Back up before you modify, reset, repair, or replace anything on your PS5. The safest method is Sony’s documented USB console backup, which can include saved data plus selected games, apps, captures, and settings. If you subscribe to PlayStation Plus, also confirm that your latest saves have finished syncing to cloud storage. These are different protections: a USB backup is a console-level recovery image, while cloud storage is primarily a saved-data service.

Use the USB route documented by Sony’s PS5 backup and restore guide. Do not rely on the separate data-transfer instruction that says PS5 saved data cannot be copied to USB; that limitation concerns the transfer procedure, not the full-console backup feature.

Which backup should you make before changing a PS5?

For the lowest-risk preparation, make a USB console backup and verify PlayStation Plus cloud synchronization if your account has that service. A USB backup gives you a way to restore the console’s selected user data after a failed modification or a reset. Cloud storage gives you an additional copy of eligible game saves, but it is not a complete image of your console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do both when practical. The USB backup protects more categories in one operation; the cloud copy can still be useful if the USB drive is unavailable or the console must be recovered on a later date. Neither method should be treated as a guarantee that every item on every storage device is included, so check the scope below before you begin.

USB console backup and cloud storage compared

Consideration USB console backup PlayStation Plus cloud storage
What it protects Selected console categories: games and apps saved on the PS5, saved data, screenshots and video clips, and settings. Sony says all user data saved on the PS5 is included in the backup data, subject to the stated storage exclusions. Saved data uploaded to the cloud. It is not documented as a full copy of screenshots, video clips, settings, trophies, or every installed game and app.
What you need A compatible USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Sony cautions that not every USB device works. An active PlayStation Plus membership and an internet connection.
How recovery works Use Restore Your PS5. Restoring erases data currently on the console before applying the backup. Upload or download saves from the saved-data controls. This is a save-level operation rather than a full-console restore.
Important exclusions Games and apps stored on USB extended storage or an M.2 SSD are not included. Trophies are excluded. Only saves that have actually synchronized are available. Sony’s cloud page lists storage limits of 100 GB for PS5 saved data, 100 GB for PS4 saved data, and 1,000 PS4 saved-data files; the page does not state a publication year for those limits.
Best use Preparing for a system modification, reset, repair, or broad recovery where settings and other user data matter. Maintaining an additional copy of recent saves, especially when you cannot make a USB backup immediately.

The detailed USB procedure is in Sony’s console backup guide; cloud behavior and limits are described in Sony’s PlayStation Plus cloud-storage guide.

Prepare before you start

Do these checks before opening the PS5 or changing system software. They reduce the chance of discovering a missing drive, stale cloud copy, or excluded storage after the console has already been altered.

  • Finish the game session. Save normally, close the game, and allow any pending save operation to complete.
  • Identify every storage location. Note whether games or apps are on the PS5’s internal storage, a USB extended-storage drive, or an M.2 SSD. The latter two locations are not included in the USB console backup.
  • Choose a separate backup drive. Sony lists FAT32 and exFAT USB drives as supported formats but warns that device compatibility varies. There is no universal capacity or model recommendation in the support instructions, so check that the drive has enough free space for the categories you select.
  • Do not assume a game-storage drive is ready. A drive formatted as PS5 USB extended storage uses a different format and cannot store the console backup in that format. Use another compatible drive, or deal with the existing extended-storage content before changing its format.
  • Update trophy status. Trophies are not part of the USB backup. Open the relevant game or trophy area while online so the latest trophy status can be synchronized to your account before the backup.
  • Check your account. Cloud saves are associated with the PlayStation account that uploaded them. If you have never signed in to PlayStation services, cross-console restore behavior is more restricted.
  • Plan uninterrupted power. Do not start the backup immediately before unplugging, moving, or opening the console. Sony warns that interrupting a backup or restore can cause data loss or corruption and can damage the console or USB drive.

How to make a USB backup of the PS5

This is Sony’s full-console backup route, not the separate game-data transfer route. Keep the console powered and connected until the completion screen appears.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect the USB drive directly to the PS5. If multiple USB drives are attached, leave them connected only if needed and be ready to select the intended destination in the next screens.
  2. Open the backup menu. From the home screen, go to Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5.
  3. Select the destination. When more than one eligible USB drive is detected, choose the drive you intend to use. Confirm its identity and available space before proceeding.
  4. Choose categories. Select the categories offered by the console, such as games and apps, saved data, screenshots and video clips, and settings. Remember that content on USB extended storage or an M.2 SSD is outside the backup’s scope.
  5. Continue with Next. Review the selection. You can enter an optional description, which is useful if you keep more than one dated backup.
  6. Start the operation. Select Back Up. The PS5 restarts and performs the backup.
  7. Wait for completion. Do not turn off the PS5 or disconnect the drive. Sony’s explicit warning is: “Don’t turn off your PS5® console while backing up or restoring data.” Wait for the completion screen and follow the prompt to return to the home screen.

If the console reports that the drive is unsupported, try a different compatible FAT32 or exFAT drive rather than assuming the backup menu is broken. Sony does not promise that every drive meeting a format specification will work with every PS5.

What the USB backup contains and leaves out

Categories you can select

Sony lists games and apps, saved data, screenshots and video clips, and settings as backup categories. The guide also says all user data saved on the PS5 is included in the backup data. This makes the USB operation broader than exporting one individual game save: it is designed to preserve a set of console data for a later console restore.

Games and apps on separate storage are excluded

Games and apps stored on USB extended storage or on an M.2 SSD are not included in the console backup. If you depend on those installations, keep the storage device and its contents safe, or plan to reinstall or recover those items separately after the modification. Do not interpret a successful backup as proof that every installed game is inside the backup file.

Trophies are excluded

Trophy data is not part of the USB backup. Update your game status before starting so the latest trophy information is associated with your account. The backup itself should not be treated as a trophy archive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The backup is not an individual save-file export

The documented USB operation creates a console backup containing selected categories. It is not a file browser that lets you pick one PS5 save and copy it to a USB stick. That distinction matters when a modification affects only one game: use cloud save controls for a save-level copy, or make the broader USB backup if you need recovery coverage for the console.

How to back up PS5 saves to PlayStation Plus cloud storage

Cloud storage requires PlayStation Plus. It is useful as a second copy, but it protects only saved data that has completed an upload; it does not replace the USB console backup for screenshots, settings, or other categories.

Enable the conditions for automatic synchronization

PS5 saves can sync automatically when you close a game or put the console into rest mode. Automatic updates must be enabled, and the rest-mode setting that keeps the PS5 connected to the internet must also be enabled. If either condition is missing, a recent session may still exist only on the console.

Before modifying the system, close the game normally, leave the PS5 online, and allow enough time for synchronization. Do not infer completion merely because the game was closed; check the saved-data controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Upload manually

  1. Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5).
  2. Open the upload controls for PS5 saved data and select the game or saves you want to place in cloud storage.
  3. Wait for the upload to finish and confirm the resulting status in the same saved-data area.
  4. If you also use PS4 games, handle their saves through the corresponding PS4 saved-data controls. The PS5 cloud service lists separate limits for PS5 and PS4 saved data.

Download after the modification

Use the same Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5) area and choose the download controls when you need to bring a cloud save back to the console. Check the game’s local state first so you do not overwrite a newer local save by mistake. Cloud storage is a saved-data service, not a mechanism for rebuilding the entire PS5 configuration.

Understand the listed cloud limits

Sony’s cloud-storage support page lists 100 GB of PS5 saved data, 100 GB of PS4 saved data, and 1,000 PS4 saved-data files. Sony Interactive Entertainment does not state a publication year for those figures on the reviewed page, so treat them as the limits currently shown there and verify the service page again if the limit affects your plan.

How to verify that your protection is real

A backup plan is useful only if the operation completed and covers the data you care about. Perform these checks before opening the console or applying a system change:

  • Confirm that the USB process reached its completion screen rather than stopping at a progress message.
  • Record which categories you selected and where your games and apps are installed.
  • Confirm that the USB drive is the intended drive, especially if several drives were attached.
  • Check that the newest cloud upload has a completed status for each important PS5 game, if you use PlayStation Plus.
  • Confirm that trophies were synchronized separately; they are not restored from the USB backup.
  • Keep the USB drive disconnected from unnecessary handling and store it where it will not be reformatted or overwritten before you finish the modification.

If a game was last played while offline, or the console entered rest mode without an internet connection, assume its latest progress may not be in the cloud until the manual status check confirms it.

How to restore a PS5 from the USB backup

Restoration is a destructive operation. Sony says that restoring a PS5 from a backup erases all data currently saved on the console, and erased data cannot be restored. Do not use the restore function as a casual way to retrieve one save when the console contains newer data you have not copied elsewhere.

System-software requirement

The system software on the console being restored must be the same version or newer than the version installed when the backup was made. Sony states this requirement explicitly in its backup guide. If you modified or reinstalled system software, update the PS5 as necessary before attempting the restore.

Restore steps

  1. Connect the USB drive containing the backup to the PS5.
  2. Open Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Restore Your PS5.
  3. Choose the drive and backup data you want to restore.
  4. Read the warning that current console data will be erased, then confirm only when you have preserved anything newer that matters.
  5. Leave the console and USB drive connected until the restore completes. Do not turn off the PS5 during the operation.
  6. Afterward, check your games, settings, saved data, and separately managed storage. Games and apps that were on USB extended storage or an M.2 SSD were not part of the backup.

Account and console-sharing cautions

Backup data is linked to the PlayStation account. If you have never signed in to PlayStation services, Sony says you can restore only to the same console. A restore also disables Console Sharing and Offline Play; re-enable that feature afterward if the console needs to be used by other accounts or offline.

Why the USB-transfer instructions seem to contradict the backup instructions

Sony’s PS4/PS5 data-transfer guide says that PS5 saved data cannot be copied from a PS5 console to a USB drive using the transfer method described there. Sony’s separate console-backup guide explicitly supports saved data as part of a full PS5 backup to USB.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These statements describe different features. The transfer path is not an individual PS5 save exporter; the backup path creates a console backup that can contain saved data along with other selected categories. For PS4 games, Sony documents USB save transfer differently, so do not apply PS4 save-copy instructions as if they were instructions for PS5 game saves.

Troubleshooting before you modify the console

The PS5 does not recognize the USB drive

Check that the drive is formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, connected directly, and not being used in PS5 USB extended-storage format. Try another compatible drive if the backup menu still does not offer it. Sony warns that not every USB device works, so a correct format alone does not establish compatibility.

The drive is recognized but the backup will not start

Return to the category-selection screen and verify that the selected destination is the intended drive and has enough free space for the categories chosen. If the drive is nearly full or contains a conflicting extended-storage setup, use a separate compatible drive rather than changing formats immediately. Preserve any data on the drive before reformatting it.

The backup stopped or the console was interrupted

Do not assume a partial operation is usable. Sony warns that interruption can cause loss or corruption and can damage the console or USB drive. Restart the PS5 normally, check whether the backup completed, and make a fresh backup before proceeding with the modification. Keep the console powered and avoid disconnecting the drive during the retry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The newest save is missing from cloud storage

Confirm PlayStation Plus membership, internet connectivity, automatic-update settings, and the rest-mode internet setting. Then close the game and use the manual upload controls under Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5). Wait for a completed upload status instead of relying on the fact that the game was closed.

A restore option is unavailable or fails

Check that the backup drive is connected, that the backup belongs to the account and console conditions Sony describes, and that the current system software is the same version or newer than the version used when the backup was created. Do not downgrade the console merely to match an older backup. If you have never signed in to PlayStation services, remember that Sony limits restoration to the same console.

A restored installation is missing

First check where the game or app was stored. USB extended storage and M.2 SSD content is not included in the USB console backup, so a successful restore does not mean those installations will reappear. The saved data may be restored while the game itself still needs to be recovered through its original storage or installation method.

A practical pre-modification sequence

Use this order when you want both broad recovery and a recent save copy:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

  1. Finish and close every important game.
  2. Bring the PS5 online and let PlayStation Plus synchronization complete, then verify the status manually if cloud storage is available.
  3. Synchronize trophy status separately.
  4. Connect a compatible FAT32 or exFAT USB drive that is not being used as PS5 extended storage.
  5. Run Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5, select the needed categories, and wait for the completion screen.
  6. Record which games and apps are on internal storage, USB extended storage, and the M.2 SSD so you know what the backup does not contain.
  7. Only after both checks succeed should you reset, open, repair, or otherwise modify the console.

This sequence leaves you with a verified cloud copy of eligible saves and a separate USB console backup before the change. If you later need a full recovery, remember that Restore Your PS5 erases the data currently on the console, so preserve any newer files before confirming it.
