The safest way to back up an ANBERNIC handheld is to make a manual copy of the saves, save states, and game files from its microSD card before you reflash firmware, change cards, or move to another device. There is no single save folder or universal shortcut for every ANBERNIC model: the correct location depends on the handheld, operating system, emulator, and RetroArch core. First identify that software combination, then copy the relevant data while the original card remains untouched.

What you need to back up

A usable backup can include several different kinds of data. Treat them separately because they have different compatibility and recovery risks.

  • Normal in-game saves: Data written by the game itself, such as a battery save, memory-card file, or profile. AmberELEC describes these as working as they did on the original console.
  • Save states: Snapshots made by an emulator. In AmberELEC’s documented RetroArch setup, the RetroArch Quick Menu or hotkeys creates and loads them. A state can depend on the emulator core, version, settings, and the exact game file.
  • Game files: ROMs, disc images, BIOS files, patches, and related files. A settings archive does not include a complete copy of these files.
  • Configuration: Emulator options, controller mappings, playlists, and system settings. These may be stored separately from saves.
  • Identity or firmware settings: On AmberELEC, an Identity backup preserves EmulationStation settings, network details, and core configurations. It is useful during a reflash, but it is not a substitute for copying the Games partition and save data.

Back up both normal in-game saves and states if you use both. A state that fails after a core or firmware change does not make the ordinary in-game save disappear, provided you copied it separately.

  1. The exact ANBERNIC model, such as RG35XX Pro or RG552.
  2. The operating system or firmware currently installed, such as stock firmware, KNULLI, muOS, ROCKNIX, or AmberELEC.
  3. Whether the game runs through RetroArch or a standalone emulator. A single handheld can use both.

These details determine the directory names and the controls you should use. A path documented for an RG35XX Pro is not a promise about another RG35XX variant, a different firmware release, or a manually changed RetroArch directory. Likewise, an emulator’s save location can differ from RetroArch’s location on the same card.

The safest manual backup workflow

A removable-card copy is the simplest recovery method because it does not depend on cloud configuration or a network connection.

  1. Exit the game cleanly. Save from inside the game, wait for any save indicator to finish, and quit to the launcher or operating-system menu. Do not pull the card while the game is still running or writing.
  2. Prepare a compatible card reader. AmberELEC’s getting-started guidance describes connecting the stock SD card to a computer, probably with a USB adapter. Choose a reader that matches your computer’s available port and the card’s size and format.
  3. Do not format or “repair” the original card. If the computer offers to initialize, format, or scan-and-fix the card, cancel unless you have verified a separate backup and intentionally want to repair it.
  4. Copy the complete game-data area when practical. AmberELEC’s reflash procedure specifically tells users to copy the Games partition before formatting. Copying the entire partition preserves ROMs and makes it easier to locate an unusual save directory later.
  5. Copy known save and state folders separately. This gives you a small, obvious recovery set even if you do not keep a full card image. Include ordinary saves, save states, screenshots, and any emulator configuration that you need.
  6. Keep the original card unchanged. Store the copy on a computer or another supported storage device. Do not erase the source until you open the backup and confirm that expected folders and files are present.
  7. Test before a destructive change. If possible, copy one backed-up save to a spare card or a test installation and launch the matching game. Testing a normal in-game save is especially important before relying on a state after changing firmware or cores.

A spare microSD card can be a second destination when the handheld, reader, and computer support it, but the available material does not establish a universal capacity or compatibility recommendation. Use storage that your particular setup can read reliably.

Where saves are stored: documented RG35XX Pro examples

The following locations come from an independent RG35XX Pro setup guide. They are examples for that model and the listed firmware environments, not universal ANBERNIC paths. Your directories may differ if you changed settings or installed another release.

Stock firmware, RetroArch mnt/mmc/saves_RA mnt/mmc/states_RA
KNULLI userdata/saves/[console] Not stated in the guide
muOS MUOS/save/file/[core] MUOS/save/state/[core]
ROCKNIX /storage/roms/saves/ /storage/roms/savestates

In these examples, [console] and [core] represent the directory used by that installation; they are not literal folder names to type. If you cannot find a path, check the emulator’s settings or documentation rather than creating a guessed folder. RetroArch and standalone emulators can use different locations even when they launch the same game system.

Normal saves and save states are not interchangeable

Normal in-game saves

A normal save is created through the game’s own menu or automatic save system. It is generally the most portable form of progress because it follows the original game’s data format. Copy it whenever you copy the game file, and preserve the same filename relationship if the emulator expects one.

RetroArch save states

RetroArch states capture the emulator at a particular moment. AmberELEC’s getting-started documentation lists SELECT + R1 to save and SELECT + L1 to load in its documented setup. Those combinations are not universal ANBERNIC controls; another firmware, model, or key mapping may use different hotkeys. The RetroArch Quick Menu is the safer place to confirm the current commands.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

States can fail after changing a core, emulator version, BIOS, graphics setting, or game revision. Keep the ordinary in-game save even when a state is convenient, and test a restored state before deleting the original card.

Backing up before an AmberELEC reflash

AmberELEC separates its settings backup from game-data backup. Follow this order when preparing a documented AmberELEC reflash:

  1. Use AmberELEC’s Backup Identity function. It creates identity.tar.gz under /storage/roms/backup.
  2. Confirm that the archive exists and copy it to the computer with the rest of your backup.
  3. Separately copy the Games partition, including ROMs and the save and state directories. The Identity archive does not contain a complete copy of those game files.
  4. Only after both copies are safe should you format or reflash the card.
  5. Boot the newly flashed card, then restore the Games partition as directed by AmberELEC’s procedure and restore the Identity archive if you need the saved settings, network details, and core configurations.

This sequence is specific to AmberELEC. A different operating system may use another backup tool, partition layout, or restore process; use that system’s own instructions instead of applying these filenames blindly.

If a game will not save

Do not assume that a failed in-game save can be fixed with a RetroArch save state. ANBERNIC’s RG552 support article says that when game saving fails, the emulator’s own archive method cannot be used and the user should use instant archive instead. It gives F + R1 as the instant-save operation for the RG552.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That shortcut is documented for the RG552 only. It does not establish the same control on other ANBERNIC models. For another handheld, consult its exact manual or support page, confirm the model-specific recovery control, and then verify that a newly created save appears in the expected directory.

Cloud synchronization: useful, but not a replacement for a first backup

RetroArch Cloud Sync can synchronize save files, including .srm files, and save states. The documented backends include WebDAV, iCloud, and iCloud Drive, with availability varying by platform and backend. It is a synchronization system, not a guarantee that every device will merge every file safely.

Set up matching folders and sorting

Configure the same save-file and save-state directory organization on each device. RetroArch documentation warns that mismatched sorting settings can prevent correct merging. A handheld using a different core-specific or system-specific path may appear to have no saves even though the cloud contains them.

Sync one device at a time

Finish playing, close the content, and return to RetroArch’s main menu before quitting. The documentation warns that quitting while content is still running can skip the final sync. Allow one device to finish syncing before launching the same game on another device, especially if both devices might change the same file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand conflicts and deletion protection

Conflicting changes are logged and are not automatically overwritten. With Destructive Cloud Sync disabled, files that would be deleted or overwritten are backed up locally. Review those conflict or backup files before deciding which progress is authoritative; do not assume the newest timestamp always represents the intended save.

AmberELEC’s separate rclone option

AmberELEC also documents an rclone-based tool for backing up and restoring saves, states, screenshots, and device backup data. Initial cloud authorization is performed on a computer, and the guide characterizes the setup as intermediate or advanced. This is a firmware-specific option, not a built-in feature shared by every ANBERNIC handheld.

Choosing a backup method

Method Scope Advantages Main risks or effort
Manual card copy Can include the entire Games partition, saves, states, and configuration Simple, offline, and leaves an untouched source copy Requires a compatible reader and enough storage; you must identify the right folders
Identity or settings archive Firmware settings, network details, and core configuration on systems that support it Fast way to restore preferences after a reflash Does not replace a Games-partition or save backup
RetroArch Cloud Sync RetroArch save files and save states Convenient across devices and supported backends Requires matching directory organization, conflict awareness, and a completed sync
AmberELEC rclone tool Saves, states, screenshots, and device backup data Automates a broader AmberELEC cloud workflow Intermediate/advanced setup and firmware-specific authorization

For a firmware change or card replacement, use a manual copy first. Cloud sync can be an additional convenience after you have a known-good local backup.

Restoring and verifying a backup

  1. Install or prepare the target card and boot the target firmware once so it creates its expected directory structure.
  2. Close any running game and copy the game files to the target’s game partition.
  3. Place normal saves in the target emulator’s documented save directory, preserving the expected filename and extension.
  4. Copy save states only into the matching core or emulator directory. Do not assume a state from one core will load in another.
  5. Restore configuration or an AmberELEC Identity archive only through that firmware’s documented restore process.
  6. Launch one game and check its ordinary in-game save first. Then test a state if you need it.
  7. If progress is missing, stop and compare directory names, core selection, game filename, region/revision, and file extensions with the original backup. Keep the source copy untouched while troubleshooting.

Common mistakes and fixes

  • Using a universal path from a different model: Recheck the model and firmware, then use the installed emulator’s settings or documentation.
  • Backing up only save states: Copy normal in-game saves as well; states may depend on a particular core or version.
  • Assuming Identity contains games: Copy the Games partition separately, as AmberELEC’s reflash instructions require.
  • Removing the card during a write: Exit cleanly, wait for saving to finish, and only then disconnect it.
  • Quitting RetroArch with content still open: Return to the main menu so Cloud Sync has an opportunity to finish.
  • Starting two cloud sessions at once: Synchronize one device fully before using the other and inspect conflict logs.
  • Expecting a state to survive a core change: Restore and test it; retain the ordinary in-game save as the fallback.
  • Applying the RG552 shortcut elsewhere: F + R1 is documented for the RG552, not as a universal ANBERNIC command.

A practical pre-change checklist

  • Model, firmware, emulator, and RetroArch core recorded.
  • Game exited cleanly and saves finished writing.
  • Games partition copied to a computer or other separate storage.
  • Normal in-game saves copied.
  • Save states copied where they are genuinely needed.
  • Identity or configuration archive copied when supported.
  • Original card kept untouched.
  • At least one restored game tested before formatting, reflashing, or selling the old device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there one universal save folder on ANBERNIC handhelds?

No. Locations vary by model, firmware, emulator, and RetroArch core. The RG35XX Pro examples include different paths for stock firmware, KNULLI, muOS, and ROCKNIX.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I back up save states or normal saves?

Back up both if you use both. Normal in-game saves are generally safer across changes, while save states can depend on the emulator core, version, and settings.

Does an AmberELEC Identity backup include my ROMs and saves?

No. It preserves settings, network details, and core configurations in identity.tar.gz. Copy the Games partition and save folders separately.

Can I use F + R1 to save on every ANBERNIC model?

No. ANBERNIC documents that instant-archive shortcut for the RG552. Check the support documentation for your exact model.
