Use the player’s SteamID64 for a durable Rust server ban or unban. Run the command from the in-game F1 console, RCON, or your host’s web console with an account that has admin rights. Display-name bans are limited to connected players, while unban always requires the SteamID64. Because community guides show different argument orders and command aliases, check your server’s own help output before applying a command.
Rust ban and unban commands at a glance
The table below separates the stable parts of the process from syntax that can vary between server builds and administration tools. Replace <SteamID64> with the player’s numeric Steam identifier. Keep quotation marks around text such as a reason when the command help for your server shows quoted arguments.

Some installations accept the same commands with a global. prefix, such as global.banid. The prefix is optional on systems where the shorthand is enabled; the command help on your server is authoritative.
What you need before changing a ban
- Administrative permission. Ban commands are restricted to accounts with server authority. A normal player will receive a permission error or no useful result.
- A console connection. You can work in the in-game F1 console, through RCON, or in a hosting panel’s web console. RCON and a web console let you administer the server without joining the game.
- The correct identifier. A SteamID64 is the durable key for a ban. A display name is only a temporary lookup key while its owner is connected.
- A clear reason. Recording a concise reason makes later review easier and gives other administrators context. Do not put unescaped command separators or extra arguments in a reason.
- A backup plan. Ban data is written to the server configuration area, but a crash before the server saves its state can discard a recent change. Arrange access to the server identity folder and a safe copy of the ban file.
Find and verify a player’s SteamID64
Use a SteamID64 rather than a display name whenever you need a ban that survives a rename or an offline player. If the player is connected, use the player list, RCON output, moderation panel, or other administrative view provided by your server setup to read the identifier associated with that live connection. If you are preparing an offline ban, obtain the SteamID64 from a trustworthy server record or the player’s Steam profile and compare it with any identifier previously recorded by your staff.

Before submitting a command, check that the value is the Steam identifier and not a username, a short in-game name, or another account number exposed by a plug-in. Keep the value unchanged when copying it. If two records appear to conflict, do not guess: inspect the server’s player or connection data again and postpone the ban until the identity is certain.
Ban a connected player by SteamID64
Run the command in F1, RCON, or a web console
- Open the console you administer through: press F1 in the game, connect with an RCON client, or open the console page supplied by your host.
- Confirm that the account running the command has an owner or moderator-level authorization accepted by your server.
- Enter the syntax shown by
help banid. The most widely reported form isbanid <SteamID64> "<reason>". For example, the structure is the ID followed by one quoted reason, not a player’s display name in place of the ID. - Submit the command and watch the console response. A successful response should identify the affected SteamID or confirm that the player was banned and disconnected.
- Run
banlistexto verify that the ID appears in the current ban list. If your server does not recognize that command, runhelpand use the ban-list command it reports.
The player normally loses the connection as the ban takes effect. A ban made by SteamID64 can also target an offline account when the server accepts the ID, so you do not have to wait for the person to reconnect.

Community administration guides do not agree on whether every Rust build expects only an ID and reason or expects an additional username field. One commonly documented pattern is banid <SteamID64> "<reason>"; another is an ID followed by a name and then a reason. Do not blindly append fields from a different guide. Enter help banid on the server you actually operate and copy its displayed order. If the help output is unavailable, test syntax with a controlled administrative account rather than experimenting on a real player.

Use the optional global. prefix only when needed
Some consoles list commands with a namespace prefix, for example global.banid. Other servers accept banid directly. These forms generally refer to the same server command, but an unrecognized prefix will produce an error. The command list returned by help tells you which spelling your installation accepts.
Ban by display name while the player is online
A name-based ban is useful when a connected player is visible in the server and you need to act immediately, but it is less reliable than a SteamID ban. The server can resolve the display name to a SteamID only from the live connection. Once the player leaves, the same name may match nobody, and a player can change the name later.
- Confirm that the intended player is currently connected and note the exact spelling and capitalization shown by the server.
- Run
help banto display the name-ban syntax for your build. Enter the name exactly as the help output requires, enclosing it in quotes if it contains spaces, followed by the reason field when supported. - Submit the command while the player remains online. If the server reports that no matching player exists, check spelling and reconnect status rather than repeating the command with a different identity.
- Immediately inspect
banlistex. Verify that the resulting record contains the intended SteamID64, not merely a similar display name.
If you need to ban the person after they disconnect, stop using the name form and obtain the SteamID64 from your records. The name itself is not a durable unban key.

Ban an offline player by SteamID64
Offline administration requires the SteamID64 because there is no active connection from which the server can resolve a display name. Open RCON or the web console, run the server’s accepted banid syntax, and then check the list with banlistex. If the ID does not appear, inspect the error text and the command help before trying again; do not substitute a username simply because the account is offline.
When staff hand off an offline-ban request, record the ID, the evidence or incident reference, the administrator who approved the action, and the reason entered in the command. This documentation is separate from the server’s ban file and helps resolve disputes if a name later changes.
Check the active ban list and saved data
Read bans from the console
Run banlistex after a ban or unban. Community guides describe its output as a list of banned users, including names and reasons where those fields were supplied. The command is useful for confirming that the SteamID64 was accepted and for finding the ID needed when an administrator asks for an unban.

Inspect the ban file
Bans are also written under the server’s configuration area. One commonly cited location is a bans.cfg file inside the server identity folder, but directory names differ by installation and hosting panel. Use your panel’s file browser or the server’s documented identity path rather than assuming every host uses the same folder. Keep a dated backup before making manual edits, and avoid editing the file while the server is actively rewriting it.

A ban can be visible in the running process yet be lost if the server crashes before it writes the latest state. A clean shutdown or the save procedure provided by your server setup reduces that risk. Keep a copy of the ban data after important moderation actions, especially on a server that has experienced crashes or forced restarts.
Unban a player correctly
Use the SteamID64, never only the username
- Locate the exact SteamID64 in
banlistex, the saved ban record, or your moderation notes. - Open F1, RCON, or the web console with an account that still has administrative rights.
- Enter
unban <SteamID64>. Guides generally show the ID without quotation marks; follow the syntax returned byhelp unbanon your server. - Submit the command and run
banlistexagain. The record should no longer be listed as an active ban. - Ask the player to reconnect only after the list confirms removal. If the player still cannot join, check for another ban record, a plug-in restriction, or a separate server instance receiving the connection.
An unban command shown as banid in some third-party instructions is a documented error, not a second unban method. Use the command your server identifies as unban.

What happens to administrative privileges
If the banned account was an administrator or moderator, banning it removes its authorization immediately. Removing the ban does not automatically restore that privilege. An authorized owner must grant it again with the appropriate command, then save the rights configuration and have the account reconnect if required by the server.

Run help ownerid, help moderatorid, and help server.writecfg first because names, quoting, and available permission levels can vary. A reconnect is often needed before a newly granted account can use its rights. Accounts with an authorization level above zero are generally treated as administrators; community summaries commonly associate moderator level 1 with moderation actions such as kicking, banning, muting, and teleporting, while owner-level access also exposes broader server controls. Treat those level descriptions as configuration guidance and verify the permissions on your own build.
Troubleshoot failed bans and unbans

A reliable moderation procedure
- Confirm the target. Match the player, incident, and SteamID64 before taking action. A similar display name is not sufficient.
- Choose the identifier. Use SteamID64 for offline or lasting action; use a name only for an online player when you can immediately verify the resulting ID.
- Check local syntax. Run the relevant
helpcommand so argument order and aliases come from the server itself. - Apply the action. Submit the ban or unban from F1, RCON, or the web console with an authorized account.
- Verify state. Inspect
banlistexand read the console response rather than assuming a command succeeded. - Protect the record. Preserve the reason in your moderation log and back up the ban data after significant changes.
- Recheck access. For an unban, confirm the ID disappeared and ask the player to reconnect. For a banned administrator, restore permissions separately only after the ban is removed.
Which method should you use?

The dependable rule is simple: identify the account by SteamID64, confirm the command syntax with the server’s own help system, verify the result in the ban list, and preserve the saved ban data.
