Keep the original Proxmox VE hosts and an independent backup repository available until the replacement hypervisor has passed boot, filesystem, network, service and application tests. The safest migration is to make a final application-consistent backup, verify that the restore point can be read, test representative restores, and cut over with a documented rollback window.
You have two practical recovery routes: restore the VM directly when your backup platform supports the destination, or export/convert each virtual disk and import it into a newly defined VM. In both cases, record firmware mode, CPU model, disk controller, NIC model and MAC address, boot order, IP settings, attached ISO files and passthrough devices before shutting down Proxmox.
What changes when you leave Proxmox VE
A Proxmox backup is a recovery source, not automatically a portable VM package for every hypervisor. The destination must understand the backup format, or you must convert the virtual disks and rebuild the VM definition. A job that reports success only proves that data was written to the repository; it does not prove that a VM will boot with the destination’s firmware, storage controller, drivers or network model.

Plan the work as two separate activities:
- Data protection: preserve at least one complete, readable restore point outside the Proxmox host and retain the encryption keys needed to use it.
- Hardware abstraction: recreate the VM’s virtual hardware on the new hypervisor and make the guest operating system accept its new storage and network devices.
Do not power off or delete the source VM until the replacement has passed application-level checks and the agreed rollback period has expired.

Choose a migration path before the maintenance window
The right path depends on the destination, the backup product and the amount of guest reconfiguration you can accept. The following options are documented in the supplied product guidance.
| Path | Destinations and formats | What it provides | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct restore or Instant Recovery | VMware, Microsoft Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV and Proxmox VE | Starts or restores a VM from a backup without first converting every disk manually. | Support depends on the backup product, its version and the migration direction. The destination VM still needs deliberate CPU, firmware, controller and NIC mapping. |
| Disk export and import | VMDK, VHD or VHDX files; the documented workflow uses them with VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V. | Moves the guest’s virtual disks while you create a fresh destination VM definition. | You must set firmware, boot order, controller, drivers, network identity and other VM settings yourself. |
| Proxmox Backup Server staging | Proxmox VE nodes using a PBS datastore | Central backup, restore and live-restore workflows for staging, validation and rollback within the Proxmox ecosystem. | It does not by itself make a Proxmox backup a native VM on another hypervisor. |
| Snapshots or ZFS replication | Proxmox environments that retain compatible storage and hosts | Fast local rollback or a secondary copy of VM state. | ZFS replication is asynchronous. A failure can leave a recovery gap between the last successful replication and the outage, so replication is not a substitute for an independently retained backup. |
When direct restore is preferable
Use direct restore when the backup platform explicitly supports your destination and you want to reduce disk-conversion work. Veeam’s Proxmox documentation describes backup and restore of Proxmox VE VMs, and its Instant Recovery documentation lists VMware, Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV and Proxmox VE as restore targets. Confirm the exact product release and supported direction in your installation before scheduling the cutover.
When disk export is the safer fallback
Export disks when the destination is not a supported direct-restore target, when you need a clean destination VM definition, or when you want a format that the destination already imports. The documented export workflow produces VMDK, VHD or VHDX files. Treat the export as a disk move, not a complete VM move: configuration such as BIOS/UEFI mode, virtual hardware, MAC address and boot order must be recreated.

Record virtual hardware
- VM identifier, hostname, operating-system edition and current power state.
- Firmware mode: legacy BIOS or UEFI. Record whether the VM uses a secure-boot configuration.
- Virtual CPU count, CPU model or feature flags, memory size and any NUMA or CPU-pinning choices.
- Every disk, its capacity, bus/controller type, cache mode, boot order and storage location.
- NIC model, MAC address, VLAN or bridge attachment, link state and any additional virtual interfaces.
- Attached ISO files, cloud-init data, serial consoles, virtual TPMs and passthrough hardware.
- Snapshots, linked clones and scheduled jobs that could affect the final backup.
Map application and infrastructure dependencies
Classify VMs rather than migrating them in arbitrary order. Mark clustered databases, domain controllers, certificate authorities, license-bound software, shared-storage clients, monitoring agents and systems that depend on external DNS, identity, time or message services. Note startup order and any application-specific quiesce or recovery procedure.

Passthrough devices deserve special attention. A VM that uses a physical GPU, HBA, USB device or other host-bound hardware may not be portable to a different host or hypervisor without a replacement device and a new driver plan. Shared storage and external services can also make an apparently successful boot unusable until mounts, credentials and service endpoints are updated.
Build an independent, usable restore repository
Choose storage that is not dependent on the Proxmox host you are replacing. Keep at least one full restore point outside that host, with enough capacity for the retained versions and temporary exports. Independence matters during a host failure, a storage corruption event or a mistake made during migration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDocument repository controls
- Repository location, storage path, access account and network route.
- Backup job name, schedule, retention policy and the exact final-run identifier.
- Encryption status, key location, key owners and a tested method for retrieving the keys.
- Immutability or write-protection settings, where available, and who can change them.
- Free capacity for a full restore, exported disks and temporary destination VMs.
- Which administrator can authorize a restore and which person owns the rollback decision.
Do not treat a second copy on the same storage system as independent if a single controller, pool or credential failure can remove both copies. A repository that cannot be mounted, authenticated or decrypted during an outage is not a practical recovery point.
Make and verify the final application-consistent backup
- Announce a maintenance window and freeze changes that would make the source and destination diverge.
- Quiesce applications using their normal procedures. For a database, use its supported backup or flush method rather than relying only on a crash-consistent snapshot.
- Run the final backup job and record its repository, job identifier, encryption settings and retention outcome.
- Confirm that the job completed for every required disk and that the repository reports the restore point as readable.
- Preserve the encryption keys and the backup-server configuration needed to browse or restore the point.
- Keep the source VM powered on until the planned shutdown, unless the application runbook requires an earlier freeze.
A completion message is not a boot test. Restore at least one representative Linux VM, one Windows VM and the most critical application before the production cutover. Choose examples that exercise different firmware modes, disk controllers and network requirements rather than three nearly identical guests.
Run a representative test restore
- Use an isolated network. Attach the test VM to a lab VLAN or disconnect its virtual NIC so it cannot claim the production IP address or contact production services unexpectedly.
- Create the destination definition. Select the intended firmware, CPU presentation, memory, disk controller and NIC model before attaching restored disks.
- Restore the disks. Use the direct-restore workflow or import the exported files. Preserve the source disk order and mark the correct boot disk.
- Boot and inspect the console. Check for firmware errors, missing boot loaders, inaccessible filesystems, recovery-mode prompts and driver failures.
- Install destination guest tools and drivers. Add the hypervisor’s storage and network drivers, then remove or disable obsolete virtual-device services only after confirming that the guest no longer needs them.
- Validate the operating system. Check hostname, time zone, clock synchronization, filesystem mounts, event logs, service status and firewall profile.
- Validate network behavior. Confirm the intended MAC address, IP address, subnet, gateway, DNS servers, routes and VLAN. Test name resolution in both directions where appropriate.
- Exercise the application. Log in, run a representative transaction, verify dependent services and check monitoring, backups and alerting from the destination.
- Record measured results. Capture restore duration, boot time, service recovery time, manual fixes and any data or configuration differences. Use these observations to set the production cutover and rollback thresholds.
If the test fails, fix the destination definition or guest configuration and repeat it. Do not interpret a successful operating-system boot as proof that a clustered database, domain service or licensed application is healthy.

Direct restore to a supported hypervisor
Define the destination VM deliberately
Before starting the restore, create a destination VM with a documented match for memory, vCPU count, firmware and disk order. A different virtual CPU model can expose or hide instruction sets; use the destination’s compatibility mode when the guest or application requires a stable CPU feature set. Select the controller and NIC model for which the guest has drivers, or plan the driver installation before the first production boot.
Use the backup platform’s supported restore workflow
For a product that supports Proxmox VE backups and Instant Recovery, select the restore point, destination host or cluster, datastore and network mapping in that product’s console. Veeam documents restoration of Proxmox VE VM backups and Instant Recovery to VMware, Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV and Proxmox VE. It also documents restoring backups from VMware ESXi, Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV, HPE Morpheus VM Essentials, oVirt KVM, Scale Computing HyperCore, XCP-ng and Citrix XenServer to Proxmox VE. The exact choices and prerequisites vary by product release, so validate them in a lab before the maintenance window.
Check conversion side effects
A direct restore can change the guest’s perceived hardware even when the virtual disk contents are unchanged. Windows may create a new network adapter and retain the old adapter’s IP assignment; Linux may rename an interface when its MAC address changes. Storage-controller changes can also make an installed driver unavailable at boot. Have console access and a recovery ISO available before you switch the production address.
Export and import disks when direct restore is unavailable
Export the source disks
Use the backup platform’s disk-export function for the selected restore point. The documented Veeam workflow can export disks from Proxmox VE VM backups to VMDK, VHD or VHDX. Verify the exported file size, checksum or platform-readable inventory before deleting temporary copies. Export every disk required by the guest, including data disks that an application mounts after startup.
Create a matching destination VM
Build the destination VM with the source’s firmware mode, vCPU and memory settings, disk order, controller type and intended NIC. Attach the destination’s boot firmware and virtual disk controller before the first boot. If the guest was installed for UEFI, a BIOS-mode destination will not normally find the same boot entry; the reverse mismatch is equally disruptive.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Import the disks
On Proxmox VE, the documented command pattern for importing a VMDK is:
qm disk import {target VMID} {vmdk file} {target storage}
After importing, attach the resulting volume to the correct controller and set the boot order. Proxmox notes that additional steps may be needed to switch to VirtIO after migration. Do not change controller type and boot mode simultaneously unless you have console access and a tested recovery path; changing one variable at a time makes failures easier to diagnose.
Prepare guest drivers and network identity
Storage drivers
Install the destination’s paravirtualized or emulated storage driver while the source controller is still available when possible. Confirm that the driver is enabled at boot, then test a clone or isolated restore. If the guest stops at an inaccessible-boot-device error, revert to a controller model already supported by the operating system, install the correct driver offline or through recovery media, and retry.
Network drivers and addressing
Install the destination NIC driver and decide whether to preserve the source MAC address. Preserving it can simplify DHCP reservations and licensing, but duplicate addresses are dangerous if the source and destination are powered on together. If the MAC changes, update DHCP reservations, static configuration, firewall rules, monitoring and any license binding. Remove stale adapters only after recording their settings.

Time, DNS and security controls
Verify time synchronization before testing authentication, certificates or clustered services. Confirm DNS search domains, forward and reverse resolution, host firewalls, endpoint protection and monitoring agents. A VM can appear healthy at the console while failing application connections because its new network profile is classified as public or because a required route is missing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Execute the cutover and preserve rollback
- Notify application owners and stop writes using the approved application procedure.
- Run the final incremental or full backup required by your recovery plan, then verify its readability.
- Power off the source VM cleanly and record the shutdown time. Keep its disks and configuration untouched.
- Start the destination in an isolated or restricted network and complete driver, filesystem and service checks.
- Apply the production VLAN, IP settings, DNS records and load-balancer or firewall changes in the planned order.
- Run the application transaction test and obtain an explicit owner sign-off.
- Back up the newly migrated VM from the destination platform and confirm that the new backup is readable.
- Leave the original VM powered off but recoverable until the rollback deadline. Do not reuse its IP address or delete its disks during this period.
Define rollback triggers before cutover: failed application transactions, unrecoverable data inconsistency, unacceptable restore time, missing monitoring or a driver problem that cannot be corrected within the window. Rollback means reversing the network and service changes and starting the preserved source VM only after confirming that no writes occurred on both copies.
Use Proxmox Backup Server for staging and rollback
Proxmox documents adding a PBS datastore by defining storage of type pbs on the Proxmox VE node. Once the datastore is added, VMs and containers can use the normal backup and restore workflows. This is useful when some systems remain on Proxmox, when you need a neutral staging point before a later conversion, or when you want fast live restore for validation.
Proxmox’s migration guidance says that organizations planning to use Proxmox Backup Server can use backups and live restore of VMs instead of snapshots. That approach gives you a restorable copy and a way to test a VM without treating a snapshot as the only rollback mechanism. PBS does not remove the need to convert disks when the final destination is another hypervisor.
ZFS replication can shorten recovery time between compatible Proxmox systems, but it is asynchronous. If the last successful replication occurred before recent writes, those writes are absent from the replica. Keep an independently retained, restorable backup even when replication is enabled.
Troubleshoot the failures that appear most often
| Symptom | Likely cause | Recovery action |
|---|---|---|
| VM drops into firmware or says no boot device | Firmware mode, boot order or disk controller does not match the installed guest. | Match BIOS/UEFI, attach the correct boot disk, repair the boot loader from recovery media if required, and retest before changing other settings. |
| Operating system reports an inaccessible boot device | The destination controller driver is missing or disabled. | Use a supported temporary controller, install the destination storage driver, enable it at boot and then switch to the intended controller. |
| Network interface is present but has no production address | The guest created a new adapter after the MAC or NIC model changed. | Install the NIC driver, assign the intended IP and DNS settings, update DHCP or firewall rules and remove stale adapters only after documenting them. |
| Application starts but clients cannot connect | DNS, routes, firewall profile, time synchronization or dependent services changed. | Test name resolution, routes, clock status, firewall rules and each dependency from the isolated and production networks. |
| Restore point cannot be opened | Repository access, encryption keys, retention or corruption prevents a usable restore. | Restore access and keys, select another verified point, or use the independent copy. Do not begin the cutover until at least one complete point is readable. |
| Replica is missing recent data | Asynchronous replication completed before the latest writes. | Use the latest independent backup for recovery and measure the actual replication gap for future planning. |
Evaluate tools and procedures against the same criteria
Before selecting a backup product or migration design, score it against the operational questions that determine whether a cutover is survivable:
- Destination coverage: Does it restore from Proxmox to the exact hypervisor and version you will operate?
- Restore portability: Can it restore the complete VM, or only export disks that require a new definition?
- Application consistency: Can it quiesce the databases and services that matter, and can owners verify the result?
- Disk-format conversion: Does it produce the destination’s required VMDK, VHD or VHDX format without an intermediate host?
- Recovery-time objective: Can you meet the measured restore and boot time, including driver and network work?
- Repository isolation and immutability: Can an administrator or ransomware event on the source host delete the restore point?
- Encryption and key handling: Are keys recoverable by an authorized operator during an outage?
- Scale and automation: Can the same inventory, mapping and validation be repeated across dozens or hundreds of VMs?
- Guest-driver work: Does the process expose storage and NIC changes before production, with console-based recovery?
- Test-restore support: Can you start an isolated copy without touching production?
- Licensing and support: Are the required editions, connectors and vendor support available for the migration period and the steady state?
Use measured results from your representative restores rather than an assumed industry success rate. No authoritative percentage for cross-hypervisor migration success, downtime or failure rate establishes what your environment will achieve.

Completion criteria
Consider the migration complete only when the destination VM has passed its operating-system and application tests, a new backup from the destination is readable, monitoring and scheduled protection are active, and the original VM and independent restore point remain available through the agreed rollback period. This sequence turns a hypervisor change into a controlled recovery exercise instead of an irreversible disk conversion.
