Back up your progress before a game leaves a subscription catalog, but treat the save and the right to launch the game as separate things. Use a USB copy for individual PS4 saves, PlayStation Plus cloud storage for PS5-native saves, and a full-console backup only when you accept a complete-restore workflow. Then verify the backup timestamp and check the specific game’s current entitlement.
A save backup does not preserve game access
A saved game is your progress data: checkpoints, characters, settings and other state recorded by the console or PlayStation’s cloud service. A game license or subscription entitlement is the permission to start the game. Copying a save protects the progress file; it does not grant ownership, extend a PlayStation Plus membership or prove that a title remains playable after a catalog change.
When a game is scheduled to leave a subscription catalog, check that title’s current entitlement separately. Your options might depend on whether you own the game, use a disc, have an active subscription, or are trying to play a streamed version. Sony’s support guidance explains how saves are stored and transferred, but it does not establish one universal access result for every catalog departure, region, subscription state or title.

| Situation | Individual USB copy | PlayStation Plus cloud | Full-console USB backup | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PS4 game played on PS4 | Yes | Yes, with PlayStation Plus | Yes | Full restore erases data already on the PS4. |
| PS5-native game played on PS5 | No | Yes, with PlayStation Plus | Yes | PS5 saves cannot be exported individually to USB. |
| PS4 game played on PS5 | Yes, from the PS5’s Saved Data (PS4) menu | Yes, with PlayStation Plus | Yes | The USB method applies to the PS4 save, not to PS5-native save data. |
| Streamed PlayStation Plus game | Not as a normal console save export | Use online storage transfer | Not a substitute for the streamed-save workflow | Streamed and downloaded versions store saves differently. |
The safest plan is usually two-stage: make the supported local or cloud copy, then confirm its date and location before the game leaves. A full-console backup is useful for disaster recovery, but it is not a convenient single-save import.

Back up an individual PS4 save to a USB drive
PS4 allows individual saved-data files to be copied to removable USB storage. This is the most direct offline method when you want one game’s progress on a drive you control.
Copy the save from the PS4
- Connect a USB storage device to the PS4. The drive must be recognized by the console and have enough free space for the selected saves.
- Open Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data in System Storage > Copy to USB Storage Device.
- Select the game whose progress you want to preserve.
- Select one or more save files, then choose Copy.
- Wait for the copy to finish before removing the drive.
The copy is tied to the game and save file shown on the console. If several profiles or manual-save slots exist, select each file you actually need rather than assuming one file contains everything.
Restore a PS4 save from USB
- Connect the drive to the PS4 that will receive the save.
- Open Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data on USB Storage Device > Copy to System Storage.
- Choose the game and save files.
- Compare the displayed file dates with the save already on the console.
- Approve the overwrite only when the USB copy is the version you intend to use.
Restoring an older file over newer progress can permanently remove the newer local state. The console displays dates and warns before overwriting; use those timestamps as a required check, not as an optional detail.

Use PlayStation Plus cloud storage for PS4 saves
PlayStation Plus is required for cloud save storage. Sony’s current guidance lists up to 100 GB for PS4 saved data and a limit of 1,000 PS4 saved-data files. These service limits can change, so check the current console guidance if your library is unusually large.

Upload a PS4 save manually
- On the PS4, open Settings > Application Data Management > Saved Data in System Storage > Upload to Online Storage.
- Select the game and the save files to upload.
- Start the upload and leave the console connected until it completes.
- Check the cloud entry’s date against the local save before relying on it.
Download a PS4 save from the cloud
- Open Settings > Application Data Management > Saved Data in Online Storage > Download to System Storage.
- Select the game and the desired save.
- Compare the cloud timestamp with the local file.
- Confirm the overwrite only if the cloud copy is newer or is deliberately the version you want.
Automatic upload is convenient, but it can preserve an unwanted state if a game saves after corruption or an accidental mistake. A manual upload immediately before a catalog change gives you a clearly dated checkpoint.
Back up PS5-native saves: cloud storage or a full-console backup
Sony states: You can’t copy PS5 saved data from your PS5 console to a USB drive.
That restriction applies to individual PS5-native saved-data files. Connecting a flash drive and looking for a single-save export option will not produce a usable PS5 save file.
Synchronize PS5 saves with PlayStation Plus
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5).
- Open Sync Saved Data and configure Auto-Sync Saved Data, or use the available upload controls for a manual transfer.
- Check the synchronization status and the date of the cloud copy.
- Leave the console online until the upload has completed.
Sony’s current guidance lists up to 100 GB of PS5 saved-data cloud storage. The figure is a service limit, not a guarantee that every title uses the same save layout or that a catalog entitlement will remain active.
Use a PS5 full-console USB backup when you need broader recovery
A PS5 can include saved data in a full-console backup to USB. This protects the console as a whole rather than creating a portable, single-game PS5 save file. Restoration is destructive: restoring the backup erases data saved on the PS5. Preserve any newer screenshots, users, settings, games or saves before starting a restore, and confirm that you selected the intended backup.

Do not confuse the drive used for PS5 USB extended storage for games with the USB device used for a PS5 console backup. They are formatted and managed for different purposes; a game-storage drive is not automatically a valid console-backup target.
Copy PS4-game saves from a PS5 to USB
A PS5 can run PS4 games and can copy their PS4-format saves to USB. This is a separate capability from PS5-native save handling.
- Connect a compatible USB storage device to the PS5.
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS4) > Upload or Delete from Console Storage > Copy to USB Drive.
- Select the PS4 game.
- Select the save files, then choose Copy.
- Check the file date on the USB copy before removing the drive.
When you later need the file on a PS5, use the corresponding Saved Data (PS4) controls and compare timestamps before overwriting a newer local save. This menu path does not make PS5-native saves exportable.
Understand streamed versus downloaded PlayStation Plus games
Sony distinguishes between a game streamed through PlayStation Plus and a game downloaded to the console. A streamed game’s save is stored by PlayStation, while a downloaded game’s save is stored on the console. Moving between those forms uses online storage.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- If you streamed the game, use the service’s save-copy option to place the streamed save in online storage.
- If you downloaded the game, upload the console save to online storage before changing devices or versions.
- When switching from streaming to a downloaded copy, download the cloud save to the console before launching the downloaded game.
- When switching in the other direction, make sure the latest local progress has been uploaded first.
The save location does not answer whether you can launch the title after it leaves a catalog. Verify the game’s entitlement independently.
Full-console backup procedures and their trade-offs
PS4 full backup
Use a PS4 full backup when you are protecting the entire console, replacing a drive or preparing for a major recovery—not merely when you want to move one save.
- Synchronize trophies first so the latest trophy status is associated with your account.
- Prepare a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT.
- Ensure the drive has at least twice the storage space used by the backup file. The required capacity is relative to your data; there is no single safe drive size for every PS4.
- Open Settings > System > Back Up and Restore > Back Up.
- Include saved data and wait for the process to finish before disconnecting the drive.
To recover, use Settings > System > Back Up and Restore > Restore PS4 and select the backup. The restore erases data on the PS4, so first copy or synchronize anything newer than the backup.
PS5 full backup
Follow the PS5 console’s backup workflow to include saved data on a USB backup drive. A restore also erases data saved on the console. Treat the operation as a complete system recovery: verify the backup date, preserve newer data elsewhere and do not expect to extract one PS5-native save from the backup as a normal file.

Verify the copy before the game disappears
A backup is useful only if it contains the latest progress and can be located when you need it. Perform these checks immediately after copying:
- Open the console’s save-management screen and compare the local file date with the USB or cloud date.
- For cloud storage, confirm that synchronization or upload reports completion rather than merely being enabled.
- For USB copies, keep the drive connected until the console reports completion, then reconnect it later to confirm the files are visible.
- Record which PlayStation user profile created the save and which game edition it belongs to.
- Keep at least one copy that is not dependent on the same console. A local save and a cloud copy provide different failure protection.
- Do not overwrite a newer file merely because the backup is easier to find.
PS4 versus PS5 save options at a glance
| Option | Convenience | Portability | Account or subscription dependence | Restore scope |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PS4 individual USB | Simple for one or several selected games | Portable local file | No PlayStation Plus requirement stated | Selected save files only |
| PS4 cloud | Automatic or manual synchronization | Available through the account on supported consoles | PlayStation Plus required | Selected cloud saves |
| PS4 full backup | More preparation and storage | Whole-console recovery set | No cloud requirement stated | Restoring erases PS4 data |
| PS5-native cloud | Primary individual-save method | Available through PlayStation Plus cloud storage | PlayStation Plus required | Selected synchronized saves |
| PS5 full backup | Broad protection, not a quick single-save export | Whole-console recovery set | No cloud requirement stated | Restoring erases PS5 data |
| PS4 save on PS5 USB | Direct local copy for PS4-format saves | Portable local file | No PlayStation Plus requirement stated | Selected PS4-game saves |
Transfer a PS4 save to a PS5 without losing newer progress
When the game is a PS4 title running on PS5, use the PS5’s Saved Data (PS4) section. You can copy the save from USB or use PlayStation Plus cloud storage. Before importing, compare the PS5’s existing save with the USB or cloud timestamp. If the PS5 version is newer, preserve it first rather than accepting an overwrite prompt automatically.
For PS5-native editions, use synchronized PS5 cloud data or the full-console backup path. A PS4 save-copy procedure cannot be applied to a PS5-native save simply because the game has a PS4 release.

Troubleshooting common backup problems
The USB drive is not listed
- Reconnect the drive directly to the console and check whether it is recognized.
- For a PS4 full backup, verify that the drive uses FAT32 or exFAT.
- Confirm that the drive has enough free space; a full PS4 backup requires at least twice the space used by the backup file.
- For PS5, check that you are using a console-backup device rather than a drive formatted as PS5 USB extended storage for games.
The PS5 offers no single-save USB option
This is expected for PS5-native saved data. Use PlayStation Plus cloud storage or include the data in a full-console USB backup. Individual USB copying is available for PS4 saves on PS4 and for PS4 games running on PS5.
The cloud copy is older than the console copy
Do not download it over the newer local save. Upload the current local file manually, wait for completion and recheck the timestamp. If automatic synchronization is enabled, inspect its status before closing the game.
Quick Recap
The restored save does not show the expected progress
- Confirm that you restored the correct game, edition and PlayStation user profile.
- Check whether you restored a PS4-format save to a PS4 game rather than a PS5-native version.
- Compare dates across the console, USB and cloud entries to identify which copy is newest.
- If you used a full-console restore, remember that it replaces console data; recover any newer files from a separate copy.
Last-minute checklist before a catalog removal
- Check the game’s current entitlement separately from its save status.
- Identify whether you are playing a PS4 game, a PS5-native game, a streamed game or a downloaded game.
- Make the supported copy: PS4 individual USB, PS4 or PS5 cloud, PS4-game USB on PS5, or a full-console backup when broad recovery is justified.
- Wait for the copy or synchronization to finish.
- Compare the backup timestamp with the latest local save.
- Keep the USB device safe and leave the cloud copy available under the correct PlayStation account.
- Do not restore a full-console backup unless you have preserved newer console data and accept that restoration erases existing data.
