To save a Samsung Galaxy home screen, use Settings > Accounts and backup > Samsung Cloud > Back up data and select Home screen if it appears. To bring that layout back, choose Restore data in Samsung Cloud. When moving to another Galaxy, Samsung Smart Switch can transfer the Home layout directly. The options available depend on your device, software, country, and carrier, so check what your phone actually offers before relying on a backup.
Choose the right method for your situation

Samsung Cloud and wireless Smart Switch are built-in options; neither documented path requires buying a cable or other physical product. Smart Switch also supports USB and computer transfer, and can back up to a PC or SD card and restore that backup to a phone.
The two services solve slightly different problems. Cloud is convenient when the phone has already been reset or when you are setting up a Galaxy and want to retrieve a saved Samsung backup. Smart Switch is designed for a device-to-device move and can send the layout directly from the old Galaxy. You can use either where the relevant option appears, but do not assume that a Cloud backup and a Smart Switch transfer contain exactly the same categories. The selection screen on the actual devices is the authority.

- Open Settings > Accounts and backup.
- Under Samsung Cloud, tap Back up data.
- Select Home screen if it is offered. Choose any other items you want included in the backup.
- Tap Back up now, then tap Done when the backup finishes.
Samsung describes the Cloud category as covering the home screen layout, eligible wallpapers, and Samsung DeX settings. Samsung’s wording is: “Home screen: layout, wallpapers (excluding default wallpapers) and Samsung DeX settings.” In practical terms, the category is intended to preserve the arrangement of the Home screen and eligible wallpaper settings, not to promise that every visual or app-related detail from every Galaxy model will be reproduced.

The list of backup items can differ by model and operating system, and Samsung Cloud availability can differ by country and mobile carrier. If Home screen is absent from the list on your phone, do not assume that the layout is included. A missing option is a reason to stop and check the available transfer choices before a reset, rather than discovering afterward that there was no Cloud copy of the arrangement.
Verify the backup before you need it
After tapping Back up now, remain on the backup screen until the process reports completion. The goal is not merely to open the menu but to create a current backup that visibly includes Home screen. If you are preparing to erase the phone, take a moment to open the list again and confirm that the category is present in the backup. This check also helps distinguish an older backup from the one you just made.
Samsung states that files larger than 1 GB cannot be backed up to Samsung Cloud. That is a limit on files included in a Cloud backup; it does not mean that the Home screen layout itself is a 1 GB file. It does mean that you should not treat Samsung Cloud as an unrestricted copy of every possible item on the phone. Use the categories shown on the device and make a separate plan for anything that is not listed.

Automatic backup conditions
Samsung says automatic Samsung Cloud backup requires the phone to be charging, its screen to be off, and a Wi-Fi connection. If you need a backup before resetting or changing phones, use Back up now and check that the process completes instead of relying on an automatic backup that may not yet have run. Automatic backup is useful for routine protection, but the manual command gives you a clear point at which to verify the latest layout was submitted.
Restore a Samsung Cloud home screen backup
- On the Galaxy phone, open Settings > Accounts and backup.
- Under Samsung Cloud, tap Restore data.
- Select the backup for the phone you want to restore.
- Select Home screen, along with any other backup items you want, then tap Restore.
- Tap Done when the restore finishes and review the Home screen.
Samsung supports Cloud restore after a factory reset and when setting up a new Galaxy. The backup and restore choices shown can vary, so follow the options on the device. If the backup list does not include Home screen, that backup cannot restore the home screen through this selection. Choose only the categories you need, or select additional listed categories if you are also restoring other supported settings.
When the process finishes, inspect every Home screen page instead of checking only the first page. Look for the main screen, page order, folders, shortcuts, widgets, and wallpaper. A restore can be useful even if a few pieces need attention, but the review tells you whether you should continue with manual rebuilding. If you are restoring during initial setup, some labels may be presented as part of the setup flow rather than exactly where they appear on an already configured phone.
Transfer the layout to another Galaxy with Smart Switch
Smart Switch can transfer data between phones wirelessly or by USB, and can also work with a computer. Samsung lists Home layout (Galaxy devices only) among information transferable from Android devices. A direct transfer is the most natural choice when both the old and new phones are available and you want the new Galaxy to receive the layout from the old one.

For a direct phone-to-phone wireless transfer, Samsung’s newer setup route is:
- On the new Galaxy, open Settings > Accounts and backup > Transfer data for device setup.
- Choose Receive on this phone.
- On the old Galaxy, start Smart Switch and choose Send from this phone.
- Choose the source and select Wireless.
- Choose the data to transfer, making sure the Home layout is selected if it is offered, and start the transfer.
Menu names and routes can vary by software version. If those exact labels are not present, follow the Smart Switch setup choices shown on your phones. The important decisions are to identify the new phone as the receiver, the old phone as the sender, choose the available connection method, and review the categories before starting.
Samsung’s transfer guidance notes that some items depend on the device manufacturer and operating-system version. Therefore, a Smart Switch connection is not a guarantee that every element will be identical on the destination. The Home layout option itself is the relevant confirmation: if it appears in the selection screen, select it; if it does not, do not claim that the transfer will recreate the layout.
Wireless, USB, and computer choices
Wireless Smart Switch requires no purchased cable and is suitable when the phones can communicate directly. Samsung also supports a USB-cable transfer, which can be useful when that connection method is offered by the devices. A computer workflow is another option: Smart Switch can back up data to a PC or SD card and restore that backup to a phone. These paths are alternatives, not a promise that every category will be available in every combination.

Confirm that it says Home layout or otherwise identifies the Home screen content you expect. The list can be affected by the source phone, destination phone, Android or One UI version, and manufacturer-specific restrictions. If a category is not shown, preserve the information another way or plan to recreate that portion manually.
One UI 7: check the home screen grid after a transfer
Samsung’s One UI 7 guidance says: “In One UI 7, only 4×6 and 5×6 Home screen grids are supported.” If Smart Switch updates or restores a device whose previous grid used a different setting, the grid may change and leave empty spaces. This warning is specific to One UI 7; it should not be assumed to describe every Galaxy software version.
A grid describes the number of icon positions across and down on a Home screen page. When the receiving phone cannot use the old grid, icons may be placed into the supported arrangement while positions that no longer correspond to the old layout remain visually open. That does not necessarily mean the transfer failed. It means you should inspect the grid and adjust the arrangement after the transfer.

- Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen.
- Tap Settings > Home screen grid.
- Choose 4×6 or 5×6.
- Tap Done, then review the arrangement.
In One UI 7, app icons and widgets cannot be moved, added, deleted, or edited while the Home screen is in landscape mode. Switch to portrait mode before making those changes. If an icon appears misplaced or a widget needs resizing, rotate the phone upright first, then use the normal Home screen editing controls.

A restored layout is useful for recovering the arrangement, but the available content depends on the backup and receiving phone. Samsung identifies the Cloud backup category as including layout and wallpapers except default wallpapers; it does not promise that every wallpaper or every item from every device will transfer. Default wallpapers are specifically excluded from the Cloud category described by Samsung.
Smart Switch’s Home layout support is for Galaxy devices, with some transferable items dependent on manufacturer and operating-system version. A transfer from a non-Galaxy source, or a transfer involving a substantially different software configuration, may therefore show a different list or produce a different result. The safest expectation is that supported layout information will be carried over where Samsung offers the category, while unsupported or unavailable pieces may require setup again.
- Check the backup or transfer selection screen to see whether Home screen or Home layout is included.
- After the transfer, inspect the screens, folders, shortcuts, widgets, and wallpaper rather than assuming the previous setup is fully intact.
- If the destination uses One UI 7 and the old layout used another grid, select a supported grid and review any resulting gaps.
- If something is missing, use the Home screen controls to recreate it; manual rebuilding cannot guarantee the exact former arrangement.
The Home screen category should not be confused with the contents inside individual apps. Samsung’s documented Cloud item is the layout and eligible wallpaper category, while Smart Switch’s relevant item is Home layout. Anything not offered in those lists should be treated as outside the documented layout restore.
Rebuild missing screens or items manually
If a restore is incomplete, Samsung’s Home screen controls can be used to add screens, set the main screen, reorder screens, add app shortcuts, create folders, and add widgets. The available screens and settings vary by wireless provider, software version, and model, so the exact controls may not match across Galaxy phones.

Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen to open the editing view. From there, use the controls presented by the phone to add a page, move pages into the desired order, or designate the main page. To replace a missing app shortcut, open the app list and use the phone’s normal option for adding that app to Home. To organize shortcuts, place them together and create a folder using the controls offered by the device. Widgets can likewise be added from the Home screen editing view when the relevant widget is available.
Use the phone’s Home screen editing controls to restore only the pieces that are missing. For example, add a screen if there is no longer room for the desired shortcuts, move screens into the desired order, and recreate folders or widgets that did not return. In One UI 7, make these edits in portrait orientation. These steps rebuild the visible arrangement; they do not recover data that was never part of the backup or transfer.

A practical verification checklist
- Count the Home screen pages and confirm that the intended main page is present.
- Open each folder and check that its shortcuts are present.
- Check widgets individually; a page can look correct while a widget is absent.
- Review the wallpaper and remember that default wallpapers are excluded from Samsung’s listed Cloud category.
- Check the grid, especially after a One UI 7 transfer.
- Rotate to portrait mode before editing on One UI 7.
This review is worthwhile because an arrangement can appear mostly restored while still missing a page, a folder member, or a widget. It also gives you a clear list of items to rebuild instead of repeatedly rerunning a transfer without checking what the destination actually received.
Before you reset or switch phones
- Open the Samsung Cloud backup list and verify that Home screen is available.
- Run Back up now and wait for the process to finish if using Cloud.
- For Smart Switch, check the selected data before transferring and confirm that the Home layout is offered.
- If moving to a new Galaxy, keep in mind that software and device differences may change which items transfer.
- Record whether the destination will use One UI 7, because its supported grids are limited to 4×6 and 5×6.
- After restore, check the grid and arrangement, especially if the receiving phone uses One UI 7.
Do not factory-reset the old phone until you have confirmed that the chosen backup or transfer path completed and that the new or reset phone shows the expected Home layout. Samsung’s documentation does not promise identical results across every model, operating-system version, country, or carrier, so the selection screens and the post-transfer review are essential parts of the process.

Why are there empty spaces after moving to a Galaxy with One UI 7?
One UI 7 supports only 4×6 and 5×6 Home screen grids. If the old phone used another grid, Smart Switch may change the grid and leave gaps. Touch and hold an empty Home area, open Settings > Home screen grid, choose 4×6 or 5×6, and tap Done.
Can I edit the Home screen in landscape mode on One UI 7?
Samsung says app icons and widgets cannot be moved, added, deleted, or edited while the Home screen is in landscape mode. Rotate to portrait before making those changes.
What if only part of my layout returns?
