Before switching Samsung phones, make a separate backup if you want a copy to restore later, then use Samsung Smart Switch to move supported content to the new Galaxy. A transfer is not a guarantee that every app, login, protected file, or cloud-synced item will arrive. Check the new phone and handle app-specific backups before wiping or trading in the old one.

Choose between a direct transfer and a separate backup

Samsung Smart Switch can move supported content directly between phones, or back up a phone to a PC or Mac so you can restore it later. Samsung also documents external-storage options for supported devices. The right choice depends on whether you want a second copy, what devices you have, and which connection methods they support.

Method Best for What to check
Wireless Smart Switch Moving data directly when both phones are available and you do not need a computer backup. Both devices need a working connection. Transfer time depends on the amount of data and connection; there is no reliable universal duration.
USB cable A direct wired transfer, or connecting a phone to a computer. Confirm the devices and cable are compatible. For a PC or Mac backup, Samsung specifies a cable that supports data transfer.
PC or Mac backup and restore Keeping a separate local copy before setting up the new Galaxy. You need a compatible computer, Smart Switch, available computer storage, and a data-capable cable.
SD card or USB storage Using external storage when the phone supports the required option. Check the phone’s support for the storage type and connector before buying anything.

Smart Switch transfers to Galaxy devices; Samsung’s US transfer guide says it does not transfer content to an iOS destination. It can accept Android and iOS source devices, but the supported items depend on the connected devices. Samsung’s UK Smart Switch overview, updated October 8, 2026, lists Android 4.3 and iOS 4.2.1 or later as minimum platform versions on that page. Those listed minimums do not guarantee that a particular device or feature is compatible, so check Samsung’s current compatibility information for your devices.

Prepare both phones before starting

Do not erase, reset, or trade in the old phone yet. Keep it available until you have checked the new phone and regained access to the accounts and apps you need. A little preparation reduces the chance of getting stuck mid-transfer or discovering that an important item was excluded.

  • Check that the new phone has enough free space for the content you intend to move.
  • Make sure you can sign in to the Google and Samsung accounts you use, and have any required account-recovery details available.
  • Identify apps whose data matters, such as messaging, authenticator, banking, or work apps. Check each app’s current official backup, transfer, or recovery instructions separately.
  • If you plan to use a computer, confirm that you have a cable that carries data, not just power, and enough storage available on the computer.
  • If you plan to use an SD card or USB storage, verify that the phone supports the storage device and connector you intend to use.

Transfer directly between phones with Smart Switch

Choose wireless when both phones are available and you do not need a local computer backup. A cable can be preferable when the devices and cable support a wired transfer. Samsung’s Caribbean guide, updated July 23, 2026, describes wireless transfer; its US guide documents cable and external-storage options. The precise prompts and available content can vary by device.

Wireless transfer

  1. Open or install Smart Switch on both phones. Keep the devices near each other while following the prompts.
  2. Start the transfer on the new Galaxy and choose the option to receive data from the old device. Follow the on-screen connection instructions.
  3. When prompted, allow the connection on the old phone. Unlock it if necessary.
  4. Review the content categories Smart Switch offers and select what you want to move. Do not assume that an item is included just because the app is transferring other data.
  5. Start the transfer and keep both phones available until Smart Switch indicates it has finished.
  6. Continue with the new phone’s setup as needed, then check the important content and apps listed in the verification section below.

Connection quality and the amount of data affect transfer time. If the wireless connection drops or the transfer does not finish, follow Smart Switch’s on-screen recovery prompts; the available choices depend on the devices and software version. Do not erase the old phone as a workaround.

USB cable transfer

  1. Open Smart Switch on the new Galaxy and select the option to receive data from another device.
  2. Connect the old phone using a compatible cable and any adapter required by the devices.
  3. Unlock the old phone and allow the connection if prompted.
  4. Choose the content Smart Switch offers to transfer, then start the process and wait for it to complete.
  5. Check the new Galaxy before disconnecting from the migration process or erasing the old phone.

The cable and connected devices determine which wired options are available. A cable that charges a phone is not necessarily suitable for computer backup; Samsung specifically calls for a data-transfer-capable cable for its PC or Mac backup workflow.

Create a PC or Mac backup, then restore it

A computer backup gives you a separate local copy to restore from, rather than relying only on a direct phone-to-phone transfer. Samsung’s UK guide, “How to backup your Samsung phone to PC or Mac,” updated June 19, 2026, describes the desktop workflow and says you can select backup items in Smart Switch.

Back up the old phone

  1. Install Smart Switch on the PC or Mac.
  2. Connect the old Samsung phone to the computer using a cable that supports data transfer.
  3. Unlock the phone and allow the connection or access request if it appears.
  4. Open Smart Switch on the computer and select Backup.
  5. If the app offers a choice of items, review the selection and choose what you want included. Let the backup finish before disconnecting the phone.

Restore to the new Galaxy

  1. Connect the new Galaxy to the computer with a compatible data cable and allow the connection on the phone if prompted.
  2. Open Smart Switch on the computer and select Restore.
  3. Select the backup you want to use if the app asks you to choose one.
  4. Review the available restore items and confirm the restore.
  5. When it finishes, check the restored content on the phone. A desktop restore does not make excluded app data, protected content, or account-synced items transferable.

Labels and prompts may differ across Smart Switch versions and computer operating systems. If a phone is not detected, first check that it is unlocked, that you allowed the connection, and that the cable supports data transfer. The exact troubleshooting steps depend on the computer and phone.

Use external storage only when the device supports it

Samsung documents backup to an SD card and transfer using external storage, including a USB flash drive, for supported devices. This can be useful when a direct connection or computer is not the route you want, but it is not a universal option for every Galaxy.

  1. Check the old and new phone’s storage and connector support before choosing an SD card or USB drive.
  2. Open Smart Switch and look for the external-storage option available on that device.
  3. Follow the app’s prompts to back up or transfer the selected content to the storage device.
  4. Connect the storage device to the new Galaxy using a compatible slot, connector, or adapter, then use Smart Switch to transfer supported items.
  5. Verify the result on the new phone before removing or reformatting the storage device.

Do not buy a card, drive, or adapter on the assumption that all Samsung phones support the same storage path. Samsung’s US transfer guide and Caribbean Smart Switch guide document external-storage routes, but the available method depends on the phone.

Know what Smart Switch may not move

Smart Switch should be treated as a migration tool for supported content, not a complete image of the old phone. Samsung’s PC/Mac and content-transfer guidance identifies several exclusions and differences that matter when deciding whether the old device is safe to erase.

  • Secure or encrypted app data: Samsung says secure or encrypted data may not transfer. Its UK PC/Mac guidance specifically describes secure or encrypted data, including WhatsApp chats, as not transferring through that backup workflow.
  • DRM-protected content: Samsung says DRM-protected content cannot be transferred with Smart Switch.
  • Some app data and logins: Some app data and sign-in details may not move. Expect to sign in again where needed, and use the app maker’s current official migration or recovery process for important data.
  • Apps unavailable on the destination: App availability differs between Google Play and Apple’s App Store, and an app may not have an equivalent on the destination platform. Smart Switch cannot make an unavailable app available.
  • Data synced to an account: Account-synced data may not move through Smart Switch. It may appear after you add the relevant account to the new phone and allow it to sync.
  • Device-specific options: Supported items vary with the source and destination devices. A category shown for one pair of phones may not be offered for another.

For messaging apps and other apps with their own migration features, follow that app’s current official instructions rather than assuming a Smart Switch backup contains the app’s private data. Samsung’s guidance can change, and the process may be different for a direct transfer than for a computer backup.

Verify the new phone before wiping the old one

Once the transfer or restore completes, spend time using the new Galaxy while the old phone is still available. Samsung warns about exclusions and device-dependent support; the checks below are a prudent way to catch gaps before you lose access to the source phone.

  • Contacts: Open the contacts app and check for important people. If some contacts are account-synced, confirm that the relevant account has been added and had time to sync.
  • Photos and videos: Open the gallery or file location where you expect them, and check a selection of older and recent items.
  • Messages: Check the message history you need. Treat chats in apps such as WhatsApp as a separate app-specific migration task, not as guaranteed Smart Switch content.
  • Files: Look for essential documents and downloads in their expected locations, including any files you chose to transfer.
  • Critical apps: Open important apps and confirm they work. Sign in again where required, and complete any app-specific restore or recovery procedure.
  • Accounts: Confirm that you can access your Google and Samsung accounts and any other accounts needed for daily use.
  • Backup copy: If you made a computer or external-storage backup, confirm that the backup or storage device remains available until you are confident you no longer need it.

If something is missing, keep the old phone unchanged and available. Check whether the content was excluded, whether it belongs to an account that still needs to sync, or whether its app requires a separate transfer process. Do not treat a completed progress indicator as proof that every app or file arrived.

Erase or trade in the old phone only after verification

When the new phone has the content and access you need, follow the appropriate factory-reset and trade-in steps for the old device. The exact reset procedure depends on its model and software version, so use the current instructions for that phone. Keep any computer backup or external copy you want to retain; a factory reset removes local access to data on the old phone.

Samsung’s support pages explain transfer capabilities and exclusions, but they do not prescribe one universal trade-in checklist. Make the decision based on your own verification: if an important file, account, or app is still unconfirmed, postpone erasing the source phone.

Which backup options can supplement Smart Switch?

Samsung identifies Samsung Cloud, Google-account backup, and Smart Switch as backup options for Galaxy devices. The available steps depend on the phone’s operating system and settings; Samsung’s UK backup-and-restore article, updated January 8, 2026, addresses those options. An account backup is not a substitute for checking app-specific data or for confirming the items you need on the new phone.

Use the backup option that applies to your device and account, and verify what it covers before relying on it. For data that belongs to a particular app, follow that app’s own current instructions. Avoid assuming that a cloud backup, Smart Switch transfer, and app-specific backup contain identical information.
