Use an administrator chat or RCON command for routine moderation: /ban <Username/AGID> <duration> <banreason> <userbanreason>. Use /unban with a player name, IP address, or AGID to remove a ban. If you edit the server’s ban file manually, save it in the Saved folder and run /reloadbans so the change takes effect immediately.
What you need before changing a ban
Ban commands are restricted to staff accounts with the server’s ban permission. The Path of Titans Hosting Wiki warns that these permissions should be given only to trusted users because the server owner is responsible for misuse. Confirm the account, role, and permission before attempting any command; a correctly formatted command still fails when the executing account is not authorized.

You can target a player by Alderon Games username or by AGID. Usernames are convenient when there is only one clear match, but an AGID is the safer choice when names are similar, duplicated, recently changed, or difficult to distinguish in chat. Verify the identifier against the player currently connected to your server before applying a long-term or permanent action.
Choose the method that fits the job
In-game administrator chat and RCON are the recommended routine paths because they write the ban to bans.txt for you. Direct editing is useful when you must prepare several entries while the server is offline or apply a controlled batch change. Spectator Mode offers a quick player-by-player control, but its ban action is permanent according to the hosting documentation.

Ban a player with in-game chat or RCON
The hosting documentation recommends adding bans with RCON or in-game chat. Open the server’s text chat as an administrator, or connect through RCON, and enter the command in this form:
/ban <Username/AGID> <duration> <banreason> <userbanreason>Replace every angle-bracketed value with the actual player identifier and text. The command requires the ban permission.

Set the duration
Durations use a number followed by a unit. The documented units are seconds (s), minutes (m), hours (h), and days (d).

Use the unit immediately after the number, with no space. Choose the smallest duration that matches your server rule so an accidental permanent action is less likely. A temporary duration is supplied as part of the command; a permanent ban is represented in the file format by a zero timestamp, described below.

Provide both reasons
The command accepts an administrator-facing reason and a player-facing reason. Keep them separate: the first records why staff took the action, while the second is the explanation shown to the banned player. If either reason contains spaces, enclose that complete reason in quotation marks so the words remain one argument. Use concise, factual wording rather than including private staff notes in the player-facing text.
Example command
A temporary ban can look like this:
/ban ExamplePlayer 24h "Repeated combat logging" "24-hour ban for repeated combat logging"When a username is ambiguous, substitute the player’s AGID instead:
/ban AGID_VALUE 7d " evasion of prior warning" "Seven-day ban for rule evasion"The second example shows the same argument structure; replace AGID_VALUE with the actual AGID and remove any accidental leading space from a reason before sending it.
Check the result
- Confirm that the staff account has the
banpermission. - Verify the username or AGID against the intended player.
- Check the duration suffix (
s,m,h, ord). - Review both quoted reasons for spelling and audience.
- Send the command once and observe the server response or player removal.
Using chat or RCON avoids manually calculating a Unix timestamp and automatically adds the entry to bans.txt, which is why the hosting documentation identifies this as the lower-error routine path.

Unban a player
Use the form that matches the identifier stored for the ban:
/unban <playername>/unban <IPAddress>/unban <AGID>
Only one identifier is supplied per command. Replace the placeholder with the player name, IP address, or AGID and submit it through administrator chat or RCON. Prefer the AGID when a name is not unique; use the IP form only when you have confirmed that the address belongs to the ban you intend to remove.
When an unban appears not to work
First check that you used the same identifier type recorded by the ban. A name that has changed may not match a name-based entry, while an AGID remains the more reliable identity reference. Confirm the spelling, capitalization, and absence of extra spaces. If the ban list was changed in a text editor rather than through the command, reload it with /reloadbans as described in the next section.
Edit bans.txt directly
Manual editing gives you control when the server is offline or when several entries must be prepared together, but it has more opportunities for syntax errors. The file belongs in the server’s Saved folder. Use one ban entry per line and preserve this exact field order:

AGID:UnixTimestamp:AdminReason:UserReasonUnderstand each field
- AGID: the banned player’s Alderon Games identifier.
- UnixTimestamp: the time at which a temporary ban ends, expressed as a Unix timestamp.
- AdminReason: the internal or administrator-facing explanation.
- UserReason: the explanation shown to the banned player.
Separate fields with colons and place each ban on its own line. Keep the two reason fields distinct; putting staff notes into UserReason exposes them to the player.
Temporary versus permanent entries
A future Unix timestamp creates a temporary ban. The value 0 represents a permanent ban. Because a timestamp is easy to mistype, calculate or copy it carefully and verify that it is in the future before saving. Do not replace a temporary timestamp with 0 unless a permanent action has been explicitly approved.
Example file entries
The following illustrates the required layout; replace the sample identifier, timestamp, and reasons with your own values:

9876543210:0:Severe rule violation:Permanent ban for severe rule violationThe first line uses a future timestamp for a temporary ban. The second uses 0 for a permanent ban. Do not add bullets, quotation marks, commas, or extra columns to the file format.

Apply a manual change immediately
- Stop or otherwise protect the file from simultaneous edits according to your hosting setup.
- Open
bans.txtin the server’sSavedfolder. - Add, remove, or correct exactly one colon-separated entry per line.
- Save the file without changing the field order.
- In administrator chat or RCON, run
/reloadbans. - Test the intended result with the affected identifier, while avoiding an unnecessary test ban on a real player.
The documentation says the ban file otherwise hot-reloads about once a minute. Use /reloadbans when the change must be recognized immediately instead of waiting for that interval.
Ban from Spectator Mode
While in Spectator Mode, locate the player in the player list, select Ban beside the player’s name, and enter an optional reason. The hosting documentation states that bans made through this method are permanent. Treat the control as a final action: verify the selected name before confirming, and use the chat or RCON method instead when you need a timed ban.
Reasons to use chat, file editing, or Spectator Mode
Use chat or RCON for ordinary moderation
This path combines the lowest manual formatting burden with explicit duration control. It is suited to a single connected player because the command can identify the player immediately and writes the resulting entry to bans.txt automatically.
Use the file for planned or offline changes
Direct editing is appropriate when staff need to prepare several entries without joining the game, or when a controlled batch update is part of server maintenance. The trade-off is that every AGID, timestamp, colon, and reason must be correct. Always reload after saving when timing matters.
Use Spectator Mode only when permanence is intended
The player-list control is convenient during live observation, but it does not provide the temporary-duration workflow available in the chat command. Select it only after confirming that a permanent ban is the desired outcome.
Troubleshoot a failed ban or unban
The command is rejected or has no effect
- Confirm that the executing account has the
banpermission. - Check that the command begins with the correct slash and contains every required argument.
- Use an AGID when the username is ambiguous.
- Check the duration suffix and remove spaces inside the duration value.
- Put multi-word reasons in quotation marks so each reason remains one argument.
A manual entry is ignored
- Confirm that the file is named
bans.txtand is in the server’sSavedfolder. - Check that every line follows
AGID:UnixTimestamp:AdminReason:UserReason. - Make sure there is one ban per line and that no field has been shifted by a missing or extra colon.
- Verify that a temporary timestamp is in the future, or that
0is intentional for a permanent ban. - Save the file and run
/reloadbansinstead of waiting for the roughly one-minute hot-reload cycle.
The wrong moderation action was used
A server ban is different from /mute and /servermute. The mute commands affect communication; they do not replace a ban when the goal is to prevent a player from joining. Select the command that matches the actual rule violation and desired access restriction.
Safeguards for a reliable moderation workflow
- Restrict access: give the
banpermission only to staff you trust. - Confirm identity: compare the live player, username, and AGID before sending a command.
- Prefer a timed ban when appropriate: use the documented duration units rather than creating a permanent entry by mistake.
- Separate reasons: record a clear administrator reason and a suitable player-facing reason.
- Review file syntax: for manual changes, inspect every colon-separated field and each timestamp.
- Reload deliberately: run
/reloadbansafter an edit when immediate enforcement or restoration is required. - Distinguish access from chat moderation: use ban commands for server access and mute commands for communication restrictions.
Following this sequence keeps routine actions simple while reserving direct file editing and the permanent Spectator Mode control for cases where their specific trade-offs are understood.
