Save anything you would hate to lose as a separate, verified copy outside the game or platform service. A screenshot, temporary replay buffer, exported video, game save, mod, and game installation are different kinds of files; backing up one does not necessarily preserve the others. If a game is about to close, shut down its servers, or disappear from a store, prioritize files that exist only locally or on a service that may no longer be available.
First identify what you need to preserve
Make an inventory before copying files. The right method depends on what the item is and where it lives:
- Screenshots and captures: still images or videos created by the console or platform capture feature.
- Temporary replay footage: rolling background recording that may be overwritten as new footage is captured.
- Saved clips or replay files: moments you explicitly saved; these may be editable platform projects or game-specific replay data rather than ordinary video.
- Save data: progress and settings, which may be local, cloud-synced, or both.
- Custom content: mods, maps, configuration files, and other additions that may not be included with saves.
- Installation files: the game itself. Keeping an installer or backup does not necessarily keep your progress, captures, or custom files.
Cloud sync is not automatically a complete archive. Check the exact game and file types covered, then make an independent copy of irreplaceable items.
Save temporary footage before it rolls over
Steam Game Recording
Steam Game Recording offers background and on-demand recording. Background footage is temporary: it can be overwritten as the allocated disk space fills. When a moment matters, use the timeline’s clip controls to save it. Steam says saved clips are stored on the PC, and an edited clip can be exported as an MP4. Check the recording settings for the storage location and maximum space. Steam’s guide explains the modes and clip controls: Steam Game Recording.

Saving a clip is only the first step. If you need an archive that will remain usable if Steam or the game becomes unavailable, export the clip and copy the resulting file to a destination outside the game and platform.
PlayStation 5
PS5 capture controls can record up to one hour or save recent gameplay ranging from 15 seconds to one hour. Some content is blocked from capture, and the capture settings include video format and resolution. For long-term preservation, use the current options in Media Gallery to share or export the item, then verify that a usable copy exists outside the console. Sony’s guide documents capture creation and settings, but not a universal export path for every situation: PlayStation 5 captures and gameplay recording.

Copy captures before a platform retention deadline
Xbox captures
In a September 27, 2023 announcement, Xbox Wire said captures stored on the Xbox network would be deleted after 90 days. That is a dated statement of the policy at that time, not a guarantee about every region, account, or current policy. Check the Captures app for the status of your items and current options. The announcement describes backing up wanted captures to OneDrive or external storage and gives this console route: Xbox button > My games & apps > See all > Apps > Captures. From Captures, you can manage items, bulk-upload them, and set future captures to back up automatically to OneDrive. See Xbox Wire’s September 27, 2023 capture-storage announcement.

Make sure the file has reached a destination you can access independently, especially if the game, account, or service may be discontinued.

Steam screenshots
Steam uses the Steam Overlay and Screenshot Uploader for screenshots; F12 is the default screenshot hotkey. The uploader opens after you quit a game in which you took screenshots, and you can also open it from View > Screenshots or through the overlay. Uploading or viewing screenshots there is not the same as creating an independent backup. Copy the original screenshot files to separate storage if you want to retain them beyond the platform service. Steam’s instructions are at Steam Support: screenshots.
Back up saves, custom files, and installations separately
Steam Cloud is game-specific
Developers choose which user files a game synchronizes with Steam Cloud. Check the game’s Steam store page for its cloud indicator, and do not assume that Cloud includes every save, screenshot, replay, or other game-related file. If a game does not sync or a sync fails, the latest files may remain only on the local device; Steam warns that it may not be able to recover lost data. See Steamworks: Steam Cloud.

A game backup may not include your progress
Steam’s Backup Feature preserves game files, but titles that depend on third-party installers or downloaders may not work with it. Valve notes that backups of its own games omit saved games, custom maps, and configuration files, and its instructions identify additional folders to copy for custom content. For third-party games, save-file locations vary. Look up the specific game’s file locations and copy saves and custom content separately from the installation. See Steam Support: backing up and restoring games.

Nintendo Switch cloud saves are not capture archives
Nintendo Switch Save Data Cloud applies to compatible games’ save data, not general screenshots or replay archiving. It requires Nintendo Switch Online, and compatibility is game-specific; check the game’s eShop or product details, or the software’s cloud menu. Nintendo also says that after membership expires, cloud backups become inaccessible, with access returning if the user resubscribes within 180 days. This is a save-data recovery condition, not a way to preserve captures. See Nintendo Support: Save Data Cloud and Nintendo Support: missing Save Data Cloud backup.

Use a backup workflow that survives the shutdown
- Inventory your files. List screenshots, temporary footage, saved clips, game replay data, saves, mods or configuration files, and installation files. Identify whether each item is on the device, in a platform library, or on a remote service.
- Make temporary media permanent. Save rolling footage as a clip before it is overwritten. Export it to an ordinary video file, such as MP4 when the platform offers that option.
- Copy to a destination outside the service at risk. Use an external drive or a cloud account you control. For Xbox captures, Xbox Wire specifically describes OneDrive and external storage. Check device and file-transfer compatibility before choosing a drive.
- Find and copy saves and custom files separately. Use the game developer’s instructions for the correct platform and file locations. Do not infer that an installation backup or a cloud indicator covers these items.
- Verify the copy. Open the file from the destination—not just the original device—and check that images display, video plays with expected picture and audio, and the file count matches what you intended to save. Keep a second copy for anything especially valuable.
What a reliable archive should prove
A successful upload or backup indicator shows that a transfer was reported; it does not prove that every intended file was copied, that a video is playable, or that its quality is adequate. The practical test is to open the copy from its destination and inspect it. For a collection, check expected file counts and sample files from different dates or types. Keep the archive separate from the account or service whose closure prompted the backup.
