If you suspect an iPhone compromise, do not erase it immediately. First use Settings > Privacy & Security > Safety Check to review sharing, apps, connected devices and account security. Then secure the Apple Account. Make a backup only when it is safe and useful. If you believe someone had physical access, tampered with iOS security or installed stalkerware, erase the iPhone and set it up as new instead of restoring a backup.
These situations are different: unwanted sharing or app access, Apple Account takeover, and malicious software installed after device tampering require different responses. Apple’s guidance supports a factory restore for the last situation, not as an automatic answer to every suspicious sign.
Choose the right response before changing anything
A person who may be monitoring you could notice a password change, revoked sharing permission or deleted data. If that possibility exists, consider your physical safety and privacy before taking visible action. Safety Check includes a Quick Exit option, but leaving the screen does not undo changes already made.
| What you suspect | First action | Should you erase? |
|---|---|---|
| Someone has access to your location, photos, messages or other sharing | Use Safety Check’s Manage Sharing & Access review. Use Emergency Reset only when you need to stop sharing broadly. | Not automatically. Review and revoke access first. |
| Your Apple Account was signed in by another person | Change the account password, correct account details, remove unknown devices and verify every email address and phone number. | Not automatically. Account security is a separate problem from device software. |
| Someone had physical access and may have tampered with built-in security or installed stalkerware | Preserve only data you can safely preserve, then follow Apple’s factory-restore guidance. | Yes, an erase is the appropriate Apple-documented response for this specific scenario. Set up as new rather than restoring a backup. |
Apple’s Personal Safety Guide describes the reset case as suspected tampering and malicious-software installation. It does not say that every account warning, battery change or unfamiliar app proves malware.

Review sharing and device access with Safety Check
Safety Check works on an iPhone running iOS 16 or later. You must be signed in to an Apple Account with two-factor authentication enabled. Its controls can be limited by Screen Time restrictions or a mobile-device-management profile.
Open Manage Sharing & Access
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security, then Safety Check.
- Choose Manage Sharing & Access.
- Review people and apps that can access shared information. Examine connected Apple Account devices, verification phone numbers and other account or device security details.
- Remove sharing or access you do not recognize, taking into account whether doing so could alert someone who may pose a safety risk.
Manage Sharing & Access is a review-and-select process. It lets you make targeted changes instead of wiping the phone.
Use Emergency Reset when broad shutdown is necessary
- From Settings > Privacy & Security > Safety Check, select Emergency Reset.
- Follow the prompts to stop sharing broadly.
- Review the offered checks for emergency contacts, connected devices, verification numbers and account or device security.
- Use Quick Exit if you need to leave Safety Check quickly.
Emergency Reset is intentionally broad. If a restriction or management profile prevents a control from appearing, that limitation does not prove the phone is compromised; it means the device’s configuration is controlling what Safety Check can change. Apple’s feature details are in its Safety Check guide.

Secure a potentially compromised Apple Account
An Apple Account can be abused even when the iPhone itself has not been tampered with. Treat account recovery as its own workstream.
Change the password and correct account details
- Change the Apple Account password to a strong, unique password that you have not used elsewhere.
- Correct personal or security information that an intruder may have changed.
- Review every associated email address and phone number. Confirm that you still control each one.
- Ask your mobile provider whether SMS forwarding has been enabled on an associated number. Unexpected forwarding can divert verification messages.
Remove unfamiliar devices and restore sign-in control
- Review the devices listed under the Apple Account and remove any device you do not recognize.
- After regaining access, check which Apple Account is signed in on each of your devices and services.
- Enable two-factor authentication if it is not already enabled.
- For highly targeted attacks, consider Apple’s Security Keys option as an additional phishing-resistant measure. It strengthens account authentication; it does not certify that iOS is free of malicious software.
If you cannot reset the password or sign in, use Apple’s account-recovery route at iforgot.apple.com. Apple’s complete compromised-account checklist, published December 16, 2025, is available at Apple Support.
Decide whether making a backup is safe and useful
A backup preserves data, but it can also preserve a problem. The correct choice depends on why you are resetting the phone, not simply on whether a backup is convenient.

| Backup route | Equipment and connection | Encryption details | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| iCloud backup | No computer is required; the iPhone uses an internet connection. | Apple encrypts iCloud backups. Under Standard Data Protection, Apple says 14 data categories receive end-to-end encryption. Optional Advanced Data Protection raises that figure to 23 categories and includes iCloud Backup, Photos and Notes. | In a suspected-tampering or malicious-software case, Apple says not to restore from a backup because it may reinstall the software. |
| Computer backup | A Mac or Windows PC and a USB cable are required for the documented restore route. | Local backups are not encrypted by default. You can turn on Encrypt local backup and create a backup password. | The backup password is required to use an encrypted local backup. The same malware-restore warning applies when the reason for erasing is suspected malicious software. |
Apple describes Standard Data Protection as the default iCloud setting. With Advanced Data Protection, trusted devices retain sole access to encryption keys for most iCloud data. These are Apple’s descriptions of its service, not an independent security measurement. Apple’s current explanation is in Store your data securely in iCloud.

Make an iCloud backup when the situation permits
Use this route when you need a copy of personal data and there is no Apple-specific reason to avoid restoring it later. Keep the phone connected to Wi-Fi and power while the backup runs. On current iOS releases, open Settings, open the Apple Account section at the top, choose iCloud, then iCloud Backup and Back Up Now. The exact placement of the control can vary by iOS release.
- Confirm that you are signed in to the Apple Account you intend to keep.
- Open the iCloud Backup controls and start Back Up Now.
- Wait for the backup to complete before erasing anything.
- When you later set up the iPhone, review the available backup’s date and size before selecting it.
If the suspected compromise involves tampering or stalkerware, stop at the backup decision: Apple specifically says not to restore a backup in that scenario. A backup made for evidence or personal records is not a reason to put its contents back onto the erased phone.
Create an encrypted computer backup
A computer backup is useful when you want a local copy or when network access is limited. Apple’s documented route uses a USB cable. Check both ports before buying a cable; Apple’s general directions do not specify a connector for every iPhone-and-computer combination.
On a Mac
- Connect the iPhone to the Mac with a USB cable.
- On macOS Catalina 10.15 or later, open Finder and select the iPhone in the sidebar.
- Choose the backup option and turn on Encrypt local backup.
- Create a backup password and store it securely. You need this password to use the encrypted backup.
- Start the backup and wait for completion before disconnecting the phone.
On Windows
- Connect the iPhone to the Windows PC with a USB cable.
- Open the Apple Devices app on Windows 10 or later and select the iPhone.
- Enable Encrypt local backup, set a password and start the backup.
- Keep the cable connected until the backup finishes.
Apple says encrypted local backups can include saved passwords, Wi-Fi settings, website history, Health data and call history. They do not include Face ID data, Touch ID data or the device passcode. Its technical explanation is at About encrypted backups.
Know when Apple’s warning means “set up as new”
Apple’s factory-reset guidance applies when someone may have had physical access, tampered with built-in security and installed malicious software such as stalkerware. In that situation, Apple says:

- Erase all data and settings.
- Remove apps, including apps installed without your knowledge.
- Reset privacy settings.
- Install the latest operating-system software.
The same guide gives these practical requirements: internet access, the device passcode or password, the Apple Account password and enough time to complete the process.
Do not restore from a backup in this specific scenario. Apple’s wording is explicit: a backup may reinstall the malicious software you are trying to remove. Set up the iPhone as a new device, then reinstall only apps you obtain directly from the App Store and sign in to accounts after you have secured them. This warning is not a blanket statement that every Apple Account compromise makes every backup unsafe.
Erase the iPhone securely
- Make sure you have the passcode and Apple Account password available.
- Confirm that you have completed any safety-sensitive review and secured the Apple Account.
- If you are preserving data for a non-malware situation, complete the appropriate iCloud or encrypted computer backup first.
- Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Choose Erase All Content and Settings and follow the prompts.
- Keep the iPhone connected to power and connected to the internet when practical until the erase completes.
The erase removes personal data, settings and apps and installs the latest operating-system version, according to Apple’s factory-reset guidance.

If you erased the iPhone for a non-malware reason and have a trusted backup, Apple’s setup process lets you select a backup. Review its date and size first, sign in to the Apple Account, and leave the phone on Wi-Fi and power while content returns. Restoration time depends on backup size and network speed.
Restore an iCloud backup
- During iPhone setup, choose the option to restore from an iCloud backup.
- Sign in to the Apple Account that owns the backup.
- Compare the listed backup dates and sizes, then select the appropriate one.
- Keep the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi and power until the restore and follow-on downloads finish.
Restore a computer backup
- During setup, connect the iPhone to the computer with a USB cable.
- On macOS Catalina 10.15 or later, use Finder. On Windows 10 or later, use Apple Devices.
- Choose the restore-from-computer-backup option.
- Select the backup by date and size.
- Enter the encrypted-backup password if prompted, then wait for completion.
Apple’s step-by-step restore article is available at Restore your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch from a backup. Do not use these restore steps when the erase was prompted by suspected tampering and malicious-software installation; use the set-up-as-new path instead.
Set up and verify a clean-start iPhone
After a malware-focused erase, configure the phone as new rather than importing the old app and settings state. Sign in only after the Apple Account password has been changed and unknown devices have been removed.

- Turn on two-factor authentication if it was not already enabled.
- Review Apple Account devices and trusted verification numbers again.
- Grant location, microphone, camera, contacts and photo access only to apps that need it.
- Install apps individually from the App Store, checking the developer name and permissions before installation.
- Recheck Safety Check after setup to confirm that sharing is limited to people and apps you recognize.
A clean setup reduces the chance of reintroducing an unwanted app or setting, but it cannot repair a compromised email account, mobile number or another online service. Secure those accounts separately.
Troubleshooting and common mistakes
Safety Check is missing
Verify that the iPhone runs iOS 16 or later, that an Apple Account is signed in and that two-factor authentication is enabled. Screen Time restrictions or a mobile-device-management profile can limit Safety Check controls.
You cannot regain Apple Account access
Use Apple’s account-recovery process at iforgot.apple.com. Do not keep guessing passwords or rely on an email address or phone number you no longer control.
The computer backup will not restore
Encrypted local backups require the password created when encryption was enabled. Face ID, Touch ID and the device passcode are never included in that backup, so they cannot be recovered from it.
You are tempted to restore a backup after a suspected malware installation
Do not do so. Apple’s specific warning exists because the backup may reinstall the malicious software. Complete a clean setup and add data selectively instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou want to treat every suspicious symptom as proof of malware
Do not diagnose a compromise from battery drain, heat, slowness or an unfamiliar notification alone. Apple’s cited reset guidance supports an erase for suspected physical tampering and malicious-software installation; its account and sharing guidance covers other situations without claiming that malware is present.
