The correct backup method depends on whether your VR title uses the PS4 or PS5 save format. Original PlayStation VR games are generally PS4 titles, while PS VR2 games are PS5 titles. Copy PS4-format saves to a normal FAT32 or exFAT USB drive, or use PlayStation Plus cloud storage. PS5-format saves must use PlayStation Plus cloud storage because Sony does not allow copying them from the console to USB. Back up installed games separately: USB extended storage holds applications and add-ons, not saved progress.
Start by identifying your headset and game version
Do not choose a backup route from the headset name alone. Check the game’s platform label in your library, on its product page, or on the game disc. The save format is what determines the available backup options.
| VR platform | Console and game relationship | Backup consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Original PlayStation VR | Associated primarily with PS4-format games; the headset can also be used with PS5 in supported configurations | Most saves use the PS4 save route: selective USB copy or PlayStation Plus cloud storage |
| PS VR2 | A PS5 platform with its own game versions | PS5-format saves use PlayStation Plus cloud storage; they cannot be copied to USB |
PS VR and PS VR2 are separate libraries. Sony’s compatibility documentation states: “There is no compatibility between PlayStation®VR and PS VR2.” A PS VR2 title is not automatically the same product as an original PS VR title, even when the names are similar. A remaster, remake, or native PS5 release can also use a different save format.
That distinction matters when you move from a PS4 console to a PS5. A PS4-format VR game running on PS5 can retain the PS4 save workflow. A native PS5 version requires the PS5 cloud workflow. There is no universal rule that a PS4 save will transfer into every separate PS5 release, so check the individual game’s transfer instructions before deleting the old save.

Use a simple decision check before backing up
- Identify the version. Mark each title as PS4 or PS5 format, even if you play it on a PS5.
- Decide what you are protecting. Saved progress, installed applications, or the entire PS4 console require different methods.
- Choose the destination. Select a normal USB storage device for eligible PS4 saves, PlayStation Plus cloud storage for either save format, or extended storage for applications and add-ons.
- Plan the restore. A selective save copy replaces only selected files; a full PS4 restore replaces the console’s current contents.
This check prevents the most common mistake: putting a save on an extended-storage drive and assuming the game installation and progress are protected together. They are separate data sets and must be backed up separately.
Choose the backup method that matches your goal
Saved progress and installed game files are different data. Use the matrix below before connecting a drive or starting a transfer.
| Method | PS4 saves | PS5 saves | PlayStation Plus required | What it protects | Restore behavior |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Selective USB save copy | Yes, on PS4 and for PS4 saves managed on PS5 | No | No | Selected save files | Copies selected files back to console storage |
| PlayStation Plus cloud storage | Yes | Yes | Yes | Saved progress | Download or synchronize saves on a compatible console |
| Full PS4 console backup | Includes PS4 saved data and other console content | Not a PS5-save backup method | No | PS4 games and apps, saves, captures, and settings | Restores the console as a whole and erases current console data |
| USB extended storage | Installed applications and add-ons only | Installed applications and add-ons only | No | Game installation files | PS5 games must be moved back to console or M.2 storage before playing |
| Redownload from your game library | Digital game installation | Digital game installation | No | Your purchased download | Does not restore saved progress by itself |
A local USB save copy is selective and does not require PlayStation Plus, making it useful for important PS4-format progress. Cloud storage is the only listed route for PS5-format saves and also provides an off-console copy for PS4 saves. A full PS4 backup is broader, but its restore operation is intentionally destructive to the destination console. Extended storage and redownloading solve installation problems, not progress recovery.

Copy PS4-format VR saves to a USB drive
From a PS4 console
Use a regular compatible USB storage device. Do not configure it as USB extended storage for this job; extended storage is intended for installed applications and add-ons, not PS4 application saved data.
- Connect the USB storage device to the PS4.
- Open Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data in System Storage > Copy to USB Storage Device.
- Select the VR game, then select the save files you want to preserve.
- Start the copy and leave the console on until it finishes.
PlayStation’s PS4 save-copy feature requires you to sign in. Keep the USB device in a safe place and, when possible, maintain a second copy rather than treating one removable drive as your only backup.
Copy only after the game has finished saving. If you have just completed a long session, return to the game’s normal save point, quit it, and then copy the files. This keeps the backup tied to a known point in your progress. Before relying on the drive for a console replacement, copy one less-important save back to a console and confirm that the game recognizes it.
From a PS5 for a PS4-format game
A PS5 can copy PS4 saved data to USB. This path applies only when the game is using the PS4 format; do not select it for a native PS5 save.

- Insert a compatible USB storage device into the PS5.
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS4) > Copy to USB Drive.
- Select the game and the save files to copy.
- Wait for the copy to complete before removing the drive.
To restore a PS4 save on PS5, return to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS4), choose Copy or Delete from USB Drive, and copy the selected files to console storage.
What the USB method does not do
- It does not copy PS5-format saved data.
- It does not convert a PS4 save into a save for a separate PS5 remake or remaster.
- It does not preserve an installed game automatically; the game application can be reinstalled separately.
- It does not guarantee that every title accepts a save from another console or another regional release.
- It does not remove the need to sign in to the account associated with the save when the console requires it.
Use PlayStation Plus cloud storage for PS4 and PS5 saves
PlayStation Plus cloud storage is the supported route for PS5-format saved data and an additional off-console copy for PS4 saves. The membership requirement applies to the cloud feature; a local USB copy of eligible PS4 saves does not require PlayStation Plus.
Manage cloud saves on PS5
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Choose Saved Data (PS4) for a PS4-format VR game or Saved Data (PS5) for a native PS5 game.
- Use the upload, download, or synchronization controls for the selected title.
- Check the synchronization status before relying on the cloud copy as your only recent backup.
For PS4 saves being used on PS5, PlayStation states that saves upload automatically but must be manually downloaded to PS5 console storage. Automatic upload therefore does not mean that a newly configured PS5 already has the save available for play.
Cloud sync is most useful when you regularly move between consoles or want protection if a console fails. Give the upload time to complete after a session, and check the date or status shown by the console before deleting local data. If a cloud copy is older than your last session, downloading it could replace newer local progress, so verify which version is current first.
Published cloud limits
The current PlayStation support page accessed in 2026 lists 100 GB of PS5 saved data, 100 GB of PS4 saved data, and up to 1,000 PS4 saved-data files. These are the limits stated on that page; it does not display a publication date, so 2026 describes the access date rather than a claimed publication year. The page does not establish a matching file-count limit for PS5 saves.
When cloud restore is appropriate
- Use it for native PS5 VR games, because those saves cannot be copied to USB.
- Use it when you switch consoles and want an off-site copy of progress.
- Use it alongside a USB copy for important PS4 saves, giving you two independent recovery paths.
- Download the save before launching the game if the console reports that only local data is available.
- Confirm the game version after downloading; a PS4 save belongs in the PS4 save area, not the PS5 save area.
Create a full backup of a PS4 console
A full PS4 backup is useful when you want more than individual VR saves. Sony’s tool can include games and apps, saved data, screenshots, video clips, and settings. It is broader than a selective save copy, but restoration has a much greater impact.
Prepare the external drive
- Use a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT.
- Ensure the drive has at least twice the storage space of the backup file.
- Do not use a drive configured as USB extended storage for this full-backup workflow.
Run the backup
- Connect the prepared USB drive to the PS4.
- Open Settings > System > Back Up and Restore > Back Up.
- Select the content categories to include and start the operation.
- Keep the console powered on and do not disconnect the drive while the backup is running.
Because the backup can include captures and applications as well as saves, its size can be much larger than a selective save copy. Check the available space before starting and leave the console undisturbed until the process reports completion.

Understand the restore warning
Restoring is not a selective “bring back this one save” operation. Sony warns: “When restoring data, your PS4 console erases all data saved on your console.” The erase occurs even if the restore is canceled. Copy anything currently on the destination PS4 that you may still need before starting a restore.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Choose a full backup when you are replacing or resetting a PS4 and need its settings, captures, applications, and saves together. Choose a selective USB save copy when you only need to recover a particular game’s progress and do not want to overwrite the rest of the console.
Back up installed VR games separately from saves
An installed game is not the same as its saved data. A USB extended-storage drive can hold game applications and add-ons, which can save you from downloading large installation packages again. It cannot hold PS4 application saved data, so moving a game to extended storage does not protect progress.
PS5 games stored on USB extended storage must be copied back to console storage or compatible M.2 storage before they can be played. Treat the extended drive as an installation library, not as a save-backup device.
For a digital purchase, sign in to the account that owns the game and download the title again from the console’s game library. Redownloading restores the application files only. Your progress returns only when you separately restore the correct PS4 or PS5 save.
This separation also helps when planning a console replacement. You can redownload a digital title after signing in, restore its save from the matching USB or cloud location, and use extended storage only to reduce the time spent reinstalling applications. None of those installation steps changes the save format.
Restore a VR library after replacing a console
Moving to another PS4
- Sign in to the account associated with the saved data.
- For a selective copy, connect the USB drive and open Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data on USB Storage Device > Copy to System Storage.
- For a complete replacement, use Settings > System > Back Up and Restore > Restore PS4 and confirm that the destination console can be erased.
- Reinstall or redownload the VR game if it is not present, then launch it only after the save is back on system storage.
Moving PS4-format data to PS5
- Install the PS4-format VR game on the PS5.
- Copy the save from USB using Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS4) > Copy or Delete from USB Drive, or download it from PlayStation Plus cloud storage.
- Confirm that the game is running its PS4 version before expecting a PS4 save to appear.
- If the title has a separate PS5 release, follow that game’s own transfer process instead of assuming the PS4 save will be recognized.
Do not delete the original PS4 save until the replacement console has loaded the game and displayed the expected progress. A successful file copy does not prove that a separate PS5 release supports that save.

Restoring a native PS5 VR game
Download the PS5 game again if necessary, then use PlayStation Plus cloud storage from Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5). USB restore menus for PS4 data do not apply to a PS5-format save.

The cloud save is older than expected
Check the last synchronization status before downloading. If the newest progress exists only on the old console, keep that console and its local data intact until you have created and verified a current backup.
A practical backup routine for VR players
- Record whether each title is PS4-format or PS5-format before changing consoles.
- For PS4-format saves, make a selective USB copy of important progress.
- For PS5-format saves, keep PlayStation Plus cloud synchronization enabled and verify its status.
- Use a full PS4 backup only when you need the console’s broader contents and accept the erase-on-restore behavior.
- Use USB extended storage only for installed games and add-ons.
- Keep a separate note of digital purchases and the account that owns them so applications can be redownloaded.
- Before deleting an old console or save, test restoration of one less-critical title on the replacement console.
- Maintain two copies of irreplaceable PS4 progress when possible: one selective USB copy and one cloud copy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I back up a PS VR2 save to a USB drive?
No. PS VR2 games use the PS5 platform, and Sony does not provide USB copying for PS5-format saved data. Use PlayStation Plus cloud storage.
Can I copy an original PS VR save to USB?
Usually, if the game is using the PS4 format. On PS4, use Application Saved Data Management. On PS5, use the Saved Data (PS4) menu. Use a normal compatible USB storage device, not one configured as extended storage.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is PlayStation Plus required for every backup?
No. A local USB copy of eligible PS4 saves does not require PlayStation Plus. PlayStation Plus is required for cloud storage, including the cloud route for PS5 saves.
Does USB extended storage back up my game progress?
No. Extended storage holds installed applications and add-ons. PS4 application saved data must be copied separately, and PS5 saved data must use cloud storage.
Will redownloading a digital VR game restore my save?
No. Redownloading restores the purchased application. Restore the matching PS4 or PS5 save separately from USB or PlayStation Plus cloud storage.
Can a PS4 save automatically work in a PS5 remake?
Not necessarily. There is no universal transfer rule for separate PS5 releases. Check the individual game’s transfer instructions before deleting the original save.
Recommended Free Tools
What does a full PS4 restore do?
It restores the backed-up console content, but Sony warns that the PS4 erases all data currently saved on the destination console, even if the restore is canceled.
How much PlayStation Plus save storage is listed?
The current support page lists 100 GB for PS5 saved data, 100 GB for PS4 saved data, and up to 1,000 PS4 saved-data files. It does not list a matching file-count limit for PS5 saves.
The Bottom Line
Identify the game’s PS4 or PS5 format first. Copy eligible PS4 saves to a normal USB drive, use PlayStation Plus cloud storage for PS4 or PS5 saves, and reserve USB extended storage for installed applications and add-ons. Use a full PS4 backup only when you need broader console coverage and are prepared for a restore to erase the destination console’s current data.
