To use a physical PlayStation 2 game in a PC emulator, create a disc image with an optical drive that can read the disc’s CD or DVD format, then verify the image in PCSX2. The image is only one part of setup: PCSX2 also requires a PlayStation 2 BIOS dumped separately from a PS2 console. Use the instructions for your operating system and disc type, and check the copyright rules where you live before making or using a backup.

What you are making

A disc image is a file that reproduces the data structure of the original PS2 disc. PCSX2’s official documentation describes PS2 game media as CDs or DVDs that a standard optical drive can read. The drive does not need to be a special PlayStation accessory; it does need to support the particular media in your game.

Most games use DVD media, while some are CD-based. Larger PS2 releases can use DVD-9 dual-layer discs. A drive that reads ordinary DVDs is not automatically a reliable DVD-9 reader, so check dual-layer support when selecting hardware.

PCSX2’s dumping guide says the process does not harm the optical media. A correct image can be stored on your computer and selected by the emulator without repeatedly using the original disc.

What you need before starting

  • The original PS2 game disc.
  • A computer running Windows, macOS, or Linux.
  • An internal optical drive or an external USB optical drive that reads the disc’s CD, DVD, and, where applicable, DVD-9 format.
  • Sufficient storage for the resulting image and any additional copies you keep.
  • PCSX2 installed on the computer.
  • A legally obtained PS2 BIOS dumped separately from a PS2 console you own.

If your computer has no optical drive, PCSX2 suggests using an external USB drive or borrowing one. USB connection type is only part of the decision: confirm that the operating system recognizes the drive and that it reads the specific disc reliably.

Choose the method that matches your computer

Computer DVD-based game CD-based game Important qualification
Windows Media Preservation Frontend (MPF) or ImgBurn MPF or ImgBurn Confirm the Sony PlayStation 2 media type and CD-ROM or DVD-ROM designation in the chosen tool.
macOS Disk Utility, or the documented dd method The documented cdrdao method PCSX2 calls out separate CD instructions; Disk Utility’s resulting .cdr extension must be changed to .iso for PCSX2.
Linux Documented graphical tools or dd The separate CD procedure documented by PCSX2 Device names vary. /dev/sr0 is common, not universal; verify the correct device before running a command.

Do not apply a Windows procedure unchanged on macOS or Linux. The disc type matters particularly on macOS and Linux because CD dumping uses different instructions from DVD dumping.

Windows: dump the disc with MPF

MPF is a graphical option documented by PCSX2 for Windows. Its labels and supported versions can change, so use the current PCSX2 dumping guide alongside these steps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Insert the PS2 disc and open MPF.
  2. Scan for optical media and select the drive containing the game.
  3. Confirm, or enter, the media information as Sony PlayStation 2. Select whether the disc is CD-ROM or DVD-ROM according to the game.
  4. Choose an output folder and filename. Keep the image on a drive with enough free space and use a descriptive name that identifies the game and region if that information is known.
  5. Start the dump. Do not eject the disc, close the program, or allow the computer to sleep while the read is in progress.
  6. Wait until MPF reports that it is safe to eject the disc, then close the program and remove the media.

If MPF reports read errors or the resulting image later fails verification, repeat the dump at a lower drive speed if the software and drive expose that control. A slower read takes longer but can increase the chance of an exact copy.

Windows: dump the disc with ImgBurn

  1. Insert the PS2 disc and open ImgBurn.
  2. Select Create image file from disc.
  3. Choose the optical drive containing the game.
  4. Set the destination folder, filename, and image format offered by the program.
  5. Start the read and wait for the completion message before ejecting the disc.

PCSX2 warns that the official ImgBurn installer may present an OpenCandy adware offer if it is not unchecked. Review every installer screen and decline optional software. The PCSX2 guide recommends obtaining ImgBurn through Ninite; verify the current official PCSX2 instructions because installer offers can change.

macOS: DVD games with Disk Utility

Disk Utility is the straightforward graphical route for a DVD-based PS2 game. Use care: PCSX2 warns that misusing Disk Utility or command-line disk tools can cause data loss.

  1. Insert the PS2 DVD.
  2. Open Disk Utility and select the physical disc in the sidebar, not your internal storage volume.
  3. Choose File > New Image > Image from the volume.
  4. In the image options, choose DVD/CD master.
  5. Select a destination and save the image.
  6. When the operation finishes, locate the resulting file. macOS may give it a .cdr extension.
  7. Rename the extension from .cdr to .iso, retaining the file data. PCSX2 does not support the macOS-only .cdr extension even though the data produced by this option is identical to the disc image.

Only change the filename extension after the image has finished writing. Changing an extension does not repair an incomplete or inaccurate read.

macOS: command-line DVD and CD methods

DVD images with dd

PCSX2 documents dd for DVD dumping. The drive identifier differs between Macs, so identify it first with macOS’s disk-listing tools and substitute the correct device. A typical pattern uses a read-only optical device such as /dev/rdiskN as the input and a filename ending in .iso as the output.

dd if=/dev/rdiskN of=ps2-game.iso bs=2048

Here, rdiskN is an example device name, not a value to copy blindly. Verify that the input is the optical disc and that the output points to a normal storage location. Reversing the input and output can overwrite a disk. Keep the Terminal window open until the command returns to a prompt, then eject the disc and check the image in PCSX2.

CD images with cdrdao

CD-based PS2 games require the separate CD procedure documented by PCSX2. cdrdao is the command-line tool identified for this job. Follow the current PCSX2 syntax for your installed version and device path rather than adapting a DVD command: CD sector handling and the output files can differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Linux: graphical and command-line methods

PCSX2 documents graphical Linux options as well as dd. A graphical tool lets you select the optical drive and destination from visible controls; the exact application and labels depend on your distribution.

DVD games with dd

Linux commonly exposes an optical drive as /dev/sr0, but that path is not guaranteed. Confirm the device with your distribution’s disk utility or device-listing command before reading it.

dd if=/dev/sr0 of=ps2-game.iso bs=2048 status=progress

Treat the command as a pattern, not a universal value. Replace the input only after verifying which device contains the PS2 disc. The output should be a new file on a location with adequate space. An incorrect if or of value can read the wrong device or overwrite existing data. Unmount the disc’s filesystem volumes if your desktop environment has mounted them, but do not remove the disc while the command is running.

CD games

PCSX2 provides separate Linux instructions for CD-based games. Use that CD procedure instead of assuming that the DVD command will preserve every detail needed by a CD image. If your distribution’s graphical tool offers a choice of media type or image format, select the CD option described in the current PCSX2 guide.

Verify the image before troubleshooting the emulator

A file that finishes copying is not necessarily an exact dump. PCSX2 calls a non-identical image a bad dump and notes that it can produce symptoms such as freezing on loading screens.

  1. Open PCSX2 and add or select the image using the emulator’s normal game-library or file-selection interface.
  2. Run the emulator’s documented disc-image verification procedure. Let it finish before changing graphics, speed, or compatibility settings.
  3. If verification fails, inspect the original disc for dirt or damage and clean it appropriately.
  4. Repeat the dump with a lower optical-drive speed when the software exposes that setting. The trade-off is a longer read for a better chance of an exact copy.
  5. If repeated reads fail, test the disc in another compatible optical drive, particularly one confirmed to read DVD-9 dual-layer media for a large DVD game.

Do not use a freeze on a loading screen as proof that the emulator itself is broken until the image has passed verification. A bad read can look like a game-compatibility problem.

Disc image and BIOS are separate requirements

Dumping the game disc does not dump the PlayStation 2 BIOS. PCSX2 states that it cannot play games without a BIOS and describes the BIOS as proprietary software.

The BIOS must be dumped from a PS2 console using the homebrew method described in PCSX2’s official BIOS documentation. It is a separate setup task from creating the game image. Do not place a downloaded BIOS beside the image or assume that an ISO contains firmware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PCSX2’s project policy says users seeking support on its official platforms are expected to own a legally obtained game and a BIOS dumped from a PS2 they own. Keep the BIOS and game image in locations you can identify, and point PCSX2 to each through its own setup screens.

Organize and protect your image files

  • Use a filename that identifies the title without relying on a vague name such as Disc1.iso.
  • Keep a second copy on separate storage if the image is important. An external drive is optional for the dump itself but useful for preserving large image files.
  • Do not edit, compress, or rename an image until verification has completed. Renaming a supported image extension is different from altering its contents.
  • Eject the original disc through the operating system after the tool reports completion.
  • Retain the original media. A backup is not a substitute for checking the disc’s condition or for rights to use the game.

Legal considerations

Copyright and circumvention rules differ by jurisdiction. PCSX2 tells users to review the law where they reside; ownership of a physical disc does not automatically make every copying or circumvention method lawful everywhere.

For U.S. context, the U.S. Copyright Office FAQ says, "Lesson: if you want a backup copy of a lawfully owned computer program, back it up yourself." The same FAQ warns that unauthorized uploading or downloading of copyrighted works may infringe reproduction or distribution rights. That guidance is not a universal ruling on every PS2-disc method, emulator configuration, or circumvention scenario.

The U.S. Copyright Office’s 37 CFR 201.40 exemptions apply to defined works and conditions, including particular motion-picture and institutional situations. They should not be read as a blanket personal videogame-disc copying exemption. If the legality of your game, region, tool, or intended use is uncertain, obtain advice specific to your jurisdiction.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Symptom Likely issue Action
The drive does not detect the disc The drive may not support the disc’s CD, DVD, or DVD-9 media, or the connection may not be working. Try another compatible drive, check the USB connection, and confirm support for the disc type.
The dump completes but PCSX2 freezes while loading PCSX2 identifies bad, non-identical images as a possible cause. Run verification, clean the original disc, and repeat the read at a lower speed.
A macOS image is rejected because of its extension Disk Utility produced a .cdr filename. After completion, rename the extension to .iso; the data itself is unchanged.
A Linux command gives an error or reads the wrong device /dev/sr0 is only a common example and device names vary. Identify the actual optical device, verify the input and output paths, and rerun the command only after checking them.
The game image works but PCSX2 will not start the game The BIOS has not been configured or was not dumped from a PS2. Complete the separate BIOS-dumping and BIOS-selection steps in PCSX2.
The installer offers unrelated software Some ImgBurn installer paths may present OpenCandy offers. Decline optional offers and follow the current PCSX2 acquisition guidance.

A safe, repeatable workflow

  1. Identify whether the game is CD-based, DVD-based, or a larger DVD-9 title.
  2. Confirm that the internal or USB optical drive supports that media.
  3. Choose the PCSX2 procedure for Windows, macOS, or Linux.
  4. Dump the disc without interrupting the read.
  5. Keep the original disc untouched until the image has been verified.
  6. Verify the image in PCSX2 and repeat at a lower speed if necessary.
  7. Dump and configure a BIOS separately from a PS2 console you own.
  8. Use the image and BIOS only in ways permitted by the law in your jurisdiction.

The result should be a verified game image that PCSX2 can read, paired with a separately obtained BIOS and a workflow that protects both your hardware and your data.
