Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
On a Minecraft server that supports the standard ban command, enter /ban <playername> in in-game chat or the server console. You must have a sufficiently high multiplayer permission level, or console access granted by the server owner. The command blocks that player from the server; use /kick <playername> when you only need to remove the player from the current session.
Java and Bedrock deployments do not expose moderation controls in exactly the same way. The general Minecraft command guide documents /ban and /kick, while Microsoft’s Bedrock Dedicated Server documentation emphasizes /kick and owner-controlled allowlists. Check the exact server software and version before relying on a Java-style ban or unban command on Bedrock.
What a ban does—and what it does not do
A server ban is a local access-control decision. It prevents the named player from joining the server where the ban was applied. It does not automatically remove the player from Minecraft as a whole, and it does not suspend the player’s Microsoft account.

Use a kick for an immediate, temporary removal when you do not intend to impose a continuing restriction. Use a ban when your server policy calls for preventing that player from returning. Decide the duration, evidence standard, notification, and appeal process in your own rules; the official command references do not prescribe a universal policy for those matters.
Before you run the command
Confirm that you control the server
In multiplayer, Minecraft requires a high-enough permission level for commands. The owner of a server or Realm generally has the required authority by default. If you play on somebody else’s server, ask its administrator to perform the ban or grant the appropriate role. A normal player cannot bypass the server’s permission system by typing the command.

Identify the correct player name
Use the player’s exact in-game name as the server recognizes it. A spelling error can target nobody, or can leave the intended account unaffected. Copy the name from the player list or from the moderation record rather than relying on memory. On Bedrock allowlists, Microsoft documents a GamerTag as the identifier; a name containing spaces must be quoted.
Choose chat or console
- In-game chat: Type the command while connected with operator-level permissions. The leading slash tells Minecraft that the entry is a command.
- Server console: Enter the command in the server-management console when your host or dedicated machine provides one. Console access is an administrative privilege and is independent of ordinary player chat permissions.
How to ban a player with the standard command
- Open the server’s in-game chat, or focus the server console.
- Enter
/ban <playername>, replacing<playername>with the exact name. For example,/ban AlexExample. - Submit the command.
- Check the command feedback and your server’s moderation log. If the player is online, use the server’s normal feedback to verify whether the access restriction was applied and whether the current connection was removed.
- Record the reason and the time in the moderation system you use. Keeping a short record makes later appeals and staff handoffs consistent.
Minecraft’s official command guide describes /ban <playername> as “Bans a player from a server.” The command’s availability and behavior still depend on the server software and the permission level of the person issuing it.
When to use kick instead
The corresponding command is /kick <playername>. The official guide describes it as “Removes a player from a server.” A kick is appropriate when you need to stop an active session immediately but do not want to apply a continuing ban—for example, to end disruptive behavior while a moderator reviews logs or speaks with the player.

Kick followed by a policy decision
- Run
/kick <playername>to end the current connection. - Preserve relevant chat, gameplay, or server logs before they rotate.
- Apply the server’s stated warning, temporary-ban, or permanent-ban policy after reviewing the incident.
- Tell the player how to contact the server administrator if your rules provide an appeal route.
A kick alone does not express the same policy decision as a ban. The player may reconnect unless another control, such as an allowlist or a later ban, prevents it.
Java server considerations
The general Minecraft command documentation lists /ban and /kick for multiplayer command use. On a Java server that implements those standard controls, an authorized operator can issue the ban from chat or an administrator can issue it through the server console.
If the command is rejected
- Check that the command begins with a slash when entered in chat.
- Verify that you are an operator or otherwise hold the permission level required by that server.
- Check the spelling and capitalization of the player name as shown by the server.
- Confirm that you are connected to the intended server rather than a single-player world or a different instance.
- Ask the server owner which moderation plugin, proxy, or wrapper handles bans if the server does not use the standard command set.
Do not assume that a command supplied by a third-party administration tool has the same syntax or storage behavior as Minecraft’s built-in command. Follow the documentation for the software actually running your server.
Bedrock and Bedrock Dedicated Server
Bedrock documentation describes moderation differently from the general command page. Microsoft’s Bedrock command reference documents /kick and an owner-level /allowlist. The documented allowlist forms are:
/allowlist add <name: id>/allowlist remove <name: id>/allowlist list/allowlist reload
For Bedrock Dedicated Server, Microsoft states that operators can use /allowlist add <GamerTag> and /allowlist remove <GamerTag>. A GamerTag containing spaces must be quoted, for example /allowlist add "Player Name".

What an allowlist can accomplish
An allowlist is an admission list, not a record of individual wrongdoing. When it is enabled and maintained, only approved names can join. Removing a name prevents that player from joining through the allowlist even though you have not created a separate player-specific ban entry. This is useful for a private server whose intended audience is a known group, but it is inconvenient for a public server that must admit many players and remove only particular offenders.
Editing allowlist.json
If you edit allowlist.json outside Minecraft, run /allowlist reload afterward so the running Bedrock Dedicated Server reads the changed file. Keep a backup before editing, use the identifier format expected by that server build, and avoid simultaneous edits from two administration sessions.
Do not assume Java ban-list parity
The Bedrock references above document kick and owner-level allowlist operations; they are not evidence that every Bedrock server build supports the complete Java ban-list command set. Before publishing or applying a Bedrock-specific ban or unban procedure, identify the exact Bedrock server software and version and consult its own command reference. If the software offers a native ban feature, use its documented syntax. If it does not, an allowlist may be the available server-level access control, with the trade-off that it governs the approved population rather than only one player.
Removing a restriction later
Reversal depends on the control that created the restriction. An allowlist entry can be restored with the documented add operation, while a server’s ban list must be managed through that server’s supported unban or removal control. Because the official material supplied for this guide does not establish one universal unban command across Java and Bedrock implementations, do not copy a Java command into a Bedrock console without checking the exact software documentation.
When restoring access, verify the result with the server’s own list or status output, then ask the player to reconnect. If the player still cannot join, determine whether another control—such as an allowlist, a proxy-level rule, or a platform account action—is responsible.

Server ban versus Microsoft account enforcement
Minecraft Help distinguishes a privately owned server ban from an account ban. A player who is banned from a private server should contact that server’s administrator to appeal. Platform account enforcement is tied to the unique Microsoft account ID, not merely to a gamertag or profile name.
As a server administrator, you normally handle a private-server case through your own rules and records. You cannot convert a local /ban into a platform-wide account action by changing the command. Conversely, a player may be unable to access Minecraft because of account enforcement even after a server administrator removes a local restriction.
Design a fair ban policy
The command takes only a name, but a defensible moderation system needs more than a command line. Write the policy before an incident occurs so that moderators do not improvise different standards for similar cases.
Define the behaviors covered
List the conduct that can lead to removal or a ban, such as cheating, harassment, targeted abuse, theft, or repeated disruption. Avoid vague rules that leave players unable to predict consequences.
Set an escalation path
Explain when staff may warn, kick, apply a temporary restriction, or apply a longer restriction. The official command guide does not set a duration; your community must decide whether bans are temporary, indefinite, or permanent and how staff record that decision.

Preserve proportionate evidence
Keep the smallest useful record: the player name, date and time, rule involved, moderator, and relevant log or screenshot. Do not publish private information in a public channel merely to justify a moderation decision.

Publish an appeal route
State where a player can ask for review and what information to include. A server administrator can then reassess mistaken identity, changed behavior, or an expired restriction without relying on memory.
Troubleshooting common failures
“You do not have permission”
Your account lacks the required multiplayer permission level. Ask the owner to run the command, grant the appropriate operator role, or use the server console. Do not attempt to work around the permission system.
The name is not recognized
Check the exact spelling, capitalization, and edition-specific identifier. A Bedrock GamerTag with spaces needs quotation marks in the allowlist command. If the player changed names or joined through a proxy, ask the administrator which identifier the server stores.
The command works, but the player returns
First determine whether you used /kick rather than a persistent access restriction. Then check whether another server component controls entry. A proxy, allowlist, moderation plugin, or different server instance can make the command you ran irrelevant to the endpoint the player is entering.

If you changed allowlist.json outside the game, run /allowlist reload. Confirm that the file was edited on the active Bedrock Dedicated Server and that the GamerTag format matches the server’s expectations.
The player cannot join after you removed the server restriction
Check for a separate allowlist rule, a restriction on a proxy or network layer, or Microsoft account enforcement. A local server administrator can reverse only the local control they manage.
Quick decision checklist
- Is the player currently connected and do you only need the session to end? Use
/kick <playername>. - Does the server support the standard ban command, and do you have sufficient permission? Use
/ban <playername>. - Is this a Bedrock Dedicated Server using admission control? Use the documented
/allowlistoperations and reload the file after external edits. - Are you trying to affect the player outside your server? A server command cannot impose a Microsoft account ban.
- Will another moderator need to review the decision? Record the name, rule, evidence, date, and appeal route.
