Back up your progress before a shutdown by first finding where the game stores it, then using a backup method that creates a copy you can still restore. A console save, a platform cloud save, and progression held on a publisher’s servers are different data. An account or game library remaining available after a service closes does not prove that its progress can be exported.
Identify the exact game, console, region, account and closing service. Then check the game publisher’s closure notice and save/transfer documentation. The procedures below cover current Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 guidance; do not apply them automatically to another platform or an unnamed game.
Find out where your progress is stored
Before copying anything, determine which of these layers contains the progress you care about:

Make a short inventory for every important title:
- Game name, edition, region and version.
- Console model and the user profile that owns the save.
- Platform account and publisher account used to sign in.
- Whether the game works offline and whether the valuable progress is visible offline.
- The announced shutdown date, affected regions and any stated export deadline.
Also note whether you play more than one edition, such as a PS4 version on a PS5, or more than one regional release. A save can be associated with a particular product version, user and region. Do not assume that a similarly named remaster, disc edition or account on another region will read it.

If progress is server-bound, a console or platform backup may preserve only local settings or offline saves, not your online character or inventory. Look for an official closure FAQ, save-transfer tool, account-export option or statement that no export will be offered. If the notice does not identify the data architecture, ask the publisher specifically whether the item is stored locally, in platform cloud storage or on its own servers.
Use a backup that matches your goal
Compare each available route on six questions: does it make an independent copy or move the only copy; does it require an active subscription; does this particular game support it; where is the resulting data stored; can it be restored after the closure; and is it a whole-system or per-game operation?

A cloud upload is useful for recovery, but it may not meet the goal of keeping an offline archive after a service closes. Where a platform permits an independent copy, keep it in addition to the cloud copy. Treat a transfer that deletes the source as a one-way migration, even if the destination is another console you own.
Back up compatible Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 saves
Nintendo’s current guidance says Save Data Cloud backup requires Nintendo Switch Online and works with most, but not all, games. Eligibility is game-specific. A membership by itself does not prove that a particular save is protected.
Check and create a cloud backup from the game icon
- On the HOME Menu, highlight the game.
- Open the software menu and select Save Data Cloud.
- Choose the relevant user.
- Select Back Up Save Data and wait for the completion message.
If the menu says the software does not support Save Data Cloud, that title cannot use this route. Do not keep retrying; use the game’s documented transfer or export option instead. Check every user profile separately when a console has multiple players, because the save belongs to the relevant user rather than simply to the installed game.
Back up from System Settings
- Open System Settings.
- Select Data Management, then Save Data Cloud.
- Choose the user and game.
- Select the backup command and confirm that the upload completes.
Automatic backup is enabled for compatible software when a user becomes a Nintendo Switch Online member, and settings can be adjusted per game and user. Open the game’s cloud entry and check its last-backup status rather than relying on the automatic setting. Run a manual backup after the final session, especially if automatic backup was disabled, the console was offline, or the game displayed a sync conflict.
Know the subscription limitation
Nintendo’s current FAQ says that when a Nintendo Switch Online membership expires, you cannot access Save Data Cloud backups. Nintendo says users who resubscribe within 180 days can access their previous backups. The guidance does not display a publication year; treat 180 days as the current rule accessed on October 13, 2026, not a permanent guarantee. If the closure is near, do not let a subscription lapse while you are still trying to recover a save. Keep the Nintendo Account credentials and the relevant user profile intact; a different account will not provide access to that user’s cloud entries.

Do not treat a nearby-console transfer as a backup
Switch and Switch 2 can transfer save data directly to a nearby console without Nintendo Switch Online. Both consoles must be online and close to each other, and the same Nintendo Account must be linked to the corresponding users. Have both systems charged or connected to power and avoid interrupting the transfer.
- On the source console, open System Settings.
- Choose Data Management, then Transfer Your Save Data.
- Select Send Save Data to Another Console.
- Complete the receiving-console prompts and verify the save on the destination system.
This is a migration, not a duplicate. Nintendo warns: “This does not create a copy of your save data. Once sent, the save data file will be deleted from the source system.” The receiving console can also overwrite an existing save, and Nintendo says overwritten data cannot be recovered. Keep the source console untouched until you have opened the game and confirmed the transferred progress. If you need a long-term duplicate, this route alone is the wrong choice.
Nintendo also states: “Local save data backups are not currently supported on Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch.” A microSD card or USB drive therefore does not provide a supported local save backup for these systems. Game installation data on removable storage should not be confused with save data.
Back up PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 saves
PlayStation Plus members can upload and download PS5 and PS4 saved data through cloud storage. PlayStation’s current storage guidance lists up to 100 GB of PS5 saved data, up to 100 GB of PS4 saved data, and a limit of 1,000 PS4 saved-data files. These are platform limits shown on the current support page, whose publication year is not stated. A limit on the platform cloud does not indicate that a publisher’s online inventory is included.

- Open Settings.
- Select Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Choose Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4).
- For PS5 games, open Sync Saved Data and select Auto-Sync Saved Data.
- For PS4 games, select Auto-Upload.
- Use the manual upload or download controls for each important title, then check the displayed sync status.
Run a manual upload after your final play session and verify the timestamp or status for each title. Cloud storage is tied to the platform account and is not the same as a publisher’s server-side progression. If more than one console is using the account, identify which local version is newest before choosing upload or download; restoring an older cloud file can overwrite newer local progress.
Copy a PS4 save to a USB drive
PlayStation identifies PS4 saved data as available both in cloud storage and on a USB drive. To export a PS4 save while using a PS5:
- Connect a commercially available USB drive formatted as FAT or exFAT. PlayStation warns that not every device works.
- Open Settings.
- Select Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Choose Saved Data (PS4).
- Select Upload or Delete from Console Storage, then Copy to USB Drive.
- Select the game and save files, and start the copy.
Afterward, safely disconnect the drive and keep it separate from the console. If the console rejects it, recheck the format and try a different compatible drive rather than assuming the save is corrupt. Label the drive with the console, account, game and date, and avoid formatting it later for another purpose. A USB copy is an archive only if it remains readable and you retain a console and account capable of restoring it.

Do not export a PS5 save to a generic USB drive
The same PlayStation storage table identifies PS5 saved data as cloud-storage-only. USB extended storage for installed games is a separate feature and does not turn into PS5 save export. Do not promise a USB backup for a PS5 save; use PlayStation cloud storage or a game-specific export if the publisher provides one. Copying the game installation itself does not copy the saved data.
PC, handheld and other platforms require game-specific verification
Do not assume that a cloud-save toggle means you possess an exportable file. For a PC or other platform, check all four places:
- The game’s install and save directories, using the publisher’s documentation rather than deleting or editing files at random.
- The platform’s cloud-save settings and conflict-resolution messages.
- The publisher’s account, closure and data-export documentation.
- Whether the save is account-bound, encrypted, tied to a device, or stored entirely on the game server.
Official support pages for Steam and Xbox did not provide readable material for the guidance reviewed here, so no platform-specific save behavior is established in this article. Obtain current instructions for the exact game and platform before giving a shutdown deadline to another player. A visible local file is not proof that the game can restore it, and a cloud icon is not proof that the file is downloadable or independent of the account.
Verify the backup before the service closes
A completed upload or copy is not enough. Verification should answer whether the data can actually be restored.
- Record the game, user, region, save-slot name and backup date.
- Close the game normally so its latest save is flushed before copying.
- Check the platform’s last-upload time or the USB copy result.
- Where possible, test on a second console or user profile without overwriting the original. For a transfer that deletes the source, verify the destination before disposing of or resetting the source console.
- Keep the account email, password-recovery method, two-factor device and publisher account details current.
- Store an offline copy separately when the platform permits one, and label the drive with the console, game and date.
Never overwrite a known-good save during a restore attempt. Preserve the original cloud entry or USB copy until the replacement is confirmed to load the expected progress. Take a screenshot of the successful in-game load and the backup timestamp if you need a record for support; screenshots document progress but do not replace the save file.

Shutdown-day checklist
- Read the publisher’s closure notice for the exact region and deadline.
- Finish any final session early enough to upload or copy the newest save.
- Capture screenshots or records of important server-side items if no export exists; these may document what was lost but will not recreate the data.
- Confirm that the platform account and publisher account still authenticate.
- Download cloud saves or renew the required membership before access ends.
- Do not reset, sell or transfer the source console until every destination copy has been tested.
- After closure, launch the game offline and confirm which progress remains available.
If the publisher announces a separate export deadline earlier than the server shutdown, follow the earlier date. Save the notice and any instructions locally in case the support page changes. Do not wait until the final hours: account recovery, a failed upload, a full cloud quota or an incompatible USB drive can each require time to resolve.
Common failure cases
The game says cloud backup is unsupported
On Switch or Switch 2, that message means Save Data Cloud is unavailable for that title. Check whether the publisher offers a separate transfer or export. A subscription cannot override a game-level restriction.

The cloud save is older than the local save
Stop before choosing a conflict option. Open the game on the console that contains the newest progress, save normally, then perform a manual upload. Keep the older cloud version until the newer upload is visible and dated correctly.
A transfer removed the source save
That behavior is expected for Nintendo’s nearby-console transfer: it moves rather than copies. Check the receiving console and user first. Do not start another transfer or overwrite the destination while diagnosing the result.
A USB drive is rejected
For a PS4 save export, confirm FAT or exFAT formatting, sufficient free space and a direct connection. PlayStation warns that compatibility varies. USB extended storage intended for games is not evidence that PS5 saved-data export is supported.
The account or library remains, but online progress is gone
An account and game entitlement can survive while a publisher disables the servers that held characters, inventories or unlocks. Only an official export, migration or archival statement can establish that this data remains recoverable.
The backup completed, but the restored game starts with no progress
Confirm that you restored the same user, account, game edition and region used to create the save. Check whether the missing items were server-side rather than part of the console save. Do not delete the original cloud entry or USB archive while contacting platform or publisher support.

Can I copy a PS5 save to a USB drive?
PlayStation’s storage table lists PS5 saved data as cloud-storage-only. USB save copying is documented for PS4 saved data, not PS5 saved data.
Does a platform cloud save preserve a game’s online character or inventory?
Not necessarily. Platform cloud storage generally covers console save files, while characters, inventories and other progression may be held on publisher servers. Check the exact game’s closure and export documentation.
Does Nintendo’s nearby-console transfer make a second backup?

How much PlayStation cloud storage is available for saves?
The current PlayStation support guidance lists up to 100 GB for PS5 saved data, 100 GB for PS4 saved data and up to 1,000 PS4 saved-data files. These limits apply to platform saved data, not necessarily publisher-hosted progression.
What USB drive should I buy for a PS4 save export?

Back up early, verify the restore path, and keep the original until the copy works. Switch and Switch 2 require Nintendo Switch Online for compatible cloud backups and do not support local save backups; nearby-console transfer moves rather than copies. PlayStation Plus supports PS5 and PS4 cloud saves, while USB export is documented for PS4 saves, not PS5 saves. For server-held progression, only the game publisher can confirm whether an export or archival option exists.
