The dependable way to back up a cPanel-hosted public_html directory automatically is to configure scheduled backups in WHM → Backup → Backup Configuration, then add an Rsync Additional Destination on another server. Create a restricted remote account, authenticate with an SSH key, validate the destination, run a test backup, and verify that you can restore a file. Keep a local copy as well: cPanel warns that remote transfers take additional processing time and recommends saving backups to a remote Additional Destinations location as well as locally.
Choose the setup that matches your access
There are two different cPanel workflows, and confusing them is the most common reason an off-site backup plan fails.

If you administer the server, use the WHM method. It gives you retention controls, destination validation, notifications, and the option to use incremental backups. If you only have cPanel access, use a full account archive and treat the transfer as a manual or provider-managed process rather than assuming the user interface will schedule it for you.
Why Rsync is usually the right remote destination
Rsync is the natural choice when the destination server accepts SSH. In cPanel’s Additional Destinations configuration, you supply the remote hostname, SSH port, remote username, destination path, and a private key. The documented default destination port is 22. cPanel recommends key authentication rather than relying on an interactive password.

Rsync also matters when storage and transfer volume are concerns. cPanel states that an Incremental backup type can use only Rsync Additional Destinations. If you select incremental backups, an FTP or WebDAV destination is not an equivalent substitute.
FTP remains useful when a provider supplies only an FTP endpoint, and WebDAV or a custom destination may fit a particular storage service. Those choices change the transport and destination fields; they do not remove the need to test a restore.

Create a dedicated remote account
Make a separate account on the destination server for backups. Give it a directory reserved for this purpose, and avoid using a personal administrator account. The account should be able to write to the backup directory but should not have broad permission to change unrelated files.
- Use a destination path that is outside the source server’s public web root.
- Keep the remote account’s files and credentials separate from the live website.
- Decide how much historical data the remote storage can retain before you configure the WHM retention policy.
- Record the remote hostname, SSH port, username, and absolute destination path; you will need each value in the Additional Destination form.
Set up SSH key authentication
Generate or select an SSH key on the cPanel server, then install the matching public key for the dedicated remote account. The private key remains on the cPanel server and is entered or selected in the Rsync destination configuration; the public key belongs in the remote account’s authorized-key configuration. Do not place either key under public_html or in a downloadable backup directory.

Confirm that the remote account can authenticate with the selected key and reach the intended directory before depending on a scheduled run. If your provider manages SSH access, ask it to install the key for the backup account and confirm the permitted port.
Configure an automatic remote backup in WHM
You need WHM administrator access for this procedure.

- Enable backups. Turn on the server backup system and choose the accounts and backup options appropriate for your recovery needs. A WHM account backup is broader than a copy of only
public_html; check what your selected configuration includes. - Choose a retention policy. Set how many backup generations should remain according to available local and remote storage. Retention is a storage decision as well as a recovery decision: deleting every older generation leaves you without protection from a problem discovered late.
- Keep a local destination. cPanel recommends retaining local backups in addition to a remote Additional Destinations location. A local copy can make a same-server recovery faster, while the remote copy protects against loss of the hosting server or its storage.
- Add an Additional Destination. In the Additional Destinations area, create a new destination and select Rsync for an SSH-capable server.
- Enter the connection details. Supply the remote hostname, port (22 unless your destination uses another port), remote username, destination directory, and the SSH private key. Use the dedicated account and its restricted directory rather than a root login.
- Set the transfer timeout deliberately. cPanel documents a remote-destination timeout range of 30–300 seconds. Choose a value that allows the destination to respond without hiding a genuinely unreachable server.
- Save and validate. Select Save and Validate Destination. Do not treat a form that saved successfully as proof that a scheduled transfer will work; validation should complete against the actual host, credentials, path, and key.
- Save the complete configuration. Confirm that the destination is enabled and that the backup type, retention, and account selection match the recovery plan.
Understand the schedule and run a first backup
Default schedule
cPanel’s documented default backup cron entry is:
0 2 * * * /usr/local/cpanel/bin/backupThat means the job runs at 2:00 AM in the server’s local time, not necessarily at 2:00 AM in your own time zone. WHM administrators can change the schedule in Configure cPanel Cron Jobs. If the server is in a different region or has a maintenance window, document the server’s local time for everyone responsible for checking backup results.

Force a controlled run
After destination validation, start one backup manually rather than waiting for the next overnight run:
/usr/local/cpanel/bin/backup --forceRun this during a period when the server can tolerate the extra processing and transfer work. Remote transfers add processing time, so avoid assuming that the job will finish immediately just because the destination test succeeded.

Verify the result on the destination
- Sign in to the remote backup account and confirm that new backup data exists in the intended directory.
- Check timestamps and ownership so the account that must perform a recovery can read the files.
- Review WHM/cPanel logs and configured notifications for warnings, authentication failures, timeouts, or skipped accounts.
- Compare the result with the backup type you selected. An incremental Rsync run is not the same artifact as a standalone full archive.
A successful transfer is not proof of recoverability. Copy a representative file to a safe staging location and open it, or perform a small restoration through the method your team would use during an incident. Repeat that test periodically rather than testing only the first run.
Use the cPanel Backup Wizard when you do not have WHM
A cPanel user can create a full account backup from Backup or Backup Wizard. The result is a full-account .tar.gz archive, and that archive includes the account’s public_html files. Depending on the hosting provider’s enabled features, the wizard can send the archive to a remote FTP server or an SCP destination.

- Open Backup or Backup Wizard in cPanel.
- Choose the option to create a full account backup.
- Select the remote FTP or SCP destination offered by your host and enter its connection details.
- Start the backup and wait for the archive and transfer to complete.
- Log in to the remote destination and verify that the archive exists and is readable.
There is an important recovery limitation: cPanel states that a full backup cannot be automatically restored from the cPanel user interface. Recovery requires extracting the archive and uploading the public_html contents, or obtaining help from the hosting provider or a WHM administrator. Preserve the archive until you have confirmed that the extracted files and any required account data are usable.
If you need a recurring schedule but have no WHM access, ask the provider whether it can configure a server-side backup schedule or a managed remote destination. Do not place a private key, FTP password, or backup script in public_html to imitate WHM functionality.

The right choice is determined first by access level and provider support, then by transport security, whether you need incremental transfers, retention capacity, restore speed, and whether the platform offers validation and notifications. A method that transfers successfully but cannot be restored by the people on call is not a complete backup plan.
Security controls that prevent a backup from becoming a new risk
- Least privilege: restrict the remote account to the backup directory and avoid root credentials.
- Protect private keys: keep the private key outside
public_html, limit who can read it, and remove unused keys. - Separate production and backup access: use different credentials for the live site and the remote backup account.
- Protect the destination from web access: do not store backup archives in a publicly served directory.
- Plan retention: retain enough generations to recover from a problem that was not noticed immediately, while monitoring available storage.
- Monitor notifications: a missed job, authentication error, timeout, or full destination should produce an actionable alert.
- Test permissions: confirm that the account responsible for recovery can read and extract the remote data.
Troubleshoot a failed validation or transfer
Destination validation fails immediately
Recheck the hostname, port, username, destination path, and selected private key. Confirm that the matching public key is installed for that remote account and that the account is allowed to connect through the stated port. A typo in an absolute path can look like an authentication problem when the login itself works.

The job times out
Confirm that the remote server is reachable from the cPanel host and that its firewall permits the configured port. Review the timeout value within cPanel’s documented 30–300-second range, then check whether the destination is overloaded or out of storage. A longer timeout cannot fix a blocked port or an unavailable host.
The transfer completes but no usable backup appears
Inspect the remote directory, ownership, timestamps, and available space. Review the backup log for skipped accounts or partial transfers. Then extract a copy in a staging location and open a representative website file. Do not mark the run successful solely because the transfer process returned without an obvious error.

The remote archive exists but restoration is unclear
For a full-account .tar.gz created through cPanel, plan on extracting it and uploading the needed public_html contents, or ask a WHM administrator or provider to perform the restoration. Document this procedure while the site is healthy; an emergency is the worst time to discover that the cPanel interface cannot restore the archive automatically.
A repeatable operating checklist
- Create a dedicated remote account and a non-public destination directory.
- Install and test an SSH key when using Rsync or SCP.
- Configure WHM Backup Configuration, including retention and a local copy.
- Add the Rsync Additional Destination with the correct host, port, username, path, and key.
- Use Save and Validate Destination.
- Run
/usr/local/cpanel/bin/backup --forceonce and inspect the remote result. - Confirm the documented schedule—by default,
0 2 * * * /usr/local/cpanel/bin/backupat 2:00 AM server local time—or change it in Configure cPanel Cron Jobs. - Review logs and notifications after scheduled runs.
- Perform a small restore test and record who performs a full recovery.
- Revisit retention, destination capacity, credentials, and restore tests as the site and server change.
What a reliable decision looks like
For a WHM-managed server, configure local backups plus an Rsync Additional Destination over SSH, validate it, and prove recovery with a test restore. For a cPanel-only account, create full .tar.gz archives through Backup or Backup Wizard and send them to the supported FTP or SCP destination, while understanding that restoration is an extraction-and-upload task or a provider-assisted operation. In both cases, automation is useful only when the remote copy is readable, retained long enough to matter, and demonstrably restorable.
