Back up the game while it is still installed, save the backup somewhere separate from your Steam library, and test it before uninstalling. In Steam, open the game’s Properties, go to the installed-files area, choose the backup command, select a destination, and let Steam create the archive. Then copy your saves, configuration, and custom content separately because Steam’s game-file backup may omit them.
A backup preserves files; it does not guarantee that Steam will continue to offer a download, that a future restore will install successfully, or that the game will remain playable after removal. Steam describes its content as licensed rather than sold, so treat continued access as a game-specific question.
What a Steam backup can—and cannot—preserve
Steam’s backup feature creates a separate copy of eligible game files. It is useful when you want the installed data available after a title leaves the store or after you remove it from your gaming drive. The copy is not a new license and does not change the account, activation, digital-rights-management, or online-service requirements attached to the game.
The feature is designed for games that were fully downloaded, installed, and patched through Steam. Games that use third-party installers or downloaders may not work with it; Steam specifically gives many multiplayer and free-to-play games as examples. Check the individual title rather than assuming every game in your Library is compatible. See Steam’s Using the Steam Backup Feature FAQ for the current guidance.

- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.

- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
The archive is also not a complete snapshot of everything you may care about. For Valve games, Steam says the backup does not include saves, custom multiplayer maps, or configuration files. For games from other developers, save locations differ because the developer decides where those files are stored. Plan a second, manual copy for anything outside the installed game files.
Prepare before starting the backup
Finish the installation
Open Steam and confirm the game is completely downloaded and patched. If an update is waiting, allow it to finish before creating the backup. A backup made while files are still changing is harder to verify and may not represent the version you intend to keep.
Decide what must survive
Write down the items you want to retain before you begin:
- The installed game files.
- Local save files and profiles.
- Graphics, control, and other configuration files.
- Custom maps, mods, or other user-created content, where the game permits them.
- Any installer, account, or activation information the game’s documentation says is required later.
Steam’s archive handles the first item when the title is eligible. The remaining items normally require a separate copy.

Choose a destination with room and separation
The destination must have enough free space for the game backup and any additional files you intend to retain. Steam does not specify a required drive type, speed, or capacity. A portable external SSD is one practical option, but it is simply storage for the copy; it does not provide future Steam access or guarantee compatibility.
| Destination choice | When it is useful | Decision point |
|---|---|---|
| Another internal drive | Convenient when the computer has a second drive with adequate free space. | Prefer a location separate from the drive that normally holds the Steam library. |
| Portable external drive | Easy to disconnect, label, and keep with other archives. | Check available capacity and keep the drive and its cable in a place you can find later. |
| The same Steam-library drive | Useful only as a temporary staging location. | It is not a durable second copy if that drive fails or is reformatted; move or copy the backup afterward. |
Use Steam’s built-in backup workflow
The labels can change slightly between Steam client versions, but the workflow is the same. Perform these steps while the game is still installed.
- Open the Library. Find the game you want to preserve.
- Open Properties. Use the game’s context menu or its Library page to open Properties.
- Open the installed-files area. Select the section Steam uses to manage the game’s local installation. Look for the backup command there.
- Start the backup. Choose the backup option and select a destination folder with enough free space.
- Let Steam finish. Do not uninstall the game, interrupt Steam, or move files while the backup is being created. Wait for the client to report completion.
- Open the destination folder. Steam provides an option to open the folder when the operation finishes. Use it to confirm where the backup was written.
- Move or copy the backup to its long-term location. If the destination was only a staging folder, place the completed files on the separate drive or other storage you selected.
- Record what the copy is. Give the folder a useful name that includes the game and, if important, the version or backup date. Keep the original Steam-generated files together.
Steam’s instructions and restore guidance are in its official backup FAQ. The created files are valuable only if they can be read later, so do not treat the completion message as the final check.

Steam’s game-file archive is not a universal profile backup. Valve-game saves, custom multiplayer maps, and configuration files are specifically excluded according to Steam’s FAQ. A third-party title may store saves in a game folder, a user-profile folder, or another location chosen by its developer.

Find the correct locations
- Check the game’s official documentation for save and configuration paths.
- If the documentation is silent, consult reliable community information for that specific title and version.
- Look for folders containing save profiles, settings, screenshots, mods, or custom maps, but do not delete or alter the originals while investigating.
- Close the game before copying files that it may be writing.
- Copy the relevant folders to a clearly named location alongside, but not inside, the Steam backup archive.
Keep the original folder structure in your manual copy where possible. That makes it easier to identify where files came from if the game’s documentation later gives a restore path. Do not assume that a cloud-synchronized save, if a game offers one, replaces a local backup; the Steam backup FAQ does not promise that saves are included in the archive.
Test the backup before uninstalling
Steam explicitly recommends testing a backup because an interruption or other interference can leave a failed or incomplete copy. Test before removing the installed game, while you still have an intact source to compare against.
A practical test
- Open the destination folder and confirm that Steam created the expected backup files rather than an empty folder or a shortcut.
- Check that the folder can be opened from the drive where you intend to keep it. If the drive disconnects, reconnect it and repeat the check.
- Use Steam’s restore-backup command and point it at the copy, preferably into a spare library location or another installation you can test without sacrificing the working game.
- Allow Steam to proceed far enough to validate and begin the installation. If the client reports missing or unreadable files, stop and recreate the backup while the original installation is still available.
- For a title that can launch offline, start the restored installation and confirm that it reaches the main menu. For an online-dependent game, also note that a successful file restore cannot prove that servers, account checks, or other services will still operate later.
A completed progress indicator is not proof of a usable future restore. Keep the original installation until the backup and any separately copied saves have passed your checks.
Steam backup versus copying the full installation
Steam’s built-in archive is the simplest supported route when the game is eligible. Another approach is preserving a full copy of the library installation with ordinary file-management tools. The second approach can retain files that Steam’s archive does not, but Steam may not automatically recognize that copy as installed.

| Approach | Strength | Limitation | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam built-in backup | Uses Steam’s own backup and restore workflow. | Eligibility is limited; saves, custom maps, and configuration files may be absent. | Eligible games that you want to restore through the Steam client. |
| Full library-installation copy | Preserves the installed file tree as it exists on the drive, including files you deliberately keep in that tree. | It is not the same as a Steam backup and may require Steam to rediscover or validate the files later. | A supplementary archive or a fallback when the built-in feature is unavailable. |
If you use the full-copy method, still make a separate copy of saves and settings that live outside the installation directory. A folder copy also does not preserve a license or guarantee that a removed game will authenticate.
How to restore the Steam backup
When you need the archived files, install Steam and sign in to the account associated with the game. In the Steam client, choose the command for restoring a backup, point it to the backup files, and follow the installation steps shown by the client. Steam’s backup FAQ describes this sequence and warns that special characters in the Steam installation path can prevent a restore from completing.
Restore checklist
- Use the account that previously held the game license.
- Connect the drive containing the backup before opening the restore command.
- Select the correct backup folder, not merely its parent drive.
- Choose an installation library with enough free space.
- Keep the path simple if Steam reports a path-related failure; remove special characters from the Steam installation path where practical and retry.
- After installation, copy your separately preserved saves and configuration files into the locations specified by the game’s documentation.
A restore can put files back on your computer, but it cannot supply a missing account entitlement, bypass a game’s activation system, or recreate an online service that no longer operates.
When Steam says the game is uninstalled even though files remain
Steam Support treats this as a file-recognition problem, not as a substitute for making a backup. Its article Installed games are appearing as uninstalled says you can start an installation so Steam detects existing files, or add an existing library folder through Storage Manager.
Best Value
- NEARLY 2X FASTER THAN OUR PREVIOUS GENERATION(8) – move 1,000 high-res photos in under 60 seconds(6) with up to 2000MB/s transfer speeds(2).
- IP65 RATING AND UP TO 3M DROP PROTECTION(3) – protects against spills and drops.
- POCKET-SIZED – fits easily in pockets and small bags.
- SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
- 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.
Use the detection route
- Confirm that the game files are still in the library folder Steam is using.
- Start the game’s installation in Steam and select the library location containing those files.
- Allow Steam to check the existing data instead of assuming that the title must be downloaded from scratch.
Add the library folder
If the files are on a different library location, open Steam’s Storage Manager and add the existing library folder. Once Steam can see that library, try the installation or verification flow again.
These steps may recover recognition of files that remain in the correct location. They do not create a separate copy, do not protect against drive failure, and do not replace the tested-backup workflow described above.
What removal from Steam actually means
Do not describe a backup as a way to defeat delisting. Valve’s Steam Subscriber Agreement describes Steam content as licensed rather than sold and says the license confers no ownership.
The available official sources do not establish one universal rule for every removed title. Whether a particular game can still be downloaded, installed, activated, or played may depend on the game, your account, its digital-rights-management system, and its online services. Check the title’s own announcements and support information for those conditions. Preserve the files because they may be useful, but do not treat them as a promise of perpetual access.
Troubleshoot common backup failures
The backup option is missing
- Confirm that you opened the game’s installed-files section rather than a general Properties page.
- Check whether the game relies on a third-party installer or downloader; Steam says those titles may not be compatible with the backup feature.
- Make sure the game is fully installed and patched.
The backup stops or reports an error
- Check free space on the destination and choose a different folder if necessary.
- Make sure the destination drive remains connected and writable.
- Close software that could interfere with files and retry while the original game is still installed.
- Delete only the failed copy, then create a fresh backup rather than trusting a partial archive.
The restore cannot find the files
- Point Steam directly to the folder containing the backup files.
- Confirm that the external drive is connected and mounted under the same operating system session.
- Review the Steam installation path for special characters, which Steam identifies as a possible restore problem.
- If you only copied the original library folder, use the installed-game recovery steps instead of the Steam-backup restore command.
The game restores but saves are missing
That is expected when the saves were outside the Steam archive. Locate the manual save copy and follow the game developer’s documented restore path. Do not overwrite a newly created save until you have preserved it as well.
Quick Recap
Final pre-removal checklist
- The game is fully downloaded, installed, and patched.
- You checked whether the title is eligible for Steam’s backup feature.
- You created the backup from the game’s Properties and installed-files area.
- You moved or copied the resulting files to storage separate from the working Steam library.
- You separately copied saves, configuration files, custom maps, and other personal content.
- You tested the backup and, where practical, began a restore in a spare location.
- You recorded the Steam account and any game-specific activation or online-service dependencies.
- You understand that retained files do not guarantee a future download, license, activation, or playable service.
