To remove someone from a V Rising server, authenticate as an administrator first, then run the moderation command in the server console. Use kick <character name | IP | user ID> for a session-only removal, bancharacter <character name> to block one character, or banuser <SteamID64> to block the player’s account. View existing bans with banned.
The command used to undo a ban is the awkward part: older instructions use a SteamID64, while newer instructions use the numbered entry returned by banned. Check your server build’s help output before running unban. Bans are stored in banlist.txt, but its directory depends on the hosting setup.
What you need before using any moderation command
V Rising does not treat every connected player as an administrator. A command can be syntactically correct and still fail if the account has not been authorized. Complete the administrator setup before trying to kick or ban anyone.
Add your Steam account to the server’s administrator list
Add the SteamID for the account that will issue commands to the server’s admin list. The exact file location and control-panel label vary by dedicated-server installation, so use the administrator instructions for your build or host. This step grants eligibility; it does not by itself turn an already-connected client into an authenticated administrator.

Connect a client and run adminauth
Join the world with the account you added, open the server console available to administrators, and run:
adminauth
Official Stunlock instructions for the 0.5.x line describe this admin-list-then-adminauth flow. Guides covering player moderation also say that kicks, bans, teleports and item-spawn commands require a client connected to the world with adminauth active. If you only changed the admin list, reconnect and authenticate again rather than assuming the permission is live.

Use the right console
Do not assume that a command available in the game server console is available through RCON. Stunlock’s 1.0.x RCON instructions show a short table containing help, announce, announcerestart and shutdown; they do not establish the moderation commands as RCON commands. Run player moderation in the authenticated server-console session unless your build’s own help output explicitly lists the command for your interface.
Identify the player before taking action
- For a temporary disruption, confirm the character name, IP address or user ID shown by your server tools.
- For an account ban, obtain the player’s SteamID64 rather than relying on a display name.
- Record the reason and time in your moderation log. Character names can change or be reused, while an account identifier is intended to identify the Steam account.
Kick a player without banning them
A kick removes a player from the current session. It is not a ban: the player can connect again immediately unless another rule or network restriction prevents it.
Command
After adminauth, run:
kick <character name | IP | user ID>
Replace the placeholder with the identifier accepted by your console. The command syntax documented in current server guides allows a character name, an IP address or a user ID. Use the least ambiguous identifier available; if two connected characters have similar names, an IP or user ID avoids removing the wrong person.

When a kick is appropriate
- Immediate disruption: remove a player who is exploiting a live session, harassing others or ignoring a warning.
- Connection reset: clear a stuck or desynchronized session without imposing a lasting penalty.
- Investigation: separate a player from the world while you verify logs or speak with other players.
A kick does not create an entry in the ban list. If the same player returns and the underlying violation warrants a lasting restriction, use a character or account ban after confirming the correct identity.
Ban one character or the entire account
V Rising exposes two different permanent-ban targets. Choose deliberately: a character ban and an account ban have different reach.

Ban a character
Run:
bancharacter <character name>
This blocks that character from connecting. Because the command is name-based, check spelling and capitalization as displayed by your server and avoid acting on a guessed name. If the player has multiple characters or can create another character on the same account, a character ban may not solve an account-level problem.
Ban an account with its SteamID64
Run:
banuser <SteamID64>
The account form is the better fit for repeat abuse, ban evasion or conduct that should not be bypassed by changing characters. A guide covering the command says it works whether or not the player is currently online. If your server rejects an offline target, connect as an administrator, confirm the identifier and inspect the console’s help output for your build.
Choosing between the two
- Use
bancharacterwhen the sanction is intentionally limited to a specific character and you have no reason to restrict the entire Steam account. - Use
banuserwhen the person, not merely one character, is the subject of the sanction. - Do not substitute a display name for a SteamID64. Names are not account identifiers and can produce the wrong target.
Both commands are listed alongside banned, unban and kick in Stunlock’s 0.5.x dedicated-server instructions. Exact behavior can still differ in later builds, so verify an unfamiliar response with help.

List current bans with banned
Run:
banned
The command displays the server’s current ban entries. One guide says each entry includes an index number. Save the complete output before changing anything: the index is especially important if your build’s unban command expects a number rather than a SteamID64.
How to read the result
- Match the displayed SteamID64 or character information to your moderation record.
- Note the entry’s current index, not an index from an older screenshot or log.
- Re-run
bannedafter adding or removing a ban. A newer guide reports that indices shift whenever a ban is added or removed.
If the command returns an empty list, the server currently has no entries in the ban list, even if a previous kick was issued. A kick alone does not appear as a ban.
Unban a player safely
The unban syntax is not consistent across published V Rising instructions. Older guides show:
unban <Steam64ID>
A more recent guide says unban takes the numbered index shown by banned, and warns that the index changes whenever entries are added or removed. Neither interpretation should be assumed universally for every server build.

Recommended console workflow
- Authenticate with
adminauthin the server console. - Run
bannedand copy the current output. - Run
helpand inspect the syntax your build reports forunban. - If the help text specifies an index, use the current index from
banned, not a remembered number. - If it specifies a SteamID64, use the exact account identifier shown in your ban record.
- Run
bannedagain and verify that the intended entry disappeared.
Do not guess between the two forms. A wrong index can remove a different person’s ban, while a SteamID64 supplied to an index-based build may simply fail. If the console gives no useful syntax, use the file-based method below only after making a backup and following your host’s maintenance procedure.

Find and edit banlist.txt
V Rising stores bans in a file named banlist.txt, with one SteamID per line. Console bans update the file automatically. The directory is not universal because hosting panels and self-hosted installations arrange server settings differently.

These are examples of real layouts, not a promise that every provider uses the same path. Search the server’s settings directory or use the panel’s file manager if your installation differs.
Manual removal procedure
- Stop the server using its normal shutdown control. Do not edit a file while the server is actively rewriting it.
- Copy
banlist.txtto a safe backup location and note the current date. - Open the file as plain text and identify the exact SteamID line to remove.
- Remove only that line; leave the other entries unchanged.
- Save the file, start the server and run
bannedafter authenticating. - Confirm that the intended account is no longer listed before telling the player to reconnect.
Removing a line is described as one manual unban route, but the console method is preferable when your build supports it because it lets the server update its own state. If the entry returns after a restart, stop editing and check for a second settings directory or a hosting panel that restores configuration from a template.
Temporary-ban commands: treat them as unverified
One third-party guide lists bancharactertemp and banusertemp and attributes them to a “1.1 October patch.” That claim has not been verified against Stunlock release notes or a current official command reference. Do not use these commands as if they were guaranteed features.
If your own server console’s help output explicitly lists one of them, read the displayed argument format and test it with a disposable account before relying on it for moderation. If the command is absent or returns an unknown-command error, use a normal kick or permanent ban according to your policy and track the expiry time outside the game.

Troubleshooting failed moderation commands
The console says you are not an administrator
- Confirm that the Steam account currently connected is the one on the admin list.
- Reconnect to the world after changing the list.
- Run
adminauthagain in the server console. - Make sure you are using the server console rather than an RCON interface that does not expose moderation commands.
The command is unknown
Run help and compare the command names and argument order with the output for your build. The official material available for 0.5.x and 1.0.x is not a complete, current command reference for every later release. A command shown in an old guide may have changed, moved interfaces or been removed.
kick removes the wrong person or nobody
Use the identifier format your console accepts and copy it exactly. A character-name match can be ambiguous; an IP or user ID may be safer when those values are available. Check the console response and ask the player to reconnect only after confirming that the session ended.
A character ban does not stop the player returning
Check whether the player connected with a different character. bancharacter targets a character, not necessarily every character on the account. For an account-wide restriction, identify the SteamID64 and use banuser if your build lists it.
An account ban appears ineffective
Verify the SteamID64, run banned, and check that the entry is present. If the player was online when the ban was issued, remove the existing session with kick; a ban controls subsequent connections, while a kick controls the current session. If the command was issued through RCON, repeat it in the authenticated server console because the official RCON table is limited.
unban reports an invalid argument
Run banned, then help. Your build may require the current list index rather than a SteamID64, or the reverse. Remember that indices can shift after any addition or removal. If no syntax is exposed, use the backed-up banlist.txt workflow and verify the result with banned.
The ban returns after editing the file
The server may be reading a different settings directory, or the panel may be restoring a managed copy. Compare the path you edited with the active server installation, stop the server before changes and ask the host which file is authoritative.

Version and interface limitations
Stunlock’s dedicated-server instructions available for the 0.5.x and 1.0.x versions list the core commands discussed here, but a complete, current official command reference for every live build was not available. Third-party hosting guides also differ on unban arguments and on whether newer temporary-ban commands exist. Treat the command names as a starting point, then let your server’s own help output determine the exact syntax.
The reliable operational sequence is consistent: authorize the administrator, authenticate with adminauth, use kick, bancharacter or banuser for the intended scope, inspect bans with banned, and verify any unban rather than assuming it succeeded. Keep a backup of banlist.txt before manual edits, because the file is the durable record that survives a restart.
