The safest way to preserve a digitally purchased game depends on what you mean by “backup.” A downloadable installer archive, a storefront’s backup package, a copy of an installed game, and offline-play preparation are different things. Start by choosing the outcome you need, then use the game’s own storefront method where one exists. Keep the resulting files on storage you control, preferably with a second independent copy, while remembering that files alone do not preserve your account, license, online services, or future compatibility.
Choose the kind of backup you actually need
Before downloading anything, decide which failure you are preparing for. A restorable archive is intended to let you reinstall later. A storefront backup may reduce redownloading but can still depend on the client. A copy of an installed directory may help with recovery, yet it can omit save data, registry entries, prerequisites, or launcher components. Offline mode is about starting an already installed game without a network connection; it is not proof that you possess a complete installer.
| Approach | What you retain | What restore or use may require | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standalone offline installer | Installer files, patches or data files, and any separately listed downloadable content | Enough local storage; the game may still require an account, DRM, a publisher launcher, or activation | Not every storefront or title provides one, and updates may need to be downloaded again |
| Storefront backup feature | A client-created backup package for compatible games | The storefront client and any services or installers used by the game | Compatibility is title-specific; third-party installers and downloaders can prevent a usable backup |
| Copy of installed game data | Existing program files and sometimes downloaded updates | The same operating system, launcher, prerequisites, and separately backed-up saves or settings | Copying the install folder alone is not a guaranteed reinstall method |
| Offline-play preparation | An installed game and whatever authentication data the launcher permits for offline use | A supported single-player title, prior installation, and any required first-run checks | Online multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements, and other network services may be unavailable |
For a collection you want to keep usable years from now, prioritize a complete installer archive when the storefront offers one. Use a client backup as a convenience, not as a universal preservation format. Treat installed-folder copies and offline mode as separate measures.
What every archive should contain
Installer and data files
Keep every file presented as part of the installation set. Some games split the main installer into multiple archives, companion data files, language packs, or numbered parts. Downloading only the first executable can leave the set unusable. If downloadable content is offered as a separate installer, include it and label it clearly.

Updates and versions
Decide whether you want a fixed version or the newest version available when you archive it. A fixed installer can be valuable for compatibility with an older operating system or mod set, while a newer build may include security and bug fixes. Record the download date and version shown by the storefront. Do not assume that a later update installer will be available immediately: for GOG, post-launch update installers can take several hours to appear after a build is published to the Master branch.
Save games and configuration
Installer files normally do not include personal saves, screenshots, key bindings, or configuration stored outside the game directory. Locate each title’s save and settings locations separately, which may be under the user profile, a documents folder, a platform cloud directory, or a publisher-specific location. Export or copy those files while the game is closed, and note the path in a text file stored with the archive. Cloud synchronization is useful, but it should not be your only copy.
Requirements and notes
Store a short readme beside the files containing the game name, edition, version, downloadable-content list, operating system used, required launcher or account, and any activation instructions. This turns an anonymous collection of large files into an archive you can identify later.
GOG: download the offline backup installer set
GOG provides offline backup game installers for purchases. The exact account-page layout can change, so use the current purchase or library page and look for the option labeled “DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS”. The support search result that documents this wording is the basis for the label; if your page uses a different arrangement, follow the current GOG account instructions.
- Sign in to the account that owns the game and open the title’s purchase or library details.
- Choose “DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS” rather than downloading only through the client.
- Download the complete installer set. Include every numbered part, companion data file, language component, and separately displayed DLC installer that you intend to preserve.
- Place the files in a folder named with the title, edition, and version. Keep the original filenames unchanged.
- Copy that folder to storage you control, then make a second copy if the game or collection is important.
- After downloading, open the installer or use its built-in verification option on a test machine when practical. A small test confirms that all parts are present before the original download is discarded.
Offline installers are generated after a build is published to GOG’s Master branch. A post-launch update installer may therefore appear several hours after the update itself. If you are expecting a newly released patch and cannot find it, wait and check the title’s offline-download area again rather than assuming the archive is complete.

An offline installer does not automatically remove account or technology dependencies. A game can still use digital-rights management, a publisher launcher, or online services. Keep the account credentials and any legitimate activation information needed by the title, and check the game’s current terms before redistributing files.
Steam: use Backup only when the game is compatible
Steam has an official Backup feature, but it is not a universal archive format. Steam Support states that games which use third-party installers or downloaders may not work with the feature. The supported case is a game that completely downloads, installs, and patches through Steam.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Open Steam’s current Backup interface from the client and select the game you want to preserve.
- Choose a destination with enough free space and allow Steam to create the backup files.
- Record the game title, edition, and date in the destination folder.
- When you need the game again, use Steam’s restore option and follow the client’s current prompts.
Steam’s support instructions also identify the game-installation and backup-file locations. Consult the current Steam Support page for the exact menu labels and restore procedure, because the client interface changes. Do not treat a successful-looking folder copy as evidence that the backup is restorable.
For a title with a separate installer, downloader, launcher, or anti-cheat component, test the backup before relying on it. You may need the third-party service, an internet connection, or a fresh download even after restoring Steam’s files. Steam Backup also does not promise to preserve saves and configuration stored outside the game’s installation directory; copy those separately.
Epic Games Store: distinguish Offline Mode from an archive
Epic’s launcher Offline Mode is intended for supported single-player games that are already installed on the device. Epic says that not all games support it. While offline, online multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements, and other online services may be unavailable.

- In the Epic launcher, enable its current Offline Mode setting before disconnecting. The wording and location of launcher settings can change, so use the current Epic help instructions if the label is not visible.
- Disconnect temporarily and start the game to verify that this particular title works without a connection.
- Reconnect and synchronize or copy saves before making further changes to the installation.
Offline Mode is an operational test, not a downloadable standalone installer. It does not establish that you can restore the game on a new computer without the launcher, an account, or an internet connection.

Epic’s End User License Agreement says, The Software is licensed, not sold, to you under the License.
The agreement also notes that, in rare cases, software may be removed from the Store and become unavailable for further download or access, and it restricts copying except where the agreement or applicable game-specific terms authorize it. Keeping a local copy is therefore a practical preservation step, not a legal workaround or a guarantee of permanent playability. Account access, digital-rights management, publisher launchers, servers, and title-specific terms can still control access.
Copying an installed game: useful, but incomplete by itself
If a storefront offers no offline installer and its backup feature is incompatible, copying the installed game directory can save time and bandwidth. Close the game and launcher first so files are not changing while you copy them. Preserve the entire directory tree, including hidden files when applicable, and keep the original path in your notes.
On the destination computer, install the same storefront client and let it recognize the game’s library location. A “verify” or “locate existing files” action may prevent a full redownload, but the client can still replace files, download missing prerequisites, or require an update. If the title uses a separate publisher launcher or anti-cheat service, install and authenticate that component as well.
Copy saves and settings independently. They may live outside the installation directory, and a cloud service may overwrite them during the first synchronization. Before launching a restored copy, decide whether the local save or the cloud version is authoritative and keep a backup of both.

Where to store the archive
A portable external hard drive is a practical place for installer and backup files because it can hold a large collection without occupying the computer’s internal drive. It is an inference from the storage needs of these workflows, not a storefront requirement. Choose capacity by measuring your current library and leaving room for future updates; no single capacity fits every collection.
- Use a clear hierarchy: storefront, game title, edition, version, then installer parts, DLC, saves, and notes.
- Keep files together: do not split a multi-part installer set across unrelated devices unless your notes explain where every part is.
- Maintain a second independent copy: a single drive can fail, be lost, or be damaged. Store the second copy separately when possible.
- Protect against accidental changes: disconnect the archive drive when it is not being updated, and avoid editing the original installer files.
- Check readability periodically: open a sample archive or run an installer test, and replace a drive that reports errors before it becomes your only copy.
Do not confuse redundancy with synchronization. Two copies that remain plugged into the same computer can be altered or deleted by the same mistake. Independence matters more than duplicating a folder in place.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to verify a backup before you need it
Verify completeness
Compare the downloaded file list with the storefront’s displayed components. Check that all numbered parts, data files, language files, patches, and DLC are present. If the storefront shows a total download size, use it as a rough check, not as a substitute for testing.
Verify the storage copy
After copying to external storage, safely eject the drive and reconnect it. Confirm that the folder opens and that representative files can be read. For a large collection, create checksums with a trusted local utility and save the results in the archive; a later checksum mismatch identifies changed or damaged files.

Verify restoration or launch
Test one complete restore from the archive, or install the game on a spare system when practical. For Steam, test the client’s restore workflow. For an offline installer, run the installer through to the point where it asks for the destination. For Epic, test Offline Mode with the network disabled after the title has been installed and authenticated. A test performed while the original installation is still available gives you a recovery path if the archive is incomplete.

Common failure modes and fixes
The installer is missing a part
Return to the title’s download page and look for companion files, numbered archives, language packs, or separate DLC installers. Keep the complete set in one folder and avoid renaming parts that the installer expects to find.
A Steam backup will not restore
Check whether the game uses a third-party installer or downloader. Steam’s Backup feature is limited to titles that completely download, install, and patch through Steam. If that condition is not met, retain the original installer or use the publisher’s authorized recovery method instead.
The game launches only when online
Determine whether the title, launcher, DRM, multiplayer service, or first-run activation requires a connection. Epic Offline Mode applies only to supported games already installed, and it does not preserve network services. A local archive cannot bypass those requirements.
Saves disappeared after reinstalling
Locate the game’s save and configuration paths before uninstalling. Restore those files separately and prevent a cloud client from overwriting them until you have chosen which version to keep.
The storefront no longer offers the game
A local copy may give you files to retain, but it does not guarantee that the license, account, launcher, activation server, or operating-system support will remain available. Keep installation notes and legitimate account information, and review the title’s terms rather than assuming that possession of files grants unrestricted use.
A practical archive routine for a growing library
- Classify the title: mark it as offline-installer, compatible storefront backup, installed-copy only, or offline-play tested.
- Download or copy the complete set: include DLC and companion files, then record version and date.
- Back up saves separately: include configuration and screenshots that matter to you.
- Store two copies: keep one on an external drive and one on another independent device or location.
- Test a sample: verify files and perform a restore or offline launch before deleting the original installation.
- Review after major updates: decide whether to retain the older known-good version, the new version, or both.
Review storefront instructions before relying on a detailed click path. The GOG and Steam support pages used for the current guidance did not expose all article text in the available view, and interfaces, compatibility, license terms, and offline features can change. The labels and limits described above are accurate to the official information available on October 13, 2026, but a current support page should take precedence when your client presents different options.
What a local archive can—and cannot—preserve
A local archive preserves data you can download and keep: installer packages, patches that were actually provided, installed files, and separately copied saves. It does not automatically preserve a storefront account, a license grant, a publisher login, a working activation server, online multiplayer, cloud synchronization, achievements, or compatibility with a future operating system. That distinction is why the best plan combines a complete file set, separate save backups, documented dependencies, and more than one readable storage copy.
