Make and verify a separate copy of your Hytale save before opening it on a new chapter version. The exact procedure depends on whether the save belongs to a dedicated server or a local player installation. For servers, copy the universe/ directory and confirm the updater’s backup directory is configured. For local saves, identify the launcher’s current user-data location for the installed patchline before copying anything; Hytale’s documented paths changed for non-release versions.
Hytale’s official Chapter I: Out of the Breach announcement, dated October 12, 2026, makes this a version-sensitive transition. A backup made before the first launch on the new version gives you a known-good point to return to if a world, player profile, mod, or patchline behaves unexpectedly.

Opening a world on a newer build can change files before you have a chance to investigate a problem. A backup made afterward may already contain converted, partially updated, or otherwise changed data. Keep one untouched copy from the last version that worked, and do not use that copy as your everyday save.
This is a precaution, not a claim that every Hytale client update automatically backs up every local save. The official server documentation describes an automatic pre-update backup for dedicated servers, but only when the required backup directory has been configured. The same documentation does not establish an equivalent automatic safeguard for every local-player installation. Read the official Hytale Server Manual for the server-specific behavior.

First identify which kind of save you have
Dedicated-server universe
If you run or administer a dedicated server, the world and player save data is stored in the server’s universe/ directory, according to Hypixel Studios’ server manual. Backing up only configuration files does not protect that world data.
Local-player save
A local save is managed through the Hytale launcher and its user-data directories rather than the dedicated-server universe/ layout. Do not apply server instructions to a local installation. The official material reviewed does not provide a complete, universal single-player copy-and-restore recipe, so the safe approach is to identify the current launcher data location for your installed version and preserve a separate copy before updating.
Back up a dedicated-server world
1. Stop activity before copying
- Announce a maintenance window to players and stop the server cleanly.
- Wait for the process to exit and confirm that no server process is still writing files.
- Do not copy a live
universe/directory while players are changing the world; a file copied halfway through a write may not represent one consistent save point.
2. Locate the documented save directory
In the server installation, find universe/. The manual identifies this directory as the location for world and player save data. Copy the entire directory, including its subdirectories and files, rather than selecting only a visible world folder.
3. Create an independent dated copy
- Make a destination outside the live server directory, such as a separate backup folder on another volume.
- Copy
universe/into that destination without renaming files inside it. - Use a label that records the server, date, time, and patchline—for example,
server-2026-10-16-before-chapter1. - Keep the original live directory unchanged until you have completed your update and verification.
An external hard drive is an optional place for an additional independent copy. It is not required, Hytale-specific, or a substitute for checking that the copy contains the intended universe/ data.
4. Check the copy before updating
- Open the backup destination and confirm that the copied directory is named
universe/. - Check that it contains the same expected world and player-data subdirectories as the live server.
- Confirm that the copy’s modified times correspond to the maintenance window.
- Record which Hytale server version and mod set produced the backup.
- Do not move, delete, or overwrite the only copy while troubleshooting.
Use the server’s built-in pre-update backup correctly
The server manual shows RunBackupBeforeUpdate as true by default. That setting runs a full server backup before an update only when a backup directory has been configured. A default value by itself is therefore not proof that a usable backup exists on your installation.
Configuration checklist
- Open the server configuration used by the updater, not a similarly named file from an old installation.
- Verify that
RunBackupBeforeUpdateis enabled. - Set and verify a writable backup directory. Use a location with enough free space and permissions for a complete server backup.
- Apply the configuration and perform the update according to the server’s normal procedure.
- After the updater finishes, inspect the configured destination and confirm that a new backup was actually created before treating it as protection.
The manual establishes the setting and its directory prerequisite, but it does not guarantee that every server installation completes a backup successfully. A separately retained manual copy of universe/ is prudent when the world is important or the update is difficult to reverse.
Do not confuse configuration backup with world backup
The separate BackupConfigBeforeUpdate setting covers configuration files such as config.json, permissions.json, bans.json, and whitelist.json. Those files preserve server settings and access lists; they are not a replacement for backing up universe/. If you need both the world and the server’s administrative state, retain both kinds of copy.

Back up a local Hytale save
Local-player instructions require more care because the correct directory depends on the launcher version and patchline. Do not assume that a path found in an older forum post is still authoritative.
1. Close the game and launcher
- Exit the world normally.
- Close Hytale and the launcher completely so no save file is being written.
- If the launcher remains in the notification area or menu bar, quit it there as well.
2. Identify the active patchline and data location
Update 5 notes describe a launcher storage change. Release continued using %HYTALE%/UserData/, while non-release patchlines moved to their own directories under %HYTALE%/data/. The notes also say that existing non-release data was duplicated during migration. This means two directories can exist without both being the save you currently play.
| Installation or patchline | Documented location in the Update 5 notes | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Release | %HYTALE%/UserData/ |
Confirm that the launcher’s current release profile points to this data and that the save’s recent files are present. |
| Non-release patchline | A patchline-specific directory under %HYTALE%/data/ |
Identify the exact active patchline directory in the launcher; do not choose a duplicated directory solely because it has a familiar name. |
These are documented storage patterns, not a promise that every operating system, launcher build, or future patch will expose the same path. Use the launcher’s current data-location information or Hytale support guidance for your installation before copying or restoring files. See the official Update 5 patch notes for the migration context.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
3. Copy the complete active user-data folder
- From the launcher-confirmed location, identify the folder that contains your current save and profile data.
- Copy that folder in its entirety to a separate destination. Preserve the folder hierarchy and file names.
- Label the copy with the date, Hytale version or patchline, and a description such as
local-before-chapter1. - Keep the original folder untouched until the new version has launched successfully and you have checked the world.
Because the official sources do not define one universal local restore sequence, do not delete an existing folder or paste a backup over an active directory merely because the names look similar. If a restore becomes necessary, first preserve the current state as another copy, verify the launcher’s active patchline, and follow the support instructions for that version.
4. Preserve both sides of a migration
When Update 5 duplicated existing non-release data during migration, an older directory may still be present. Keep the pre-update copy and the post-migration copy separate. Label each with its path and patchline rather than merging them. A merge can make it impossible to tell which files belonged to the world that last worked.
Manual copy versus the server updater backup
Dedicated-server operators can use both methods, but they answer different operational needs.
| Question | Manual copy of universe/ |
RunBackupBeforeUpdate |
|---|---|---|
| Does it require a configured backup directory? | No separate updater directory is required; you choose the destination. | Yes. The manual says the pre-update backup runs only when a backup directory is configured. |
| When does it run? | When you stop the server and copy the data. | Immediately before an update, if the setting is enabled and the updater can write to the destination. |
| Does it protect world and player saves? | Yes, if the entire universe/ directory is copied. |
The setting is described as a full server backup, but inspect the resulting backup rather than assuming completion. |
| Is a separate retained copy guaranteed? | Only if you keep the destination outside the live directory and do not overwrite it. | No. Retention depends on the configured destination and your backup policy. |
| What else may be needed? | Copy configuration files separately if you need permissions, bans, whitelist, and server settings. | Use the separate configuration-backup setting for files such as config.json, permissions.json, bans.json, and whitelist.json. |
Verify a backup before you launch the new chapter
A backup is useful only if it is readable, complete, and clearly associated with the save you intend to protect. Perform these checks while the old version is still available:

- Identity: The label records the date, source installation, and version or patchline.
- Completeness: A server copy contains
universe/; a local copy contains the launcher-confirmed active user-data folder. - Separation: The destination is outside the live save directory and is not merely a shortcut or partial selection.
- Access: You can open the destination and list its files with your normal account.
- Capacity: The destination has enough free space for the complete copy; a copy that stopped because of insufficient space is not a backup.
- Version record: Note whether the source was Release or a non-release patchline and record the server or launcher version shown at the time.
- Second copy: For an important world, retain another copy on a separate physical device or location.
Common mistakes that make a backup unusable
- Copying while the save is active: Running processes can change files during the copy, leaving an inconsistent snapshot. Stop the server or fully quit the launcher first.
- Saving inside the live installation: A backup beside the active directory can be deleted or overwritten during an update. Use a clearly separate destination.
- Copying only settings:
config.json, permissions, bans, and whitelist data do not contain the world and player saves held inuniverse/. - Trusting a default switch blindly:
RunBackupBeforeUpdate=truestill depends on a configured, writable backup directory. Inspect the output. - Choosing a duplicate local folder: Update 5 migration could leave multiple non-release directories. Match the launcher’s active patchline and recent file activity, not just a familiar folder name.
- Overwriting the only known-good copy: Keep the pre-update copy unchanged and make a working duplicate for tests or restoration.
- Assuming server and local instructions match: The documented server location is
universe/; local storage follows launcher data paths and may change with the patchline.
What to do if the update causes a problem
The server will not start
- Stop retrying with the only copy of the world.
- Preserve the post-update server directory as a separate diagnostic copy.
- Keep the pre-update
universe/backup unchanged. - Check the updater backup destination and confirm whether a completed backup exists.
- Use the current server manual or Hytale support guidance for the version-specific restore procedure rather than guessing which files to overwrite.
The world opens but progress or players appear missing
Stop and verify that the server or launcher is reading the intended patchline and data directory. Update 5’s migration duplicated non-release data, so a visually similar folder may not be the one used by the current installation. Do not delete either directory until you have identified the active one and preserved the current state.
A mod or add-on is incompatible
Do not use the only backup as a test copy. Preserve the original backup, make a working duplicate, and check whether the launcher supports returning to an older version. The Update 5 notes describe older-version support, including returning to Update 4 for cases where mods were not compatible. Version support and mod compatibility can change, so confirm the option available in your launcher before relying on it.
You are unsure which local folder is correct
Stop before copying files into a guessed location. Record the paths you found, identify the active Release or non-release patchline in the launcher, and consult the official support instructions for that installation. An incorrect copy can look successful while protecting an unused or obsolete profile.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Storage choices and practical cost considerations
The backup itself does not require a Hytale-specific product. A second folder on the same computer is convenient, but it will not help if that drive fails or the installation is damaged. For an important world, add a copy on another physical device or location. A generic external hard drive is an optional destination; choose it based on the amount of data you need to retain and your existing equipment, not on a Hytale endorsement. No particular model, capacity, price, or performance level is required by the server manual.
Keep enough free space for the complete source directory and more than one dated snapshot if you plan to retain pre- and post-update states. If a copy stops because the destination is full, treat it as incomplete and start again after making space. Do not delete the older known-good copy merely to make room for the new one until the new copy has been inspected.
A practical retention plan for future chapter updates
- Before the update: Close the game or server, create a dated copy, and verify its contents.
- At the update: Keep the pre-update copy read-only in practice by not using it as the active save.
- After the first launch: Check the intended world, player progress, permissions, and any essential settings before inviting players back.
- After verification: Create a new post-update backup while retaining at least one pre-update copy for rollback or diagnosis.
- Before troubleshooting: Make another copy of the current state so experiments do not destroy the evidence or the last known-good save.
The safest division of responsibility is straightforward: dedicated-server operators should protect universe/ and separately preserve configuration files, while local players should first identify the launcher’s active user-data directory and patchline. The official chapter announcement establishes the current Chapter I context, but storage paths and updater behavior remain version-sensitive; recheck the relevant official documentation whenever a later launcher or patch changes the layout.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Hytale automatically back up every local save before a chapter update?
Do not assume that it does. The documented automatic pre-update feature applies to dedicated servers when RunBackupBeforeUpdate is enabled and a backup directory is configured. The official material does not establish the same safeguard for every local-player installation, so make your own verified copy first.

Where are dedicated-server Hytale saves stored?
Hypixel Studios’ server manual identifies the server’s universe/ directory as the location for world and player save data. Copy that entire directory while the server is stopped.
Is RunBackupBeforeUpdate=true enough by itself?
No. The setting is shown as enabled by default, but it runs a full backup before an update only when a backup directory has been configured and is writable. Inspect the destination after the update process to confirm that a backup exists.
Do the configuration files contain my world?
No. Files such as config.json, permissions.json, bans.json, and whitelist.json preserve administrative settings and access lists. They do not replace a copy of the universe/ world and player data.
What local path should I copy?
The path depends on the active launcher patchline. Update 5 notes say Release continued using %HYTALE%/UserData/, while non-release patchlines moved to their own directories under %HYTALE%/data/. Confirm the active location in the current launcher or official support guidance rather than relying on an old post.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why do I see two non-release data folders?
The Update 5 migration duplicated existing non-release data. Multiple directories can therefore exist without both being active. Keep them separate, identify the patchline selected by the launcher, and preserve the current state before making changes.
Can I restore by pasting the backup over the current folder?
Do not do that blindly. First copy the current post-update state for diagnosis, verify the active server or launcher patchline, and follow the version-specific Hytale support procedure. The official sources do not define one universal local restore sequence.
What if a mod fails after Chapter I?
Preserve the original pre-update backup and test only on a duplicate. Update 5 notes describe older-version support, including returning to Update 4 for incompatible mods, but the available option and compatibility can change with later launcher versions.
The Bottom Line
Before launching Chapter I, stop the server or quit the launcher, copy the complete active save to a separate dated destination, and verify it. For dedicated servers that means the entire universe/ directory plus any configuration files you need; for local saves, confirm the launcher’s current Release or non-release data path first. Treat the updater’s automatic backup as an additional safeguard only after confirming its directory and output.
