Before sending a Kindle for repair, replacing it, or factory-resetting it, connect it to Wi‑Fi and run Sync (or Sync and Check for Items). Kindle sync saves your reading position, notes, and highlights to Amazon’s servers. Confirm that the data appears on another Kindle surface, keep the original files for personal documents, and only then reset or hand over the old device.
What Kindle sync actually backs up
Amazon’s “Update Your Sync Settings for Kindle” guidance says that sync automatically backs up and saves data from Kindle devices and apps, including your reading position, notes, and highlights, to Amazon’s servers. Sync is enabled by default, but the Kindle must have an internet connection for the upload to occur.
That backup is tied to the Amazon account used on the device. After a repair or replacement, a Kindle or Kindle app registered to the same account can receive the supported synced information. Sync is not the same as copying every file from the device: it does not establish a universal, user-downloadable archive containing every purchased book, personal document, and annotation type.
Information normally covered by account sync
- Reading position in supported Kindle books and documents.
- Text notes and highlights that Kindle sync supports across devices and apps.
- Other account-linked reading data that becomes available when the same account is used on another Kindle surface.
Information that needs extra care
- Downloaded copies stored locally on the old Kindle are removed by a factory reset.
- Anything that has not finished syncing can be lost during a reset.
- Personal-document files should be retained independently; file transfer support does not prove that all associated annotations are preserved in a separate archive.
- Handwritten Scribe annotations follow different rules from ordinary text notes and highlights.
Do this before a repair, replacement, or reset
- Connect to Wi‑Fi. From the Kindle’s menu or quick-settings area, select an available wireless network and complete the connection. Sync cannot upload changes while the device is offline.
- Run a manual sync. Open the menu and choose Sync or Sync and Check for Items. The exact wording and location can vary by Kindle software version. Wait for the operation to finish before turning the device off or starting a reset.
- Open recently changed books and documents. Check the latest page, note, and highlight you created. This confirms that the changes are present on the device before you verify them elsewhere.
- Verify on another linked Kindle surface. Open the Kindle app or another Kindle registered to the same Amazon account and check a recent reading position, note, or highlight. Amazon says synced highlights and text annotations are accessible across Kindle surfaces. Treat this as a practical confirmation, not a guarantee that every annotation format is supported everywhere.
- Record the account used by the old Kindle. In the Kindle’s settings, identify the Amazon account to which it is registered. The replacement must use the account that owns the purchases; a different account will not show that account’s library.
- Keep personal-document originals. Preserve the source files on a computer or other storage that you control. If you used USB transfer, Send to Kindle, or another supported import method, retain your original copy rather than assuming the Kindle itself is the only copy.
- Only after verification, proceed with repair or reset. If the device is being mailed, follow the repair provider’s instructions for deregistration and personal-data removal. If you are performing a factory reset yourself, finish sync first.
How to check that sync has completed
Use the device’s sync command
A manual sync command is the clearest way to submit recent changes before the Kindle becomes unavailable. If the command reports an error, leave Wi‑Fi enabled and retry. Do not interpret the presence of a book on the device as proof that its latest notes or highlights have reached Amazon’s servers.

Check from a second Kindle surface
Use a Kindle app, another Kindle e-reader, or another supported Kindle surface signed in to the same account. Locate the title and inspect the most recent reading position, text note, or highlight. A successful check on a second surface demonstrates that the item is available through the account, while the absence of a personal document or handwritten mark may reflect compatibility limits rather than a failed Wi‑Fi connection.
Allow for the exact content type
Amazon’s personal-document compatibility information distinguishes between handwritten notes, text notes, highlights, underlines, and Scribe active-canvas content. It also states that Kindle Web does not currently support personal documents. Therefore, verify a personal document in a Kindle device or app that supports that document type instead of relying on Kindle Web as the test.
What happens when you factory-reset a Kindle
Amazon’s “Factory Reset Your Kindle E-Reader” help page states that a factory reset returns the device to its original factory settings, removing personal data, downloaded content, and content that has not been synced. The reset also deregisters the Kindle.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Local downloads disappear from the e-reader.
- Personal information stored on the device is removed.
- Unsynced reading data, notes, and highlights are at risk because the reset deletes them before they reach Amazon’s servers.
- The device is deregistered and must be registered again before it can access the account library.
A reset is not a backup operation. Use it only after the manual sync and verification steps are complete. If a repair center requests a reset, perform the sync while the device still works, then reset it according to the center’s instructions.
Recover purchased Kindle books after replacement or reset
Purchased books belong to the Amazon account that bought them. After the replacement Kindle is registered to that account, the books can be delivered again through Manage Your Content and Devices. Select the title and choose the registered Kindle as the delivery destination. If the title does not appear immediately, connect the new Kindle to Wi‑Fi and run its sync command.

Account and device checks
- Confirm that the new Kindle is registered to the same Amazon account used for the original purchase.
- Check that Wi‑Fi is connected and run Sync or Sync and Check for Items.
- In Manage Your Content and Devices, verify that the replacement appears among the account’s registered devices.
- Use the library’s filters carefully; a title can be hidden when a filter is set to a different content type.
- Use the delivery command for a specific purchased title when automatic library synchronization does not bring it down.
Re-delivery restores account-purchased books. It is not evidence that every personal document, sideloaded file, or annotation has a separate downloadable copy in the account.
Personal documents: keep a separate file copy
Amazon supports moving documents to Kindle by USB and through Send to Kindle. Those are transfer methods, not a documented guarantee of a complete annotation export. Keep the original PDF, EPUB, DOCX, or other source file outside the Kindle before repair or replacement.
Why the source file matters
A personal document may be present only as a local download, may have been sent from a computer that you no longer use, or may have annotations whose behavior depends on the device and format. If the Kindle is reset before you retain the source, re-creating the document can be difficult even when some synced reading data remains available.
What Amazon’s compatibility distinctions mean
Annotation support varies by device and app. Text notes, highlights, underlines, handwritten notes, and Scribe active-canvas features are not interchangeable categories. A workflow that works for a purchased Kindle book may not preserve a handwritten mark on a personal document. Check the target device’s supported annotation type before assuming that a replacement will display the same controls.
Special warning for Kindle Scribe and cloud-drive imports
For Kindle Scribe models released in 2025 or later, Amazon warns that annotations added to files imported from Google Drive or OneDrive do not sync back to the original file in that cloud drive. The annotation may exist on the Scribe, but the source document in the drive is not updated automatically.

Before sending such a Scribe for repair or replacing it, retain the original cloud-drive file and create the PDF copy Amazon recommends uploading when you need the annotated version outside the Scribe. This warning applies specifically to Scribe models released in 2025 or later and to files imported from those two cloud-drive services.
Recovery routes by content and annotation type
| What you need back | Primary recovery route | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Purchased Kindle books | Register the replacement to the purchasing Amazon account; deliver titles from Manage Your Content and Devices. | Only account-purchased titles are covered by this route. |
| Reading position, text notes, and highlights | Run sync before the old device is reset, then use another Kindle surface signed in to the same account. | Unsynced changes can be removed by a reset; support differs by content and app. |
| Personal-document files | Retain the original files and resend them by USB or Send to Kindle when needed. | File transfer does not establish a complete annotation archive. |
| Handwritten Scribe annotations | Verify on another supported Kindle Scribe surface and preserve any exported or PDF copy available for the document. | Handwritten annotations are not treated like ordinary text annotations, and compatibility depends on device and format. |
| Scribe files imported from Google Drive or OneDrive (2025-or-later models) | Keep the drive original and upload a PDF copy of the annotated file when you need an external copy. | Annotations do not sync back to the original cloud-drive file. |
Repair versus replacement: choose the safe sequence
If the Kindle still turns on
- Connect to Wi‑Fi and run the manual sync command.
- Verify a recent note or highlight on another supported Kindle surface.
- Confirm the Amazon account and retain personal-document source files.
- Follow the repair provider’s instructions for removing personal data or shipping the device.
If the Kindle is being replaced immediately
- Complete the same sync and verification sequence before handing over the old device.
- Register the replacement with the purchasing Amazon account.
- Sync the replacement and deliver missing purchased titles from Manage Your Content and Devices.
- Resend personal documents from your retained copies.
If the Kindle cannot connect or will not start
You cannot confirm a final upload from a device that never reconnects. Do not assume that its most recent local notes are recoverable. On the replacement, register the same account and check what is already available through sync and account delivery. For personal documents, use the copies you kept outside the Kindle. Amazon’s documented workflows do not provide a promise that unsynced annotations can be reconstructed.
Troubleshoot missing books, notes, or highlights
A purchased book is missing
- Check that the replacement uses the purchasing account, not a different household or work account.
- Connect to Wi‑Fi and run the sync command.
- Open Manage Your Content and Devices and deliver the title directly to the registered replacement.
- Review library filters so the title is not hidden by a content-type selection.
A recent note or highlight is missing
- Return to the old Kindle, if available, connect it to Wi‑Fi, and run Sync again.
- Check the same title on a supported Kindle app or device signed in to the same account.
- Confirm whether the item is a text annotation or a handwritten Scribe mark; they do not share identical support.
- Do not reset the old device while the change remains unverified.
A personal document is missing
- Look for the retained original file and resend it using USB or Send to Kindle.
- Check the target device’s document and annotation compatibility.
- For a 2025-or-later Scribe file imported from Google Drive or OneDrive, look for a PDF copy rather than expecting the cloud-drive original to contain the annotations.
A low-risk handoff sequence
Think of the process as two separate handoffs: first, move account-linked information to Amazon’s servers; second, make sure files that live outside that account are still in your possession. Do not treat a replacement purchase, a repair shipment, or a reset as the backup step.
- Inventory what matters. List purchased books, recently edited notes, highlights, personal documents, and any Scribe handwritten work. This prevents a document from being overlooked simply because purchased books appear normally on the replacement.
- Sync while the original is usable. Connect to Wi‑Fi and issue the manual sync command. If you recently added several notes, open the relevant titles and run sync again rather than relying only on an earlier automatic sync.
- Test representative items. Check at least one purchased book, one recent text annotation, and one personal document on a supported second surface. This is a verification sample, not proof that unsupported annotation types have been archived.
- Preserve files before shipping. Copy source documents from the computer, cloud service, or other location where they originated. For Scribe cloud-drive imports, keep both the unannotated original and any PDF copy containing the marks.
- Reset only when required. A repair provider may have its own instructions. Follow them after synchronization and file preservation, remembering that reset deregisters the Kindle and removes local downloads.
Keep these distinctions straight
Sync is account recovery. It makes supported reading position, notes, and highlights available on linked Kindle surfaces. Delivery is library recovery. Manage Your Content and Devices can send purchased books to a registered Kindle. File retention is document recovery. Keeping a PDF, EPUB, DOCX, or other source outside the e-reader gives you a way to resend a personal document even when the Kindle account does not provide a complete annotation archive.
These routes overlap, but they are not interchangeable. A book that can be redelivered is not proof that a sideloaded file can be downloaded again. A text highlight visible in the Kindle app is not proof that a handwritten Scribe canvas is portable to every device. A file imported from Google Drive or OneDrive is not updated in that drive merely because it was annotated on a 2025-or-later Scribe.

What you can and cannot count on
You can count on Amazon’s documented sync process to back up supported reading position, notes, and highlights when the Kindle is online and the changes have synchronized. You can re-deliver purchased books to a Kindle registered to the account that bought them. You should not count on a factory reset preserving local data, on USB or Send to Kindle creating a complete annotation archive, or on every handwritten and personal-document annotation appearing identically on every Kindle surface.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will I lose my Kindle notes and highlights if I replace the device?
Not if the supported changes have synchronized before the old Kindle is reset or surrendered. Connect it to Wi‑Fi, run Sync or Sync and Check for Items, and verify a recent note or highlight on another Kindle device or app using the same Amazon account. Unsynced changes can be removed by a reset.
How do I get purchased Kindle books back after a factory reset?
Register the reset or replacement Kindle to the Amazon account that purchased the books, connect it to Wi‑Fi, and sync. If a title is missing, open Manage Your Content and Devices and deliver it directly to the registered Kindle. Check library filters if it still does not appear.
Does Kindle sync create a downloadable backup of every book and annotation?
No universal archive is established. Sync backs up supported reading position, notes, and highlights to Amazon’s servers, while purchased books can be redelivered through the account. Personal-document files and some annotation types require separate protection.
Can I back up Kindle personal documents with USB or Send to Kindle?
Those methods transfer documents to Kindle, but they are not documented as a complete export of every associated annotation. Keep the original PDF, EPUB, DOCX, or other source file on storage you control, then resend it when needed.

Do handwritten Kindle Scribe notes sync like text highlights?
No. Amazon distinguishes handwritten annotations from text notes, highlights, underlines, and Scribe active-canvas content. Handwritten annotations are currently accessible across Kindle Scribe devices, not universally across every Kindle surface, so verify them on a supported Scribe and preserve any available PDF copy.
What happens to a Kindle file imported from Google Drive or OneDrive?
On Kindle Scribe models released in 2025 or later, annotations added to those imported files do not sync back to the original cloud-drive file. Keep the original and upload a PDF copy of the annotated file when you need the marked-up version outside the Scribe.
Can Kindle Web verify a personal document before repair?
Amazon’s compatibility information says Kindle Web does not currently support personal documents. Use a Kindle e-reader or app that supports the document and annotation type you need to check.

The Bottom Line
Before repair, replacement, or reset, connect the Kindle to Wi‑Fi, run Sync, and verify a recent annotation on another supported Kindle surface.
