The right MongoDB backup or migration method depends on your topology, data size, recovery requirements and downtime budget. For a smaller deployment, mongodump creates a BSON dump and mongorestore loads it into a compatible mongod or mongos. For a larger or sharded system, coordinated filesystem snapshots or managed cloud backups provide stronger consistency. When moving to MongoDB Atlas with little downtime, Atlas live migration is the preferred path when your source topology is supported.

Before running anything, inventory the source, install a compatible release of MongoDB Database Tools, create least-privilege credentials, verify network and encryption settings, and test a restore. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption about recoverability.

What MongoDB backup and migration tools actually do

mongodump is a command-line program in the MongoDB Database Tools package. It reads collections and writes a binary BSON dump, either as a directory of files or as an archive. mongorestore is the matching command-line loader: it reads a BSON dump, archive or standard input and sends the data to a mongod or mongos instance.

These programs move data, indexes and collection metadata, but they do not by themselves complete an application migration. You still have to provision the destination, configure users and roles, test application behavior, change connection strings and control the cutover. A dump is also a point-in-time operation; writes that occur after the dump finishes are not present in that dump.

Choose a method before you copy data

Method Best fit Main condition Important limitation
mongodump and mongorestore Relatively small, self-managed deployments and migrations that can use a maintenance window The source and destination must be compatible, and the destination must accept the connection Extended downtime may be required; a dump is not automatically a coordinated backup for every sharded topology
mongodump with oplog, then mongorestore with oplogReplay A replica set that must continue accepting writes while the dump runs The source has an accessible replica-set oplog and the dump is taken with --oplog It does not remove the need for a controlled application cutover, and it should not be assumed to apply to standalone deployments or every sharded arrangement
Atlas live migration Supported moves to MongoDB Atlas where downtime must be low The source topology and network path must meet Atlas migration requirements Existing users and roles are not migrated; writes after a seeding dump completes must be handled during synchronization and cutover
Filesystem snapshots or managed cloud backups Large deployments, frequent recovery points and sharded clusters needing coordinated consistency The snapshot or backup service must coordinate all required data-bearing members Availability and procedures depend on the storage or managed-service implementation

MongoDB’s Atlas Architecture Center describes datasets under 300 GB as “relatively small” for a dump-and-restore migration when an extended application outage is acceptable. That is a recommendation threshold, not a universal capacity limit: storage speed, index size, network bandwidth and recovery objectives can make a smaller database impractical or a larger one manageable.

Inventory the source and define the recovery target

Record the facts that determine whether a method is safe. Do this before scheduling a dump.

  • Topology: standalone server, replica set or sharded cluster. A replica set provides an oplog that can support a continuously written dump; a standalone does not.
  • MongoDB release and feature compatibility version (FCV): record both. A destination should run a compatible major version and FCV before data is loaded.
  • Data footprint: include collection data, indexes, system databases, free disk required for the dump and temporary space for an archive or decompression.
  • Consistency requirements: decide whether writes can stop for the dump window. Identify transactions, validation rules, time-series collections and any other features your application relies on.
  • Security: note TLS, certificate authorities, client-side field-level encryption, Queryable Encryption, authentication mechanism and where credentials are stored.
  • Recovery objective: define how much data loss is acceptable (the recovery point objective) and how quickly the service must return (the recovery time objective).
  • Cutover plan: list every application, job, integration and connection string that can write to the source.

Use this inventory to choose between a maintenance-window dump, an oplog-assisted replica-set dump, live migration or a coordinated snapshot. Do not select a method solely by database size.

Prepare tools, accounts and network access

Install a compatible Database Tools release

Install the latest stable MongoDB Database Tools release appropriate for the operating system and deployment. The current mongorestore documentation is version 100.19.1. Keep the tools version-compatible with the MongoDB deployment; test the exact binary in a staging restore before using it in production.

Verify that the command resolves to the intended installation:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
mongodump --version
mongorestore --version

Run the commands from a host with enough local disk for the dump and a reliable network path to the source or destination. Avoid placing a production dump in a world-readable directory. Encrypt the files at rest and restrict access to the account running the backup.

Create least-privilege credentials

The source account needs read access to every database and collection included in the dump. For a self-managed restore, grant only the permissions required for the objects being created; the built-in restore role is the usual starting point when its scope matches the operation. On MongoDB Atlas, the documented mongorestore workflow requires an Atlas administrator role.

Create a consistent BSON dump

When writes can stop

The simplest consistency model is to stop application writes for the dump window. Quiesce workers, queues and scheduled jobs, wait for in-flight operations to finish, then run the dump. This gives the dump a clear point in time without depending on oplog retention.

mongodump
  --uri="mongodb://backup_user@source-host.example/?authSource=admin"
  --out="/secure/backups/mongodb-2026-10-15"

Use the source’s actual URI, authentication options and TLS settings. The output directory contains BSON and metadata files. Keep the directory intact until the restore has been verified. If you prefer one file for transfer, create an archive and optionally compress it:

mongodump
  --uri="mongodb://backup_user@source-host.example/?authSource=admin"
  --archive="/secure/backups/mongodb-2026-10-15.archive"
  --gzip

Do not delete the original dump until you have checked that the files can be read and that the destination restore passes validation. A compressed archive reduces storage and transfer volume but requires CPU and a compatible restore command.

When a replica set must keep accepting writes

On a replica set, --oplog records oplog entries generated while the dump runs. The dump and oplog together can represent a recoverable point in time even though writes continued during the copy:

mongodump
  --uri="mongodb://backup_user@replica-member.example/?replicaSet=rs0&authSource=admin"
  --oplog
  --out="/secure/backups/mongodb-2026-10-15"

The oplog must remain available for the entire operation. If the oplog rolls over before the dump completes, the resulting backup cannot provide the intended continuity. Monitor dump duration and oplog capacity, and verify that the command completed successfully.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This technique is for replica sets. Do not assume it produces a transactionally coordinated backup for a standalone server or for every sharded topology. For sharded clusters, use a backup method designed to coordinate data across shards and preserve transaction atomicity.

Encryption and feature restrictions

The MongoDB Database Tools reference states that mongorestore cannot be used with collections that use Queryable Encryption or client-side field-level encryption. If either feature is present, stop and design a supported backup and recovery procedure for that encryption model instead of treating a normal BSON dump as sufficient.

Restore a dump into MongoDB

Prepare the destination

Provision storage for the restored data and indexes, confirm network reachability and configure TLS and authentication before loading anything. Use a destination MongoDB major version and FCV that are compatible with the source. Test the restore in an isolated environment first; this catches unsupported index definitions, validation rules, feature differences and missing privileges without risking production.

Decide whether the destination should be empty. Restoring into a database that already contains collections can merge data, collide with existing objects or leave stale documents. A clean, controlled destination makes validation and rollback easier.

Restore a directory dump

mongorestore
  --uri="mongodb://restore_user@destination-host.example/?authSource=admin"
  "/secure/backups/mongodb-2026-10-15"

For an archive created with --archive and --gzip, use:

mongorestore
  --uri="mongodb://restore_user@destination-host.example/?authSource=admin"
  --archive="/secure/backups/mongodb-2026-10-15.archive"
  --gzip

The program loads data from a binary dump created by mongodump, an archive or standard input into a mongod or mongos instance. Preserve the command output and exit status as part of the recovery record. A successful process exit means the loader completed; it is not proof that application behavior is correct.

Replay the oplog after an online dump

If the dump was created with --oplog, restore the data and replay the captured operations:

mongorestore
  --uri="mongodb://restore_user@destination-host.example/?authSource=admin"
  --oplogReplay
  "/secure/backups/mongodb-2026-10-15"

Oplog replay brings the destination to the dump’s captured point in time. It does not make the destination permanently current while the source continues to receive writes. Plan a final write pause, allow the destination to catch up, validate it, switch clients and only then resume writes on the destination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check version and feature compatibility

Do not treat a BSON dump as a way to bypass version planning. Check the source major version, destination major version and FCV before restoring. Restore into a supported compatible release, then validate behavior before changing FCV or upgrading further.

  • Start the destination with the intended authentication and TLS configuration.
  • Restore a representative sample in staging before the full production dataset.
  • Check index definitions, unique constraints, collection validators and namespaces.
  • Run representative reads and writes, including transactions if the application uses them.
  • Verify driver compatibility and connection-string options against the destination release.
  • Document any version-specific feature that must be enabled after the data load.

If a restore reports an unsupported option or object, do not suppress the error and continue to cut over. Identify the incompatible feature, adjust the destination or migration plan, and repeat the test.

Migrate to MongoDB Atlas

Use Atlas live migration for low downtime

MongoDB recommends Atlas live migration when possible because it automates many migration tasks with the least downtime. It is the preferred route when the source topology is supported and your network, authentication and firewall configuration allow Atlas to read the source.

  1. Inventory the source topology, MongoDB version, FCV, data size, indexes, encryption settings and write workload.
  2. Create the Atlas destination and configure its network access, encryption and database users.
  3. In the Atlas migration workflow, provide the source connection details and complete the required connectivity checks.
  4. Allow Atlas to seed the data and synchronize changes while the source remains available.
  5. Monitor lag and validate collections, indexes, validation rules and representative application queries on Atlas.
  6. Schedule a short cutover: stop or drain writers, wait for the migration to catch up, update every application connection string, then resume writes on Atlas.
  7. Keep the source and its backup according to your recovery policy until the new deployment has operated successfully through a defined observation period.

Live migration reduces downtime; it does not remove the need for an application-level freeze and final connection-string change. Atlas also does not migrate existing users or roles. Create destination users and roles explicitly, then update applications to use them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use dump and restore for a smaller Atlas move

For a relatively small dataset (under 300 GB) where an extended outage is acceptable, Atlas documentation recommends the mongodump and mongorestore approach. The threshold is guidance, not a guaranteed performance boundary.

  1. Stop writes and background jobs on the source.
  2. Run mongodump with a source account that can read all required databases.
  3. Confirm the dump completed and transfer it securely to the restore host.
  4. Configure Atlas network access and create the Atlas administrator credentials required for mongorestore.
  5. Run mongorestore against the Atlas connection string.
  6. Check indexes, validators, collection counts, representative queries and application permissions.
  7. Change application connection strings and resume writes only after validation.

Writes issued after mongodump completes are not included in that dump. Therefore, either keep writes stopped through cutover or use a migration process that continuously synchronizes changes. Atlas does not carry over existing users and roles, so account provisioning belongs in the cutover checklist.

Atlas migration guidance limits mongoimport and mongoexport to small datasets for testing or development in the described workflow. They are not a substitute for a production backup plan.

Can you migrate MongoDB with no downtime?

“No downtime” usually means no prolonged outage, not that no operation ever pauses. A live migration can copy data and changes while applications run, but the final switch still requires a controlled moment in which writers are paused, drained or redirected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a self-managed replica set, an oplog-assisted dump can reduce the outage to the final replay and cutover. The source must retain the required oplog entries, and the destination must be validated before clients move. If the source is standalone, if the oplog is unavailable, or if the deployment is sharded and needs cross-shard transaction consistency, select a coordinated backup or migration service instead.

  • Measure replication or migration lag before setting a cutover time.
  • Quiesce scheduled jobs and asynchronous workers, not only the web application.
  • Use a reversible connection-string change or routing switch where possible.
  • Keep the source read-only or otherwise protected until the destination is proven healthy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Sharded clusters need coordinated protection

A sharded cluster stores related data across multiple shards and includes configuration metadata. Independent dumps taken at different times can produce a state in which cross-shard transactions or related documents do not line up. For this reason, use a coordinated backup method that preserves transaction atomicity across shards, such as an appropriate filesystem snapshot or managed cloud backup procedure.

If you are evaluating a dump-based migration for a sharded source, obtain a topology-specific procedure and test it with your exact MongoDB release. Do not infer that a replica-set oplog command is sufficient merely because each shard is itself a replica set.

Validate the restored or migrated database

Validation is the step that turns a copied file set into a usable recovery point. Perform it before cutover and repeat critical checks after applications connect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Structure: compare expected database and collection names, document counts and approximate data sizes.
  • Indexes: list indexes and confirm unique, partial, TTL and text definitions required by the application.
  • Rules: inspect collection validators, validation levels and validation actions.
  • Security: test destination users, roles, authentication mechanisms and authorization for each application service.
  • Queries: run representative reads, writes, aggregation pipelines and transaction paths.
  • Integrations: test change streams, scheduled jobs, reporting tools and queue consumers if they depend on the database.
  • Recovery: document the exact restore command, credentials path, tool version, dump location and time required to repeat the operation.

Compare application-level results, not only collection counts. A restore can contain every document while still failing because an index, validator, role or connection option is missing.

Common failures and how to recover

Authentication or authorization errors

Check the username, authentication database, TLS settings and role scope. The account that can read the source is not automatically allowed to create collections and indexes on the destination. For Atlas, verify that the account has the administrator role required by the documented restore workflow.

Connection and network failures

Test DNS, firewall rules, IP access lists, port reachability and certificate validation from the host running the tool. Keep the dump local while it is being created, then transfer it over an encrypted channel. A long restore should be resumable operationally: retain the original dump so you can retry after fixing connectivity.

Version or feature errors

Confirm both MongoDB versions and FCV, then reproduce the restore in staging. Unsupported indexes, validators or encrypted collections must be addressed in the migration design. Do not use mongorestore for Queryable Encryption or client-side field-level encrypted collections; follow the supported procedure for those features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Missing recent writes

A normal dump contains data through the time it completed. Writes after that point are absent. Restore from a dump taken with --oplog and use --oplogReplay when the source is an eligible replica set, or choose a live migration process that synchronizes changes. In either case, perform a final controlled cutover.

Inconsistent sharded data

Stop using independent shard dumps as a presumed atomic backup. For sharded deployments, move to a coordinated backup method designed for cross-shard consistency and transaction atomicity, then test a full restore.

Build a backup policy that survives an incident

Schedule backups according to the recovery point your business can tolerate, retain multiple restore points, encrypt backup files, restrict access and monitor failures. Keep at least one copy separate from the production environment. Record tool versions and commands so another operator can execute the recovery without relying on undocumented shell history.

Run restore drills on a schedule. A drill should measure how long it takes to provision the destination, transfer or access the backup, restore data and indexes, recreate users and roles, validate application behavior and complete a cutover. Use the result to adjust retention, storage, oplog capacity and staffing. No universal backup or restore time applies to every MongoDB deployment; hardware, indexes, network and dataset shape determine the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical cutover checklist

  1. Confirm the destination version, FCV, storage capacity, encryption and network access.
  2. Verify that the backup completed and can be read by the pinned Database Tools version.
  3. Restore or synchronize into a clean destination and record errors.
  4. Create destination users and roles, especially for Atlas, where existing accounts are not migrated.
  5. Run structural, index, security and representative-query validation.
  6. Announce the write freeze or final migration window.
  7. Stop writers and workers, or place the application in a controlled maintenance mode.
  8. Replay the captured oplog or wait for live migration lag to reach the planned cutover point.
  9. Change every application and integration connection string.
  10. Resume writes on the destination, monitor errors and retain the source backup until the rollback window expires.

The Bottom Line

Use mongodump and mongorestore for smaller, compatible deployments when a maintenance window is acceptable. Add --oplog and --oplogReplay for an eligible replica set that must keep accepting writes, but still perform a controlled cutover. For low-downtime moves to supported MongoDB Atlas sources, use live migration; for large or sharded systems, prefer a coordinated snapshot or managed backup that preserves consistency. In every case, compatibility checks, least-privilege access and a tested restore determine whether the backup is actually usable.
