The safest way to move a PC save between Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG GALAXY, or another launcher is to make an independent copy before changing anything, then restore it into the destination game’s documented save location and test it while your original remains untouched. Cloud synchronization is helpful but game-specific, and a save created by one storefront build is not automatically compatible with another. Treat the process as a controlled backup and migration, not as a simple folder drag.
What you can and cannot assume
Save files are chosen by each game’s developer. One title may use Documents, another may use AppData, a hidden profile directory, a registry entry, or a launcher-specific container. Even two storefront builds of the same game can use different folders, identifiers, or save formats.
Launcher cloud services also have limits. Steam Cloud, Epic cloud saves, and GOG GALAXY cloud saves work only when the individual game supports and configures them. Cloud synchronization is not a complete replacement for a separate backup, and it does not prove that a different storefront build will read the files.

- A game installation backup and a save backup are separate things.
- A cloud copy can be stale, incomplete, or in conflict after offline play.
- Copying a file proves only that the file was copied; it does not prove cross-launcher compatibility.
- Keep the original backup until the destination game loads the expected progress.
Before you start: a safe migration checklist
- Install the destination game’s launcher and, if required, the destination build, but do not begin a new game over the old save.
- Check the game’s current developer support instructions for save locations and migration rules.
- Allow any pending cloud synchronization to finish on the source computer.
- Record which device, launcher, game edition, and date produced the backup.
- Have storage outside the working save folder available, such as another internal drive, a network location, or a USB flash drive for save backups.
Step-by-step: back up and transfer a save
1. Check cloud status and conflicts first
Open the source launcher and wait for synchronization to complete. Do not dismiss a warning just to start the game. Epic documents a conflict scenario when a game is played offline on one device and then used through Epic on another; its prompt offers two versions, and its support guidance says to choose the newer file to retain the latest progress. Compare the displayed timestamps or other details before selecting anything.

Steam Cloud is also game-dependent. Steam says many games do not use Steam Cloud for saves, and cloud files can be present without representing every local working save. GOG’s developer documentation similarly describes synchronization only for games whose developers configure it.
2. Close the game and the launcher if the game’s instructions require it
Do not copy a save while the game is writing to it. Exit to the desktop and wait for the process to disappear from Task Manager or the equivalent system monitor. Developer instructions for Obsidian games explicitly require the game not to be running and advise backing up changes before moving files; that is a sensible precaution for other titles as well.
3. Locate the exact source save
Start with the game’s own support page. Search for the title plus “Where can I find my local game saves?” or “save location.” Verify that the instructions match your operating system, edition, and launcher.
Epic lists this launcher-managed location as one place where a local copy may exist:

These are search locations, not universal instructions. Look for files whose modified time matches your last session and confirm the folder by changing a harmless in-game setting, exiting, and observing which files update. Do not edit the files merely to test the location.

4. Make an independent backup copy
Copy the complete save folder, not just one file that happens to look recent. Preserve subfolders, profile files, configuration metadata, and multiple save slots when they are present. Paste the copy into a separate location outside the game’s working directory, then make a second copy if the progress is especially valuable.
Use a descriptive folder name such as GameName-Steam-Windows-2026-10-16. Include the game version or edition when known. A USB flash drive can carry a separate copy between computers, but it does not locate, convert, or synchronize saves for you.
5. Identify the destination build’s expected location
Install or launch the destination version once, then quit before creating meaningful new progress. Consult the developer’s instructions for that exact storefront build. Some developers publish separate paths for Steam, Epic, GOG, or other editions; an Obsidian support article illustrates why title-specific directions matter.
Do not assume that the source and destination folders have the same name, that account identifiers are interchangeable, or that a cloud folder is the same as the game’s live save folder. If the developer documents a conversion step, follow it exactly. If no compatibility statement exists, treat the transfer as unconfirmed rather than guaranteed.
6. Temporarily control cloud synchronization
If the destination launcher immediately downloads an older cloud copy, it can overwrite the files you just restored. Follow the launcher’s documented offline or cloud-management procedure, or make the restore while the game and launcher are closed when the developer permits it. The goal is to prevent an automatic sync from replacing your known backup before you can test it.
7. Restore the copy, preserving the destination’s original files
Rename the destination save folder to something such as GameName-destination-before-restore rather than deleting it. Copy the backed-up files into the destination path, preserving the same directory structure the game expects. If the developer instructs you to rename a file, change an extension, or place files in a specific profile folder, perform only those documented changes.

8. Launch and verify the actual progress
Start the destination build and load the intended profile or slot. Check the latest location, inventory, unlocked achievements or equivalent progress, and more than one save slot if applicable. Saving once in the destination build can update the format, so keep the original backup until you have confirmed that the new save loads after a complete exit and relaunch.
9. Resolve any cloud prompt deliberately
If a conflict appears, stop and compare the local and cloud timestamps or the launcher’s descriptions. Epic’s documented guidance is to choose the newer file in its conflict dialog. For other launchers, follow the game’s or platform’s instructions; do not click through a conflict without knowing which copy contains your progress.
Launcher-specific guidance
Steam
Steam Cloud can synchronize save games and other user-specific data, but only for games that use the feature. Steam Support states that many games do not use Steam Cloud for saves and that support cannot recover lost saves or resolve cloud conflicts; the developer is the authority for finding and transferring a game’s files.

Within these folders, Steam groups data under account and application identifiers. These locations describe Steam’s local cloud files; they are not a guarantee that every game’s only working saves are there.
Steamworks documentation describes two integration methods: Auto-Cloud and files written through the Steam Cloud API. Configured files are synchronized after the game exits and downloaded before launch on another computer. Cross-platform behavior depends on the developer’s path and synchronization settings, so the words “Steam Cloud” alone do not promise cross-platform or cross-launcher transfer.
Steam’s “Backup game files” feature backs up installation files, not every user file. Valve-created backups exclude saved games, custom multiplayer maps, and configuration files, and games using third-party installers may not work with the feature. After restoring an installation, you may still need to copy saves into the corresponding folder.

Epic Games Store
Epic Support gives %LOCALAPPDATA%EpicGamesLauncherSavedSaves[EpicGamesAccountID][Yourgamefolder] as a place to make a copy of a local save, while warning that individual games may use another location. Check the common Windows paths listed earlier and, preferably, the title’s own support instructions.

Epic cloud conflicts can follow offline play or activity on multiple devices. The prompt presents two choices; Epic’s support guidance says to select the newer file. Make a separate backup before resolving a conflict so that either choice remains recoverable.
GOG GALAXY
GOG’s developer documentation says that supported games can synchronize files in a specified local directory when the game launches or closes. Developers can also use an SDK storage interface for more complex local and remote handling. This is an integration capability, not evidence that every GOG title has cloud saves enabled. Verify support for the individual game and keep a manual copy.
Other launchers and storefront editions
For a launcher not covered above, use the game’s developer documentation as the source of truth. A title may maintain separate folders for each storefront or use an account service that changes how saves are identified. Never infer compatibility from the fact that the game has the same name, executable, or publisher.

A utility such as Ludusavi can reduce path-hunting across Steam, GOG, Epic, Heroic, Lutris, and other libraries. Its project documentation describes backup and restore for file-based saves and Windows registry data. It uses a manifest to determine what to back up, with information primarily sourced from PCGamingWiki.
That manifest is a convenience layer, not a guarantee. A game can be missing from the manifest, have an incomplete entry, store data in an unusual location, or require a conversion that a file copier cannot perform. After a utility backup, inspect the included paths, keep an independent copy, and test the restored game exactly as you would a manual backup.

No official source establishes a universal compatibility ranking among storefronts. The meaningful questions are whether the title supports cloud saves, whether you have an independent copy, how the path is configured, and whether the destination build accepts the format.
Troubleshooting common failures
The destination game starts from the beginning
- Exit without overwriting the backup.
- Confirm that you restored the correct profile, edition, and save slot.
- Recheck the developer’s destination path; do not rely on a similarly named folder.
- Compare file modified dates and sizes with the source copy.
- Check whether the game requires an account identifier, registry entry, or documented conversion.
The launcher keeps replacing the restored save
A cloud service may be downloading its older version. Preserve both copies, then follow the launcher’s conflict or offline procedure. Resolve the conflict only after identifying which version contains the desired progress.
The game reports a corrupt or incompatible save
Restore the untouched original and confirm that the source build still loads it. The destination may require the same game edition, a newer or older patch, a different operating-system format, or a developer-provided migration step. A copied file cannot repair a format mismatch.

There is no obvious save folder
Search the developer’s support documentation first, then inspect the common user-data paths. Enable viewing of hidden files where appropriate. Some games write to a registry or a launcher-managed directory; a folder-only backup may be incomplete in those cases.
Steam’s game backup restored the game but not the progress
That is expected when the save was excluded from the installation backup. Locate the game’s separate save folder and restore your independent copy after the installation is working.
How to maintain reliable backups
- Keep at least one copy outside the game and launcher folders.
- Use dated names so you can roll back to a known-good state.
- Back up before changing launchers, computers, operating systems, or major game versions.
- Retain several generations for games with long campaigns or frequent corruption problems.
- After a successful migration, make a fresh backup from the destination build rather than reusing only the old source copy.
Bottom line
Close the game, verify cloud status, find the title-specific save path, copy the complete save data to separate storage, and restore it only into the destination build’s documented location. Test the result before deleting anything. Steam, Epic, and GOG cloud features can simplify the process when a game supports them, but none removes the need for a manual backup or guarantees that saves transfer between storefront versions.
