On a Garry’s Mod server running ULX, ban an online player from the server console with ulx ban PlayerName 30 reason, or use !ban PlayerName 30 reason in administrator chat. Replace 30 with the number of minutes; use 0 for a permanent ban. If the player is offline or their name is ambiguous, target their SteamID with ulx banid STEAM_ID 30 reason. Reverse a ULX ban with ulx unban STEAM_ID.
What you need before issuing a ban
The commands in this guide assume your server has the ULX Admin plugin and its ULib dependency installed and loaded. You also need either access to the dedicated server console or an in-game account with the appropriate ULX access group. A command typed by a player without permission may produce no visible result, return an access-denied message, or be unavailable in the command list.
- Server console: accepts ULX commands without the exclamation mark and is useful when the player is disruptive, chat is unavailable, or you need a reliable audit trail.
- In-game administrator chat: accepts the same action through a
!command, provided your account can use that ULX command. - Target identity: use the exact current name for a connected player, or a SteamID when the player is offline, has changed names, or several players have similar names.
- Reason and duration: decide these from your published rules before entering the command. ULX treats the minutes value as the duration and uses
0for a permanent ban in the documented workflow.
The ULX implementation gives ulx banid a default superadmin access level. Server owners can change ULX groups and command permissions, so the effective requirement on your server may be stricter or different. If ULX commands are not recognized, check that both ULX and ULib are loaded rather than repeatedly retrying a correctly formed command.

Do not include angle brackets from the notation in an actual command. For example, enter a real player name, number, and reason in place of PlayerName, minutes, and reason. Spaces separate the arguments, so a multi-word reason belongs after the duration and can be written as ordinary words.

Ban an online player by name
1. Confirm the target
Identify the connected player in the ULX player selector or by checking the exact name shown in the player list. Names can contain spaces, punctuation, or characters that make a partial match select the wrong person. If two names match the same fragment, stop and use the player selector or SteamID instead. A ban is an administrative action, not a substitute for confirming identity.
2. Choose a duration and reason
Use minutes for a temporary sanction. For example, a 30-minute ban for a repeated rule violation is entered with the duration 30. To make the ban permanent, enter 0. Keep the reason short and factual, such as “repeated rule violation” or “mass prop damage”; avoid insults, speculation, or private information.
3. Run the console command
In the dedicated server console, enter:

ulx ban PlayerName 0 repeated rule violationULX applies the action to the selected connected player and records the administrative action according to the server’s logging configuration. If the name contains spaces, use the exact name handling supported by your ULX version or select the player through the admin menu instead of guessing at quoting rules.
4. Use the chat form when appropriate
An administrator with in-game ULX access can issue the equivalent action in chat:

!ban PlayerName 30 repeated rule violationChat commands are convenient when you do not have the console in front of you, but they expose the command to the normal in-game chat flow. Use the server console for sensitive reasons or when you need to avoid broadcasting administrative details.
5. Confirm the result
Check that the player was removed or denied re-entry and that the ban appears in the ULX or server log. If the player remains connected, verify that you targeted the intended name, that your account has ban permission, and that ULX is loaded. Do not immediately stack several bans while diagnosing a failed command; that can create confusing records.
Ban an offline player or avoid name ambiguity with a SteamID
A SteamID is the safer target when the player has already disconnected, changes their display name, or shares a similar name with another player. Obtain the identifier from a trusted server record, an administrative player list, or the player’s established profile information. Check every character before submitting it; a one-character error can identify a different account or simply create no usable ban.
Timed identity ban
Use the identity form in the console:
ulx banid STEAM_ID_OR_STEAMID64 30 repeated rule violationReplace the placeholder with the actual SteamID or SteamID64 accepted by your ULX installation. The same structure can be entered in administrator chat with !banid instead of ulx banid.
Permanent identity ban
Set the minutes argument to 0 when the rule or incident warrants a permanent action:

ulx banid STEAM_ID_OR_STEAMID64 0 repeated rule violationThe ULX implementation validates the supplied SteamID, logs the operation, and queues the ban. Its identity path is designed for player accounts rather than the listen-server host or bots; those targets are rejected by the implementation. The default access level for this command is superadmin, although local permission settings can override defaults.
Why identity targeting is preferable for recurring offenders
- A display name can change immediately after a ban, while the account identifier remains the administrative reference.
- Offline targeting lets you act after reviewing logs or a report instead of requiring the player to reconnect.
- Identity targeting reduces the chance that a partial name selects the wrong connected player.
Choose the duration and write a defensible reason
Timed bans
A timed ban is appropriate when your rules specify a cooling-off period, escalating penalty, or temporary removal while staff review an incident. Enter the duration in minutes. The number is not a clock time or a date; it is the length of the ban from the moment ULX accepts the command.
Permanent bans
In the documented ULX workflow, 0 in the minutes position creates a permanent ban. Reserve this for conduct covered by your published permanent-ban policy, and record enough factual context that another administrator can understand the decision later.
Reasons and moderation records
The reason argument is optional, but omitting it makes later review harder. State the rule or observable behavior, not a conclusion about the player’s character. Include an incident identifier or date in a separate staff log if your community uses one; do not put passwords, addresses, real names, or other private information into a public reason field.

These interfaces reach the same ULX moderation system when they invoke the same command. Pick the one that gives you the most reliable target and the least chance of exposing sensitive staff information.

Unban a player
For a ULX-managed ban, use the identity whenever possible:
ulx unban STEAM_ID_OR_USERNAMEThe in-game form is:
!unban STEAM_ID_OR_USERNAMEA username can work, but a SteamID is more dependable because display names change. If the command reports that no matching ban exists, check the identifier format, spelling, and whether the ban was created by ULX or by a native server mechanism. Removing a native ban may require the corresponding native removal command rather than ULX’s unban command.
Native Garry’s Mod ban mechanisms
ULX is an add-on layer. Server-side Lua can also call Garry’s Mod’s native Player:Ban(minutes, kick) method. The first argument is the duration in minutes; the second controls whether the player is kicked as part of the operation. A script that passes true for kick removes the player immediately, while a false value leaves the connection decision to the surrounding code.

Native bans are useful when a custom gamemode or moderation system already performs its own checks, logging, and permission handling. They do not automatically grant ordinary administrators access: your script must authenticate the administrator, validate the target, and record the reason. Do not paste a Lua call into a client console expecting it to become a server-side ban; the method must run in server-side code.
Monitoring native actions
Garry’s Mod emits the server_addban event for Player:Ban, banip, and banid. The event data includes the player name, SteamID, IP address, ban duration, banning party, and a kicked flag. A logging hook can use that information to build an audit record, subject to your privacy policy.

Native removal commands raise server_removeban for removeid and removeip. Its event data indicates whether the removed entry was associated with a SteamID or an IP address, which helps staff distinguish an identity reversal from an address reversal.
SteamID bans versus IP bans

An IP ban is separate from a SteamID ban. In the official server_addban event documentation, the network ID is empty for banip, while the IP field is empty for banid. That distinction matters when reading logs: an empty field does not mean the event failed; it identifies which kind of ban was issued.

Prefer an account-based ban unless your rules and evidence justify the broader network effect.
Verify, document, and review the action
- Confirm the target identity. Record the SteamID for an identity ban and the exact name used for an online name ban.
- Check the duration. Make sure a temporary value was not accidentally entered as
0, and make sure the intended permanent action was not given a finite number. - Read the server response. Look for ULX’s success, access, or validation message in the console or administrator interface.
- Check the connection state. A successful action normally removes the online target or prevents a subsequent connection, depending on the mechanism.
- Preserve the reason and log entry. Keep the factual reason, acting administrator, timestamp, and relevant evidence in the staff record your community uses.
- Apply the same standard to comparable incidents. If staff make an exception, document why so future decisions are consistent.
Do not publish a player’s private information to justify a ban. A moderation record should contain only what staff need to enforce the rules and review the decision.
Troubleshoot a command that does nothing
“Unknown command” or no ULX response
- Confirm the ULX Admin plugin is installed in the server’s add-ons and that ULib loaded successfully at startup.
- Run the command in the dedicated server console, where the missing dependency or syntax error is easier to see.
- Check that you are connected to the intended server instance; a local client console is not the same as the server console.
Access denied
- Check your ULX group and the access level assigned to the specific command.
- Remember that the documented default access for
ulx banidis superadmin; a moderator group may be allowed to useulx banbut not the identity command. - Have the server owner review ULX permissions rather than granting broad superadmin access to every moderator.
Wrong player selected
- Stop using partial names when multiple players match.
- Use the menu’s player selector or obtain the SteamID and use
banid. - Review the log before issuing another command so you do not leave an unintended second ban.
The player reconnects after a ban
- Check whether the original action targeted a display name rather than the account’s SteamID.
- Verify that the ban duration was not mistyped and that the server clock and ban database are functioning.
- Determine whether the first ban was a native IP or identity entry and use the matching removal or inspection path when correcting it.
Unban cannot find the entry
- Use the exact SteamID recorded at ban time instead of the player’s current name.
- Check whether another administrator used a native command, a separate gamemode database, or a different server instance.
- Inspect the server log and the active ban list before creating a replacement entry.
Moderation practice for a fair ban system
Publish the rules that define temporary and permanent bans, and make the reason field match those rules. A short, factual reason gives the player and other administrators a usable explanation without turning the command into a public argument. Escalate duration when your policy calls for it, not merely because an administrator is frustrated.
Facepunch’s Server Operator Rules describe Garry’s Mod servers as community hosted and state: “If you do not agree with an action of administration of a server you play on, you can play on a different server.” The same rules prohibit releasing players’ private information publicly. That leaves each server responsible for clear local rules, consistent enforcement, and privacy-respecting records.

When a ban is disputed, review the evidence, command, identity, duration, and staff notes. If an error occurred, remove the correct entry and record the correction rather than silently editing history. A transparent process protects both the community and the administrators who enforce it.
