Before installing a GTA V mod on a Windows PC, close the game and copy your profile folder to separate storage. The minimum backup is %USERPROFILE%DocumentsRockstar GamesGTA VProfiles, which contains the numbered profile folder or folders used by Story Mode saves. This is user data, not the installed game itself.
If you also want an easier rollback for modified files, preserve the relevant Rockstar user-data folders and optionally copy the complete game directory. Keep those jobs separate: a launcher’s game-file backup does not automatically prove that your GTA V profile saves are protected.
The minimum backup: copy the GTA V Profiles folder
Epic Games’ official transfer procedure identifies the Windows profile location as %USERPROFILE%DocumentsRockstar GamesGTA VProfiles. This path uses GTA V with a space. It is the first folder to protect because it contains the profile data associated with your Story Mode saves.
Copy the complete folder
- Exit GTA V completely. Also close the launcher if it is still writing files.
- Open File Explorer and click the address bar.
- Enter
%USERPROFILE%DocumentsRockstar GamesGTA VProfiles, then press Enter. - Copy the entire
Profilesfolder, including every numbered profile folder inside it. Do not try to identify one “main” save file by guesswork. - Paste the copy to a separate location, such as a USB thumb drive or another drive that is not the same Windows folder. Epic’s transfer instructions specifically use external storage as an example.
- Give the copy a clear name such as
GTA-V-pre-mod-2026-10-13. Adding the date is a practical way to distinguish it from a later backup; it is not a requirement imposed by Epic.
Leave the original folder where it is. A backup is useful only if the separate copy remains available when a mod installation, cleanup, or failed update changes the working files. Keeping a second copy in another location can reduce the risk that one damaged or misplaced device is your only copy, although the cited support instructions do not prescribe a particular number of copies.

Check that the copy is usable
Open the backup and confirm that it contains the numbered profile folder or folders rather than an empty parent directory. Do not edit, rename, or reorganize the internal files. The purpose of this copy is to preserve the structure that GTA V expects when the folder is returned to the same path.
Check the backup while the original game is still closed. If Windows reports that a file is in use, cancel the copy, close GTA V and its launcher completely, and repeat it. Keep the copied folder at its top level: the restore target is the Profiles directory, not a newly invented folder name.
Save data and installed game files are different backups
A GTA V profile backup protects personal data. It does not reproduce the executable files, archives, plugins, or other files in the installation directory that a mod may alter. Conversely, a copy of the installation directory does not establish that your Story Mode profile was copied.
| What you are protecting | Typical Windows location | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Profile and Story Mode save data | %USERPROFILE%DocumentsRockstar GamesGTA VProfiles |
Epic’s transfer procedure tells you to copy this complete folder to external storage and restore it to the same path. |
| Additional Rockstar user data | %USERPROFILE%DocumentsRockstar GamesGTAV |
Rockstar’s clean-install guidance lists this Documents location for saves, settings, and Rockstar Video Editor recordings. Its spelling is GTAV, without a space. |
| Additional local user data | %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalRockstar GamesGTAV |
Rockstar also lists this Local AppData location for saves, settings, and Video Editor recordings. AppData is hidden by default in Windows. |
| Installed game | Launcher-specific folder | This is the large program directory that may be changed by a mod. Its default locations are listed below, but custom library locations are common. |
The two official paths use different naming conventions: Epic’s transfer page shows GTA V for the Profiles path, while Rockstar’s clean-install page displays GTAV for the broader Documents and Local AppData folders. Do not create a second folder merely to make the names match. Inspect what actually exists on your computer and preserve the relevant folders before deleting or replacing anything.
A profile copy is normally the quickest and least storage-intensive protection because it contains user data rather than the complete installation. A game-directory copy can be much larger and is useful only when you need to reverse file changes locally. Treat the two copies as separate checkpoints with separate restore jobs.
Preserve the other Rockstar folders before cleanup
Rockstar’s “How to Perform a Clean Install of Grand Theft Auto V on PC” guidance, last updated May 2, 2024, warns that data in the listed Documents and Local AppData directories cannot be recovered if it was not backed up before deletion. That warning matters even if your immediate goal is mod installation: a troubleshooting step can turn into an irreversible cleanup.
Back up the Documents data
- In File Explorer, enter
%USERPROFILE%DocumentsRockstar GamesGTAV. - Copy the folder to your separate backup location, retaining its internal structure.
- Keep this copy alongside, but clearly distinguish it from, the Epic-style
GTA VProfilesbackup.
Back up Local AppData data
- Open File Explorer and enter
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalRockstar GamesGTAV. - If the folder does not appear while browsing manually, enable hidden items in File Explorer’s View settings. Rockstar notes that AppData is hidden by default.
- Copy the
GTAVfolder to the same separate storage used for your other backup, without deleting the original.
These additional folders can include settings and Rockstar Video Editor recordings as well as save-related data. Backing them up is useful before a clean install or broad troubleshooting, but it does not replace the explicit copy of the Profiles folder.

If a mod asks you to replace archives or other installation files, a complete game-folder copy can let you roll back without downloading the entire game again. This is a storage-intensive precaution and is separate from the profile backup. Rockstar’s clean-install documentation supplies default locations, not a universal mod-backup procedure.

| Steam version | C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonGrand Theft Auto V |
| Epic Games version | C:Program FilesEpic GamesGTA |
Those are defaults, not guarantees. A different drive, a custom Steam library, or a changed Epic installation directory will place the files elsewhere. Use the launcher’s displayed install location rather than copying an empty default path.
Copy the complete directory only if you have enough space and a reason to restore modified files locally. A smaller alternative is to preserve the exact files a mod’s current instructions say it will change, together with the original folder structure. A GTAPoliceMods community guide recommends preserving the game directory and files a mod changes; that is community advice, not a Rockstar requirement or guarantee that every mod has the same file footprint.
When a full game copy is worth it
- Make one when the mod replaces several archives or adds files throughout the installation and you want a local rollback.
- Skip it when the mod’s instructions do not touch the installation directory and your goal is only to protect Story Mode progress.
- Never put the only copy inside the directory you may later verify, delete, or reinstall.
There is no supported capacity or performance requirement for the optional drive in these procedures. A generic USB thumb drive is a valid external-storage choice for the profile folder; choose storage that can hold the folders you actually plan to copy and keep it disconnected from routine cleanup operations.

1. Record the starting state
Note the launcher you use, the actual game-install location, and the date of the backup. Save the mod’s current installation instructions with your backup if they identify files to replace. Mod packages and instructions vary, so do not assume a method used by one mod applies to another.
2. Make the profile backup first
Copy %USERPROFILE%DocumentsRockstar GamesGTA VProfiles in full to separate storage. This is the essential step for protecting Story Mode progress.
3. Preserve broader Rockstar data
Copy the Documents GTAV folder and the Local AppData GTAV folder before any cleanup. Show hidden items if necessary to reach AppData.
4. Decide whether the game directory needs protection
For a mod that changes only installation files, consider a complete game-folder copy or a targeted copy of the files named by the mod. For a mod that does not touch the installation, a full directory copy may consume space without adding useful protection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors5. Keep the untouched copy separate
Do not store your only backup inside the GTA V installation directory. A verification or reinstall that removes that directory can remove the supposed backup with it.

- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
6. Keep a simple inventory
Write down which folders you copied and which files the mod says it will change. This prevents a common recovery error: restoring the profile while leaving a modified installation file in place, or restoring a game file without restoring the profile that goes with it.
How to restore the profile backup
Epic’s transfer workflow restores the copied profile folder to the same Profiles path on the destination PC and then starts the game to load the save. The same layout provides a sensible restore approach on the original PC after a failed mod, provided you first check which copy is newest.
- Close GTA V and its launcher.
- Make a temporary copy of the current
Profilesfolder if it contains newer progress. This gives you a way back if you selected the wrong backup. - Open
%USERPROFILE%DocumentsRockstar GamesGTA V. - Replace or merge the existing
Profilesfolder with the backed-up folder, preserving the numbered profile folders. Avoid overwriting newer files until you have compared dates and contents. - Launch GTA V and load Story Mode to verify the expected save.
If you are restoring after a clean install, also return the backed-up Documents and Local AppData Rockstar folders only when the troubleshooting instructions or your own recovery plan call for them. Do not delete current data first unless you have a separate copy of it.
Restore in stages when possible: profile first, then any broader Rockstar data, then the installation files the mod changed. After each stage, start Story Mode and confirm the result. This makes it easier to identify which folder caused a problem than replacing every backup at once.
Steam Backup and Steam Cloud are not the same thing
Steam’s game backup feature
Steam says its backup feature supports games that fully download, install, and patch through Steam. It also warns that third-party save locations vary by developer and that custom files may need to be copied back to their corresponding folders. Therefore, use Steam’s game backup for the Steam-managed installation, but make the separate GTA V profile copy described above instead of assuming the game backup contains your personal saves.
Steam Cloud synchronization
Cloud synchronization is a separate layer, not an independent offline archive under your control. Steam documents that playing offline delays synchronization until you are online again. It also describes situations in which a conflict appears or an earlier version is uploaded. Steam Support states that it cannot recover lost saves or resolve cloud conflicts for you.
Before replacing a local profile, decide which version is authoritative: the dated external copy, the current local files, or the cloud’s offered version. If Steam presents a conflict, read the file dates and prompts rather than selecting an option automatically. Keep the standalone backup until the game opens the intended save successfully.
Mods, Story Mode, and GTA Online
The sources do not establish one installation rule for every mod, edition, or launcher. Follow the current instructions supplied for the specific mod, and treat any file list in those instructions as authoritative for that mod only.

Rockstar has a support article titled “You Are Attempting to Access GTA Online Servers with an Altered Version of the Game.” It addresses an altered-version access problem and points toward a clean-install remedy. That evidence supports a narrow practical rule: use altered files for offline single-player testing, and consult current Rockstar guidance before attempting to access GTA Online. It does not establish a universal policy for every mod, a guaranteed enforcement outcome, or a rule that applies identically to every edition.
These file-path procedures are for Windows PC. They are not a console procedure for PlayStation or Xbox, and the cited support material does not provide local-folder steps for those platforms.

The Profiles path does not exist
Confirm that GTA V has been launched at least once under the Windows account you are using, then check the path again. Look under the actual user profile represented by %USERPROFILE%, not another account’s Documents folder. A redirected or cloud-managed Documents folder can also change where you see Rockstar data; search File Explorer for a folder named Profiles inside a Rockstar Games directory and compare it with the path shown by Epic.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You cannot find Local AppData
Enter the full environment-variable path directly, or enable hidden items in File Explorer. AppData is hidden by default, so its absence from a normal browse view does not prove that the folder is missing.
The restored save is not listed
Close the game again and verify that the copied folder is at DocumentsRockstar GamesGTA VProfiles, with the numbered profile folder still inside it. Check that you restored the dated copy you intended and did not place Profiles one level too deep, such as ProfilesProfiles. If cloud synchronization offers a different version, do not overwrite the local copy until you have retained it separately.
A clean install removed data
Rockstar’s warning is explicit: data in the listed Documents and Local AppData locations cannot be recovered if it was not backed up before deletion. If no separate copy exists, do not assume Steam Cloud or a launcher reinstall can reconstruct it; Steam says Support cannot recover lost saves or resolve cloud conflicts.
You cannot find the installed game folder
Use the launcher’s actual installation or library setting. The Rockstar, Steam, and Epic paths listed above are defaults only, and custom locations are valid.

The backup is on the same drive
A second folder on the same Windows drive protects against an accidental file replacement but not against a drive failure or a reinstall that removes the drive’s contents. Keep at least one copy outside the GTA V installation directory; external storage is the workflow Epic uses for a PC transfer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the GTA V save folder on Windows?
Epic’s transfer instructions use %USERPROFILE%DocumentsRockstar GamesGTA VProfiles. Copy the complete Profiles folder, including its numbered profile folder or folders.
Is copying the GTA V installation folder enough?
No. The installation folder contains program files, while the Profiles folder contains personal Story Mode data. Protect both separately if you need both kinds of rollback.
Should I back up the Rockstar Games folders in AppData?
Yes, especially before a clean install or broad cleanup. Rockstar lists %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalRockstar GamesGTAV for saves, settings, and Video Editor recordings, and AppData may be hidden.
Can Steam Cloud replace a manual backup?
No. Steam documents delayed synchronization, conflicts, and possible earlier-version uploads, and says Support cannot recover lost saves or resolve cloud conflicts. Keep a separate dated copy.
Where are the default GTA V installation folders?
Rockstar lists C:Program FilesRockstar GamesGrand Theft Auto V for its launcher, C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonGrand Theft Auto V for Steam, and C:Program FilesEpic GamesGTA for Epic. Custom locations are possible.
Can I use these steps on PlayStation or Xbox?
No. These are Windows PC file-path instructions. The cited support pages do not provide equivalent local-folder procedures for console editions.
What should I do if GTA V will not access GTA Online after modding?
Rockstar has a support article for attempting to access GTA Online with an altered game version and points to clean-install guidance. Keep altered files for offline single-player use and consult current Rockstar support before going online.
