Make a clean copy of Grand Theft Auto V before installing anything. The most reliable fallback is a complete copy of the unmodded game directory stored somewhere separate, plus independent copies of your saves, settings, recordings, downloaded mod archives and installation notes. If a mod later breaks the game, remove it using its own instructions, restore files from a backup made for the same game version, or use your launcher’s file-verification tool when no suitable backup exists.

This workflow applies to PC installations from Steam, the Epic Games Launcher and the Rockstar Games Launcher. The menus and installation paths differ, so use the location shown by your own launcher rather than assuming one default folder.

What a safe GTA V backup contains

A backup is more useful when it matches the problem you may need to solve. Treat your preparation as several layers rather than one copy of one folder.

1. A clean installation copy

Copy the entire GTA V installation directory while the game is unmodded. This preserves the original executables, archives, libraries and loose files that a mod might replace. A complete folder copy is the broadest local fallback because it does not depend on a launcher being able to identify every changed file.

  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

Store the copy outside the live installation directory and label it clearly, for example GTA V Clean - 2026-10-16 - build noted in launcher. If you know the game build, include it in the label or in a text file beside the backup. A separate internal drive or portable external SSD can reduce the risk that an accidental deletion in the live folder also removes the backup; the drive is optional, and its capacity should be chosen after checking the size of your own installation.

2. User data outside the installation folder

Game saves and profile information may not be inside the folder you copy. Community documentation from GTAPoliceMods identifies profile data under DocumentsRockstar GamesGTA VProfiles.... Rockstar’s clean-install directions also distinguish user-data locations from the installation directory and identify saves, settings and recorded videos as items to preserve. Copy the relevant user-data folders separately if losing progress, graphics settings or recordings would matter.

3. Your mod set and instructions

Keep the original downloaded mod archives, readme files, version notes and a simple list of what you installed. Record whether a mod added a plugin, replaced a loose file, edited an archive or changed a launcher setting. This record makes selective removal possible and lets you rebuild the same working setup after a clean restore.

Before you copy anything

  1. Return to an unmodded state. If this is your first mod, begin from a verified, working installation. If mods are already present, remove them according to their documentation before creating a “clean” backup; copying a modified folder and labeling it clean defeats the purpose.
  2. Close GTA V and its launcher. Exit the game, wait for it to close, then quit Steam, the Epic Games Launcher or the Rockstar Games Launcher. Files that are still in use may fail to copy or leave you with an incomplete snapshot.
  3. Note the current version. Write down the date and the game build shown by your launcher or game. A backup made before a later update may contain archives that do not match the newer installation.
  4. Check free space. A full copy needs roughly the space occupied by the live installation, in addition to room for your future modded files and saves.

Find the actual GTA V installation directory

Do not rely on a universal default path. The same game can be installed on different drives, in a custom library, or through a different launcher.

Steam

Open your Steam Library, right-click GTA V, choose Manage and select Browse local files. File Explorer opens the directory Steam is using for the installation. You can also open the game’s properties and inspect the installed-files area before browsing.

Epic Games Launcher

Open Library, select the three-dot menu for GTA V and choose Manage. The installation location shown there is the path to copy. If the folder was moved, use the path displayed by the launcher rather than an older shortcut.

Rockstar Games Launcher

Open the launcher’s Settings, select GTA V under installed games and inspect the installation location. The same settings area is also where Rockstar exposes its integrity-check command, described below.

Make the clean folder backup

  1. Create a destination folder on another location with enough free space. Do not place the backup as a subfolder of the live GTA V directory.
  2. Copy the complete game directory, including its subfolders and files, to that destination. Use normal copy-and-paste or your operating system’s folder-copy utility; do not move the original.
  3. Wait for the copy to finish and check that the destination contains the same major folders and files as the source. A copy that stops because of a full drive or a permissions error is not a usable backup.
  4. Add a small text file beside the copy with the backup date, launcher, installation path and game version you recorded.
  5. Keep the clean copy unchanged. Install and test mods only in the live game directory or in the mod-management workflow recommended by the mod author.

Steam’s support documentation allows completed backup files to be moved to another location, so the destination does not have to remain on the same drive. Its dedicated backup feature has a narrower compatibility condition: Steam says it supports games completely downloaded, installed and patched through Steam. Do not assume that this feature produces an equivalent backup for every GTA V edition or launcher.

Back up saves, settings and recordings separately

A game-directory copy is not a complete profile backup. Before changing files, preserve the user-data locations identified by Rockstar’s clean-install guidance and the profile path documented by GTAPoliceMods, including DocumentsRockstar GamesGTA VProfiles... when it exists on your system.

  • Copy the profiles and save-related folders to a separate dated folder.
  • Preserve configuration files if you want to retain graphics, controller and display settings.
  • Copy recorded videos or clips that you want to keep.
  • Do not overwrite a newer save with an older copy during restoration; compare dates and keep more than one dated backup when possible.

Epic states that its Verify action does not affect saved data. That is useful for repair, but verification is not a substitute for independently copying saves, settings and recordings.

Use OpenIV’s mods folder for supported archive edits

When a mod’s instructions call for editing a supported GTA V archive, OpenIV documents a separate mods folder workflow. The game’s original archives remain in the original installation location while edited copies are placed under mods. This separation makes it easier to remove archive edits without replacing the originals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OpenIV also says its ASI Manager can switch between the modded setup and the original game. Follow the exact instructions for the mod and for your OpenIV installation; folder names and required components must match the mod’s documentation.

This is not a universal uninstall method. Script plugins, loaders, added DLL files and mods that place loose files directly in the game directory may not be controlled by the mods folder. Keep a list of every file added or replaced, and never delete the entire mods folder on the assumption that it contains every mod component.

Restore a working installation after a mod breaks it

Use the least destructive method that matches the failure. Keep the damaged folder until you know the restored installation works; it may contain logs or files you still need to identify the offending mod.

Step 1: Disable or remove the mod correctly

Read the mod’s uninstall instructions and reverse its documented changes. Remove or disable plugins through the method specified by the author, and keep the downloaded archive somewhere outside the game folder in case you need to reinstall it later. If the game starts after this step, test Story Mode before making any additional changes.

Step 2: Restore affected files from a matching clean backup

If you know which original files were replaced and you have a clean copy from the same game version, restore only those files. This preserves unrelated updates and other files you intentionally changed. Close the game and launcher first, then copy the clean versions over the affected files.

When many files were changed, or you cannot identify all of them, rename the current installation and copy the complete clean directory into the launcher’s expected location. Keep the old directory until the replacement launches successfully. A backup from an older build may not be safe to mix with a newer installation: GTAPoliceMods specifically warns against restoring old archives after the game has updated.

Step 3: Verify the installation when no suitable backup exists

Verification repairs supported game files using the launcher’s current records. It is a repair operation, not a backup of your mod files, and it does not restore a previous mod configuration.

Launcher Current menu path What to expect
Rockstar Games Launcher Settings → select GTA V under installed games → Verify Integrity Rockstar says the check verifies integrity and helps ensure the game and supporting files are up to date.
Steam Library → right-click GTA V → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files Steam says the scan can take several minutes. A local configuration file may fail verification without needing replacement.
Epic Games Launcher Library → GTA V three-dot menu → Manage → Verify Epic says differing or damaged files are repaired and saved data is not affected.

Do not interrupt a verification scan. After it completes, launch Story Mode and check that the game reaches a playable session before reinstalling any mod.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 4: Escalate to a clean reinstall only when necessary

If restoring a matching backup and verifying files do not produce a working installation, follow the launcher’s reinstall process or Rockstar’s documented clean-install procedure. Before deleting residual folders, copy out saves, profiles, settings, recordings, mod archives and your installation notes. A clean reinstall can remove leftovers that verification does not address, but it also makes an unpreserved user-data folder harder to recover.

Why game-version matching matters

GTA V updates can change the contents and compatibility of archives. A clean backup is a snapshot of one build, not a timeless replacement for every future build. Record the version and date for each backup, and avoid copying an old archive into a newer installation merely because the filename looks familiar.

If the game updated after you made the backup, first determine whether the mod failure is caused by the update. A current verification pass is generally safer than mixing selected files from different builds. If you must use the older clean copy, restore the complete matching set rather than combining random files from old and new folders, then let the launcher update or verify that installation as appropriate.

Confirm the game is clean before reinstalling mods

  1. Start the launcher and let it finish any pending update or verification.
  2. Launch GTA V into Story Mode, load a save and test basic controls, audio and graphics.
  3. Exit the game and confirm that no old plugin, loader or loose mod file remains in the live folder unless it is part of the next mod’s documented prerequisites.
  4. Install one mod or one small, related group at a time.
  5. Start the game after each change and record exactly what was added.

Keep modded single-player files separate from GTA Online. The cited guidance does not establish a current, comprehensive Online policy, so check Rockstar’s current rules before using any modified files with an online service. Do not infer that a successful Story Mode launch means a modified setup is appropriate for Online.

Troubleshooting common backup and restore failures

The backup copy is smaller or missing files

Check the destination drive’s free space, permissions and copy-error messages. Re-copy the entire source directory after closing the launcher. Do not use a partially completed folder as your clean baseline.

The launcher cannot find the restored folder

Use the launcher’s installed-game settings to confirm the expected path. If you renamed the original directory, restore the clean copy to the exact location the launcher lists, then run Verify so the launcher can reconcile its records.

Verification reports a file mismatch repeatedly

Steam notes that some local configuration files can fail verification without requiring replacement. If the game still launches and the reported item is a local configuration file, do not delete it automatically. For other recurring mismatches, close all launchers, remove only the documented mod files, run verification again and check whether a security tool or permissions issue is preventing replacement.

The game still crashes after verification

Verification may repair supported files while leaving third-party plugins, loaders, settings or incompatible residual files in place. Remove those components using their documented uninstall steps, preserve user data, and then follow Rockstar’s clean-install directions if the installation remains unusable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The restored game lost progress or settings

Look in the separately backed-up profile and user-data locations rather than in the installation folder. Restore the appropriate dated save or settings files only after closing the game, and keep the newer files in a separate safety folder before replacing anything.

A maintenance routine that prevents future re-downloads

  • Keep one untouched clean copy and never install mods into it.
  • Create a new dated clean copy after a major game update instead of relying only on an older snapshot.
  • Maintain separate folders for clean files, active mods, downloaded archives and user data.
  • Write down every file a mod replaces, adds or edits.
  • Test Story Mode after each significant change.
  • Periodically open the clean copy or verify its contents so you discover a failed backup before an emergency.
  • Keep at least one copy in a different location from the live installation; moving a completed backup to another drive is supported by Steam’s backup guidance.

Backup versus verification: choose the right recovery tool

Situation Best first action Reason
You want a fallback before installing a mod Copy the complete clean installation and user data separately You control the snapshot and can preserve files outside the launcher’s repair scope.
A mod replaced a few known files Restore those files from a same-version clean copy Selective restoration avoids changing unrelated current files.
You cannot identify all changed files Restore the complete same-version clean folder A full matching set avoids mixing incompatible or unknown files.
No usable backup exists Run the launcher’s Verify command The launcher can repair supported installation files without requiring a full download in many cases.
Verification and removal do not fix the game Preserve user data, then perform the documented clean reinstall Residual files or damaged installation metadata may remain outside the normal verification result.
