Back up Xbox captures from the console’s Captures app before the 90-day deadline. Xbox says captures stored on the Xbox network are deleted after 90 days. From My games & apps > See all > Apps > Captures, you can manage existing clips, bulk upload them to OneDrive or external storage, and configure future captures to back up automatically to OneDrive.
The deletion rule applies to the copy stored on the Xbox network—not automatically to copies already saved in OneDrive or on an external device. Verify that each important capture appears in your chosen destination before its deletion date.
What Xbox’s 90-day deletion rule means
Xbox announced on September 27, 2023 that “Game captures stored on the Xbox network will be deleted after 90 days.” The statement applies specifically to captures held on the Xbox network. It does not say that a copy in OneDrive or on external storage will be deleted after 90 days.

Xbox says the console’s Captures app identifies Xbox network captures that are marked for upcoming deletion. That notice is your prompt to transfer anything you want to keep. Do not treat the 90-day period as a general expiration date for every copy of a clip; it is a retention period for the Xbox-network copy.

The announcement does not describe a restoration procedure after an Xbox-network capture has been deleted. The safe approach is to create and verify another copy before the deadline rather than assume the deleted item can be recovered.

Choose where your backup will live
Xbox identifies two backup destinations in its guidance: OneDrive and an external storage device. The practical choice is whether you prefer a cloud copy that can be configured for automatic backups or a local copy on a physical device.

|---|---|---|---|
| OneDrive | Existing captures can be uploaded, and future captures can be set to back up automatically. | External storage | Xbox names an external storage device as a destination for moving or backing up captures. | Players who prefer a local physical copy. | Confirm that the console recognizes the device and that the transferred capture is present. Xbox’s cited announcement does not specify capacity, connector, format, or a particular model. |
Do not select an external drive based on an assumed capacity, USB standard, file system, or model requirement from this article. Those technical requirements are not established by the cited Xbox announcement. Check the current instructions shown by your console for the device you intend to use.
Find captures that are approaching deletion
- Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide.
- Open My games & apps.
- Select See all.
- Open Apps.
- Launch Captures.
Xbox provides this path in its announcement. In the Captures app, look for Xbox network captures marked for upcoming deletion. Start with those items, then review older clips you know you want to retain so that you do not overlook a favorite that is not immediately visible in the warning list.
If you use more than one Xbox console, perform this check on the console where the captures are available and signed in to the account that owns them. The goal is to act on the Xbox-network copy before its displayed deadline.

Back up existing Xbox captures to OneDrive
OneDrive is the cloud option named by Xbox. The Captures app can upload individual captures or perform a bulk upload, so you can handle a small selection or clear a larger set of clips before the 90-day cutoff.
- Open My games & apps > See all > Apps > Captures.
- Use the Captures app’s Tell me more button to begin the backup guidance and controls.
- Review the captures stored on the Xbox network, paying particular attention to any marked for upcoming deletion.
- Select the clips you want to preserve. Use the app’s bulk-selection or bulk-upload controls when you need to move several captures at once.
- Choose OneDrive as the destination and start the upload.
- Wait for the transfer to finish, then check OneDrive for the uploaded captures before deleting or ignoring the Xbox-network copies.
The announcement does not prescribe a folder name or a separate naming convention. If you organize clips in OneDrive, use a system you can recognize later—for example, folders by game or month—without moving a capture until you have confirmed that it is present.
How to verify a OneDrive upload
- Sign in to the OneDrive account associated with the upload.
- Locate the capture and confirm that it appears as an uploaded item rather than only as a local listing in the console app.
- Check several files when you used a bulk upload, including the clips you consider irreplaceable.
- Keep the Xbox-network copy until the OneDrive copy is visible; the Xbox guidance does not state that an incomplete upload protects the original.
Xbox also says captures saved to OneDrive can be edited on a PC with Microsoft Clipchamp. That makes OneDrive useful when your next step is trimming or assembling clips on a computer, but editing is separate from the backup itself.
Set future captures to back up automatically to OneDrive
Xbox says the Captures app can be configured so future captures are backed up automatically to OneDrive. This setting is for new captures; it should not be treated as a transfer of older Xbox-network clips that are already waiting for deletion.
- Open My games & apps > See all > Apps > Captures.
- Select the Captures app’s Tell me more option to reach the backup controls.
- Choose the option to configure automatic backup for future captures.
- Select OneDrive when prompted as the backup destination.
- Create a short test capture after enabling the setting.
- Check OneDrive for that test item so you know the automatic workflow is producing a copy before you rely on it for important clips.
Automatic backup reduces the chance that a newly created clip will remain only on the Xbox network, but it does not remove the need to review older captures. Handle existing clips with the manual upload process above and continue checking that new uploads arrive in OneDrive.

Back up existing captures to external storage
Xbox also lists an external storage device as a destination for captures. The announcement does not provide a universal drive specification, so the exact device setup must be determined from the prompts and requirements shown by your current console.

- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Connect the external storage device to the Xbox console.
- Open My games & apps > See all > Apps > Captures.
- Select Tell me more to open the Captures app’s backup and management controls.
- Select the Xbox-network captures you want to preserve, using bulk selection if appropriate.
- Choose the external-storage destination and start the move or upload offered by the app.
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Use the destination device or the console’s capture-management view to confirm that the transferred files are present.
Because Xbox’s cited announcement does not state drive capacity, connector, format, or model requirements, do not infer that a particular external drive will work from its size or connector alone. If the console does not recognize a device, consult the current Xbox support guidance or the message displayed by the console rather than risking an unverified purchase or reformat.
What “move” means for your deadline plan
The Captures app describes moving and managing captures, while Xbox identifies external storage as a backup destination. Treat the operation as incomplete until the destination contains the capture you intend to keep. A transfer that is still running, interrupted, or not visible on the device has not given you a verified second copy.
Use a deadline-first workflow
When the Captures app marks an item for upcoming deletion, process it in this order:
- Prioritize irreplaceable clips. Start with clips you cannot recreate, such as tournament moments, achievement footage, or personal highlights.
- Select a destination. Choose OneDrive if you want the cloud option and automatic backups for future captures; choose external storage if you want a local physical copy.
- Transfer in batches. Use the Captures app’s bulk-upload or bulk-management controls instead of handling every clip individually when a large set is at risk.
- Verify the destination. Confirm that the uploaded or transferred files are visible in OneDrive or on the external device.
- Continue with the next batch. Do not assume that starting one upload protects the remaining captures.
If the deadline is close, avoid spending time reorganizing files before you have a verified copy. Transfer first; organize the backup afterward.

Confusing Xbox-network storage with your backup
A capture visible in the Captures app may still be only on the Xbox network. The 90-day policy concerns that location. A clip is not safely backed up merely because it appears in the console list; verify it in OneDrive or on the external device.
Assuming OneDrive automation covers old clips
Xbox describes automatic backup for future captures. Existing clips marked for deletion still require a deliberate upload or move from the Captures app.

Waiting until after the deletion date
The announcement gives no restoration procedure for an Xbox-network capture after deletion. Work before the date shown in the Captures app instead of planning to recover the item later.

The cited Xbox guidance names external storage but does not establish a required capacity, connector, format, or model. Confirm current console requirements before selecting hardware.
Leaving without checking the destination
A completed-looking progress screen is not the same as a verified copy. Open the destination and confirm that important captures are listed before you consider the backup complete.
Forgetting which account or destination was used
Record the OneDrive account or the physical device where you saved the files. This simple note prevents a later search from becoming a second deadline problem.
Edit OneDrive captures on a PC
Xbox says captures saved to OneDrive can be edited on a PC with Microsoft Clipchamp. A practical workflow is to complete the console upload first, verify the files in OneDrive, and then open them on the PC for trimming or other edits. Keep the original uploaded capture until you are satisfied with the edited version; the Xbox announcement establishes the editing option but does not describe a recovery process for deleted Xbox-network originals.

- Have you opened My games & apps > See all > Apps > Captures?
- Did you review captures marked for upcoming Xbox-network deletion?
- Did you choose OneDrive or an external storage device?
- For existing captures, did you start a manual upload or transfer?
- For future captures, if you chose OneDrive, did you enable automatic backup?
- Can you see the important files in the selected destination?
- If you used external storage, did you confirm the files are present on that device?
- Have you avoided relying on an undocumented restoration method?
Once the destination contains the clips you want to keep, the Xbox-network copy can expire without being your only copy. The key distinction is location: Xbox’s 90-day statement is about captures stored on the Xbox network, while your verified OneDrive or external-storage copy is the backup you control.
