Back up an indie game save by first identifying the platform and storefront, then confirming that the individual game has a current cloud backup or a documented save location. Keep the old device untouched until you have opened the save successfully on the replacement. A game installation, cartridge, or removable game library does not automatically carry its save data.
There is no universal transfer procedure. Steam Cloud is optional and game-dependent; Nintendo Switch Save Data Cloud requires Nintendo Switch Online and title eligibility; and a manual file copy works only for PC games whose save files you can identify and whose format the new installation can read.
Choose the backup method before you erase or trade in the old device
Three methods cover most legitimate transfers. They are not interchangeable: one may synchronize a cloud state, another may move a save directly between nearby consoles, and a manual copy may create an independent archive.
| Method | Game and platform requirement | Old-device access | What you retain | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Platform cloud sync | The specific game must support the platform’s cloud-save service, and the correct account must be signed in | Usually needed to create or verify the latest upload | A service-held copy that can be downloaded on a compatible installation | A stale upload, sync conflict, or restoring the wrong version can replace newer progress |
| Nearby console transfer | Supported by the console platform and compatible with the game; the same account must be linked on both consoles | Yes; both consoles must be available and near each other | A direct transfer rather than a separate long-term archive | The destination copy can be replaced, and the transfer does not create an independent backup |
| Manual file copy | You must know the game’s save location and the destination must understand the same save format | Needed to locate and copy the files | An offline copy on external storage or another folder | Wrong files, an active game process, permissions, encryption, or a platform-specific format can make the copy unusable |
If a title offers both cloud and manual options, use cloud synchronization for convenience and retain a separate manual copy when the files are accessible. Do not assume that a cloud folder is the complete save; it may include settings or profile data, while the game may keep additional files elsewhere.

Prepare the old device safely
- List the games you care about. Record the platform, storefront, account used, edition or DLC, and whether the game has a local or online profile. An indie title can use a different save system from other games on the same platform.
- Launch each game while connected. Open the latest progress on the old device and reach a normal save point. Leave the game running long enough for the relevant service to finish its upload.
- Check the service’s status, not just the game icon. Look for a completed sync message, a current backup date, or a conflict prompt. A game can appear installed while its save upload is pending or disabled.
- Make an independent copy where possible. For a Windows title, copy the known save folder to a USB flash drive or other external storage after closing the game, provided the game’s instructions allow it. This is optional offline storage, not a universal transfer tool.
- Do not reset, sell, or wipe the old device yet. Keep it powered and intact until the replacement has launched the game and opened the expected save.
Steam and other PC storefront games
Check whether the individual game uses Steam Cloud
Steam Cloud is an opt-in, game-dependent feature. Steam says it can store save games, settings, profile statistics, and other user-specific data, but support is decided per title. Open the game’s store or support information and inspect Steam’s cloud status before switching. Do not infer support from another game by the same developer.
On the old PC, start the game, make or load the most recent save, exit normally, and wait for Steam to show that synchronization has completed. If Steam presents a conflict, it is showing different local and cloud states. Compare the dates or progress and choose deliberately; accepting the wrong side can replace the copy you intended to keep.
Know where Steam’s cloud files may appear
Steam documents these default locations for Steam Cloud files:
Recommended Free Tools
- Windows:
C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata - Linux:
~/.local/share/Steam/userdata
These directories describe Steam Cloud data; they are not a guarantee that every game’s complete save is stored there. A title may keep saves in a game-specific folder under the user profile, a documents directory, or another path. Check the game’s own support instructions or developer documentation before copying anything. Copying an arbitrary folder named “userdata” without identifying the correct game can preserve the wrong data or omit part of the save.
Install and verify on the replacement PC
- Sign in to the same Steam account on the new computer.
- Install the identical game and, where relevant, the same edition and downloadable content.
- Allow Steam Cloud to finish downloading before launching, or resolve any conflict prompt in favor of the verified old-device copy.
- Open the game, load the expected slot, and check inventory, location, unlocked chapters, or another unmistakable progress marker.
- Make a fresh save on the new computer and confirm that it uploads before changing or deleting the old installation.
Steam Support warns: “If any saves or other data have been lost, it is not likely that we will be able to recover them.” Treat synchronization as something to verify, not as a guaranteed recovery service. Steam also notes that a game’s developer may be able to help locate or transfer files when the old machine is still available.

Make a manual Windows backup of known save files
A manual copy is useful when you want a separate offline archive or when a game does not provide cloud saves. Microsoft documents the general process for copying files to an external drive and moving them to a new Windows PC; it does not certify that every game’s save format is portable.
Locate the actual save folder
Use the game’s official support page, readme, or developer instructions to identify the path. Common Windows locations include user profile folders, but a generic path is not proof for a particular title. Look for files that change when you create a test save, and note the folder’s complete structure rather than copying a single file if the instructions identify several files.

Copy the files without corrupting them
- Save in the game and exit it completely. If a launcher remains open, close it when the game’s instructions require exclusive access.
- Connect the external drive and create a folder named for the game and date, such as
GameName-2026-10-17. - Copy the documented save folder and its contents. Do not move the originals; use copy and paste so the old PC remains the fallback.
- Safely eject the drive and, if the files are important, retain a second copy in another location. This article does not establish any particular drive’s capacity, reliability, or price.
Restore and test on the new PC
- Install the game and run it once so it creates its expected folder, then exit.
- Back up any newly created destination files before replacing them.
- Copy the archived save files into the exact path specified by the game’s instructions, preserving folder names and file extensions.
- Start the game and load the save. Check concrete progress rather than relying on a menu entry alone.
- Save again, close the game, and reopen it to confirm that the restored state persists.
Windows Backup’s OneDrive folder synchronization covers selected user folders; it does not establish that game saves in arbitrary locations are automatically included. If you did not explicitly place the save inside a backed-up folder, assume it is not protected by that feature.
Nintendo Switch and Switch 2
Use Save Data Cloud only when the title is eligible
Nintendo Switch Save Data Cloud requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and is supported by most, but not all, Switch software. Eligibility is title-specific. Check the game’s eShop entry or the Save Data Cloud option in the software menu before relying on it. “Most” or “vast majority” is not a promise for a particular indie game.
On the old console, open the game while connected to the internet, confirm that the latest progress has been backed up, and note the backup date. On the replacement, sign in with the same Nintendo Account, verify the date shown for the cloud copy, and download only after checking what is currently stored locally.

Understand the overwrite warning
Downloading a cloud backup can replace the target console’s existing save for that game. Nintendo says the overwritten destination data cannot be recovered. If the target has any new progress, open the game and record which version is newer before downloading. Do not use cloud restore as a way to merge two saves; it selects one state and replaces the other.
If a Nintendo Switch Online membership expires, Nintendo says earlier backups can be accessed again when the player resubscribes within 180 days. That window is a membership-recovery condition, not a substitute for checking the backup before changing devices.
Transfer directly between nearby consoles
Nintendo also provides a nearby-console save-data transfer that does not require Nintendo Switch Online. Both consoles need internet access, must be near each other, and must have the same Nintendo Account linked to a user. This route is useful when the old console is available and you want an official device-to-device move rather than a cloud download.
- Update and connect both consoles to the internet.
- Ensure the same Nintendo Account is linked to the relevant user on each console.
- Open the system settings’ save-data transfer function and follow the on-screen prompts on the source and destination consoles.
- Select the game and confirm the destination before starting; read the warning about existing data.
- Launch the game on the destination and verify a recognizable progress marker before resetting the source console.
Switch does not support ordinary local save-data backups to a USB drive or SD card. A removable game card or downloaded game installation is not a save backup. Cloud compatibility between Switch and Switch 2 can allow compatible software’s backup data to be shared with the same Nintendo Account, but game compatibility and edition-specific content rules still apply.
When the game is on another platform or is an unfamiliar indie title
Do not copy a path from a different game or assume that a console and PC edition share saves. Cross-progression may be account-based, platform-specific, or unavailable even when the title is sold on multiple systems.

Use the game’s official support page to answer four questions:
- Which account or launcher owns the save?
- Is cloud backup enabled for this exact title and edition?
- Where are local saves stored, if the platform permits access?
- Can the destination read the same save format and downloadable content?
If the support page does not document a transfer path, keep the old device and avoid unofficial console modifications. A developer may provide a title-specific export or recovery procedure, but it should be followed exactly rather than replaced with a guessed folder or third-party tool.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify the destination before you consider the move complete
Use an observable progress check
Menus can show that a save slot exists even when it is empty or outdated. Load the slot and check a concrete marker: the latest level, chapter, map location, inventory item, achievement state, or playtime that you recognize from the old device.
Test persistence after the first launch
Make a small new save on the replacement, exit fully, and reopen the game. This confirms that the destination can write the format and that a launcher did not silently restore an older cloud copy on the next start.

Troubleshooting common failures
The replacement shows no save
Confirm that you used the same platform account, installed the same edition, and waited for synchronization. For a manual copy, compare the documented path, folder permissions, and file extensions. If the game has separate slots for different profiles, check that you copied the correct profile.
A cloud conflict appears
Stop and compare timestamps and in-game progress on both versions. Choose the verified newer state rather than automatically selecting local or cloud. If uncertain, preserve the local files separately before resolving the prompt.
The Switch cloud option is missing
The title may not support Save Data Cloud, the account may lack Nintendo Switch Online, or the console may not be online. Check the game’s eShop listing and software menu; do not infer eligibility from another Switch game.
The Switch destination has newer progress
Do not download immediately. Nintendo’s restore operation overwrites the destination save and the overwritten data cannot be recovered. Decide which console contains the authoritative progress, and use nearby transfer instead when both consoles are available and the title is compatible.
The copied PC files do not load
Restore the original files, confirm that the game is fully closed during copying, and recheck the developer’s instructions. Some games use encryption, account identifiers, multiple directories, or version-specific formats. A successful file copy does not prove that another platform or edition can read it.
