What must your team accomplish? Decide whether the priority is creating an opening, surviving pressure, dealing dependable damage, or responding to an opponent.
- What is already covered? If another teammate reliably handles a job, your backup may be more valuable filling a gap than duplicating that strength.
- What does the opponent need to succeed? Look for a way to interfere with that plan without abandoning your team’s own needs.
- What can you execute consistently? A theoretically ideal choice is less useful if you do not know how to play it under pressure.
Do this diagnosis before comparing individual champions. It keeps a ban from turning into a rushed search for a supposedly identical replacement.

Choose by role and fit, not resemblance
Riot Games’ official Choosing the Right Champion guidance for League of Legends organizes choices around champion roles and strengths. That is a useful example of a broader selection principle: begin with the contribution you need, then consider which available character can provide it. League of Legends is only an example here; the game in the title is not specified, so no particular champion or game-specific mechanic can be responsibly recommended.
A backup does not have to reproduce every strength of your main. It needs to contribute to the encounter in a way your team can use. A similar character may feel familiar but leave an important team need unmet. Conversely, a less similar character could be a better choice if their role suits the fight and you can play them reliably.

- Role coverage: Can this champion provide the kind of contribution the encounter requires?
- Team fit: Does the choice complement what teammates already bring, or is it duplicating a job while leaving a gap?
- Matchup response: Can the champion help address the opponent’s plan in this particular fight?
- Player reliability: Do you know the champion well enough to make useful decisions when the fight becomes difficult?
- Plan flexibility: Can you and your team adjust your approach to make the pick useful, rather than expecting it to perform exactly like your main?
These are decision criteria, not a universal ranking. Without knowing the game, mode, matchup, and relevant version, there is no sound basis for naming one substitute as best.
Check the team composition before committing
A good backup is not selected in isolation. Look at the team as a whole and ask what the other picks can already do. If your preferred champion normally provides one important function, check whether someone else can cover it. If not, favor a substitute that helps preserve that function. If it is already covered, consider whether your team would benefit more from a different contribution.
This is a trade-off, not a rule to avoid overlapping roles. A team may have a reason to emphasize a strength, but that should be a deliberate plan rather than an accidental result of everyone choosing independently. Likewise, filling a perceived gap is not automatically worthwhile if you cannot play the chosen character competently or if the pick does not help with the matchup.

Riot Games’ /dev: Balancing for Pro Play discusses professional draft strategy, counters to dominant strategies, and the value of having multiple strategic options. Its context is professional play and balance, so it should not be treated as a current universal recipe for ordinary matches. The practical takeaway is narrower: consider both what your own composition can do and what the opponent’s plan depends on. A backup can be valuable when it contributes to your team while making that opposing plan harder to carry out.
Use a simple selection process
- Name the job. Write down the most important function your unavailable champion would have served in this fight. If several functions mattered, identify the one your team cannot afford to lose.
- Review the rest of the team. Note which needs teammates already cover and which remain uncertain or unfilled.
- Identify the opposing plan. Ask what the opponent appears to need in order to make their strategy work. Do not assume you can counter everything; focus on a response that is relevant to the encounter.
- Shortlist available backups. Consider champions that can perform the needed job and that you can play with reasonable confidence. Do not require an exact copy of your main.
- Compare fit and reliability. Weigh role coverage, matchup response, team composition, your familiarity, and whether your team can make a coherent plan around the pick.
- Commit to an adjusted plan. Decide how the substitute is meant to contribute. If the pick changes what the team can do, change the approach with it rather than trying to follow a plan built for the banned champion.
If two choices look plausible, prefer the one with the clearest job and the most dependable execution for you. That is a practical judgment, not a claim that familiarity always outweighs matchup or team composition. A severe team need or a specific opponent plan may justify choosing a less familiar option, but only if you understand how it is supposed to help.
Adapt the build and the team plan
Changing champions while keeping every other decision unchanged can leave the substitute poorly supported. Revisit both your build and the way your team intends to approach the fight. Riot’s League of Legends support guidance describes recommended builds as templates and encourages experimentation to find a build that fits the player and team. Treat that as permission to adapt, not proof that any particular adjustment will work in every situation.

Make changes for a reason you can state. Ask whether the planned build and approach support the chosen champion’s role in this matchup. If your backup is supposed to solve a different problem from your main, using the same setup and expecting the same contribution may not make sense. On the other hand, do not make changes just to make the pick feel different: an adjustment should support the job you chose the champion to do.
- Keep the team’s objective in view when choosing a build; do not optimize for a role your team does not need from you.
- Consider the encounter and the opposing plan rather than treating a recommended build as a rule that fits every situation.
- Coordinate with teammates when the substitute changes how the team can approach the fight.
- Use experimentation thoughtfully. A build that suits one player, team, or matchup is not automatically suitable for another.
The available guidance does not establish a specific build, item, statistic, or adjustment for this unspecified game and fight. Avoid copying a supposed counter-build without confirming that it applies to your game, mode, version, and matchup.

Prepare backups before a high-pressure match
Finding out that your main is unavailable is a difficult time to learn an unfamiliar character. Practice a small set of role-appropriate backups before you need them. The goal is not to master every possible pick; it is to have more than one usable way to contribute when a ban, availability issue, or team need rules out your first choice.
Best Value
- Multi-Platform PC Gaming Controller: Working with Switch, PC, Android, and iOS devices via Bluetooth, wired, and wireless dongle connections.
- Hall Effect Joysticks: Delivering enhanced recentering performance for smoother control and superior anti-drift capability. Plus, with anti-friction rings.
- 2-Way Trigger Lock: With trigger stops, gamers can toggle between short and long pull positions. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT (triggers must be in the long pull position).
- 1000Hz Polling Rate: This ensures that your inputs are registered almost instantaneously, minimizing lag and maximizing your performance during competitive play.
- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
Choose backups that cover meaningful alternatives rather than collecting characters at random. Think about the roles your main serves and what your team may need when that role is unavailable. Practice enough to understand the backup’s intended contribution and how your approach differs from your main. The right size of a backup pool depends on the game, role, and time you can devote; the available evidence does not support a universal number.
After playing a backup, review a few questions: Did you understand your job? Did the team have a workable plan around the pick? Did the opponent’s strategy change what you needed to do? What would you adjust next time? This kind of review helps turn an emergency substitute into a deliberate option without assuming that one result proves the pick is strong or weak.
Common mistakes when a main is banned
- Picking only for similarity. Familiarity can help, but resemblance does not guarantee that a substitute fills the team’s missing role or answers the encounter.
- Ignoring the rest of the composition. A choice that looks strong alone may duplicate an existing contribution while leaving a more important team need unaddressed.
- Trying to counter the opponent at any cost. A response to the opponent’s plan still needs to contribute to your own team’s plan.
- Assuming a recommended build is mandatory. Riot’s League guidance presents recommended builds as a starting template, not a guarantee that the same setup fits every team and situation.
- Choosing a backup you cannot execute. Theoretical fit matters less if you cannot make the decisions needed to realize it. Practice options before a high-pressure fight.
- Expecting the team to play as if your main were still available. When the substitute changes your contribution, the team’s approach may need to change too.
What cannot be answered without the game and matchup
A specific champion recommendation depends on details not given in the title: the game, mode, available roster, opponent picks, team composition, and relevant version or patch. Those details can change which choices are available and what a matchup demands. The general selection process above can help organize the decision, but it is not a tier list, matchup guide, or promise of a win.

There is also no verified statistic here showing how much choosing a backup improves success in difficult fights. Riot’s discussion of professional pick-and-ban presence and champion diversity concerns professional balance; those figures should not be repurposed as evidence that a particular backup strategy improves an individual match’s outcome.
