Back up a Ubisoft save by first confirming the exact game, platform, and shutdown entry, then keeping an independent copy of any accessible local save. For Ubisoft Connect PC, close the game and launcher, copy the relevant folder from C:Program Files (x86)UbisoftUbisoft Game Launchersavegames to separate storage, and verify the copied files before changing synchronization or restoring anything. Cloud synchronization is available only for supported PC games and is not the same as an offline backup.

What Ubisoft service shutdowns actually affect

There is no single Ubisoft shutdown date or save policy that applies to every title and platform. Start with Ubisoft’s current decommissioning notice and the support page for your game. Match all three details: the game, the platform, and the storefront or account arrangement you use.

Ubisoft’s legacy notice lists title- and platform-specific service dates. One indexed entry shows 30 June 2026 for affected PC entries, but that date is not a universal deadline for every Ubisoft game. The notice says that most listed closures affect online multiplayer, in-game news, player statistics, and retired Units and Challenges, while offline features remain available for the covered titles. A separate Ubisoft announcement dated 27 October 2023 similarly says that decommissioning affects certain online functions and that purchased games remain playable; apply that assurance only to the titles and platforms named in that announcement.

Those notices do not establish that every game will retain cloud synchronization, cross-progression, or an export function after its online services end. Treat the title-specific entry as the authority for what is ending and use the backup steps below only where your platform actually exposes a local save.

Make a shutdown-safe backup plan

1. Record the exact game and platform

  • Write down the game’s full name and edition.
  • Identify whether you play on a Windows PC through Ubisoft Connect or on a console.
  • Note whether the game was installed through Ubisoft Connect or another PC storefront that still launches Ubisoft Connect.
  • Check Ubisoft’s current decommissioning list for that exact title/platform combination and read the game-specific support guidance.

Do not infer the result from another game in the same series. A closure can remove online features without removing local progress, but the evidence and available recovery method differ by title and platform.

2. Choose an independent destination

For a local PC save, copy the folder to a location separate from the original, such as another internal drive or an external drive. Removable storage is optional; it is simply a practical place to retain a second copy. It cannot export a save that exists only in a cloud service or provide a universal console-save solution.

3. Preserve the original before troubleshooting

Keep the untouched source folder until you have confirmed that the backup contains files and, ideally, that the game can read a restored copy. Do not move the only copy, rename individual save files, or accept a local/cloud replacement prompt before preserving what is currently on the computer.

Inside that directory, saves are organized first under a long account-ID folder and then under a game folder. Folder names and contents vary by game, so do not assume that a particular numeric name identifies a title without checking its contents and the game’s support page.

  1. Finish the game normally. Save in the game’s own menu, wait for any saving indicator to finish, and return to the desktop.
  2. Exit the game completely. A file that is still being written can produce an incomplete copy.
  3. Quit Ubisoft Connect. Close the launcher rather than leaving it running in the notification area. If it remains active, use its exit command and wait for the process to close.
  4. Open File Explorer. Paste C:Program Files (x86)UbisoftUbisoft Game Launchersavegames into the address bar. If Windows reports that the path does not exist, do not create a replacement folder blindly; consult the specific game’s Ubisoft Help page because an installation or title can use a different location.
  5. Open the account-ID folder. The first-level folder is a long identifier associated with your Ubisoft account. If several account folders exist, inspect the dates and game subfolders rather than guessing.
  6. Identify the game folder. Open the subfolders and use the game-specific support instructions to determine which one contains the desired save. Do not edit files while identifying it.
  7. Copy the complete game folder. Right-click the folder, choose Copy, open your separate backup destination, and choose Paste. Keep the folder structure and every file intact.
  8. Label the backup. Include the game name, platform, and date in the destination folder or its parent folder. A label such as GameName_PC_2026-10-13 makes it easier to distinguish multiple progress points without changing the files inside the save folder.
  9. Verify the copy. Open the copied folder and confirm that it contains files, not just an empty directory. Compare its approximate size with the source and check that the copy operation completed without an error.
  10. Retain the source and backup. Do not delete the original or turn the backup into the only copy. If you plan to test a restore, work from a duplicate of the backup so the preserved version remains untouched.

Ubisoft Help states that on PC an earlier saved-game version can be restored when a backup copy exists. Its restore guidance also recognizes backups made with Windows File History, provided File History was configured before the loss or corruption occurred.

Cloud synchronization is not an offline backup

Ubisoft Connect cloud synchronization is a service setting, not a separately retained copy that you control. Ubisoft says synchronization is available only for supported Ubisoft Connect PC games and is enabled by default for those supported games.

To view the setting in Ubisoft Connect PC, open your profile menu, choose Settings, and open General. The synchronization control is located there. Turning synchronization off does not create a backup and does not copy files to another location.

Method What you retain Where it applies Important limitation
Ubisoft Connect cloud synchronization A service-managed synchronized version Supported Ubisoft Connect PC games It is not an offline copy under your control; support and behavior are title-specific.
Copied local save folder Your own file-level copy of the PC save folder Games that store an accessible save in the documented PC location or another title-specific location You must identify the correct account and game folders and preserve the folder intact.
Windows File History Earlier versions of files included in File History Windows PCs where File History was configured and captured the save folder It cannot recover a version that File History never recorded.

Using both synchronization and a copied local folder can provide different recovery options, but neither removes the need to check whether your particular game is supported.

Handle a local-versus-cloud prompt safely

After a synchronization problem, Ubisoft Connect may ask whether to use a local save or a cloud save. Do not choose automatically. The selection can replace the other version in the recovery flow, so preserve the current local folder first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Stop at the prompt. Do not click through while assuming that cloud means newer or safer.
  2. Exit or pause the process if possible. Make a copy of the current local game folder using the PC procedure above.
  3. Compare progress. Decide which version contains the latest wanted progress and whether it opens correctly. File dates can help, but the meaningful test is the progress shown by the game.
  4. Use Ubisoft’s documented corrupted-cloud procedure when it matches your situation. Disable synchronization, keep the intended local save, exit Ubisoft Connect, re-enable synchronization, and wait for the choice prompt.
  5. Select the intended local save only after checking it. Ubisoft’s troubleshooting instructions describe choosing the local save to replace a corrupted cloud copy. That action is appropriate only when the local version is the one you want to keep.
  6. Launch the game and verify progress. If the result is wrong, close the game without creating more progress and return to the preserved backup rather than repeatedly accepting prompts.

The cloud copy is not always newer. A local save can contain the latest session, while a cloud copy can be stale or corrupted; the correct choice depends on the actual progress in each version.

Restore a PC save from your backup

Restore a copied folder

  1. Close the game and Ubisoft Connect completely.
  2. Keep a safety copy of the current save folder before replacing anything.
  3. Open the Ubisoft Connect savegames directory, then the correct account-ID and game folders.
  4. Rename the current game folder or copy it to a separate temporary location. Renaming preserves a rollback path without deleting files.
  5. Copy the backed-up game folder into the matching account-ID folder, preserving the original folder name and structure.
  6. Start Ubisoft Connect and the game. Check that the expected progress loads before making a new save.

If the game does not recognize the restored files, stop and return to the preserved source. A different save location, account folder, file naming scheme, or game-specific format may be involved; consult that title’s Ubisoft Help instructions instead of modifying files at random.

Restore with Windows File History

Ubisoft’s PC restore article recognizes Windows File History as a backup source. In File Explorer, browse to the save folder, open the File History interface for that location, select an earlier version, and restore it only after keeping a copy of the current files. This method works only if File History was enabled and had already captured the relevant folder.

What console players should do

Do not copy the Ubisoft Connect Windows path onto a console or assume that a console save can be exported in the same way. The reviewed Ubisoft guidance does not establish one universal console export process.

For a console title:

  • Check the current Ubisoft decommissioning entry for the exact console and game.
  • Read the game-specific Ubisoft support page for any platform-native backup, transfer, or cloud-save instructions.
  • Check the console platform’s own account and storage-recovery options where applicable.
  • Do not delete local data merely because an online feature is ending.
  • Record which account owns the game and which profile created the save before changing hardware or accounts.

If the title’s support information does not describe an export or restore path, there is no evidence here for a universal workaround. Keep the console’s local data intact and seek title-specific guidance rather than applying PC file instructions.

Timing: when to make the copy

Make the first copy before the listed service date and before experimenting with synchronization. Then create another dated copy after a major milestone if the game continues to receive local progress. A shutdown notice is not necessarily a save-export deadline, but waiting until the service is already unavailable can remove access to a cloud version or support workflow that you still need to compare.

Because the date and affected functions are title- and platform-specific, use the current Ubisoft notice for the operative date. The 30 June 2026 date shown in an indexed legacy entry applies to the affected entries in that notice, not to every Ubisoft game.

Troubleshooting common backup failures

The default folder is missing

Confirm that you are on the Windows PC installation that uses Ubisoft Connect, that hidden or protected folders are visible where necessary, and that Ubisoft Connect is installed in the expected location. If the path still is not present, stop using a guessed folder and open the game-specific Ubisoft Help page. Ubisoft notes that folder contents can vary by game and installation.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The copied folder is empty

Check that the game was closed before copying, that you selected the game subfolder rather than its parent, and that the copy completed. An empty directory is not evidence of a usable backup. Reopen the original only after confirming that no save operation is still in progress, then copy the complete folder again.

Ubisoft Connect keeps showing a conflict

Disable synchronization only after preserving the local folder. Compare the progress in each version, follow the documented local-save recovery sequence when the cloud copy is corrupted, and avoid alternating choices without a preserved rollback copy.

The restored save does not load

Return to the untouched backup, confirm the account-ID and game-folder levels, and verify that the game and platform match. Do not mix saves from different accounts or editions. If the title uses a different path or file format, use its support instructions; the default PC path is not a universal rule.

You already deleted the local folder

Do not create new progress that could overwrite recoverable data. Check the Recycle Bin, Windows File History, and any separately stored copy, then consult Ubisoft’s restore guidance. Recovery is possible only from a surviving backup or a service/platform copy that still exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical pre-shutdown checklist

  • Identify the exact game, platform, edition, and storefront.
  • Read the current Ubisoft decommission notice and the game-specific support page.
  • Finish a normal in-game save and close the game.
  • Exit Ubisoft Connect before copying PC files.
  • Locate the account-ID and game folders under the Ubisoft Connect savegames directory, or follow the title-specific path.
  • Copy the complete folder to separate storage.
  • Open the copied folder and verify that files are present.
  • Keep the original and label the backup with the game and date.
  • Review the cloud synchronization setting under profile > Settings > General, remembering that the setting is not an offline backup.
  • Before accepting a local/cloud prompt, preserve the local folder and decide which version has the wanted progress.
  • For console games, use only title- and platform-specific instructions rather than the Windows path.

Bottom line

Protecting a Ubisoft save means verifying the shutdown scope first, then retaining a copy you can access without relying solely on Ubisoft’s synchronization service. On Ubisoft Connect PC, the dependable starting point is an intact copy of the correct account and game folder, kept separately and before any restore or conflict decision. For consoles and games with different storage layouts, the exact title/platform support page remains essential because Ubisoft does not provide one universal export procedure.
