Use a computer optical drive that supports the disc you own, create a disc image with the PCSX2 project’s operating-system-specific dumping method, and verify the result before doing anything with a PS5. PlayStation 2 software was distributed on both CDs and DVDs, and the CD and DVD procedures are not interchangeable. The PS5SX2 project documents .iso, .chd, .cso, and .zso game files, but it requires you to provide your own game images and PS2 BIOS. Creating an image is a separate task from modifying a PS5 or bypassing its security; platform terms and local law still apply.

What a PS2 disc backup is

A disc backup is a file that represents the contents of your original PS2 CD or DVD. The PCSX2 project’s “Dumping Discs” documentation states: “PlayStation 2 game discs are unencrypted DVDs and CDs which can be dumped quickly using a standard optical disc drive that supports DVD and CD media.” That means the first requirement is ordinary reading hardware, not a special PlayStation accessory.

The image is normally kept on a computer for verification and storage. If a later application documents support for that image type, you can supply the file according to that application’s own requirements. The act of reading your disc and saving an image does not install software on a PS5, change console security, or establish that a particular use is permitted where you live.

Check the drive and the disc before you begin

Identify the physical media and confirm that the computer or attached drive can read it. A drive advertised only for DVDs is not automatically suitable for a PS2 CD. If the computer has no internal optical drive, a USB DVD drive that also reads CDs is a reasonable optional choice, provided its specifications match the actual disc.

PS2 media Drive capability to confirm Instruction route
DVD game A standard optical drive with DVD-reading support Use the PCSX2 DVD-dumping instructions for your operating system
CD game A standard optical drive with CD-reading support; DVD-only hardware is insufficient Use the PCSX2 CD-specific route rather than assuming the DVD procedure will work
Unknown or mixed collection Check every disc’s media type and the drive’s specifications Select the corresponding CD or DVD instructions for each disc

Inspect the disc for dirt, fingerprints, or visible damage and clean it according to the disc manufacturer’s normal handling guidance. Do not treat a drive that can physically accept a disc as proof that it can correctly read that disc’s format. If the drive is external, connect it directly and allow the operating system to finish detecting it before opening the dumping software.

Use the correct PCSX2 procedure for your operating system

PCSX2 documents graphical and command-line approaches for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Use the instructions for the operating system running the drive; a command shown for one platform is not a universal command for another. The documentation also separates CD handling from DVD handling, so select the CD-specific path for a CD game.

Windows

On Windows, follow the graphical-tool procedure described in PCSX2’s disc-dumping documentation. Select the physical optical drive that contains the PS2 disc, choose an output location with enough free space, and use the media-specific settings shown by the documentation. If the tool exposes a read-speed choice, a slower setting can take longer but may improve the likelihood of an accurate dump, as PCSX2 notes.

macOS

On macOS, PCSX2 describes both Disk Utility and command-line options. Follow the documented route that matches whether the disc is a CD or DVD and whether you are working in the graphical interface or Terminal. Do not paste a Linux or Windows command into Terminal merely because it appears in an online guide; device names, permissions, and command syntax are operating-system-specific.

Linux

On Linux, use the command-line options documented by PCSX2 for the relevant media. Confirm which device node represents the optical drive before starting, and save the output to a path where your account can write. The exact command and options should come from the current PCSX2 instructions rather than from a copied command intended for different hardware.

Why CD instructions deserve separate attention

CD and DVD workflows can differ in the tools and options they require. A DVD procedure that appears to complete may still be the wrong method for a CD, and a resulting file may not be a faithful image. When a title is on CD, start with PCSX2’s CD-specific instructions even if your drive also reads DVDs.

A careful disc-imaging workflow

  1. Identify the medium. Record whether the game is a CD or DVD. If the packaging or disc markings are unclear, check the drive and operating system’s media information rather than guessing.
  2. Confirm compatible hardware. Use an internal drive or a USB optical drive whose specifications explicitly cover the medium. For a CD, verify CD-reading support; for a DVD, verify DVD-reading support.
  3. Prepare storage. Choose a local destination with sufficient free space and a stable connection. Keep the original disc available until the image has been checked.
  4. Open the matching PCSX2 instructions. Select the Windows, macOS, or Linux procedure and then select the CD or DVD path. Do not combine steps from different operating systems.
  5. Insert the original disc and select the correct drive. If more than one optical drive is connected, verify the selected device by its operating-system label before starting.
  6. Choose a conservative read speed when available. PCSX2 warns that slower drive speeds take longer but can increase the likelihood of a good dump. This is a reliability choice, not a promise that every damaged disc can be recovered.
  7. Write the image to the chosen destination. Let the process finish without ejecting the disc, disconnecting the drive, or putting the computer to sleep. The exact file extension and options depend on the documented tool and media route.
  8. Keep the original and the first image together temporarily. Give the file a clear name that identifies the game and region or edition if that information matters to your collection. Avoid renaming it in a way that hides its actual extension.
  9. Verify the dump. Install PCSX2 if necessary and follow its verification guidance. Verification is a separate step from successfully creating a file; completion of a progress bar alone does not prove that every sector matches the source disc.
  10. Only then evaluate another application’s requirements. If you are preparing the image for a project that documents particular extensions, compare your verified file with that project’s current documentation. Do not alter the PS5 or attempt security-related changes as part of the disc-reading process.

Why verification matters

PCSX2 describes an image that is not identical to the original as a “bad dump.” A bad dump can produce apparently unrelated symptoms, including freezes at loading screens. The most useful time to discover that problem is immediately after imaging, while the physical disc is still available for another attempt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The PCSX2 documentation provides verification guidance after PCSX2 is installed. Follow that guidance for the image you created instead of relying on the filename, file size, or the fact that a media player can see the disc. If verification fails, repeat the dump using the correct CD or DVD route and, where the software permits it, a slower read speed. Try the same disc in a drive known to support its medium before concluding that the source is unusable.

ASUS ZenDrive Black 13mm External 8X DVD/Burner Drive +/-RW with M-Disc Support, Compatible with Both Mac & Windows and Nero BackItUp for Android Devices (USB 2.0 & Type-C Cables Included)
  • 13mm for ultra slim and light
  • Mac/PC Support
  • Includes USB 2. 0 and Type-C cables
  • Nero BackItUp function for Android Devices
  • DISC Encryption II for password-controls and hidden-file functionality

Signs that an image should not be trusted

  • PCSX2 verification reports a mismatch or otherwise rejects the image.
  • The game freezes on a loading screen or at another point where the original disc behaves normally.
  • The dumping tool reports read errors, repeatedly retries sectors, or ends before its documented completion state.
  • The file was made with a DVD procedure even though the source was a CD, or with instructions for a different operating system and device.

Image formats documented by PS5SX2

PS5SX2’s documentation lists four game-file extensions: .iso, .chd, .cso, and .zso. The list tells you which input forms the project documents; it does not mean that every title, build, or storage method has identical compatibility.

Extension What the PS5SX2 documentation establishes What it does not establish
.iso Listed as a supported game-file form That every ISO dump is accurate or that every game works
.chd Listed as a supported game-file form That conversion from another image is always safe or required
.cso Listed as a supported game-file form That a file with this extension will be compatible with every release
.zso Listed as a supported game-file form That the project supports every variant or compression setting

Do not change an extension merely to make a filename match this table. If your verified image is not already in one of the documented forms, consult the current PS5SX2 documentation for any conversion or preparation method it explicitly supports. The available instructions and compatibility work can change, so treat the project’s current documentation as authoritative for a particular release.

Files and prerequisites PS5SX2 says you must provide

PS5SX2 states that users must provide their own PS2 BIOS and their own game files. A BIOS is not supplied by the project, and the project documentation does not turn a downloaded image into a legally sourced copy. Keep the BIOS and game image associated with hardware and software you are entitled to use under the law that applies to you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The project’s instructions describe a jailbroken PS5 and helper or mounting components as prerequisites. Those are console-side requirements, not part of making a disc image on a computer. This article deliberately does not provide instructions for obtaining a jailbreak, bypassing authentication, exploiting a console, or installing security-circumvention tools. Read the current PS5SX2 requirements before making any console changes, because its compatibility work is ongoing.

Keep disc imaging separate from PS5 security

Reading a PS2 disc with a compatible computer drive and saving an image is one activity. Modifying a PS5, loading unauthorized software, bypassing authentication, or exploiting the console is another. A successful dump does not authorize or technically require any particular console modification.

Sony’s US PS5 system software license agreement restricts unauthorized or modified hardware and software, tools that bypass or circumvent PS5 security or authentication, and exploiting the system outside the agreement’s stated authorized uses. It also says the restrictions apply to the greatest extent permitted by local law. The agreement is US-specific and does not decide whether making or using a private copy is lawful in every country or region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before proceeding, determine which law governs you and review the applicable platform terms. Do not treat ownership of an original disc as a blanket assurance that every backup, conversion, emulator, homebrew installation, or console modification is permitted. If the legal position is unclear, obtain advice appropriate to your jurisdiction.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The computer does not see the drive

  • Reconnect the drive directly, allow the operating system time to enumerate it, and check whether the drive appears in the system’s hardware or disk list.
  • Try another USB port or cable if the drive is external, then confirm that the drive’s specifications cover the disc medium.
  • Do not start a dump until the correct physical drive is visible to the selected PCSX2 method.

A DVD works but a CD does not

  • Confirm that the drive reads CDs; DVD-only hardware cannot substitute for CD support.
  • Use PCSX2’s CD-specific procedure rather than repeating the DVD workflow.
  • If the CD route still fails, retry with a different CD-capable drive and inspect the disc for damage.

The dump finishes but PCSX2 reports problems

  • Run the documented verification process. A file that exists can still be a bad dump.
  • Repeat the image with a slower read speed if the tool offers that control.
  • Compare the result from another compatible drive before blaming the emulator or the console-side project.

The file extension is not listed by PS5SX2

Do not rename the file and assume that it has been converted. Preserve the verified original, then consult the current PS5SX2 documentation for an explicitly supported conversion or preparation workflow. If none is documented, the project may not support that form for the release you are considering.

A previously documented PS5SX2 step no longer matches

Recheck the project’s current requirements and release notes. The catalog entry and compatibility status can change, and an old helper component or mounting instruction may no longer apply. Do not infer support from a past version number.

A practical record to keep with each image

Recording the circumstances of a dump makes it easier to diagnose a failure without repeating guesses. For each file, note the game title, disc medium, edition or region information printed on the disc, operating system, optical-drive model, PCSX2 method used, date created, file extension, and verification result. If you repeat the dump, add the read-speed setting and whether a different drive was used.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This record also prevents a common mistake: confusing an unverified file with a verified one after several attempts. Keep the original disc until the image has passed verification and you have confirmed that the file remains readable from its storage location.

What you can conclude—and what you cannot

  • You can conclude that a compatible standard optical drive is sufficient in principle for reading a PS2 CD or DVD, following the appropriate PCSX2 instructions.
  • You can conclude that CD and DVD media require attention to different documented procedures.
  • You can conclude that verification is important because PCSX2 identifies bad dumps as a cause of loading problems.
  • You can conclude that PS5SX2 documents ISO, CHD, CSO, and ZSO game files and requires your own BIOS and games.
  • You cannot conclude that every image is accurate merely because it was created.
  • You cannot conclude that every PS5SX2 release supports every game or that a catalog version will remain current.
  • You cannot conclude that a personal backup or homebrew use is lawful everywhere, or that Sony’s US agreement governs every jurisdiction.

Bottom line

Start with the disc and drive, not the PS5: identify whether the game is a CD or DVD, use the matching PCSX2 procedure for Windows, macOS, or Linux, choose a slower read speed when available, and verify the resulting image. Then compare the verified file with the current PS5SX2 documentation, which lists ISO, CHD, CSO, and ZSO and requires your own BIOS and game files. Treat console modification, security circumvention, platform terms, and local law as separate questions that this imaging workflow does not answer.
