Back up files stored on the Chromebook before you start either a factory reset (Powerwash) or ChromeOS recovery. In the Files app, copy Downloads and other folders under local My files to Google Drive or supported external storage, then confirm the copies open from the destination. A Powerwash erases local user data; recovery removes and reinstalls ChromeOS and permanently erases the Chromebook’s hard drive.
Do not treat a recovery USB as backup storage. Google’s recovery process erases the selected flash drive, so keep recovery media separate from the device holding your file backup.
Reset and recovery are both destructive, but they are not the same operation
Understanding which procedure you are about to run determines what must be saved. Google’s factory-reset instructions call the reset a Powerwash. It returns the Chromebook to its factory state and erases user data on the internal hard drive, including files in Downloads. Files already stored in Google Drive or on external storage are not erased by the Powerwash.

It removes and reinstalls the operating system and permanently erases everything on the Chromebook’s hard drive, including downloaded files. Google states: “Recovery permanently erases everything on your Chromebook’s hard drive, even your downloaded files.”

| Operation | What it does | What happens to local files | Typical recovery method |
|---|---|---|---|
| Factory reset (Powerwash) | Returns ChromeOS to factory settings and clears the user profile. | Local user data, including Downloads, is erased. Copies already in Drive or on external storage remain there. | Reset controls in ChromeOS Settings. |
| ChromeOS recovery | Removes and reinstalls ChromeOS. | The entire internal hard drive is permanently erased. | Internet recovery on some newer Chromebooks, or USB recovery media on other models. |
| Recovery USB creation | Creates installation media for recovery. | The USB drive selected by the recovery utility is erased. It is not a backup destination. | A separate working computer and a USB flash drive of at least 8 GB. |
If you are unsure whether you need a reset or recovery, stop before deleting anything and identify the procedure in the Google instructions. The backup steps below work for either one.
Find every local file before copying anything
The safest backup starts with an inventory. ChromeOS does not automatically place every local file in Drive merely because you are signed in or have Chrome sync enabled. Look through the Files app and identify what exists only on the Chromebook.
Check Downloads first
Open the Files app and select Downloads under My files. Review the entire folder, including items in subfolders. Downloads commonly contains browser downloads, email attachments, exported documents, installers, images, videos and files received through messaging apps.

Use the Files app’s search and sort controls to find recently changed or unusually large items. Open important documents, photographs and videos now; a file that is already corrupt or incomplete cannot be rescued by copying it later.

Review the rest of My files
Move through every other folder shown under local My files. Include files you deliberately saved outside Downloads, such as schoolwork, tax documents, scans, music, project folders and recordings. If you created a folder for a particular application, open it and check its contents rather than assuming the application has synchronized them.
Check files created or stored by apps
Some applications save exports or working files in an application-specific location. Use the application’s own Save, Export or backup command when one is available, then locate the resulting file in Files and copy it. If an app keeps data inside its account rather than as a normal file, confirm separately that the account’s data is available online before erasing the Chromebook.
Separate local files from Drive files
The Files app shows cloud locations separately from local storage. A file visible under Google Drive is already in that Drive location; a file under Downloads or another local My files folder is on the Chromebook and must be copied. When in doubt, treat the local copy as the one that needs protection.

Choose a backup destination
Google’s reset guidance identifies two appropriate destinations: Google Drive and supported external storage. Choose one you can access after the reset, and use both for irreplaceable material when practical. The recovery USB is a third category entirely and should be considered installation media, not storage for your only copy.

| Destination | Best when | Verification before erasing | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Drive | You can sign in to the correct Google Account and have enough cloud space. | Open the intended Drive account, locate the copied files and open representative files. Check that Drive’s sync status no longer indicates a pending or failed upload. | A file may be present locally but still waiting to sync or may have failed to sync. Offline availability alone does not prove a successful cloud copy. |
| Supported external storage | You want a separate physical copy or cannot rely on cloud access. | Confirm the Chromebook recognizes the device, open several copied files directly from it and safely eject it. | Some external devices are not supported by every Chromebook. Recognition and successful opening must be tested before the reset. |
| USB recovery media | You need to reinstall ChromeOS. | Verify only that the recovery media was created correctly; keep your backup on another destination. | Google’s recovery utility erases the selected media, and the minimum USB capacity for the USB method is 8 GB. |
Back up to Google Drive step by step
- Confirm the account. Check which Google Account is active on the Chromebook. The Drive copy must go to an account you will be able to access after the reset, not a temporary guest or someone else’s profile.
- Open the source folder. In Files, choose My files, then open Downloads and each other local folder you inventoried. Select individual items or complete folders. If you are unsure whether a hidden subfolder matters, copy the whole parent folder.
- Copy rather than prematurely delete. Use the Files app’s copy command, choose Google Drive in the left navigation, and select or create a clearly named destination folder such as
Chromebook backup - October 2026. Copying leaves the local original in place until you have verified the cloud copy. - Allow uploads to finish. Keep the Chromebook connected to the internet and powered on. Large videos and folders can take longer than small documents. Do not begin a Powerwash merely because the copy command has completed; the upload still has to finish.
- Check Drive itself. Open the destination in Drive and confirm that the expected folders and filenames appear in the intended account. Open several files, including at least one large file and one file type you cannot easily recreate.
- Inspect sync indicators. Google explains that Drive status indicators show whether files are available offline and can reveal a file that is still waiting to sync or did not sync successfully. A file lacking the expected completed status is not ready to rely on; wait, retry the copy or use external storage for that item. See Google’s Drive offline and sync guidance.
Keep the Drive folder until you have finished setting up the Chromebook again and have opened the files on the recovered or reset system. Do not empty the folder immediately after the reset.
Back up to external storage step by step
- Use a compatible device. Connect the external drive or flash storage to the Chromebook. In Files, look for it under the external-storage section. If it does not appear, the Chromebook may not support that device; do not assume that an unlisted drive received the files.
- Create a labeled backup folder. On the external device, make a folder that identifies the computer and date. A clear folder structure makes it easier to distinguish the backup from unrelated files later.
- Copy the local folders. Return to My files, select Downloads and the other folders from your inventory, and copy them to the external device. Preserve the original local files until verification is complete.
- Wait for the copy operation. Do not unplug the device while Files is still transferring data. For a large folder, wait for the progress indication to finish before opening another location.
- Test the copy from the device. Open several documents, images and other important file types directly from the external storage. Choose files from different folders and include at least one large item. If a file will not open from the device, copy it again or use Drive as a second destination.
- Eject safely. Use the Files app’s eject control for the external device, wait until it disappears from the sidebar, and then disconnect it. Keep the device somewhere separate from the Chromebook while the reset or recovery runs.
Google documents saving and opening files on storage devices but notes that external-device support can vary. A drive that works with another computer is not automatically guaranteed to work with every Chromebook, which is why recognition and test-opening are part of the backup rather than optional checks. The relevant Files help is available at Open, save or delete files on your Chromebook.
Keep recovery media separate from the backup
If ChromeOS recovery is required, Google’s USB method uses a flash drive with at least 8 GB. The recovery process writes installation files to the selected media and erases that media so it can be reused for recovery. Any ordinary files already on that USB drive will be lost.
- Use a working computer to create the recovery media when possible.
- Select a USB drive that does not contain your only copy of photos, documents or other personal files.
- Store the actual backup on Google Drive or on a different external device before creating recovery media.
- After recovery is complete, do not format the backup drive as recovery media unless you have copied its contents elsewhere.
Some newer Chromebooks offer internet recovery, while other models require USB media. The availability of one method does not change the need to save local files first. Follow the model-appropriate procedure in Google’s Chromebook recovery instructions.

Run the reset only after the backup passes these checks
Before selecting Powerwash or starting recovery, make a final go/no-go decision:
- Every folder under local My files, especially Downloads, has been reviewed.
- Files needed from individual apps have been exported or copied.
- The Drive destination is the correct account, and representative files open there with no pending or failed sync status.
- For external storage, the Chromebook recognized the device and representative files opened from it.
- The backup is not stored only on the USB device being used for recovery.
- You know which reset or recovery procedure applies to this Chromebook.
For a factory reset, open ChromeOS Settings and search for Powerwash or Reset, then read the confirmation screen carefully before accepting it. Google’s factory-reset help explains the current reset flow and the data it removes. A reset does not delete files that were already copied to Drive or an external device, but it does remove the local originals.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the Chromebook needs recovery because it will not start
A non-booting Chromebook makes local-file backup more difficult because you may not be able to open Files. If the machine still starts far enough to access your account or Files, complete the backup before entering recovery. If it cannot, do not create recovery media on a drive that contains your only backup.

Use Google’s recovery documentation to determine whether the model supports internet recovery or requires USB recovery. Recovery is not a repair that preserves the internal disk: its stated behavior is to erase the hard drive and reinstall ChromeOS. Any files that exist only on that disk should be treated as at risk until they have been copied by a method that works for the device.

Work and school Chromebooks require administrator guidance
On a managed Chromebook, an organization can control whether users may factory-reset the device and can require re-enrollment after the reset. A reset may also remove local files that your organization expects to be stored in an approved service. Google directs work and school users to their administrator in both its reset and recovery guidance.
Before copying sensitive material to a personal Drive account or personal external drive, ask the administrator which destination is permitted. Confirm how the device will be re-enrolled and whether the organization has a required backup or export procedure. If the reset control is blocked, do not attempt to bypass it; contact the administrator.
Troubleshooting backup problems
A file appears in Drive but will not open
Check that you are viewing the same Google Account used for the copy. Return to the Chromebook while it is online and inspect the file’s Drive status. Google notes that a file without the expected completed indicator may still be waiting to sync or may not have synchronized successfully. Recopy the original or create an external-storage copy before erasing local data.

Do not delete local files to make space until another verified copy exists. Use supported external storage for the complete set, or split the backup between Drive and an external device. Verify each part independently and keep a written list of what was placed in each destination.
The external device does not appear
Reconnect it and check the Files sidebar again. If the Chromebook still does not recognize it, treat the device as unsupported for this backup and switch to Google Drive or another storage device that the Chromebook recognizes. Do not proceed based on the assumption that a silent copy succeeded.
The only available USB drive contains personal files
Stop before launching the recovery utility. That utility erases the selected media. Obtain another USB drive of at least 8 GB for recovery, or use internet recovery if the Chromebook offers it, while preserving the original drive as the backup.
The Chromebook is managed and reset is unavailable
Contact the school or workplace administrator. The organization may have disabled Powerwash, may require a specific backup location or may need to re-enroll the device after recovery.
