If you heard that OneDrive is ending, check which service the notice names: the reported change concerns Samsung Gallery’s OneDrive sync, not a general shutdown of OneDrive on iPhone. Microsoft still documents OneDrive photo uploads for iOS. To protect your data, first verify what is already in OneDrive, then make another copy that suits your needs.
Photos, files stored in OneDrive, and a full iPhone device backup are different things. This guide covers each without assuming that a setting being switched on means a backup has finished.
Does OneDrive stop working on iPhone?
The reported September 30 end date relates to Samsung Gallery’s integration with OneDrive. That is separate from the OneDrive iPhone app and its Camera Upload feature. Microsoft’s current support instructions still cover photo and video uploads from iOS, and its App Store listing describes the app. This does not guarantee that services will never change; it means the reported Samsung change is not evidence of a general iPhone shutdown.
If you received a specific notice, check the exact app, account, device, and service it identifies. A work or school account may also be subject to the organization’s access and retention rules, which can differ from a personal account.

Check your existing OneDrive backup before changing anything
- Open OneDrive and confirm you are signed in to the account that is supposed to hold your photos and files.
- Open the Camera Roll folder. Depending on your settings and library, look in year or month subfolders too.
- Check recent and older photos, plus videos you expect to have uploaded. Open a few items to confirm they are accessible from OneDrive, rather than relying only on the iPhone’s Camera Upload setting.
- In OneDrive’s Camera Upload settings, check whether uploads remain. Wait for the remaining-upload count to clear before treating the camera roll as copied.
Microsoft says storage overage can prevent new uploads, and large uploads may take time. During an upload, leave OneDrive running rather than signing out or reinstalling the app. For troubleshooting, Microsoft identifies factors such as device charge, Low Power Mode, background refresh, force-closing the app, and cellular settings. See Microsoft’s OneDrive mobile troubleshooting guide.
Finish or manually upload photos and files to OneDrive
Check Camera Upload and video settings
- In OneDrive, tap your profile image, then Settings and Camera Upload.
- Confirm that Camera Upload is enabled for the account you intend to use.
- If you want videos uploaded, enable Include Videos.
- For a large upload, Microsoft offers Bedtime Backup; use Wi-Fi and connect the phone to power.
- Wait for uploads to complete, then inspect the files in OneDrive.
Microsoft describes Camera Upload as one-way from the device camera roll to OneDrive. Deleting an uploaded item from the iPhone does not delete its OneDrive copy. That behavior applies to this Camera Upload feature; do not assume it applies to every synced folder or file operation.

Upload selected photos, videos, or other files
For items that Camera Upload missed, use the OneDrive app’s add or upload action to select photos, videos, files, or folders. The manual-upload option is useful for targeted items, but Microsoft says this route cannot upload iCloud-optimized photos. If the original media is not downloaded to the iPhone, use another supported way to obtain the original before relying on a manual upload.
Follow Microsoft’s manual upload instructions for iOS and verify that the selected items appear in the intended OneDrive account.

Choose a second backup based on what you need to recover
| Option | Best for | What it preserves | Key constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| OneDrive Camera Upload or manual upload | Continuing to store camera-roll items and selected files in your Microsoft account | Photos and videos uploaded from the camera roll, plus items you manually select | Check the right account, video setting, storage availability, and upload completion. Microsoft says iCloud-optimized photos cannot be manually uploaded through its documented iOS path. |
| iCloud Backup | Restoring broader iPhone data if the device is lost, damaged, or replaced | A device backup as defined by Apple | Requires available iCloud storage and is distinct from iCloud Photos. |
| iCloud Photos | Keeping the photo and video library available across Apple devices | The original full-resolution photo and video library in iCloud | Uses iCloud storage; check that you have enough available space. |
| Mac or PC import, optionally followed by a second copy | Keeping a computer-based copy you can access outside a cloud account | Photos and videos imported to the computer | Requires a computer and cable. On Windows, if iCloud Photos is enabled, download originals to the iPhone or iPad before importing. |

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse iCloud Backup for broader iPhone recovery
iCloud Backup is for restoring device data if your iPhone is lost, damaged, or replaced. It is not the same as keeping a separately browsable photo library synced across Apple devices; that is what iCloud Photos is for.
- On the iPhone, go to Settings > your name > iCloud > iCloud Backup.
- Turn on iCloud Backup if you want automatic device backups.
- For automatic backup, connect to power and Wi-Fi and keep the iPhone locked.
- Check the last-backup date in the iCloud Backup settings before relying on it.
Apple’s current instructions, published September 24, 2026, are at How to back up your iPhone or iPad with iCloud. Check available iCloud storage as part of setup; a backup setting alone does not confirm that a recent backup completed.

Use iCloud Photos if you want the library synced across Apple devices
iCloud Photos keeps the photo and video library available through iCloud across supported Apple devices. It uses iCloud storage and is a library-syncing service, not a substitute for the broader device-recovery role of iCloud Backup. Confirm that your iCloud account has enough space and that the photos and videos you need are available before removing local copies.
Apple’s instructions are at Set up and use iCloud Photos.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Import iPhone photos and videos to a Mac or PC
A computer import gives you a copy outside OneDrive and iCloud. Connect the iPhone to the computer with a USB cable, unlock it, and use the computer’s photo-import workflow to transfer the items. Wait for the import to finish, then open the destination folder or photo library and verify that expected photos and videos are present.

On Windows, Apple says to install the Apple Devices app for the connection workflow. If iCloud Photos is enabled, download the originals to the iPhone or iPad before importing. Apple’s transfer instructions, updated September 14, 2026, are at Transfer photos and videos from your iPhone or iPad to your Mac or PC.
After importing, you can optionally copy the computer files to a portable external SSD for another local copy. Drive, port, and file-system compatibility depend on your computer and workflow; the SSD is an additional destination, not a requirement for importing.
Copy files from OneDrive through the iPhone Files app
If the item is a document or other file in OneDrive rather than a camera-roll photo, Apple supports adding third-party cloud services such as OneDrive to the Files app. The exact interface may vary by iOS version.
- Install and sign in to the OneDrive app, if you have not already.
- In Files, open Browse and add or enable OneDrive under Locations if it is available there.
- Find the file, then use the Files app’s copy or move action to place it in a different supported location.
- Open the destination and verify the file before removing the original.
Copying leaves the original in place; moving relocates it. Confirm which action you selected and that the destination copy opens. Apple’s guide, updated October 8, 2026, is Use third-party cloud apps in the Files app.
Verify every copy before deleting originals
- For OneDrive, check the correct account, expected photos and videos, and whether uploads remain.
- For iCloud Backup, check the last-backup date in Settings.
- For a computer import, confirm the imported files are present and openable on the computer.
- For a Files app copy, open the destination item before removing the source.
Keep the iPhone originals until you have checked the destination copy you intend to rely on. A cloud sync setting, upload toggle, or import starting is not by itself proof that every item has arrived.
