For a GOG purchase, the dependable offline method is to download the complete offline backup installer set from your browser, preserve your saves and supporting files, and keep tested copies on more than one type of storage. In your GOG account library, open the game and choose DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS. Download every numbered installer part, language file and DLC package, then run the installer locally when you need to restore the game. GOG Galaxy is optional for DRM-free single-player play; multiplayer and other online services still require a connection.
What DRM-free means for offline play
DRM-free is a distribution promise, not a guarantee that every part of a game will work forever on every future computer. GOG’s developer documentation says games released as DRM-free should work regardless of Galaxy authentication, whether the Galaxy client is installed, or whether an internet connection is available. That covers the game’s copy-protection check. It does not make an online server, account-based multiplayer mode, cloud synchronization, leaderboard, achievement service or other network feature available without a network.
Galaxy is therefore an optional convenience for a DRM-free game. You can install from the downloaded executable and launch a supported single-player mode directly. If a title uses an external service for multiplayer or another online-only feature, that feature remains unavailable offline even when the base game starts normally.
Decide what a restorable backup must contain
A useful archive lets you reinstall a particular game and continue from a saved position without relying on a store client or a live download. Before downloading, define the recovery target for each title:

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Base game: the complete offline installer, including every numbered setup part.
- Exact language and edition: language packs, regional files and edition-specific content that the installer does not include automatically.
- DLC and expansions: separately listed installers or packages, including bonus campaigns and soundtracks when you want them preserved.
- Saved progress: local save folders copied from the computer on which you played. Cloud saves alone are not an offline recovery plan.
- Configuration: settings, key bindings, graphics profiles and controller mappings when a game stores them outside its installation directory.
- Legally retained modifications: mod archives, load-order notes and any profiles you are allowed to keep.
- Dependencies and notes: required runtimes, patches, controller software and the last successful test result.
Make a short inventory for each game before you start. It prevents a common failure: having a large installer but discovering later that the save, DLC or a required runtime was left on the original PC.
Download the complete offline installer set
- Open your GOG account in a browser. Go to your library and select the game you want to archive. The browser workflow is useful because it does not depend on the Galaxy client being installed or signed in on the computer that will hold the archive.
- Choose DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS. Use the offline-installer section rather than downloading only a small client stub. The page may list several files for one game.
- Download every numbered part. If the list includes files such as part 1, part 2 and later parts, save all of them. A missing part normally makes the set unusable for a complete installation.
- Add language and DLC files. Select the language you use and download separately listed expansions or content you own. Do not assume that a language pack or DLC will be fetched during an offline installation.
- Let each download finish completely. Confirm that the browser reports completion and that the file size is not zero or unexpectedly small. If a download is interrupted, restart it before moving the archive to another drive.
- Record the version and date. In the game’s archive folder, create a plain-text file containing the game title, edition, installer version if shown, language, DLC list and download date. This note tells you which build you tested and helps you distinguish a newer set from an older archival copy.
Keep the original installer set even if the store later publishes an update. A newer package may fix a bug, but the older set can be the only way to recreate a known-working environment or a mod-compatible version.
Preserve saves and supporting files
Locate local saves
Many Windows games store saves in a location other than the installation directory, such as a user profile folder, a Documents subfolder or a hidden application-data directory. Use the game’s documentation, its readme, or a file search for the title and recent save-file timestamps. Copy the entire save directory rather than a single file so that profiles, slots and metadata remain together. If the game has an in-game export command, use it as an additional copy.
Recommended Free Tools
Close the game before copying. A save that is still being written can be incomplete. Keep the original folder structure inside a clearly named saves directory and write down the original path in your archive notes. That path is valuable when restoring the files on another Windows account.
Keep configuration, DLC and dependencies
Back up configuration files when they are stored outside the game directory. Include controller layouts, custom key bindings, graphics settings and profiles if recreating them would take significant time. Preserve DLC installers and bonus content alongside the base installer, and note the installation order if the publisher specifies one.

GOG’s quality-assurance documentation says its offline installers package required Windows redistributables. Even so, the Museum of Play’s preservation guidance recommends saving additional software needed to run a game. Keep copies or precise notes for runtimes, patches, legacy components and controller drivers that the game requires. Do not assume that a future operating-system release will provide an old dependency automatically.
Handle modifications deliberately
Mods can be part of the experience you want to preserve, but they add another compatibility layer. Save the mod archives, versions, installation instructions and load order only when you are legally allowed to retain and redistribute them for your own use. Keep an unmodified installer copy as well, so you can tell whether a startup problem comes from the base game or from a modification.
Use a predictable archive layout
A consistent folder structure makes a large library searchable and reduces the chance of mixing installer parts. One practical layout is:
Game title (edition) - installer version - YYYY-MM-DD/
01-installers/
game_setup_part1.exe
game_setup_part2.bin
language-pack.exe
dlc-expansion.exe
02-saves/
original-save-path.txt
saves/
03-config-and-mods/
04-dependencies-and-patches/
05-notes/
archive-info.txt
recovery-test.txt
Use the exact filenames supplied by the store. Do not rename numbered parts unless you are certain the installer does not depend on their names. Put the text record in the same top-level folder as the installers, and include the download date, version, language, DLC, save location, dependencies and test result.
For a very large library, maintain an index spreadsheet or text list with one row per game. Record the archive location, installer version, save-backup date, last offline test and any known limitation. The index is not a substitute for the files; it is a map that lets you find the right set quickly.

Choose storage for the archive
Use storage that matches the size of your library and the way you expect to recover it. No single medium eliminates every risk.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Storage option | Strengths | Trade-offs and precautions | Best role |
|---|---|---|---|
| External hard disk drive | Low cost per terabyte and practical capacity for a large installer library. | Mechanical parts are vulnerable to shocks. Keep it disconnected except during backup or recovery and protect it from heat, moisture and impact. | Primary offline archive copy. |
| Portable solid-state drive | Fast transfers, quiet operation and better resistance to movement than a mechanical drive. | Usually costs more per terabyte. It still needs a second copy and should be disconnected when not in use. | Fast working archive or travel copy. |
| Cloud storage | Provides an off-site copy and may offer version history. | Restoring requires internet access. Check encryption, account security, retention rules, file-size limits and regional availability before relying on it. | Geographically separate copy. |
| Optical media | Useful as cold storage for smaller archives that can remain offline. | Capacity is limited and long-term readability varies. Verify every disc after writing and store it away from heat, light and scratches. | Small, infrequently changed archival sets. |
CISA recommends a secure external drive or a properly vetted cloud service, encrypting removable media and disconnecting the drive when it is not actively being used for backup. Encryption protects the files if a portable drive is lost; it does not protect against forgetting the encryption key, so store recovery information securely and separately.
Apply the 3-2-1 backup rule
For a durable game archive, follow the 3-2-1 pattern described in US-CERT/CISA guidance:
- Three copies: the working library or original PC plus two backup copies.
- Two media types: for example, the computer’s storage and an external drive, with cloud storage as another medium when appropriate.
- One off-site copy: keep it outside the home or business location so a theft, fire or local incident does not remove every copy.
A practical arrangement is the original PC or a primary archive drive, a disconnected external HDD or SSD stored locally, and a vetted cloud or geographically separate drive. If the library is too large for cloud storage, put the most irreplaceable saves and installers in the off-site copy first, then expand it as capacity allows. The rule reduces shared failure risk; it does not require three identical drives purchased on the same day.
Verify the backup before you need it
A file being present on a drive does not prove that the installer can run. CISA recommends regularly testing backup availability and integrity. Test at least one representative game after creating the archive, and retest important titles after you replace an installer set or move the files.

- Disconnect the test computer from the network, or disable its network adapter. This checks that the recovery procedure does not silently fetch a file or authenticate online.
- Copy the installer parts to a temporary local folder. Keep the archive itself untouched so a failed experiment cannot damage the master copy.
- Run the setup executable locally and point it to a new test directory. If the installer reports a missing part, compare the folder with your inventory and re-download the absent file.
- Install the documented redistributables or other dependencies. Record the exact component and any error message in the recovery-test note.
- Launch the game without starting Galaxy. Test the single-player mode you care about, not merely whether a splash screen appears.
- Restore a copied save into the documented path and load it. Confirm that the expected profile, slot and downloadable content are visible.
- Exit cleanly and record the operating-system version, installer version, dependency result and test date. Note any feature that still needs a network connection.
Use a disposable test profile or virtual machine when practical. Testing in a separate environment reveals hidden assumptions while preserving your normal installation. Do not overwrite a known-good save during the test.
Play a GOG game without Galaxy or internet
After an offline installation, launch the game’s executable or its desktop shortcut while the computer is disconnected. For a DRM-free title, Galaxy authentication should not be required for the base game, and the Galaxy client does not need to be present. If the installer includes a choice of shortcuts, select the direct game executable rather than a client launcher.
Expect the following boundaries:
- Single-player content that is designed to run locally can work offline.
- Multiplayer matchmaking, friends lists, leaderboards, cloud saves, achievements synchronized to an account and other server-backed services need connectivity.
- A game may display an online-service warning even though its offline campaign remains playable.
- If a title depends on an external account or server for its core operation, DRM-free distribution does not remove that service dependency.
Copying a save from a cloud-enabled computer does not automatically make it an offline save. Verify that the local file exists and that the game can load it after the network is disabled.

Stores can replace an offline installer with a patched version. Keep the older set when it is important for preservation, compatibility or a mod setup, and place the new set in a separate versioned folder. Update the archive note with:

Troubleshoot common recovery failures
The installer says a file is missing
Keep all numbered parts in the same folder and preserve their original names. Compare the folder against the store’s download list, including language and DLC files. A partial browser download can look present while being incomplete; download that part again and repeat the test from a clean temporary folder.
The game starts but a save is absent
Check the path recorded in original-save-path.txt, the Windows user account in use and whether the game created a new empty profile. Close the game, copy the backed-up save directory into the exact expected location, and restart. If the title stores saves in a per-user or per-version directory, preserve that structure rather than flattening the files.
A runtime or driver error appears offline
Read the error text and consult the dependency notes from the original installation. Install the redistributable or legacy component included with, or documented for, the game. Add the discovery to the archive notes and retain the installer for that dependency where licensing permits. A successful install on one operating-system release does not establish compatibility with every later release.
The base game works but DLC or mods do not
Confirm that the DLC installer was applied to the same directory and that its version matches the base game. For mods, test the unmodified game first, then add one modification at a time using the saved load order. Keep a clean copy of the base installation so you can roll back without downloading again.
The game opens a client or asks for online authentication
Check that you installed from the offline backup executable rather than a client downloader and that the title is actually listed as DRM-free. Some online features can still open a login prompt; bypassing that prompt may leave the offline campaign available, but a title whose core operation depends on a server cannot be made fully offline by copying files.
Understand the limits of long-term preservation
An installer protects you from losing access to a download, but it cannot promise that every future operating system, graphics driver, controller interface or online service will remain compatible. The Museum of Play handbook recommends backing up the installation directory for DRM-free versions and saving the additional software needed to run the game. Preserve your notes about runtimes, patches, controller support and the last successful test so that a future troubleshooting session begins with evidence rather than guesswork.
Periodically connect the archive drive only long enough to check that it mounts and that representative files can be read. Refresh a copy to new hardware before an old drive becomes unreliable, and verify the copied files afterward. For cloud storage, review retention and account-recovery settings; an account that cannot be recovered is not a dependable off-site archive.
Security and legal precautions
- Use a strong, unique password and multi-factor authentication on the store account that provides the installers.
- Encrypt removable drives, especially when they contain account-related saves or personal files.
- Disconnect backup drives between sessions to reduce exposure to malware that can encrypt every mounted volume.
- Keep installer and save archives for your own use and follow the game publisher’s license when copying, modifying or retaining DLC and mods.
- Store encryption keys and recovery codes somewhere separate from the encrypted drive, with enough information for your future self to identify the archive.
Offline game-backup checklist
- Open the game in the browser-based GOG library.
- Choose DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS.
- Download every setup part, language file and DLC package you need.
- Keep the files together under a versioned folder and record the date.
- Copy local saves, configurations, dependencies, patches and permitted mods.
- Make at least three copies on two media types, with one copy off-site.
- Encrypt removable media and disconnect it when the backup is not in use.
- Install one game with networking disabled, launch single-player mode and restore a save.
- Write the test result and any missing dependency into the archive notes.
The result is a recovery plan rather than a pile of downloaded files: a complete installer set, the personal data needed to resume play, documented dependencies and independently stored copies. That is the practical way to keep DRM-free PC games playable when the internet or a store client is unavailable.
