To back up iPhone contacts to Gmail, first decide whether you want ongoing Google Contacts sync or a copy of contacts currently stored in iCloud. Adding a Google Account to your iPhone syncs contacts already in that Google Account; it does not automatically move iCloud-only contacts. For those, export a vCard from iCloud.com and import it into Google Contacts.
Choose between syncing and copying contacts
“Gmail contacts” usually means contacts stored in Google Contacts, which you can access with your Google Account. There are two different ways to put them on an iPhone:

Google describes the sync behavior this way: “When you update a contact, it syncs with your iPhone and anywhere you’re signed in to your Google Account.” (Google Account Help)
Keep Google Contacts syncing with your iPhone
- On the iPhone, open Settings.
- Tap Apps > Contacts. Depending on the iOS version or account setup, account controls may instead appear as Accounts or Contacts Accounts.
- Tap Add Account > Google. If the Google Account is already listed, open its account entry.
- Sign in to the Google Account that contains the contacts you want to use.
- Turn on Contacts in the account’s sync options, then tap Save.
- Open the iPhone Contacts app to start the sync. To check what is stored in Google, open Google Contacts on the web while signed in to the same account.
These steps connect the iPhone to Google-account contacts. If your records are stored only in iCloud or locally on the iPhone, use the copy workflow below to put them in Google Contacts.

Copy iCloud contacts to Google Contacts
Use this workflow when the contacts you want are in iCloud and you want a copy in a Google Account. Apple’s documented export process uses iCloud.com on a tablet or computer.
- On a tablet or computer, go to icloud.com/contacts and sign in to the Apple Account that holds the contacts.
- Select one contact, several contacts, or all contacts. Apple documents choosing all contacts from the Actions menu; selecting multiple contacts produces one vCard file.
- Choose Share > Export vCard and save the resulting contact file. Apple notes that exporting all contacts as one vCard can serve as a backup. See Apple’s iCloud contact export instructions.
- Open Google Contacts on the web and sign in to the Google Account that should receive the contacts.
- Choose Import > Select file, select the saved
.vcffile, then choose Import. Google Contacts accepts vCard and CSV files; see Google’s import instructions. - Check that the imported records appear in the intended Google Account. If you want them on the iPhone, enable Contacts for that Google Account in iPhone Settings and open the Contacts app.
Exporting a vCard copies contacts; the cited instructions do not say that the export removes them from iCloud. Keep iCloud enabled until you have checked the Google copy. The Google sync setting maintains records in the Google Account, not the original iCloud-only records, so repeat the export and import when you need to refresh that copy after changes.
Export contacts from another source on the iPhone
Apple also supports exporting some or all contacts directly from the iPhone Contacts app: touch and hold a list, tap Export, choose fields, then send or save the contact cards. The precise handoff depends on how iOS shares or saves the file. If you obtain a .vcf file, import it through Google Contacts on the web. See Apple’s iPhone export steps.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Opening a .vcf attachment in an email or message imports contacts to the iPhone; it is not the same as importing them to Google Contacts. To store a copy in Google, use Google Contacts’ web import workflow. Apple explains the iPhone attachment behavior in its iPhone contact import guide.

Keep iCloud and Google syncs distinct
If your iPhone contacts come from iCloud, Apple’s setting is Settings > [your name] > iCloud > See All > Contacts. iCloud keeps those contacts current across devices signed in to that Apple Account. This is a separate sync system from Google Contacts; enabling one does not automatically copy contacts into the other. See Apple’s guide to syncing contacts across devices.
Fix common sync and import problems
Google contacts are missing from the iPhone
- Go to Settings > Apps > Contacts > Accounts or Contacts Accounts, open the Google Account, and confirm that Contacts is enabled.
- Open the iPhone Contacts app to start the sync.
- Check Google Contacts on the web with the same account. If the contacts are absent there, you may be signed in to a different account or the records may still be stored in iCloud.
Google sync still does not work
Google’s iPhone troubleshooting guidance says to check the account’s Advanced settings, turn on Use SSL, save, and try adding the account again if needed. Follow Google’s iPhone and iPad sync troubleshooting steps.
Imported contact details seem incomplete
Open the contact in Google Contacts and check its Notes section. Google says some imported details may appear there rather than in the expected fields.
The import is large or exceeds an account limit
Google recommends splitting imports larger than 3,000 contacts into multiple CSV files. Google Contacts lists an account limit of 25,000 contacts. These are product limits stated in Google Contacts Help; the 3,000 figure is the point at which Google recommends splitting an import, not a guarantee about how long an import takes.
Quick Recap
Only some contacts appear after copying
- Check whether you exported one contact, selected contacts, or all contacts from iCloud.
- Confirm that the vCard was imported while signed in to the Google Account you intended to use.
- If the missing contacts remain in a different source, export that source’s contacts separately and import its vCard if available.
