To move Google Messages to a new Android phone, back up the old phone in Android Settings and restore that backup during the new phone’s setup, or use the setup prompts to copy data directly from the old phone over cable or Wi-Fi. Installing Google Messages or signing into the app alone does not restore message history. Keep the old phone until you have checked your conversations on the new one.
Choose a transfer method

Google lists SMS and MMS in Android device backup and separately lists RCS messages when you use Google Messages. This describes Google’s stated backup coverage, not a guarantee that every message or app will behave identically on every phone. Some backup and transfer features require Android 9 or later. Back up messages on the old phone
- Charge and unlock the old phone. Make sure you can sign in to the Google Account you want to use for the backup.
- Open Settings, then find Google or Google services and open Backup. Exact labels vary by Android version and manufacturer.
- Turn on backup if it is off. Open the backup details and check that messages are included.
- Tap Back up now and wait for the backup to finish before switching phones. Google recommends using a PIN, pattern, or password as the screen lock to help protect backed-up data. Google’s backup instructions describe these settings.
Restore from a Google Account backup
- Start setting up the new Android phone and connect it to Wi-Fi.
- Sign in with the same Google Account used for the old phone’s backup.
- When prompted, choose the relevant backup and the data to restore, then follow the on-screen steps.
- Leave the phone connected while restoration completes. Google says the process can take up to 24 hours, so messages may not all appear immediately. Google’s restore guidance gives this estimate.
Google’s main restore flow is during first-time setup or after a factory reset. Google also says previously backed-up data may be added when you add the account to a phone that is already set up, but that is not the same as the usual full setup restore. Android’s setup guidance describes restoring or copying data during setup.

Copy directly from the old phone
- Begin setup on the new phone and choose the option to copy apps and data from another Android device.
- Pair the phones as directed and choose the data to copy.
- Use a cable or Wi-Fi, depending on the options shown. For a wired transfer, check the ports on both phones and use a compatible cable if you do not already have one.
- Keep both phones connected and follow the setup prompts until the process finishes. Menu wording and available options vary by device. Google’s Android setup instructions explain the copy process; Google Play services help also describes transfer by cable or Wi-Fi.
Check compatibility and special cases
Android version on the new phone
A backup from a newer Android version cannot be restored to a phone running an older version, and Google warns that a lower-version new phone can receive an incomplete transfer. Use the same or a later Android version on the new phone when possible, and install available system updates before transferring. Google’s backup guidance covers backup-version compatibility.

Work-managed phones
Backup may be unavailable when setting up a personal phone with a work profile, a work-only device, or a company-owned device. An organization can also restrict backup of work data. Check with your organization’s administrator if the backup option is missing or restricted. Google’s backup help and setup help describe these limitations.
RCS, SMS, MMS, and SIM changes
RCS is a messaging mode distinct from SMS and MMS. Google lists RCS backup when you use Google Messages, while RCS availability and features depend on your provider and settings. Google says end-to-end encryption applies to eligible RCS conversations, not SMS or MMS. Moving a SIM does not itself move message history. After SIM removal, RCS chats may continue working for about eight days; if messages stop arriving after you change messaging apps, review RCS settings and use Google Messages troubleshooting guidance. If messages are missing or the old phone is gone
- Wait for the restore to finish: Google says restoration can take up to 24 hours. Keep the phone connected and check again after setup has had time to complete. Google’s backup and restore guidance gives the estimate.
- Confirm the account and backup: Check that the new phone uses the same Google Account and that the old phone’s backup included messages.
- Check Android versions: A backup from a newer Android version cannot be restored to an older one. Update the destination phone where possible before trying again. Google’s compatibility guidance explains this restriction.
- Keep the old phone until you verify: Open Google Messages on the new phone and check that expected conversations are present before wiping, trading in, or giving away the old phone.
- If there was no backup and the old phone is unavailable: A Google Messages Community Manager says the messages are likely unretrievable in that situation; recovery is not guaranteed. Google Messages Community guidance addresses this case.
Google Messages Community guidance also says Google backup restoration restores a whole backup rather than offering a text-only restore selection. Direct transfer and manufacturer-specific options can vary. The community guidance describes the backup limitation.
