There is no universal way to move a mobile game save. The game developer decides whether progress is stored in a game account, Google Play Games, Apple iCloud/Game Center, an online service, or only on the phone. Before uninstalling, wiping, or trading in the old device, open the game, identify its supported save method, complete that method, and verify the restored profile on the new device while the old installation is still available.
A full Android or iPhone backup can contain app data, but it is not proof that a particular game save will return. Same-platform moves are usually simpler when the game supports the same platform account. Android-to-iOS and iOS-to-Android transfers require explicit support from that game.
Why mobile game saves are different from phone backups
A mobile game can keep progress in several places:
- Developer account or cloud service: the game uploads progress to an account created or linked inside the game.
- Platform service: a supported title may use Google Play Games on Android or iCloud and Game Center on Apple devices.
- Local app storage: the save exists only on the current phone or tablet.
- Hybrid storage: local and cloud copies coexist and the game must decide which one wins after a reinstall.
These systems are controlled by the game, not by the phone operating system alone. Google Play Help states, “Not all games automatically save your progress.” Google also says it does not manage in-app data or game accounts; if the game’s own account checks do not recover a save, the developer is the party that can investigate it.
An Android device backup is a separate layer. Google lists app data among data that may be backed up, while warning that apps differ in what they can back up and restore. Apple’s continuity feature likewise applies only to supported games. A phone backup can therefore be useful insurance without being a guaranteed game-save export.

The safe pre-transfer procedure
Use this sequence before deleting the old app, resetting the phone, or handing the device to someone else.
- Open the game on the old device while online. Wait for the title screen and load the profile that contains the progress you want. An offline session may not have uploaded recent play.
- Inspect the game’s own menus. Look in Settings, Account, Profile, Cloud Save, Link Account, Transfer, Backup, or Support. Names differ by title. Record the player ID, user name, server or region, and linked email if the game displays them.
- Read the current support article for that exact game. Determine whether it uses a developer login, Google Play Games, Game Center/iCloud, a one-time transfer code, or only local storage. Do not infer the method from the fact that the game appears in an app store.
- Link or sign in before you move anything. If the game offers account linking, complete it from the old device. If it has a Save, Sync, Upload, or Transfer button, run that action and wait for its confirmation, timestamp, or synced indicator.
- Take note of the account that was actually linked. A phone can hold several Google Accounts, and an Apple device can use different Apple Accounts for different services. The account shown inside the game is the one that must be used on the replacement device.
- Keep the old installation intact. Do not uninstall the game or factory-reset the device until the new device has loaded the expected level, inventory, settings, and other important progress.
- Install the same title on the new device and use the supported sign-in. Start with the account or platform service named by the game’s instructions. Avoid creating a new guest profile if the game asks whether to load existing data.
- Compare the result with the old screen. Check more than the level number: currency, unlocked content, achievements, character inventory, and the last-played date can reveal that an older or different profile loaded.
If any screen offers a choice between local and cloud data, stop and read the descriptions before choosing. Accepting the wrong option can replace the copy you meant to keep.
Identify the save method your game supports

The table describes common designs, not promises for every title. The game’s support documentation and its own confirmation messages take precedence.

Developer accounts and in-game cloud saves
This is often the most flexible design because the developer controls the identity and server-side record. A game may use an email login, a social sign-in, a publisher account, or a generated player ID. Some games let you link a guest profile; others create a new account and leave the guest save behind. Verify the displayed player identity before linking, and capture any recovery code exactly as instructed by the developer.
Google Play Games on Android
For a title that explicitly supports Google Play Games, sign in to the same Google Account on the new Android device. Google’s player guidance includes checking whether the game supports Play Games and confirming which account is selected. Merely installing Play Games or having several accounts on the phone does not prove that this title saved to the account you expect.

iCloud and Game Center on Apple devices
Apple says that, “On supported games, you can use iCloud and Game Center to keep your progress, high scores and game saves up to date across your devices.” The qualification matters: an iPhone game may use neither service, may use only one, or may require its own login. Use the same Apple Account and Game Center identity on the replacement Apple device, then follow the game’s startup prompt rather than creating a fresh profile.
Guest or local-only progress
Android Developers describes guest mode as tied to a single device. A similar local-only arrangement can exist on other platforms. If the game has no link, export, or cloud option, assume that uninstalling the app or losing the device can remove the save. Ask the developer whether an account conversion or manual transfer exists before making changes.
Moving from Android to Android
Use this path when both devices run Android and the game documents support for the same account or service.
- On the old device, open the game online and wait for its last save or synchronization indicator.
- In the game’s account or settings screen, verify the linked Google Account, Play Games profile, or developer account. If it shows a guest label, link it using the game’s own control before continuing.
- Write down the player ID and any server or region information. Do not publish passwords, one-time codes, or recovery tokens.
- On the new device, add and select the identical Google Account. Open Google Play Games and confirm that the intended account is active if the title uses that service.
- Install the identical game edition. Regional, beta, and separately branded editions can use different save systems.
- At the first launch, choose the option to sign in or load cloud progress. If the title asks whether to keep local or cloud data, select only after reading which copy will replace the other.
- Confirm several pieces of progress. Leave the old device untouched until the new copy is clearly correct.
If the game uses a developer login instead of Play Games, the Google Account is not the deciding identity; repeat the process with the developer account named in the game.
Moving from iPhone or iPad to another Apple device
- On the original device, connect to the internet and open the game to the profile you want to preserve.
- Check the game’s account page and Apple services. Confirm the Apple Account used for iCloud and the Game Center account shown to the game.
- Use the game’s Link, Cloud Save, or sign-in command if it provides one. Wait for a success message or a current synchronization time.
- On the new iPhone or iPad, sign in with the same Apple Account and enable the services the game requires. Do not assume that restoring the phone alone activates the game’s server account.
- Install the same title and follow its existing-player or restore prompt. If no progress appears, stop before beginning a new tutorial that could create a competing local save.
- Compare the restored profile with the old device, including unlocks and currency, before erasing the original.
Apple’s documented continuity is limited to supported games and Apple devices. A game that stores saves only in its own servers may require its separate login, while a local-only game may not have a supported migration at all.

Changing between Android and iOS
Do not treat a platform backup as a cross-platform converter. Android and Apple use different platform services, and the game developer must deliberately connect the two identities or expose an independent account system.

Check the developer’s support page before moving. Ask three specific questions:
- Can this exact title transfer progress between Android and iOS?
- What account, player ID, or transfer code is required?
- Will purchases, downloadable content, subscriptions, and competitive rankings follow the save, or are they platform-specific?
Developer policies can differ even within one publisher. SEGA’s support article for Sonic Dash, updated November 3, 2025, says progress can restore after signing in to the linked Google Play Games or Game Center account, but saves cannot transfer between Android and iOS. First Touch Games likewise documents platform-specific restrictions for some of its titles. These examples show why a method that works in one game cannot be generalized to another.
If cross-platform transfer is unsupported, keep the old device or platform account available until you have decided whether to start over. Do not pay for a cable, generic transfer app, or USB drive on the assumption that it can read a protected game save; the game may never expose that data to those tools.
Why a full phone backup may not restore the game
Device backup and game-cloud synchronization solve different problems. A device backup is designed to help restore a phone’s apps and settings. The game may exclude its save, encrypt it for one installation, require a server login after restore, or restore only an older snapshot. Google explicitly warns that not all apps can back up or restore all settings and data.

Use device backup as an additional safety layer, not as the only action:
- Complete the game’s own link or cloud-save process first.
- Run the platform backup before a reset when the device supports it.
- After restoration, launch the game and verify the actual profile rather than assuming that installation equals recovery.
- Keep the old device until verification is complete.
Restoring a backup onto a different operating system does not establish compatibility. An Android backup cannot make an iOS-only save format readable on an iPhone, and vice versa.

A conflict usually appears when the new installation has a fresh local profile while the server has an older linked save, or when both copies contain changes. Android Developers’ cloud-save guidance says the game needs a conflict-resolution policy and should show users the detected progress and consequences of choosing one copy.
Read the comparison screen
Look for level, timestamp, device name, chapter, or other identifying details. A “newer” label may refer to the upload time rather than the amount of progress, so compare the actual content when possible.
Preserve evidence before choosing
Take screenshots of the options and note the old device’s displayed profile. Do not repeatedly launch and play on both devices while undecided; each session can create another version.

Choose the intended source once
Select the copy that contains the progress you mean to keep, then wait for the game to finish syncing. If the game provides no explanation or the values look wrong, cancel if possible and contact the developer rather than guessing.
What to do when progress is missing
- Stop playing on the new profile. New activity can overwrite or complicate the state you are trying to recover.
- Check the game identity. Confirm the email, Google Account, Apple Account, player ID, server, region, and edition match the old installation.
- Reconnect to the required service. Sign out and back in only as the game’s instructions permit; some titles warn that unlinking can remove access.
- Restart after synchronization. Close and reopen the game on a reliable connection, then look for its restore or cloud-load command.
- Compare timestamps and profiles. A different save may have loaded successfully, which is an account-selection problem rather than data loss.
- Use the developer’s support channel. Provide the player ID, linked account identifier, old and new device models, operating-system versions, game version, approximate last successful session, and screenshots. Share only through the official support form; never post passwords, authentication codes, or transfer tokens publicly.
Google directs players to the game developer when its Play Games account checks do not solve an in-app data problem. The developer can see title-specific server records and policies that Google or Apple cannot change.
Before uninstalling, resetting, or selling the old device
- Have you opened the correct profile while online?
- Have you identified the game’s actual save method from its current support instructions?
- Is the profile linked to a named account rather than still marked guest?
- Did the game display a completed upload, sync, or transfer confirmation?
- Do you know which Google Account, Apple Account, Game Center identity, or developer login is required?
- Has the new device loaded the expected progress and not merely a new tutorial?
- Have you checked important content such as inventory, unlocks, currency, and achievements?
- Have you retained the old device until those checks passed?
Only after these checks should you remove the old installation or erase the device. If the title has no supported export or account link, treat the save as local and ask its developer for options before proceeding.

If reliable transfer matters to you, evaluate the game’s save design before investing significant time. The useful questions are more specific than “does it have cloud saves?”

These details are title-specific and can change when a game updates. Recheck the developer’s current instructions before a major device move.
