Android does not offer one universal, guaranteed clone of every home-screen page. The safest approach is layered: run Google’s device backup, use the new phone’s built-in transfer during setup when the old phone is available, use Samsung Smart Switch for supported Galaxy transfers, and export a backup from your launcher if it provides one. Even then, check folders, shortcuts, widgets and page order manually after restoration.
Google says its backup can include apps, app data and device settings, but it also warns: "Not all apps can back up or restore all settings and data." A launcher’s workspace is therefore different from the Google Account app list or general system settings. The instructions below show which route fits your situation and how to verify the result before wiping the old phone.
What an Android home-screen backup actually includes
Your home screen is a workspace made from several types of item. Google’s help page, Add apps, shortcuts & widgets to your Home screens, treats these as separate elements:

- Shortcuts created by apps, browsers or system features.
- Widgets supplied by apps.
- Folders containing groups of icons.
- Page order, wallpaper and launcher-specific choices.
Google’s standard Android backup documents apps and app data and device settings as backup categories. It does not promise that every launcher, widget provider or app will serialize every workspace detail. A restored app can therefore be present without its shortcut, a widget can require a fresh placement, or a folder can need to be rebuilt. Some home-screen management instructions on Google’s page apply only to Android 14 and later, so labels and available controls can differ on older versions.

Think of the process as restoring several layers rather than recovering one file:
- Account backup: Google stores the categories supported by your device and apps.
- Transfer: a setup wizard copies data directly from the old phone or from a selected cloud backup.
- Launcher workspace: the launcher may have its own export format and compatibility rules.
- Manual verification: you confirm that the visual arrangement and interactive items behave as expected.
Choose the route that matches your phones

Before choosing, note four facts: whether the old phone still works, whether both phones use the same manufacturer, whether you are restoring from cloud or transferring directly, and which launcher is currently active. Also compare Android versions before starting; the supported direction matters.
Prepare the old phone before a reset or move
1. Identify the active launcher
Open the phone’s default-app settings and look for the Home app or Home application entry. The wording varies by manufacturer and Android version. Record the launcher name and version, especially if it is not the manufacturer’s default. A launcher backup is useful only when the new phone can run a compatible version of that launcher.

2. Make a quick visual inventory
Take screenshots of every home-screen page, including open folders. Record any widgets that show accounts, calendars, tasks or smart-home controls. Screenshots do not restore anything, but they provide an exact reference when you need to place an item manually. Write down which page is the default page and which shortcuts are important for work or two-factor authentication.
3. Check account, storage and connectivity
Confirm that the phone is signed in to the Google Account you intend to use on the replacement. Keep the phone on power and a reliable Wi-Fi connection while a backup or transfer runs. If the launcher exports a file, save a second copy outside the old phone, such as cloud storage or a computer, before beginning a reset.

4. Check Android and launcher versions
In Settings > About phone, note the Android version on both devices. Google states: "You can’t restore a backup from a higher Android version onto a phone running a lower Android version." A same-version or newer-version destination is the supported direction for a complete transfer. Also check whether your launcher documents a version-family rule; Nova, for example, advises using backups within the same major version family.
Back up with Google’s Android device backup
Google’s current instructions are collected under Back up or restore data on your Android device. Menu names differ, so use the closest matching path shown by your phone.
- Open backup settings. Try Settings > Google > Backup. On some phones the entry is under Settings > System > Backup or a manufacturer’s account-and-backup section.
- Review Backup details. Check the Google Account, the categories listed and the time of the latest successful backup. Read any warning about items that cannot be included.
- Run Back up now. Start the manual backup if the button is available, then leave the phone connected until the timestamp updates. A recent timestamp is more useful than assuming that automatic backup has just run.
- Keep the old phone intact. Do not factory-reset it until the replacement has completed setup and you have checked the home screen. The cloud copy is a fallback, not proof that every layout element has been captured.
Google One’s Back up your device guidance explains that restoration is tied to the setup experience. Some app and settings data may be restorable only while the phone is being set up, and Google says the process can take up to 24 hours. If the replacement is already configured and the desired restore option is missing, Google One notes that some restore paths may require a factory reset. Back up anything newly created on that replacement before resetting it.
Restore during setup or copy directly from the old phone
Cloud restore from a Google backup
- Turn on the replacement phone and begin its setup.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and sign in with the same Google Account used for the backup.
- When setup offers a restore or copy option, select the relevant backup by device name and date.
- Choose the offered apps and data to restore, then keep the phone connected while installation continues.
- After setup reaches the home screen, wait for pending apps to install before judging the arrangement.
Google’s Copy apps & data from an Android to a new Android device instructions cover the setup transfer and restore choices. The exact screens depend on the manufacturer, Android version and whether you select a cable, a wireless connection or a cloud backup.
Direct Android-to-Android transfer
Use direct transfer when the old phone is available and both devices are close by. Start the new phone’s setup, choose the option to copy apps and data, unlock the old phone when prompted, and follow the pairing instructions. Keep both phones powered and nearby until the wizard reports completion. Direct transfer can carry more device-specific information than a generic cloud restore, but Google does not define one identical content set for every manufacturer and method. Treat any home-layout entry shown in the wizard as a supported option for that particular combination, not a universal Android guarantee.

Move a Galaxy home layout with Samsung Smart Switch
Samsung documents Smart Switch at How to transfer and backup data using Smart Switch on a Galaxy phone. Samsung lists Home layout among the content that can be transferred for Galaxy devices. This is a manufacturer-specific capability, so check the supported content list for the exact source and destination models before relying on it.

- Install or open Smart Switch on the Galaxy phones if it is not already present.
- On the new phone, choose to receive data; on the old phone, choose to send data.
- Select a wireless connection or connect the phones with the supported cable.
- Review the categories Smart Switch offers, including Home layout when it is available.
- Start the transfer and leave both phones connected until it completes.
Computer-assisted method
Samsung also describes a computer method for backing up and restoring Galaxy content. Use it when a direct phone transfer is impractical, and verify that the backup includes the categories you need. A Smart Switch backup is not evidence that a non-Galaxy launcher or every third-party widget will behave identically on the destination.
Use a launcher’s own backup for custom setups
If you changed the grid, gestures, icon packs, folders or page arrangement in a third-party launcher, open that launcher’s settings and look for Backup, Export or Save and restore. The launcher’s own format is often the most direct way to preserve its workspace, but it is not interchangeable with Google’s device backup.
Nova as an example
Nova’s official site, Nova Launcher, describes its feature as: "Easily save and reload any and all of your custom setups." Its FAQ recommends restoring a backup within the same major version family, such as Nova 7 with Nova 7 and Nova 8 with Nova 8. Check the installed version on both phones before importing.
Export and import safely
- Open the launcher’s settings on the old phone and create a backup or export file.
- Choose a location outside the launcher’s private storage if the app offers that choice.
- Copy the file to cloud storage, a computer or another location you can open from the new phone.
- Install the same launcher on the new phone and set it as the default Home app.
- Open its backup screen, select the copied file and confirm the import.
- Reinstall any missing apps before judging folders or widgets; a launcher can place an icon only when the target app exists.
Do not assume that a launcher export contains widget data, account sessions or app-specific configuration. Those items are controlled by the widget provider or the app and may require separate sign-in or setup.

Check the restored home screen systematically
Allow the phone to finish app installation and background synchronization before doing a final inspection. Then compare the new phone with the screenshots and inventory you made earlier.
- Pages: swipe through every page and confirm the default page and order.
- Folders: open each folder, check its name and verify that the expected icons are inside.
- Shortcuts: tap important shortcuts, including browser, contact and settings shortcuts, to confirm they open the intended destination.
- Widgets: check size, position, account selection and live data. Remove and add a widget again if its provider requires fresh authorization.
- Apps: look for missing or disabled apps and install them from the same account where appropriate.
- Launcher: confirm the intended Home app is still the default; a manufacturer launcher may have taken over after setup.
- Work profiles: verify that work-profile apps and their shortcuts are available under the organization’s management rules.
Keep the old phone untouched until this checklist passes. If a layout item is absent, a screenshot gives you a reliable manual reconstruction plan even when no automated route supports it.

The restore option did not appear
Some app and settings data is offered only during setup. If the phone is already configured, check Google’s restore guidance and determine whether a factory reset is required for that restore path. Save any new photos, messages or files first, then repeat setup only if the missing data justifies it.
The destination runs an older Android version
A backup from a higher Android version cannot be restored onto a lower-version phone. Update the destination where the manufacturer supports an update, or use the older phone’s compatible transfer options instead. Do not downgrade the source merely to force a restore.
Apps returned but folders or pages did not
This usually means the app list was restored without the launcher workspace, or the destination selected a different launcher. Set the intended launcher as the default, import its own backup if available, and use your screenshots to recreate any unsupported folders or page order.

Widgets are missing or blank
Widgets are separate home-screen elements and depend on their provider. Confirm that the app is installed, sign in again if required, then add the widget from the new phone’s widget picker. A launcher backup may remember a position without being able to recreate the provider’s data.
A launcher backup will not import
Check that the launcher is installed, that the backup file is readable on the new phone and that the launcher versions meet the vendor’s compatibility guidance. For Nova, keep the backup and destination within the same major version family. If import still fails, use the visual inventory to rebuild the workspace rather than repeatedly resetting the phone.
Galaxy transfer did not include the expected layout
Open Smart Switch again and review the categories supported for the two specific Galaxy models and the method you used. A home-layout option documented for Galaxy devices does not imply identical support for a cross-brand move or for a third-party launcher.
Cross-brand, cross-launcher and managed-device limits
Exact restoration is least predictable when the manufacturer, launcher or Android version changes at the same time. A Samsung layout may use a grid or widget behavior unavailable in another manufacturer’s launcher. A third-party launcher may be installed on the new phone but lack the same icon pack, widget provider or permission state. Work-profile and enterprise-managed apps can also be governed by policies that a consumer backup cannot override.
For a cross-brand move, use the new phone’s setup transfer first, then install the old launcher if it supports the destination and import its export file. If the old launcher is not compatible, choose the destination launcher deliberately and rebuild from your screenshots. This two-stage plan preserves app data where supported without assuming that visual placement will survive a change of workspace software.
What the Android platform documentation means for ordinary users
The Android Open Source Project describes XML import and export through LauncherProvider. That documentation is for launcher and system implementers, not a normal end-user backup command. Do not search for an XML file or edit launcher databases as a routine recovery method; use the consumer backup, transfer wizard or launcher export exposed by your phone.
A practical decision sequence
- Old phone unavailable: rely on Google device backup, then restore during setup and manually rebuild anything absent.
- Old phone available, any Android brand: start with the new phone’s setup transfer, then check the launcher’s own backup.
- Galaxy to Galaxy: compare Smart Switch’s supported content for both models and include Home layout when offered.
- Highly customized third-party launcher: export from that launcher before transferring, and keep the file outside the old phone.
- Different Android versions: ensure the destination is the same version or newer before selecting a complete restore.
- After every route: wait for apps to finish returning, inspect pages, folders, shortcuts and widgets, and only then erase the old phone.
The reliable goal is not a promise of an identical clone on every Android device. It is a recoverable workflow: a current Google backup, the most specific transfer available for your phones, a launcher export when applicable, and a deliberate post-restore check of every home-screen element that matters.
