The reliable way to back up an Unturned dedicated server is to save it cleanly, then copy the complete U3DS/Servers/<ServerID> directory to dated storage outside the live installation. Unturned has no built-in autosave, so issue the Save command while the server is running or use Shutdown to save and close it safely before copying files. A usable backup also preserves configuration, Workshop manifests, permissions, and any Rocket/LDM modules or plugins.

What an Unturned backup must contain

An Unturned server is more than a map file. The authoritative save boundary is the server-specific directory named for your ServerID:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
U3DS/Servers/<ServerID>

Copy that entire directory. Do not copy only a Level folder and assume the server can reconstruct everything else. The ServerID directory holds the world state and the settings that make the save usable on restore.

World and player state

The directory contains the saved map state, structures, vehicles, containers, inventories, and other persistent data for that ServerID. Keeping the whole directory preserves the relationship between those files instead of mixing files from different save points.

  • Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable

Configuration and permissions

Preserve the server’s configuration files, including Server/Commands.dat, Config.txt (or the difficulty configuration used by that server), and administrator or permission files. These determine settings such as commands, difficulty, access, and gameplay behavior. A world restored without its matching configuration can load with the wrong rules or leave administrators without their expected privileges.

Workshop and extension dependencies

Include WorkshopDownloadConfig.json. It records the Workshop IDs the server is expected to download. Unturned updates Workshop files and dependencies at startup, so the manifest is part of a reproducible backup even when the downloaded content can be fetched again.

If the installation uses Rocket/LDM or another module and plugin arrangement, preserve those directories and files as well. The documented Rocket setup copies the Rocket.Unturned module from Extras to Modules; a restore must retain the corresponding module and plugin files rather than only the world save.

Save the server before copying anything

Unturned does not provide built-in autosave. Copying files while the process is writing them can produce an internally inconsistent backup. Create a clean save point first.

Option 1: Save while the server remains online

  1. Open the server console or the administrative command interface.
  2. Run the Save command exactly as supported by your server setup.
  3. Wait for the save operation to finish and for any console activity associated with saving to settle.
  4. Copy the complete ServerID directory to your backup destination.

This option minimizes downtime, but it still requires disciplined timing: do not begin copying a file that is actively changing, and do not let players continue making changes if you cannot confirm that the save boundary has completed.

Option 2: Shut down cleanly

  1. Warn connected players that maintenance is beginning.
  2. Run the Shutdown command from the server console or administration interface.
  3. Wait until the server process has exited completely.
  4. Copy the ServerID directory while no Unturned process can modify it.
  5. Start the server again after the copy completes.

A clean shutdown is the simplest method for a high-confidence backup because every file is closed before the copy starts.

Find the correct ServerID directory

Dedicated hosting is supported on Windows and Linux. macOS hosting is not supported in the cited Unturned documentation. SteamCMD installs the dedicated server under:

steamapps/common/U3DS

Launch scripts select a server with either +InternetServer/<ServerID> or +LanServer/<ServerID>. The resulting save and configuration directory is:

U3DS/Servers/<ServerID>

Windows

Starting from the SteamCMD library, open the U3DSServers folder and identify the directory matching the ServerID used in your launch command. For example:

C:pathtosteamappscommonU3DSServersMyServer

If several ServerID directories exist, back up each active server separately. Do not merge them into one folder; each has independent world and configuration data.

Linux

Use the equivalent path under the SteamCMD library, commonly:

/path/to/steamapps/common/U3DS/Servers/MyServer

Check the launch script for the exact ServerID. A typo in the destination can create a perfectly valid backup of the wrong server.

Manual backup procedure

  1. Record the identity. Write down the ServerID, launch mode (Internet or LAN), map, and whether Workshop content or plugins are enabled.
  2. Create the save point. Run Save, or run Shutdown and wait for the process to exit.
  3. Close competing writers. Ensure no second server process, updater, or maintenance job is modifying the same ServerID directory.
  4. Copy the complete directory. Copy U3DS/Servers/<ServerID>, including all subdirectories and files, to storage outside the live U3DS installation.
  5. Add identifying metadata. Use a date-and-time folder name such as 2026-10-15_2300 and record the Unturned build, map, and ServerID in a text file next to the archive.
  6. Check the copy. Compare the source and destination file counts or sizes and confirm that the destination contains the expected configuration and Workshop files.

Keep the archived copy separate from the live installation. A second disk, NAS, or remote storage location protects against a failed system disk or accidental deletion of the server directory.

Files and folders to verify

The exact contents vary with the server version and installed extensions, but a practical checklist is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Server/Commands.dat
  • Config.txt or the applicable difficulty configuration
  • WorkshopDownloadConfig.json
  • Administrator, permission, and moderation files
  • Map and player-save data under the ServerID directory
  • Any Modules, Plugins, or equivalent extension directories used by the installation
  • Rocket/LDM setup files, including the module arrangement required by your installation

Do not delete unfamiliar files from the backup to make it smaller. If you need a smaller transfer, compress the complete ServerID directory rather than selecting only files that appear important.

Automate recurring backups without creating corrupt copies

Automation is useful, but a scheduler cannot make an unsafe save point safe. The automation must either run after an administrator has issued Save, or stop the server cleanly before copying. Test the workflow manually before scheduling it.

Windows copy with PowerShell and Robocopy

After saving or shutting down the server, a PowerShell script can create a dated destination and copy the complete tree:

$source = 'C:pathtosteamappscommonU3DSServersMyServer'
$root = 'D:UnturnedBackupsMyServer'
$stamp = Get-Date -Format 'yyyy-MM-dd_HHmmss'
$destination = Join-Path $root $stamp
New-Item -ItemType Directory -Force -Path $destination | Out-Null
robocopy $source $destination /E /COPY:DAT /DCOPY:DAT /R:2 /W:5 /XJ
if ($LASTEXITCODE -ge 8) { exit $LASTEXITCODE }

/E includes subdirectories, while /COPY:DAT preserves data, attributes, and timestamps. The script intentionally writes a new dated directory instead of overwriting the previous backup. Configure Windows Task Scheduler to run it at a maintenance time when the server is already stopped, or place it behind your own controlled stop-and-start procedure.

  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Linux copy with rsync

After a clean save or shutdown, create a timestamped copy with:

source='/path/to/steamapps/common/U3DS/Servers/MyServer/'
root='/var/backups/unturned/MyServer'
stamp=$(date -u +%Y-%m-%d_%H%M%S)
destination="$root/$stamp"
mkdir -p "$destination"
rsync -a "$source" "$destination/"

Run this from a system account that can read every file in the ServerID directory. A cron job should be scheduled around a maintenance routine that guarantees the server is not writing during the copy; do not assume that a recurring file copy alone provides a consistent backup.

Archive for transport or off-site storage

Compression can make a dated copy easier to move, while retaining the complete directory structure:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
tar -C /path/to/steamapps/common/U3DS/Servers -czf
  /var/backups/unturned/MyServer-2026-10-15_2300.tar.gz MyServer

Keep the original dated copy until you have verified that the archive can be listed and extracted. An archive that was never tested is not a dependable recovery point.

Choose a retention and storage plan

Unturned does not publish a universal backup-retention rule. Choose a schedule based on how often your players build, trade, or change the world.

  • Active public server: create frequent copies, such as daily or more often when major building sessions occur.
  • Occasional or private server: a copy before and after a play session may be sufficient.
  • Before updates or large Workshop changes: create a named pre-change backup so you can return to the last known-good state.

Use a rotation that keeps several recent points instead of one file that is continually overwritten. Keep at least one copy on separate storage from the host. A backup on the same disk does not help if that disk fails, the operating system is damaged, or ransomware encrypts both the live files and the backup.

Protect archives from accidental edits and restrict access because permission files and administrative data may be sensitive. If storage is remote, verify that transfers complete and that the remote copy is actually downloadable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restore an Unturned server after corruption or data loss

Restore only when you have identified the correct archive and the live server is stopped. The safest procedure uses a disposable ServerID first.

  1. Stop the live server. Use Shutdown and wait for the process to exit. Do not overwrite files while the server is running.
  2. Preserve the current state. Rename the existing directory, for example from MyServer to MyServer-before-restore, rather than deleting it immediately.
  3. Prepare the destination. Recreate the original path under U3DS/Servers.
  4. Copy the archive back. Extract or copy the archived <ServerID> directory into the same location, retaining its internal structure.
  5. Check the launch identity. Confirm that the launch script still uses the restored ServerID and the intended Internet or LAN mode.
  6. Check dependencies. Open WorkshopDownloadConfig.json and verify the expected Workshop IDs. Confirm that module and plugin directories are present.
  7. Start the server. Watch the console for configuration, Workshop, or plugin errors.
  8. Validate in game. Confirm the expected map, structures, containers, player inventories, permissions, and administrative commands.
  9. Keep the old directory temporarily. Remove it only after the restored server has been tested and players have confirmed that the expected state is present.

Why a disposable ServerID helps

A test restore separates recovery testing from the production world. Copy the archive into a temporary ServerID or a separate test installation, start it privately, and verify the map, player data, Workshop dependencies, and permissions. This catches incomplete archives without risking new changes on the live server.

Common backup and restore failures

The restored server starts with an old map or missing buildings

The wrong ServerID directory was copied, or only a map-level file was backed up. Recheck the launch argument and restore the complete matching U3DS/Servers/<ServerID> directory.

Players or administrators are missing

Permission, administrator, or player-save files were omitted or taken from a different backup date. Restore the complete archive rather than combining individual files from multiple dates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Workshop content is missing

Verify that WorkshopDownloadConfig.json was included and that the server can reach Steam Workshop at startup. The manifest identifies what should be downloaded; it does not replace the need for network access or compatible content.

Plugins fail after restore

Check that the module and plugin directories were copied, including the Rocket/LDM arrangement used by the original installation. A world save alone cannot recreate third-party extensions. Review startup errors for a missing module, incompatible plugin, or changed dependency.

The backup copy is incomplete or locked

Repeat the backup after issuing Shutdown and waiting for the process to exit. On Windows, check that no second process has open handles; on Linux, confirm that the scheduled job runs under an account with read access to every file.

The archive exists but cannot be restored

List or extract a test copy before relying on it. If the archive is damaged, use the next older dated copy. This is why rotating backups are safer than maintaining a single file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manual, scheduled, and managed approaches compared

Approach Save-point consistency Scope Retention and off-site protection Restore testing Administrative effort
Manual copy Depends on the operator issuing Save or Shutdown first Can include the complete ServerID directory Must be designed and maintained by you Must be performed manually Low frequency, high attention at each backup
Scheduled script Reliable only when the script coordinates a clean save or shutdown Consistent when it copies the complete ServerID directory Rotation and separate storage can be scripted Still requires periodic disposable restores More setup, less recurring labor
Managed hosting with backups Depends on the provider’s save and snapshot implementation Confirm that world, configuration, Workshop, and plugin files are included Review retention, location, and download options before relying on it Confirm that a full restore can be requested or tested Less server maintenance, but dependent on the provider’s controls

Regardless of method, the requirements are the same: a known save boundary, the complete ServerID directory, reproducible dependencies, dated copies, separate storage, and a tested restore.

Windows and Linux operational notes

The documented dedicated-server support covers Windows and Linux. Use the path and scheduling tools native to the operating system, but keep the backup boundary identical. On either platform, the launch argument identifies the ServerID and the saved data lives below U3DS/Servers. macOS is not a supported hosting platform in the cited documentation, so do not design a production backup workflow around a macOS dedicated server.

A practical pre-backup checklist

  • Have I identified the active ServerID and launch mode?
  • Did I run Save or complete a clean Shutdown?
  • Am I copying the entire U3DS/Servers/<ServerID> directory?
  • Are Commands.dat, configuration, permissions, and WorkshopDownloadConfig.json present?
  • Are module and plugin directories included if the server uses them?
  • Is the destination outside the live installation?
  • Does the dated copy have enough storage and a clear server identity?
  • Is at least one copy on separate storage?
  • Have I restored a copy on a disposable ServerID recently?
